Athran Forgedawn, but isn't privyet just used for friends and people you know? I mean, If you do something more official in RU wouldn't you have to use zdravctvoitte/zdraste? Ever since it's became common knowledge that I've started RU, my brother has been doing a load of Russian/rushin' jokes. I'd love to say to him 'shut up' in RU. Anyone know how it's said/written? I ain't gonna trust a translator with something like that. Yeah, but so far, all the Russians I've chatted with online are fairly informal biggrin

Same here.
It's the same way with French. I -never- see people using the vous forms of verbs unless they're talking to more than one person.
People are way more formal in real life.

biggrin I got this book of awesomeness! Picture word book. No kidding. It's for kids, I think, but it's got a word list in the back and it's got pictures with scenes and the words in Russian written on them and yay! So far, I've only learned (in terms of NEW words, and I got it like 10 minutes ago) kot / koshka, but still... Yay! dramallama rofl dramallama Transliterated the words for laziness, of course. Though I did get a program so I can learn to type in Russian instead of using character map smile http://www.leeds.ac.uk/russian/online_practice.htm

There's an even easier way, www.translit.ru transliterates english letters to russian letters in the same moment you write them. Also it checks for spelling mistakes.

Not the best for transliterating proper names, though, especially with their interpretation for y as ы. Like the name Lydia should be Лидия rather than what it gives, Лыдиа. Harry should be Гарри rather than Харры, etc.

It's not really for transliteration but instead being able to reliably get the letters you want.

Yeah, but you Can do that with translit.ru and those sites... but you can do this without an internet connection. Our dorm has an odd internet agreement that involves rather frequent scheduled downtime.

I've recently figured out how to set my computer at home so the keyboard is Russian, but that's not very practical...so I set it so it types in phonetic Russian. So if you type in R, it comes out as P and so on.

See if you can find a permanent pen with a fine tip and then write the letters on your keyboard. surprised
Upper left corner works well.

There are also stickers available, but as I have a laptop, I'd rather not put stuff over the extra characters already marked on my keyboard (such as the number pad, which I use to make characters such as accents--Hellooooo, ASCII! )
...Why do people not use their keyboards more?? *sob* A mouse shan't do you nearly as much good as a well-used keyboard... I almost never click...
♥Function key. Meaning ♥fn.
And by the way... that's [numlock] [alt + fn + L, f, n, . ]
