Sure enough, the second haunted house he asked was understaffed. They were beyond pleased that he was wanting to help out and quickly sent him on his way. Ares spoke with a couple other people to make sure it was alright before finding himself a hidey hole to wait for the kids in. He'd gotten good and settled, candy bucket tucked out of the way, when the first set of freshlings paraded by.
"BOO!" he shouted, banging on the wall and making a fuss. Where he was, the imp would be out of sight, but they could certainly hear him. A shrill scream told him that he'd gotten at least one of them. There was a general scuffle as the group all tried to run at once, and a clank as something hit the ground. After waiting a few minutes, he peeked out from his hiding spot, easily spotting a mint-colored bucket that had been left behind. Collecting the bucket, he wondered if the freshling would return for it.
A half an hour later and nobody had shown up to collect it. Almost feeling bad for it, Ares added the spoils to his own bucket. There was an automatic 'ick' face as he realized the only things inside was a pink nezubat plush and some raisins. No wonder the kid hadn't returned for it.

Before the other nightmare could reply on whether or not they wanted to trade the sugar plush, Pepper's caretaker called for her. "Pepper, c'mon, we gotta go," the demon heard. "Sorry! I forgot I had to stay with her," Pepper told the other two. "I'll see you later," she called out with a wave as she made her way over towards the caretaker who was awaiting her.
Sliding her hand into the older demon's, Pepper trailed alongside her, glancing back every now and again. It had been awfully rude of her to just take off like that. She probably should have waited for the other two to say goodbye before she had taken off. Hopefully she'd see them later. As often as she glanced back, it wasn't a surprise when she didn't notice a couple seniors dropping a bag of chocoskulls and a pretty green and pink plush into her pail. One of them ruffled her hair and she gasped. "You'll mess my hair up!" she cried. "Happy Halloween little mermaid!" The older geist told her with an amused grin.

Dante noticed a small Imp, someone young like him, standing alone and he looked up to his mother, who encouraged him to go over and talk to them. With a grin, Dante ran over to the Imp and waved. "Hi there! Are you all by yourself?"

Ivy turned slowly from the stall she'd just finished playing at and looked over the other freshling. She took a moment to push back her flower crown as it had slipped forward while she'd studied the little bats for the game and then slowly nodded in affirmation that she was in fact alone.
She then looked around him for a moment as if seeing if they were alone or perhaps had a group of friends waiting just behind him. All she could see was an adult who was trying to watch and yet not watch at the same time. Evidently a caretaker or something as the two didn't look alike. Although that didn't mean anything, kids did get adopted after all. She waggled her claws at the caretaker/parent and then looked back at the Demon boy and offered a smile.
Oh. A rock. Coralie mustered her best smile and thanked the geist anyway. After all, it was called trick or treat for a reason. Still. A rock. That was... fairly uninspired. With a smile, she stepped to the side to let her family have their turns.
At the next game booth, Adelinde knew that she hadn't done so well as some others. Grimacing a little as the ball she was tossing went wide and fell to the ground, she fully expected to get nothing. However, to her mixed chagrin and pleasure, the Imp behind nthe table had other ideas.
"Everyone gets something! Here you go."
And while Adelinde couldn't exactly be thrilled about the gummie she was given, the cat plush did a lot to make up for it.
Ashlynn's luck seemed to be about on par with Coralie's. Except instead of an honest rock, she was given candy that might as well have been a rock. Still she thanked the giver politely enough and edged over to where Coralie stood and the two compared buckets for a moment. As they were talking softly and watching the children, Ashlynn felt a cold, wet something touch the back of her knee. Stifling a shriek, she jumped and spun around to look. Sitting in front of her was a gorgeous fox who seemed to be studying her as much as she was studying it.
"Oh!," she stammered. "Well hello to you too!"
Even as the gum went into her bucket, Zahneel knew that it was quite likely to end up staying there for the rest of time. She wasn't fond of gum in general. But this one had a shady look that made her suspect that it was probably going to be gross. Ah well. She'd surely have better luck at the next booth!
The fishing game was probably Binhdi's favorite. It was so simple and straightforward. And as it had just yielded the cutest bracelet, she was even more inclined to like it. Cute bracelets were the best.
When Gilby's turn came, they weren't entirely convinced that the odd, bright green gummie was a good thing to recieve. But the young hybrid was more than willing enough to reserve judgement since they hadn't tried it yet. Far better recieved was the so cute bat plush. Grinning, they held it up to show their mommas.
Before they'd left the house, Prague had asked Hamish if he was sure that he wanted to go to the festival. Because Prague was very good about stuff like that, he'd noticed. She didn't try to bully or jolly him along if he wasn't interested in things. He'd said yes to the trick or treating simply because it would be something he could do with her and they'd both end up having fun. The first booth they'd stopped at, she'd stayed close, but not too close. A quiet, encouraging presence.
And once he'd tossed the rings that had been handed to him, only to be given a weird hand made of gross popcorn, he thought he was going to need that encouragement. It wasn't exactly an auspicious beginning to the night.

