I liked Gatsby, possibly for the characters themselves. I think with Catcher literary professors hold it to such a high regard not only with what's within the book but because Salinger only wrote one book and shunned everyone else from questioning him about it again. Incidentally, there was an agent who almost got Salinger to publish his second novel but because the agent spoke to reporters about it and had a whole brouhaha regarding the publishing of the book, Salinger didn't submit the book by the appointed time and never spoke to the agent again. I dunno what Salinger's problem is, to be frank. Salinger wanted a small publishing company to produce his book -and- he wanted it to go straight to the library instead of being sold. Since publishers cannot publish a book without idk money, they didn't go that route.

If Salinger knew about the internet he could have just posted it on there and went about his ways. He didn't want ANY press on his works. What usually happens with famous people? They always get the opposite.

I didn't see any symbolism in the work either. Maybe because I was a high school student at the time? I thought it was very monotonous throughout the whole book and I don't think the ending answered anything (well, except the epilogue-type chapter er---I won't ruin it for you, Pyre? Haha)

Maybe the literary 1337 like anti-heroes. People love Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughter House Five and I hhhhhhhhhate it with a fiery passion. If I wasn't forced to read it for class I would have chucked it. I hate that some of the story is still branded into my skull. Thanks school. stressed

Perhaps I was reading too much into him with the whole 'blah' take on everything. Sure, he uses his colorful vernacular to voice his distaste... but I read the hypocrisy as more he didn't understand s**t about s**t and would rather face the world as "bah, I hate you" than try to find things to give a damn about. He was a cynic. Everyone was a moron or a phony because if they got close he'd end up regretting it. So why bother putting forth the effort? ******** 'em. Whatever.

Though, yeah, perhaps I did read too much into him with that assumption. User Image

I don't think you read too much into it - that's a likely explanation given the death of his younger brother. But having a reason doesn't endear him to me any more than not having one. Holden himself says something along those lines about how girls always date assholes and say they have an inferiority complex. Well, maybe they do have an inferiority complex, but that doesn't mean they aren't assholes.

Plus the controversy over the content and then the whole deal with John Lennon's murderer? I read an article on censorship not too long ago where the author talked about this trend that if a book is banned, it automatically seems to gain literary merit. She basically said that just because some great books are banned for putting forth controversial ideas doesn't mean that all banned books are great books - sometimes trash is just trash.

Nah... there's definitely symbolism. For instance, I know that godammed red hat means something. I just don't really care enough to think about it too hard.

Definitely agree about the monotony though. You'd be as shitfaced as Holden himself if you took a drink every time he called someone a "moron," a "phony," or a "prince." Every time he repeats his last sentence (even though he says he hates people who do that when he's talking to his history teacher). Every time he says "It gives me a pain in the a**" or "It kills me." Every time he uses the adjective "old," even when talking about CHILDREN. Every time he complains that "nobody ever passes on your message." UGH. SO. REDUNDANT.

I like anti-heroes. s**t. American comicbooks are full of them. But this character? Not so much. I get that he feels alone and alienated and depressed and all these typical angsty teenage things - but it's pretty hard for me to feel sorry for him when he spends the whole damned novel boozing and hitting on women while he blows not only his parents' but also his kid sister's money. How much of a dickhead can you be?

I woke up with that rainbow unicorn song stuck in my head.

Man, I hope that guy isn't always like that. I was really excited to be in a guild on MS, but if he's just going to sit there and whine about how his life sucks I'ma leave it.

Say... does anybody have the old rocky puppy gif saved? I don't think it's on Gaia anymore, and I just had an idea...

Edit: Nevermind... they moved him to the FAQ. xd

Yeah I think the Catcher book has something to do about the time it was written, like there weren't enough angsty teenager stories, I guess.

Oh god, the sparkles, they burn!! User Image

Really, though. Ugh. Please let them be temporary and related only to a very very short event.

Also, I bought a new hat.

DAMNIT! User Image

Why couldn't they make it so the background area to different items is a different color? Why does it have to be an ANIMATED sparkles layer that goes over the items? (Which incidentally prevents mouseover text from telling you what the damn item even is...)

Seriously... I can see where the intent is behind a lot of these "improvements", but Gaia? ******** off.

EDIT:

Hello!

First off, I think most of Gaia is pretty excited about what's going to happen with this new plot line. As for making the animated sparkles on our premium items, thumbs up for scam prevention. But there is one thing about it; many users, including myself are worried about the lag and eye strain the animations cause in our inventory, especially when we have tons of items in there.

Is there a way we can have a static indicator for premium items? Just like a the little icon for soul-bound items and for D*C?

AH HA! Why, though couldn't it have been worked on before releasing the sparkles? You know, it's a damn good thing Gaia doesn't manufacture cars...

Hello!

