Ilya had no idea who this new girl was, but he knew immediately that he liked her. She was really very pretty, and she looked super kind! And she seemed to know Kawa, at least a little bit, enough for her to approach him with a somewhat warm welcome when she approached. He almost completely forgot to notice that Thre seethed in her little corner about another woman talking to what he could only assume that she would refer to Kawa as ‘her man.’ The boy almost laughed at that, but he refrained from doing that just so that his friend wouldn’t feel judged. That would be very mean, would it not?
So the little boy let the two talk, watching how painfully obvious it was that Thre was super into Kawa. Specially when the new girl and Kawa interacted so casually. Ilya wondered for a moment if they were friends, or something else. They didn’t seem particularly close, though the girl did look very kind and like she would want to help if there was a need for it. And for that reason in particular Ilya grew fond of her very quickly. When the woman bent to his level, which he was actually rather tall for his age is it wasn’t too much of an issue, and introduced herself Ilya grinned and introduced himself right back in the happiest tone he could muster. ”Hi! I’m Ilya, I only just became a Baiter. You should come over for cookies too!” It was Ilya’s very nature to be happy and bright, trusting anyone that came into his vicinity. It was likely not a very good way to live his own life, but he was still very happy and that was what mattered the most at this point.
”Ilya! Thre! Ty doma! YA tak rada videt' vas, rebyata, vse v poryadke!” Suddenly came from the now open door to his new home, then a warm embrace followed very soon after that. ”Ooooo YA slyshal, chto missiya byla zakonchena, no ya ne slyshal, kak on poshel. Vy, rebyata vyigrat'?” She continued, asking how the mission was and if they won. Seemed that rumor got around at the base extraordinarily fast, so the fact that she knew the mission was over was barely surprising.
Then was when his mother noticed that he wasn’t exactly around the same company as he was when she last saw him. Realizing how rude she had been, she switched to English and introducing herself properly. ”Hi, I’m Katya, Ilya’s mother. Where’s Acel?”
At that question, Ilya shifted uncomfortable, wondering what it was that he should say to his mom about it. Unfortunately, Katya seemed to pick up on the discomfort that Ilya put off, her green eyes suddenly hardening. ”Well, then. Everyone inside, I have a few questions about the Baiters and what it is you do when you’re not on missions.” Ilya frowned, knowing full well that she was probably going to berrade his two new friends with questions about Acel, who he was, and whether or not she can trust anyone at the organization to keep her only son safe. That meant that these two were in for a world of hell, more than likely. At least they would get cookies out of it. And they seemed like very nice people! So maybe Katya would be able to see that and be nice to them? That was what the little boy hoped for, at least.
Katya ushered them all inside, Ilya taking the time to look around the area that would be his home new home. It was bigger than he expected, but he couldn’t count the rooms or even go take a look at them yet, as suddenly his mother launched into questions about whether or not he was okay, then demanded that he explain what happened on said mission.
Ilya hesitantly explained, going over the big bads they had to fight and how scary they all were. He went over how almost all of them were finished, but the last baddie managed to kill both Ilya and Thre within quick succession. He paused, however, before explaining what it was that Acel had said and did. It was so… strange, and he didn’t know how to describe it, so he looked to Thre for help, hoping that she had better words for it.

Corrinne’s smile faded momentarily when the young girl turned away from her. ‘Was it something I said?’ Corrinne thought to herself but after retracing her words she couldn’t find anything that would have caused this kind of reaction. It must have had something to do with her interaction with Akio Kawaguchi; did this young one have feelings for him? Not that she could blame her he was quite attractive. The boy on the other hand was much more pleasant, he seemed instantly to like her; this made her smile return as he introduced himself to her. “Wonderful to meet you Ilya, I like your name.” She beamed at his proud stance.
Pausing to look up to Akio as he spoke to her, she was amazed to hear that it wasn’t Dal’Mori who had won the tournament. Though, she remembered this fae character as Akio put it being very strong too. It was at this time that Corrinne caught the smallest whiff of cookies baking; the smell was warm and enticing. And before she could think an older woman obviously of Russian origin offered an invitation to partake in the desserts. “Nice to meet you Katya,” Corrinne managed to get out before being jostled with Akio through the door into what she assumed to be the apartment of the children and their mother.
Politely taking one of the cookies offered to her she nibbled on it as she listened to the conversation between Ilya and his mother. Having no idea on what they were actually saying, she had never tried to learn Russian before but at this moment she wished she had. Although her not knowing, gave the two a kind of privacy that Corrinne slightly envied.