Xenophon paused at the bottom of the stairs. The stairs led up to a lovely house, very old-fashioned, but also absolutely lovely. It would have been built about a hundred or more years ago. It looked awfully fancy--there were jack-o'-lanterns all over the place, carved with silly and happy faces. But somehow, all those faces seemed to be taunting the young Chimera.
Houses...
Last year, when he still lived at the orphanage, they had gone trick-or-treating in the city. But there all of the people had taken one look at Xeno's giant fangs and bloodred eyes and screamed, slamming the door in his face. Jurvik said it wouldn't be like that here. And if he couldn't trust the man who had started as his best friend and then became his father...?
He looked up at the Geist, who looked down at him and gave him an encouraging smile. "People aren't like that in Asphodel Garden, remember?" he murmured. "It's all town-and-gown here."
Xeno tilted his head. "What and what?"
"I'll explain later. Come on."
There was already a crowd of kids at the door with a caretaker--other Academy freshlings. Xeno squeezed through to the front and held up his bucket. "Trick or treat?"
The adult at the door...smiled, and dropped a candy apple in his bucket! "Thank you! Happy Haunted Hallows!" he said. He looked over at the Chimera girl next to him. "This place is really nice!" he said. Then he blinked. "Hey, you've got slit pupils, too!"
Haunted Hallows was not his thing. He was an adult, dangit. Well, he still felt like he was an adult. Technically he was a child again. But he still thought of himself as an adult!
Haunted Hallows used to mean a universal truce, one of the few every year. It meant a time in which all of the big leaders had to talk civilly to each other; it was the topsy-turvy day of the year. So maybe it was appropriate to go trick-or-treating. Especially in a frilly blue gingham dress.
Temperance wasn't here, but Batholith wasn't grafted to him or anything. He could go out here and have fun on his own. For one thing, there were plenty of games to play. For another, although he was wearing a dress, and although he had borrowed a curling iron to put ringlets in his enormous hair, he felt...confident. Maybe it was the experience of looking pretty. Maybe it was the feeling of soft clothes, or of letting go. Or maybe it was the fact that the short sleeves and off-the-shoulder design left no mistake that he worked out. Muscles and scars still showed. He was the most bad-*** Little Red Riding Hood at this entire fair.
He refused any attempt to pass him a bucket at first, but when it became clear that he was expected to have one, he gave in. "Black, please," he said, then went back to searching the crowd for a familiar face.
Foras! Hey, that was someone to hang out with. He made his way through the crowd, ignoring plonks in his bucket along the way. "Foras! Hey, dude, how's your evening been?"
"Ah hope so, too. At this point, she's nearly missed halfa the event...Oo, nahce toss!" Sara clapped him on the shoulder and held up the eyeballs. "Yeah! That woulda been clever! Imagine caramel an' chocolate skulls an' ahballs. Ah'd go fer that, wouldn't you?" she asked the vendor. The vendor nodded.
Sara put her candy away and surveyed the booth. She didn't really want to leave--it was in the optimal position for catching Maria. "Can we play again?" she asked the vendor.
The vendor thought about it for a moment and shrugged. "Okay. But each of you can only play three times in a row."
"Sounds reasonable," she said. She picked up another ball and waited for the vendor to put the bottles back up. Once he had finished, she gently lobbed the ball towards the target.
Score! She'd knocked all of the bottles over this time. The vendor tossed her a plush and a bag of popcorn. "Nicely done!"
Laurel spun around again at the sound of bells ringing in the distance. Emma had to be close by, he could hear the bells from their costume loud and clear! If only these big crowds would move out of his way so he could see! Why did he have to be so much shorter? Ugh!
He plodded onward until something squished beneath his foot. The demon grimaced.
"... That better have been one of those nasty poo gummies, or I'm going to get really really mad." He grumbled, kicking his shoe off and raising it cautiously to his nose. Yep, it smelled like sugar free chocolate, that wasn't so bad. He took a napkin from one of the booths and began wiping at his shoe before slipping it back on and resuming his search for Emma.