First off, I think most of us are pretty excited about what's going to happen with this new fuel efficient hybrid. As for making the Sparklemobile run on SF tears, thumbs up for finding a cheap renewable fuel source. But there is one thing about it; many drivers, including myself, are worried about the inability to stop, especially when we're actually driving.

Silly, Xani, You've been on Gaia even longer than I - you really should know by now that Gaia never finishes anything before releasing it. The car analogy made me giggle, though. whee

True... Man, remember when events always started late because Gaia started them without all the features working and we had database outages for hours on end? Or when they released housing, but only had enough addresses for a mere fraction of the userbase? Or how about that one time they took a couple years working on their massive game project, working in secrecy and making sure everything was going to be smooth sailing, only to have a few weeks of bugs and complaints when they finally released it? Ah, Gaia... what a bunch of kooks.

*sigh* I really need to find a good Hive crew. Why is it that when I try to start one, nobody ever joins? I'm a pretty decent leader.

But no, I always have to wind up joining somebody else's crew. Somebody who doesn't communicate and wouldn't know what the ******** to instruct if they did.

First off, buff check. Secondly, KILL THE ******** LANDSTRIDERS FIRST. I'm just sitting here, watching crew member after crew member get dazed because the ******** think shockroaches are more important. rolleyes

Was hot today. Wanted 'least a breeze. Been finally practicing movie pres. Doing alright. Been signing with genie more really enjoying it! ♥ Really thinking about changing out of focusing to get a degree in art, with how the school has been screwing us art students over. >( Deeply thinking about going for a degree to become an ASL interpreter. Will still do art on the side though, just not my main focus any more.

Pyre: If you can wait until the end of the month I'll finally be free from school until the fall semester and we can do zomg crews. I know Sevi and Sonia have been wanting me to join them for crewing.
I know exactly what you mean though. a lot of people don't know how to crew well or even lead a crew around.
For me I can lead, but I enjoy being a tank or being support.

Also, I kind of enjoy the sparkles in my inventory, it'll help me organize it when I have the time to do any sort of thing like that. xp
Thank gawd it's just these sparkles and not something I'll have to kill because of twilight fan girls. evil

Ahahaha, I told my boyfriend that Gaia made my inventory sparkle and his response was "vampire inventory!"

I would very much like the function to turn it off, please please.

Yeah, I'd rather not lead, myself. I'd rather just kill stuff 'til it's dead. But after winding up in so many shitty crews, I've kinda started to take over and tell people what the hell they should be doing. Of course, they rarely listen.

It's kinda laughable, really. I was in this EB crew a few days ago with this chick who said she was one of the best healers in zOMG! Well, it took three godamned hours to even get there, since she had to have her buddies in the crew and they kept leaving the game, and then she'd reinvite them, and we'd have to wait for them to catch up, and blech. Thanks to this, the girl with div got fed up and quit. (Actually, I think she may have fallen asleep. It was ******** 1 AM by that time.) Even though we had waited a billion times for not-so-useful players, she didn't want to go recruit anybody else or send someone back for div. Oh yes, EB on hard with no div. BRILLIANT.

So by the time we get to the body, we all have NO stamina. I got behind it, and popped a squat to recover a bit. Of course, it chose that moment to release the missiles and I wound up dazed. And do you know what she did? She ******** r1'd defib. If you're "one of the best healers" in the godamned game, you should know r1 defib is ******** WORTHLESS. Then when I died again, she did it again! So we all died because we didn't have div and our supposed epic healer apparently doesn't know what the hell full rage is. Hell, even r2 might have been ok. It would have unlocked coyote and I could have run like hell, but no... r1. And then she didn't even heal me any. rolleyes

So yeah. tl:dr I'll be happy to crew with somebody with brains once your finals are over. gonk

I'm not sure how you could play without Div. It has a permanent spot for me. Even with it I lose stam too quick. Then again, in Zomg I just prefer to load out with nothing but buffs and two or three attack moves and try to rush through everything that I can.

And yeah, ******** the sparkles. I like the idea of being able to spot things in my inventory like that, but I loaded it up to see what it was like and it looked like Liberace rubbed his balls all over my inventory. Why not just a semi-opaque blue/green/red background for items? Same thing, easier to code, easier for people's machines too handle. Gaia never seems to get the "less is more" aspect of design. I still want them to turn off those notifications for things in my wishlist I either have or don't give a damn about. I can turn off notifications for everything else BUT that s**t.

Then again, you think back to things like the old events where nothing ever worked and the events ended up going for days simply because they were always broken to the point to where no one could do them.

Thinking about it, I'm actually amazed because they are able to code a few things well. You know, like Cinemas, and Rally, and all the other things no one cares about.

And bah gawd, level 3000 and still struggling to loot items in Land of Carnage. I know I could be doing this all more efficiently if I tried, but I sort of like the chance aspect of the challenge. Makes it feel good when I can run away with a bunch of rank 39 items out of a level and increase everyone's stats by several thousands in one go.
