"Grandmother! The coach has arrived," called Marcus, dressed in his finest clothing at his grandmother's insistance.

"Oh. Dear," said the Duchess, slinking out of her chamber. "I do believe I've fallen ill this evening. How very unexpected."

Marcus gaped.

"You mustn't allow my absence to hinder you, Marcus," continued the Duchess, steering Marcus towards the door and sticking a dethroned red rose with a small red ribbon around it in his hands.

"You are not ill!" exploded Marcus.

She gave him a tragic smile. "If only, dear. If only. Now, hurry to the Earl's manor. You wouldn't want to be late."

"Father...Father please stop it." Terryn was trying her best to evade her father's attempts to overadorn her with large diamonds and pearls from her mother's old stash. She had only the same emerald necklace and ring from before, and did not want to be weighed down by more. "I do not care if it will make me look more refined, I do not want it!" She actually resorted to nearly running away from him, moving quickly through the sitting room. "Marcus will be here soon, you do not want my hair to be all mussed when he arrives."

The earl sighed and frowned. "You are so obstinate." He pocketed the jewelry and walked up to his daughter, lifting her chin to look into her eyes with a small smile. "Just like your mother." He kissed her on the forehead and released her, leaving to return the necklace. As he walked, he tripped, wincing as he hit the ground. "Ow!"

Terryn rushed to his side, terror in her eyes. "Are you alright?"

Terryn's father forced himself to his feet, leaning on his daughter for support. "I tripped on the edge of the carpet, I believe I hurt my ankle. I can not go tonight." He looked down, making sure that Terryn couldn't see his sly grin, hoping that she didn't notice that he had fallen onto his behind, not his ankle.

"Oh dear..." She called one of the servants over and had him bring her father to his room. "At least his grandmother will be there to watch and report." She sighed and exited the manor, waiting outside the door in the moonlight, waiting for Marcus's coach to arrive.

The coach finally ground to a stop in front of the Earl's courtyard. Marcus stepped out. "The Duchess took ill," he said, in a hollow, slightly bitter voice. He raised his eyes. But where was the Earl? Suddenly, he groaned. This was not a coincidence. "They've plotted this, Terryn."

Terryn's eyes narrowed. "And my father said he had injured his ankle." She crossed her arms over her chest and shook her head. "I daresay that you are right. They are most definitely trying to play matchmaker." She looked back to the door for a moment. "Would you like me to go and drag him from his bed?"

Marcus smiled at the very probable image of it, but shook his head. "No. We can use this to our advantage. If we play our parts right, they'll assume that everything went according to their heinous little plan, and that we're completely in love. It takes less effort on our part, really."

"Hmmmm...you make a good point for a complete fool." Terryn smiled and looked back up to the manor, trying to see into his father's slim windows. "I bet you anything that he is watching right now." She rolled her eyes and reached for Marcus's hand. "Come, let us do the best forty seconds of acting in our lives."

Marcus slipped his arm around Terryn's waist instead, and began to lead the two of them towards the coach. "Let us. You know, we needn't go to the banquet at all," he told her.

Terryn nodded as she placed her hand instead on his shoulder. "That is true, and honestly might be much more enjoyable. But where would we go?" She was unsure of what exactly there was to do, especially considering her normally reclusive behavior. As she stepped into the coach, she noticed something laying on the seat. "What is this?" She reached over and picked it up. It was a dark crimson rose, similar to the one she herself had picked the other night. "This would not happen to be one of those...love tokens that I have heard so much about, would it?"

Marcus groaned. "Consider it a heartfelt symbol of my grandmother's wish for a great-grandchild," he said, not yet sitting down. "Forty some minutes from here, there is a knoll that my brothers and I sometimes visit. We could go there." It was a beautiful place, with long, uncut grass and a perfect view of the moon as it rose and sank. What he did not mention was that it was the best place to rid one's self of a hangover, or to idly chat and play cards whilst drunk.

Terryn considered it for a moment as she took the rose in her fingers delicately and settled into her seat. "I suppose anything is better than a banquet hosted by the DuBois family. We can go there instead." She closed her eyes as she sunk into her seat, feeling slightly tired, but mostly just relaxed. It actually felt nice not ot have to keep up appearances for one night.

"To the Knoll," Marcus instructed the coach driver, before sitting in the coach. "The DuBois's have a son, don't they?" he asked, just remembering. "Did he--did they try and...?"

Terryn chukled in that scathing sort of way that was intended to show that there was nothing funny about it. "Twice. First he came alone and the second time they had him bring along the deed to his father's land. That boy is indescribably repulsive in every which way, it is no wonder that his parents wish him to start his own life." She sighed, remembering none too fondly the boys various attempts to court her. "But he was in love with me since we were children, though honestly I am not sure why. I did nothing remotely kind to him at all."

Marcus shrugged. "Well, the fact that he is still alive and looking for prospective brides tells me that you've been relatively kind to him after all," he said, a slight grin on his face.

"Only because my father was grabbing my arm as I tried to lunge at the idiot." Something in the way Terryn said that which suggested that she was not at all joking. She pulled the ribbon from the rose and placed the flower in her lap before using the strip of silk to tie back her hair.
