Being and avid SF fan I can tell you are wrong. Dan was actually a top tier character in tournament play do to his kick combos... until they gave them to Ken and finally Akuma.

Secondly the anime exaggerate abilities of the fighters for the sake of story... so if you were to look at their power set for tournament roleplay, you would have to base this off the games. Same as with any and every other fighter.

I said this before in the argument we had about guns, although fighters like Street Fighter's Roster, Super Smash Bro's Roster, Playstation All-star's rosters, K.O.F's roster so forth and so on are broken in outside of Tournament...in Tournament that are all held to a human standard.

They are all balanced to each other.

Case in point... Dan can still beat Ryu if played properly.

That's what these tournament should strive for. Like the GTB shouldn't have such things as handicaps if you are aspiring for things to be fair.

How Dan performs in the game is entirely irrelevant to the what we're talking about. That doesn't do anything to describe how powerful the character is. Case in point, as far as Street Fighter's story goes and most people are concerned, Akuma is a monstrosity. Dan isn't. People are going to go with the former, not the latter; he's more familiar. Even if Dan is great in game tournaments, that doesn't mean anything; it doesn't carry over to roleplay at all or make him a more powerful character, it simply means that - within the context of the game, not the story - that Dan is efficient. Most people aren't even familiar with the tournament scene anyways, so it wouldn't matter.

Also, there's absolutely nothing that says someone would "have" to base their powersets off of the game rather than the anime. When you say Street Fighter, people aren't just going to automatically exclude the anime or something for no readily apparent reason. That's the entire issue; people interpret things differently and if you tell them "Street Fighter" you don't know that they're going to just rely on the games, or the anime, or the live action movie.

If someone told me "Street Fighter is the level we're shooting for", would I think of the games mostly? Yeah. But that doesn't mean everyone would. That's the issue with a vague statement for a power level, is that people will a) have multiple interpretations and b) the more vague a statement is, the more potential interpretations there are.

That's the issue. A vague statement like "Street Fighter or King of Fighters" can be interpreted in a lot of ways. That's why you get so many characters entered at vastly different power levels.. because the statement is vague.

Case in point: every year of the tournament since the statement has been used, with people entering characters at wildly different power levels because even if they see the tiny descriptor, they're interpreting it differently, and with a statement that vague, you can't really blame someone for interpreting it in whatever fashion they do.

If you wanted to keep the Street Fighter tag, you could expand on it and develop it to give a more concrete explanation, and to provide some boundaries on the minimum and maximum requirements. But acting like there's only one way to interpret the statement as it is, or that people are just going to ignore every SF media beyond the games is silly. It's clearly not the case.

Then again, Vin has bumped the acceptable power level up and down every year, so it's a moot point because the statement stays the same no matter how Vin's approach changes, so you may as well interpret it however you want and accept whatever character you like because you really don't know WHAT the actual acceptable level is since it's never explained or updated.