“Acel?” Corrinne answered Katya, “Unfortunately I don’t know much about him; many of the other Baiters are still a mystery to me. Even Kawaguchi here, though I have met some of his family.” Corrinne glanced at Akio before returning her full attention to Katya, “I actually haven’t been on a mission yet, only training, and the tournament. It’s a little embarrassing but the children are probably more experienced than I am.” Corrinne paused as Katya began to ask Ilya and Thre questions, taking little snippets out of what Ilya said, Corrinne began to piece together some of their history, though she was still rather confused.
From what she could gauge, something strange happened between the children and Acel. From what she could remember of the man, he wasn’t that amazing, a little emotional. And wasn’t he a farmer before? Or was that Dal’Mori? The information was all blending together and her absence didn’t help any, being away from everyone made her a bit hazy on their backgrounds. She was amazed that she could remember Akio’s name but for some reason as soon as she saw him the name appeared in her mind.
Corrinne still caught bitter glances from Thre and after being in her presence for a few minutes, this only made Corrinne smile. Her intuition was telling her that the young girl was jealous of her, this almost made Corrinne want to appear closer to Akio but she held herself back since Akio looked barely there as it was. She would wait and see how her relationship with everyone progressed before acting hastily.

Threigze Fionsi Bez truda, ne vitashish i ribku iz pruda.
Watching the interactions going on around her, she found herself rather displeased. She knew that she was being unreasonable, Summer had pretty much hit that nail on the head, but she couldn't help it. Hormones were a b***h. Even more so when there wasn't anyone who could accurately teach her about her own. She'd been given The Talk before, sure, but the truth of the matter was, her body was alien. No one honestly knew how hers would work. Thus, she had no idea if this was normal, over reaching, underwhelming, or just right.
Ugh, ******** that noise. She would just deal with what came, and to hell with the consequences. Too much to think about.
She barely paid any attention to Akio and Corrinne as they interacted, and didn't bother to look towards Ilya when he spared her a glance. However, there was one thing that completely stole her attention. Ilya's mom came out. The sight of the woman caused her throat to tighten slightly, and she nearly choked on her own tears, which she fought furiously against, having no desire to allow Akio to see her cry.
Feeling those arms encircle her for the first time in what felt like an eternity, Thre didn't even care if Akio saw her cry, didn't care if that hooker saw her cry either. She didn't hear Summer berate her again for her lack of attempts towards being friends. All she could feel was the love from the first mother figure she had ever had. The only woman on the planet she would call mom because she truly felt she was her mom, and not out of respect for the fact that she acted like her mom. She hugged Katya tightly, mindful of her new strength and subsequently her fragile nature comparatively, extending the hug longer than she was certain Katya wanted too, but she couldn't help herself.
Pulling back, she quickly wiped her eyes, trying to hide the fact she was crying from everyone as best she could. In her defense, it had been an emotional day. She left behind Alex, found Ilya, became a Baiter, died and was now seeing the equivalent of her mother all in the span of less than twenty-four hours.
Coming into what was insanely likely to be her next home, she smiled at the smell that assaulted her nose. It was a little lacking for any kind of personality, but the smell was enough to make the place feel like home. It made her smile. As those around her began speaking about Acel and such, Corrinne made a comment that made her puff up in pride. She was more experienced than that harpy! That thought drove her to stand a little closer to Akio, wondering if perhaps such a fact was enough to garner a little bit more attention?
Then Ilya went over her mission.
She inserted a few facts here and there from her side of things, given that they both had their own fights to begin with. When Ilya got to the bit about Acel losing his s**t, she felt the anger flare up into her system again. When Ilya looked towards her to finish explaining, apparently having come to a loss for words, she had no problem vomiting up what she thought of the man.
"He's a pathetic waste of space. He thinks he's so high and mighty, but he's really just a whiny little b***h." She spat venomously. " 'Oh, I'll protect you children with my life!' " She said, imitating his voice rather well, while posing in a hero pose, before starting to wave her arms around. "Except that's not even close to what the ******** did! He lost his damn mind! Literally just went ******** crazy right there on the battlefield! Said it didn't matter if we died or not, that it was all our own fault!" She said heatedly, clearing having strong feelings about this subject.
