Yeah, well I started working when I was...16 I think. So the first job was in a restaurant, which sucked. I was there for a year and a half, but I decided it was too high stress for too little pay. Plus I had already missed one summer due to work and I wanted to have the next one to myself. Then Safeway I worked at for about six months until I found the work to be so mind numbingly boring and pointless and the checks were none too great either. I only quit that job for Petland because I had a few friends who worked there and I knew I could get away with doing absolutely nothing and still get paid. But the novelty of that wore off pretty quick, especially after I just got finished working 8 hours as labor, and again, the checks sucked. I figure if you're working two jobs and you quit one and you don't notice a difference in income, the second job wasn't worth it. Mind you while the novelty of that "job" was still there I got some good stories out of it. While I worked there we had a couple of water fights and the new girl set off the fire alarm.
But the job I have now is good. Every day I'm presented with a new challenge and different kinds of work. Like when we first start up with the bees in spring we need to feed them. When we're done feeding we unwrap. Then we split the hives...etc. It's always different. And I like my bosses. And when it comes to the winter it's the same kind of idea. There's a bit more of a "same old, same old" system to cleaning snow, but there's always some kind of new challenge for some reason you have to get by. That's why I like the job I have compared to retail. Yeah retail is easy, but there's ******** all to do. While I was at Safeway on more than one occasion I spent almost an entire 4 hour shift doing absolutely nothing but visiting other departments and screwing around in the back. I served maybe five customers, and cut that many steaks. The rest of the shift I didn't do squat. And this wasn't just once. And did they call me out on it? No. Why? Because they didn't notice no work was done, because the jobs they give you are unnecessary. And I already said I didn't do any work at Petland. For the two months I was there I must have worked around 80-100 hours, maybe more, I really can't remember. Either way I probably only did an actual 4 maybe 6 hours worth of work the entire time. But with the job I have now, you can't say "I have no work to do." because that would be a downright lie. There is always something to do. The reason I didn't mind going between all of those jobs is because that's exactly what they were. Jobs. Now the place I am now I'd like to make my career if possible.
And I think I just made a helper in the Entertainment forum extremely happy. I made a thread about LOTR on bluray, asking when the extended versions are coming out. Only I put it in the main forum because after a quick glance on the subforums I must have missed the LOTR subforum. So after the thread was made I contacted the helper to ask them to move my thread to the proper forum. They gave me the additional note of "Your topic was moved per your request... biggrin "

Oh no, I didn't imply you weren't seeing different things each day. I was just commenting on how I couldn't imagine changing up the administrative side of things often, i.e., moving from boss to boss, starting up my own business, etc. ER docs tend to join one group and get licenses with hospitals, so unless you have a reason to move to another state, there's no worry (for the most part).
I figured that's what retail was all about. This is probably why I never bothered to get a high school job. I never had a 'true' job experience actually, so it all seems so foreign. It's amazing how completely opposite our careers have been. I'm really happy that you've found something to invest your future on.

Shin Seiki Oh no, I didn't imply you weren't seeing different things each day. It's amazing how completely opposite our careers have been. I'm really happy that you've found something to invest your future on. Ohhh yeah. I guess it depends. When I got my jobs it didn't really bother me. Even though I had a new boss and whatnot with all of them, they got to the boss position because they aren't going anywhere. So it's not like I had six bosses at each spot. Well, at least not in rotation, I would have several people with more authority than me. But like I said, those were just jobs. I'd like to stay where I am now, so and the management is going to stay the same. Since it's just the three of us working. Yeah, it'll probably feel weird when you first start working. But so long as you go to work with a willingness to learn (I don't care how trained anyone is, there's always something to learn.), and an attitude to work it's pretty good. I have to be kept busy at work too. Today we were relocating the sand piles left over from the snow season. From the spot I was loading him from and where he needed to take it was about a hour long round trip. So I loaded him and had to wait an hour for him to get back. I was bored out of my skull the entire time. Except for when my boss kept me busy for ten minutes while we loaded the big snow pusher onto the trailer. I hate just sitting around, unless it's travel time between work. Yeah, most of my friends are in the same boat as you too, they're all in school right now. I think it's going to be neat to see how things turn out for all of you in the next 4-8 years once everyone has their degrees and jobs.

Hey Mireo! biggrin Sadly, I think I'm the only lady around right now. sad
I've had a few jobs in the past, all of which were summer jobs. I was a daycare worker. It wasn't that bad, but I only got minimum wage. I worked at a movie theater, mostly doing usher work. I didn't get much more than minimum wage, but it was a nice atmosphere, and I loved getting to see movies for free. The last job I had was being a tutor in summer care program for kids from kindergarten to high school. Again, I got minimum wage, but it was a pretty enjoyable job. The only problem is that I had no control over the kids. But, like I said, those were just summer jobs. I'm graduating in one month, so I'm a bit anxious about finding out what kind of career I'm going to be going into.

I lost my flash drive with all of my work from this semester on it on Friday. When I went back to the library to get my flash drive, it wasn't there. It hadn't been turned in either. So, that means I've lost every single bit of work that I've done this entire semester. It's an almost impossible feat, but I'm going to try to re-do everything that I lost in a short amount of time. If I can't get it done in time, then I won't graduate. I have to cut out all distractions if I am going to have a prayer of getting it done, so I'm going to be taking a hiatus from Gaia until about May 3rd.

I've lost many flash drives along the way, so I empathize. It must be even harder for English majors since papers are key to classes. I would say keep everything from now on uploaded to google docs or if it exists, your school webspace. Even if you have it on your desktop and/or external, physical media can always fail and for something that important, have multiple copies. Hopefully it'll turn up. In the meantime, good luck on your work.
