ApeKz Fe3r -Dance-At the Arcade- ApeKz Fe3r -Dance-At the Arcade- @ ApeKz: There shouldn't be a requirement for English-speakers to learn Spanish in a country that speaks predominately English. =/ I'd rather learn German, French, or Italian than Spanish, but since there are so many people who don't learn English while living in America for years, my school only offers Spanish. D: My school is too poor to afford any more than one foreign language teacher. Also, it doesn't matter how much one state increases their education system, unfortunately. Compared to other countries, America is still incredibly behind.
[Also, please don't take this the wrong way. It may sound like I'm being bitchy right now, but I'm just tired. D:] xD! There also should a requirement to kick kids out of school who don't take it seriously. However, you have to do the best you can with what you got. In other countries they -have- to learn english in order to pass high school, so why don't we learn multiple languages in order to pass? :3 Yeah. If they did that over half the country wouldn't even move on to high school. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for learning another language, but I think it is ridiculous that they push you towards Spanish simply because of the amounts of immigrants. What if I want to go north to French-speaking Quebec? D: Plus there are a ton of kids who speak Spanish and nothing but in American schools. I have Chinese friends as well as Puerto Rican friends and they were forced to learn English the hard way because their teachers only spoke English. I also know a ton of German exchange students who come to America simply to improve their English. They go back to Germany correcting their English teachers and teaching them non-literal phrases like "kick your a**." Well the "have to" part that you're talking about is the american ignorance every other country hates about us. That's why when you go to mexico and they see you speak spanish, they are happy and excited because they believe that every american has the same attitude you do which is.. "you're in our country, you speak our language." However, America's base language is English which is original from Britain. :3 So.. We don't have a true language. In all technicalities our base language would be native american. I like the fact america is forcing kids to learn another language, and in texas I love the fact we have to know spanish. It gives us a +1 over all the other states. :3 They also changed it so Spanish has to be learned and you have to have another 2 credits of language to pass...
So 4 years of spanish or 2 years of spanish and 2 years of something else. I don't expect anyone in another country to speak English when I go there. [Except Canada, England, Australia, etc] If I go to Greece, I expect people to speak Greek; if I go to Russia, I expect people to speak Russian. And yes, technically America has no established religion or language, but it is apparent from the past that it has always been a pre-dominately christian and english speaking country. =P I like making kids learn another language, but as I said I don't like being forced into Spanish. Also, that is way too many years of foreign language. I think it should be two years of the same language and that is it. I want to work in Germany one day, but I won't survive there very long without knowing German. I don't think knowing how to count to five, say s**t, say "one, two, three, drink", and say no will get me very far. =/ I hated learning Spanish; I learn other languages much quicker because I'm actually interested. I have no interest in Spanish.
@RiGid: True, but you shouldn't force children to learn a language they have no desire to learn. Plus, Spanish has just as many regional differences as English. My friend speaks fluent Spanish since she was born and raised in Puerto Rico, but she still struggles in Spanish class because it contradicts many of the things she did.
@Angel: Lol. Opposite of me. We have two English teachers since one doubles for US History and one of them is a moody old lady who smokes pot. D: The other teacher is just adorable though. He's Irish and whenever you compliment him, he starts stuttering and blushing. His face seriously turns red as a tomato. We always like to tell him how cute he is just to see his reaction. xD

ApeKz Fe3r Sanari Yanaka ApeKz Fe3r Angel_Asuan psh They tried to make me learn spanish in HS by mking it so you needed 2 years of a forgin language to pass but only offered spanish. I told my spanish teacher to stuff it that i livedi n america nd I spoke english. I then took night school classes one for french and one for japanese oh did that woman hate me. Yet another show of american arrogance.. -.-;; I actually agree with her let those who want to go to other Nations learn a forgein Language but as far as I am concerned. They live here they need to speak out language. Just like If I moved to Mexico I would learn there language. Asians annoy me -_- I hate that schools are filled with them and they only speak korean or chinese. When in reality they are all cheating whores. I only like Japanese people, because they are honorable and don't cheat. @Asuan, then you're not american. You're irish with American arrogance. -.-; And we need to learn spanish since they're out neighbors to the south and are inceasing drastically in population. I just honestly hate how close minded you guys are.
What about our neighbors to the north? I'm much more likely to drive ten hours to Canada than drive two days to Mexico. In Canada they speak French and English. Plus, they share the world's longest undefended border with us. I'd much rather chill with the Canadians than be killed in Mexican drug-lord violence.