"And then! He has the balls! The ******** unbelievable idea to come up to us and try to apologize! Like somehow what he did was forgivable!" She stated, starting to pace, meanwhile her flesh was starting to visibly shift as her power yearned to react to her anger. "He walks up to us and tries to say that everything he did was because he saw his kid die! Like telling us to basically go to hell was totally okay so long as he made sure to compare us to his daughter! ******** that stupid a*****e!"
She wasn't aware of how loud she was, nor that she started cursing up a storm in front of whom she considered her mother. She was just that livid. She may not have been a hundred percent accurate with the things she said, but they were accurate enough to get her point across. She measured Acel, and found him wanting. Very, very wanting.

What an interesting group of people he seemed to find himself caught up in. Akio watched as the woman named Katya squeezed her children in a warm hug and brought everyone inside for cookies and to spill tea. Basically, his two favorite pastimes, aside from programing bots to do unnecessary, well, anything. So, actually, Akio was quite attentive to the conversation, or as much as he could be after a good four hours of sleep, five cigarettes, four extra strength Advils, a cup of coffee, and a persistent headache. Still, he managed to pick up on the bits and pieces of the conversation that actually mattered. For instance, what exactly was going on with Acel. From the sounds of it, they had an encounter with the Angel, or whatever it decided to call itself. And from how traumatized the little boy looked, it probably got at least him, or both of them, killed. Akio folded his arms and leaned on the counter, ignoring the cookies for the time being. He didn’t want an allergic reaction, no matter how minor, to cloud his judgement any further. Perhaps later.
Corrinne then spoke up, giving less than useful information to the group. But he really couldn’t blame her, considering she had all but vanished for the past two-ish days, or however long it had been. Though he couldn’t help but smirk a little at the idea that she still knew very little about him, aside from his barely remembered name. After all, he did think her name was Kory for a split second there. “I am an enigma to all.” He said, his amused voice tangling with his accent in an interesting way.
Then it wasn’t long before Thre launched into her story about what happened, giving a lot more detail about what happened on their mission with the blond farm boy. The second the girl opened her mouth, Akio almost lost his s**t. He managed to stifle the laughter just barely, a light snicker escaping him, but overall managed to hear the girl out. Seriously though? Pathetic waste of space? That was actually kinda hilarious. Reminded him of what he said to Acel the first time they had ever met. But the amusement slowly turned into strong curiosity and concern for everyone when she said he went completely berserk on the battlefield. He remembered what it was like being out on the field with Acel, and how the entire time he was worried about whether or not he would turn on Sarah and him when they were fighting. Honestly, for a while he didn’t know what to think, but now he had a pretty good idea of what actually was going on, or close to an idea.
He was lucky that he had a therapist, so he knew a few things about trauma and what it does to the brain. Akio wasn’t sure exactly how accurate his guess was, but it was the closest thing that he could think of. “Sounds like you two had an encounter with the Angel? Or whatever it calls itself.” Akio began, pointing his question first towards Thre, who seemed to be the most conscious of what it was that had happened. That wasn’t to say that Ilya couldn’t comprehend what he was about to say, but he was younger and these concepts were sometimes hard to grasp. “I went on a mission with him to Chicago yesterday, and something similar happened to me. It was interesting to say the least, and also kind of terrifying. My theory is that he has a fairly strong case of Split Personality Disorder.”
When Ilya looked at Akio with a confused look, Akio sighed and explained, not entirely irritated that Ilya didn’t know and at least somewhat glad that he could get into detail about it. “Literally exactly how it sounds.” He said, pushing himself off the counter, shrugging his shoulders a little bit and going for one of the cookies. “When someone goes through a severely traumatic experience, sometimes the brain will fragment itself to keep itself protected.” When he said this, Akio broke the cookie in half, adding emphasis to his words. “It creates a shield, if it were, of a whole other being that lives inside your brain. Usually, this is a manifestation of what you want to be or sometimes the worst parts of you. I think that’s what the Angel is, though part of me things that’s not entirely the case.” Once again, Akio shrugged, taking a bite out of the cookie before saying anything else.
He took the moment to collect his thoughts. The cookie was pleasing to the tongue, and he was rather pleased that he could finally try some with little to no effects other than that strange tickling feeling in his throat that now bubbled up. Hmm. How strange. Akio let out a short cough to clear his throat before speaking again. “The theory doesn't match perfectly, and there’s still a lot of variables to consider but… “Akio shrugged, putting the cookie down and deciding the unpleasant feeling wasn’t worth the delicious taste. “Either way, the dude is crazy and I’d suggest you limit interactions with him until I figure out what he is, exactly.” And if it was actually true that he killed his own daughter. Those words were still echoing in his mind, and if it were true, he’d rather keep these kids as far away from Acel as possible. And for that matter, everyone should probably keep their distance. It was too late for Ilya, Thre, him, Dal’Mori, and Sarah, but at least Corrinne could heed the warning.
