Am I a mean person because I considered locking this thread in a likely to fail attempt to encourage discussion on Tolkien?

Yes in a way. I've been in many guilds and I've noticed that the ones with no off topic threads die very quickly and become extremely boring.

Falathrim Am I a mean person because I considered locking this thread in a likely to fail attempt to encourage discussion on Tolkien? Yes. razz It's not an unreasonable desire. But you're right; it wouldn't work. Also, part of the reason I like this guild is just getting to shoot the breeze with reasonably intelligent people who share a few common interests with me. I mean, yeah, technically the guild is supposed to be a place to talk about Tolkien and his works, but if there's no social/community aspect outside of that, then it seems pretty hollow and meaningless.

We need at least one offtopic thread... even though we have that in the regular subforum. whee Maybe you can temporarily lock it, and see if we get some actual discussion about Tolkien going on. If not, unlock this. You wouldn't be seeing me for some time, until I reread some stuff though. Not that anyone would mind. xd
And yes Falathrim, you are very mean. twisted

I suppose it's reasonable to want to promote discussion on Tolkien, but what sort of a discussion would we have? Someone would post something, the answer would come in the first three posts, and the rest would be off-topic banter.

...do you not have any idea how much there is to debate in Tolkien's works?

Falathrim ...do you not have any idea how much there is to debate in Tolkien's works? We can have those debates AND the off topic thread. It's that simple. Without Eambar, this guild would be even more dead and everyone would just spend their time at the subforum.

Okay fine...
Why do you suppose Aule didn't bother making a vastly noticible difference between female and male Dwarves?

Zach McClure Okay fine... Why do you suppose Aule didn't bother making a vastly noticible difference between female and male Dwarves? Quite possibly because he overlooked that detail when they were created. Maybe he was intruiged by the fact that they were hard workers, he didn't bother to go over details such as dwarvish features... ...then again, I suck at debating and such if it isn't politics... sweatdrop
