It's a good start. What else do you have planned?
biggrin Well, I've got a 4 foot by 1 foot block of polystyrene (the stuff used for packing electronics and such), to carve out the chess piece from. They'll then be given some papier machie or plaster for strength, as well as the obligatory paint job and sealant. This is getting started within the next month, since it's so much.
The helmet and gauntlets will be paper mache. Kinda want to make the crown detachable (because he throws it to a fan in the show), but ehhhh. We'll see.
Cape will be HUGE PAIN IN THE BUTT. I can't find a checker pattern the size I want, so I have to either compromise or paint it myself. D<
I think I'm buying the boots, there's a costume shop here selling a good quality type for about $60. I'm sure I'd get good use of them.

Also, that's a good pattern, Bee!
Good to hear; I can't find anything else half as close as this, and the little details will make it more interesting as a whole, I think (or on second glance, can be ignored totally, as it seems like they're added later *tilts head*).
On a silly note, I'm excited to make the knee-pants for some strange reason. I think it's cuz I imagine Checkmate with those long white sock under his boots, and it makes me giggle.