Then apparently the american government is wrong because with almost every treaty we've made with another country for peace, we force them to learn english. Also, from your statement about predominantly christian, you're saying christianity should rule the whole of America. :3 Which is against seperation of church and state.. It is also making you come across as prejudice toward anyone who doesn't speak english or christian. -.-; Every time I hear someone b***h about learning a language it makes me hate the that much more cause it's nothing but laziness when they should be happy they are being forced to learn a language which is greatly needed. Now, you're saying people who come to america should learn english but you're FORCING them to learn that language because YOU are too lazy to learn their language. :3 Sounds a little bullshitish, eh? Smells alot like Teen Hypocrisy.
I currently know Survivable Korean, Chinese, Tagalog, and Russian. I can speak Spanish and German fluently. Mainly because I don't like being mentally lazy. -.-; Unlike most people of our nation.

Prejudice once again.. Not all mexican's are drug lord rulers and I'm a little surprise with all the racist remarks I'm hearing from the people in this guild on this topic. =/ I live in texas. We RARELY hear s**t on the news about drugs from mexico because it doesn't happen often. People are too poor there to even by drugs. Plus the reason canada has an undefended border is because they have a stable government where as mexico does not. -.- People come up to the US seeking better lives because their government sucks. Not because of Drug Lords or whatever you think they do.

Your better off with spanish because you don't see many Canadians moving down here, as you see Hispanics moving up here. Canada is almost like the U.S. [I assume, never been there]. They have good currency, and security so why would you want to leave a Country like that?
Yes there are different regional Spanish, but it's all Spanish. It might be a word or two of a difference [I know its a lot more, just ex.]. Me, my first language is Portuguese and I can almost completely understand Spanish. A person who speaks spanish [Mexico] shouldn't have much of a difficulty understanding the other person speaking spanish [Cuba].

I currently know Survivable Korean, Chinese, Tagalog, and Russian. I can speak Spanish and German fluently. Mainly because I don't like being mentally lazy. -.-; Unlike most people of our nation. I never agreed to those treaties so there is nothing I can do to change it. I don't see why they would require it, but I don't really give a s**t. That is way before my time. And no, I'm not saying I'm against people who aren't christian and english speakers. I was simply stating that in the same way the government can't tell us what religion to practice, they should not be able to tell us what second language we should learn. So you're calling me lazy? Why? Because I don't want to learn the only damn language available for me to learn? I'm learning Greek, wanting to learn Russian, planning on studying Latin, as well as learning quite a bit of French. Unfortunately though, there is no where around here that teaches any of those languages unless I want to drive two hours to Chicago everyday. And yes, I'm saying that someone who moves to another country should learn their language. Like I had said before, I would learn German if I moved to Germany; I would learn French if I moved to France; and I would learn Danish if I moved to Denmark. I'm not a hypocrite, I just think that you should learn the language of the country you are moving to with no exception of how many people there do speak your native language. I'm also not a damn racist. I was saying that I have never heard of much Canadian violence while I have heard of much violence on the Mexican border. I wouldn't go to Egypt right now with their whole civil unrest thing, but that doesn't mean I have anything against Egyptians. Hell, I even told my cousin I didn't think she should go to Greece when they were having riots. You can't tell me I'm racist against Greeks either when I am mostly Greek and over half my family is Greek.
@RiGid: But you do see many Americans moving to Canada. I'd rather learn the language of a country I'm going to move to rather than the language of a country I will never even visit. I don't like being told what I have to learn. It just pisses me off and makes me want to do it less. Actually, they have more problems with the grammatical differences. They conjugated verbs differently than what the book is teaching. My co-op school's old teacher was from Spain and taught Spain's Spanish and they also have trouble forgetting what they already knew. There probably isn't much difference, but it is still enough to cause them some problems. Just like I can clearly understand English from the South, but not from the North.
