I only know two types of gnomes.
Angsty gnomes and funny gnomes.
Historically, gnomes have a sad dispossition. The article I read that from did not explain how,
the word gnome is derived from a greek word, the one that means knowledge I think.

Its the song that the music box plays.
Something like 'Pop goes the wessel'.
Another joke about gnomish inventions is the sheer magnitude of them.
For example.
He invented a machine that moves an object up or down by using mouse wheels. Its roughly the size of a mountain. WHy? Well, the mice needed to be feed, so he added a mechanism that would drop a food pelit into the cages each time the mice completed a run. But, they need to make the food pelits, so they added a machine that would compress food into pellets, then through process of assembly line deliver the pellets to the despencers. From there, they need to acuire the the food the put in to the compressor, so another system of mouse pully system is used to bring the food from a cart up to the top of the machine that compacts them into pellets, requireing an entirely new system of machines to feed those mice.

gnomes are funny like that.
In EQ, the gnome city of Ak'anon is run by 'clockwork' steam powered animals. they build rats to kill other vermin, then they had to build spiders to control the rats that woudl inevitably breakdown, then humanoid guards to handle intruders and the eventual breakdown of spiders. but when the humanoid ones breakdown, the rat ones clean them up.
all the merchants are clockwork robots. the king is even a clockwork robot, after a contest to see who could make a clockwork that looked and acted like the king the most.
In EQ2, the clockworks have gone Skynet, and booted the gnomes out of the city.

there are vah...kinda. the lore states that the Vah migrated down from Luclin, and interbred with the Kerra, the race they were an offshoot of. thus the Kerran in EQ2 are actually the result of Kerra/Vah interbreeding.
and I was not impressed with how they made them look. not at all.
I was hoping for a more vah look, less kerran. disappointment there.

I think it would have been a wiser move to simply make a new world.
But that would mean more work for the creators.

actually, the encompassing storyline and plots have been really good. the rescue of the frogloks from teh dragon Venekor...the death of Darathar the deciever, also known as the sage of ages and the destruction of the prismatic egg...the cold war between Qeynos and Freeport...the Orc war machine and the fight agasint it on Zek..the corruption and invasion from the demonic looking Horde and Shadowed Men in the enchanted lands..the reemergance of the gods. little events now, but full blown this coming expansion into the elven/dwarven/gnomish homelands.
And the overrealm events. the civil war among dragons and the apparently abandonment of thier goddess for a new god that is a dragon from EQ1...Kerafrym, the Sleeper. who is know called, go figure, the Awakened.
the 45 quest long series into the theft of the Qeynos Claymore.
Personally, I think you would have loved the War of Defiance that set EQ2 up.

I may have.
I don't think my computer could ever handle it though.
Its seems troubled to run Windows at times...
Stupid warrenties.
I think that EQ2 took on too much from WarCraft 3.
WoW copied EQ too much too... Warcraft 3 seems to have stolen some too.
