How long have you been learning RU? And how many hours/day? Wondering how much time and effort you put in to become as good as you are. How did you get started? What books, etc... And what would you say the toughest obstacles to get past at the beginning?

About a year and a half. The time I spend on it varies greatly, and I rarely do any really focused studying anymore. I read BBC Russian a lot and get practice understanding the language. I never formally learned all of the cases, but I can decline any word you throw at me. mad D The toughest obstacle would probably be the cases combined with the prepositions; there's so much to learn there and it's really hard to get the right prepositions with the right cases. I still have issues with that, although I've got a lot of them down. I also still struggle with the verbs of motion. Но несовершенно говорю по–русски... ninja

Hi guys. I posted in the Culture Subforum, but it seems like no one really checks there anymore, so I hope you won't mind me asking here. I've been looking for ways to learn about current Russian politics, but I don't know where to start. Any good websites, books, or the like?

I did see your post there, but didn't respond because I know very little about politics of any sort. xp

I got a Russian dictionary not too long ago. It's another Oxford Beginner's dictionary. It's so awesome. whee There's a lot on using the dictionary, identifying words of different parts of speech, grammar guide, a transliteration guide, declensions and conjugations, numbers, a long list of essential words, phrase finder, life and culture, and social survival tips. Whatcha think?

Eccentric Iconoclast I did see your post there, but didn't respond because I know very little about politics of any sort. xp Я видела записка а не ответила потому что немного знаю о политике. xp I feared that might happenXD I'm sure I'll find something eventually. And when you say "forver loyal" does that mean other languages, or just Russian?

I just brought an Oxford RU dictionary online today. Hopefully, I'll actually learn the order of the alphabet instead of doing it by process of elimination : http://langintro.com/rintro/alphord2.htmI never remember if it hard or soft sign first.

Forgedawn I found a pretty good resource online the other day: http://www.gefix.net/sazov/ Thanks so much! I practically got goosebumps reading the introduction. I'm (very slowlyXP) reading the couple of pages, and will probably download it on the morrow. Also, I'm visiting a Russian home in a couple of days ( eek ), and I just know I'm going to freeze up and not be able to think of anything to ask, so... what do you wish you'd known when you'd started out? What would you ask? I have the whole, "how's America different from Russia" spiel down, but I want something more pithy.

I can't think of much, except maybe ask them how to pronounce ы a couple of dozen times... Actually, get some words that have it in them. razz But that's language stuff, and not all that conducive to conversation. I dunno. biggrin
