I woudl prefer to be a villian. they are more fun to play, more flexible. the only real 'rules' for a villain is usually they have to be defeated by the end of the film. other than that, anything works.
Heroes, on the other hand, have to be 'good' guys, willing to save teh girl/city/world becuase it's right, or have some minorly tormented past that the villian is either responsible for/part of that makes him want to stop him. he has to have a love interest, and get the right girl. or the love interest has to be part of the 'tormented past' deal.

When one of the world top scientist catch phrase is "Its Clobbering Time", you really got a think about what level of education they really had.
THat aside, Dr. Doom is probably the greatest comic book villian ever created. THen again, I wouldn't read most of the comics he's in.
So, it doesnt' matter now does it.
FOr the most part, I find villany to be lacking... anthing of substance. Most are either trying to gain or hold power, often making more mistakes than are necessary.

I find a villan who does what he does because he tihnkgs it's helping people is scary. It means he feels as justified as the hero, and will go to any lengths that a hero would to get the job done.

You have an agenda and then you do whatever is necessary when it is necessary to accomplish it.
That icludes cutting off your own limbs or getting all your minions killed.
(not to be confused with villains who call themselves ninjas.)