Sascha could tell that Dahlia was nervous about the Specterfox that he had found by how eager she was to cling to his hand. He'd never seen her be afraid of anything, something that made him think that she could be taking after him just a little. However, that thought changed when they approached the next booth and Dahlia allowed the Specterfox to nuzzle her.
"Mmm, this cotton candy looks good, doesn't it?" He said, picking a piece off for himself, before noticing a booth with plushie set out just ahead. "Hey! More plushies! Do you want to go pick one out, Dahlia?"
While it was true that Dahlia was a little wary of the new pet her dad had found, it wasn't as though she was petrified of them. She was happy to have it nuzzle her, just as long as it didn't try to n** at her, and turned toward the plushies.
"Can I have the brown one, daddy? I can't reach it!" She exclaimed, wiggling toward it until it was handed to her. However, along with the plushie came a bundle of weird looking candies. They felt hard, were they stale? Ew! Why would someone hand out old candy? That was mean!

It was clear that Tarin wasn't as impressed as Quilo was. He sighed--there wasn't anything for that. He loved scary things, and spending long hours in deserted places (like the public library's newsprint section). Tarin...was far more practical than he was. He was the dreamer. She was the schemer. That was the way it worked between them. So he decided not to mention the Nezubat now clinging to the back of her shirt. If she hadn't noticed it, then he wasn't going to bring it up.
Instead, he looked over at Ella. She had received another lovely bracelet. He smiled. It looked so pretty on her! Though admittedly, everything, even her cop outfit, looked pretty on Ella. On Tarin, too, but...in a different way. He lead the girls through the next open doorway, which led into the kitchen. He gasped in appreciation. A single lightbulb, flickering, humming, and sickly green, illuminated a room covered in blood and gore. Bloody knives hung from the ceiling, moving with a soft and gentle breeze. The stove was alight with [a fake] fire, and something sizzled in the pan above their heads. Judging by the wet and squishy thing dangling from the frying pan, it was definitely intestines. Big intestines. Quilo grinned. Awesome! Slasher flick! He was so taken in by the decor that he didn't notice anything in his bucket.
Sequoia happily went along her way after getting her second nezubat plush in a row. Maybe other houses had plushies on their porches, too? If they did, she hoped they bought enough to share with everyone!
"Wow! Another plushie!" She exclaimed, picking a black and orange plush out from the bowl at the second house. "And it has a bracelet! That's so cool!"

Emma couldn't help but take a nibble out of the cotton candy they'd been given as they continued their search for Laurel. However, the sound of their roommate's voice calling out broke them from their thoughts again.
"Laurel? I'm right here!" The called, wiggling left and right. "Can you see m-"
Then, something squished against their shoe, and they looked down to see a green pile of goop stuck to their foot. Oh no! Laurel would be so upset to see the mess they'd made of the costume! Where was a napkin when you needed one?

"I don't theenk thet's es good a theeng es you theenk eet ees," she said sadly. Her voice was small and soft. "Now I heve to leeve in a whole ahther place where I don't know eny of the rules. I don't even understend your way of speaking." She rubbed her eyes. No. Good thoughts, Ustule. Think good thoughts.
"I theenk I should maybe continue my treeck-or-treating on my own," she said. "I need some time on my own." She put her purple plushie back in her bucket. Well, according to him, she'd gotten that rare one, and it had been the first one she got! Score? It made her feel a little better. With that, she purposely marched away from him. She was getting tired, that's why she was feeling so upset. And Sphery would be missing her back home. She put on a smile and walked over to a cluster of adults. "Treeck-or-treat?"
One adult smiled and handed her a puff of...something. Ustule thanked her and cautiously tasted it. She squeaked in surprise--the sweet stuff melted away the instant it touched her tongue. She stared at it, eyes wide.
The adult laughed nervously. "It's cotton candy. Haven't you had cotton candy before?"
Wordlessly, the little Litch shook her head. The adult blinked. "Oh! Well, um...I hope you enjoy it! Happy Haunted Hallows!"
"Thank you!" Ustule squeaked. Her confidence had been restored!