The ‘Angel’ fed off fear and despair, actively going out to seek it in other people. It just so happened that in the original group it made itself known in, that was a simple task. Sarah was meak, Acel wallowed in his sorrow after his family died, and Akio for… Well, that was his issues, not something worth getting into at this point in time. Point was that this thing was the epitome of ‘misery loves company.’ Akio thought for a moment, tapping a finger on the counter, unaware of how awkward his silence was. He couldn’t help but think about how Acel couldn’t speak Mandarin, yet suddenly could when the Angel took over. That didn’t align with his theory at all, but he wasn’t going to say that outloud and scare the children more. What also didn’t align with the theory was the sudden pick up of different fighting styles, or the dual voices the man held when he spoke as the Angel. It was almost as if it was actually a whole other being in the man, which was more than slightly terrifying. If that were the case, then he needed severe help, and he wasn’t sure anyone could get him what he needed. Akio frowned, playing with one of his lip piercings in thought. He desperately hoped that wasn’t actually the case, but the more he thought about it, the more he felt like it was a distinct possibility.
Damn it. It was too much to think about, and Akio clearly wasn’t in any position to think too hard. Perhaps another mission would clear his head? Somewhere cold. Very cold. Some place that reminded him so much of home. Looking up, he realized that there was actually a perfect amount of people with him to go on a fairly successful mission. And Corrinne did say she hadn’t gone on a mission before, so it was a good time to show these two kids what a successful mission looked like as well as her what a mission looked like.
Once again, Akio leaned against the counter, resting his head on his hands, this time directing his question towards Katya. “Would you mind me taking your children on a mission? I can send you updates via text messages if that will make you comfortable. Of course you’re welcome to come as well, Corr.. inne. Corrine.” The last bit was directed towards the redhead, finally saying her name for the first time. He almost ******** up her name, clearly having forgotten it for a moment. He almost felt bad, but she did mention that she forgot his name as well, so he felt less like a horrible human being and more like someone who had only talked to this person once before.

Ilya was so glad that everyone else took up the reigns in the conversation. As soon as all eyes were on him, expecting him to tell the story, he very nearly fell apart at the seams. Taking a deep breath and placing a light hand on his chest, he took a moment to collect himself again. Corrinne spoke up about not having gone on a mission yet, and barely having spoken to Acel at all. Ilya made a face, unsure how he was supposed to feel about that. He still didn’t know how big the community of Baiters was, or if they even all spoke to each other, but he felt weird knowing that none of the baiters he had met so far were even remotely friends with each other. Unless, Kawa and that one guy with the very long hair were actually friends, that would make sense. They were hanging out together in the Training room.
However, when Corrinne spoke up about Kawa’s family he couldn’t help but be curious. Who did she meet? Was it a tight knit group like his little family was? Who did he take after more? His mama, or his papa? Ilya didn’t know about the family bonds of other people, considering where he had grown up and who raised him, so he was more than a little curious. But, sadly, the conversation shifted away from that and into Corrinne’s experience with missions, or lack thereof. That, once again, amazed him completely. A Baiter who’s not gone on a mission yet? What did she do instead?
Again, the conversation changed, shooting back to what happened on the mission between him, Thre, and Acel. Ilya shuddered, making his way to the cookies so that he could finally have one. He stayed silent, letting Thre go off on her rant about what had happened and why she was bitter about it. She cursed up a storm, too, using a swear word in every sentence that left her mouth. Ilya frowned, giving the teenager a nasty look before muttering ”Thre… Language...” and meandering over to the couch where his mother had planted her rear-end to listen to everyone. The boy nibbled on the cookie, savoring every sweet bite that he had. Nothing beat his mother's cookies, absolutely nothing!
Ilya’s big blue eyes shifted from person to person, watching everyone interact with each other, talking about Acel like they all knew different parts of him. Kawa, though, seemed to be the most informed about it. When the man spoke about this thing called the ‘Angel,’ Ilya nodded vigorously. ”That’s exactly what he called himself! Or… Something like that, at least… ” He chimed in, shivering to think that this man had encountered the same exact thing, but… Seemingly lived to tell the tale. Was he lucky? Or was he just stronger than the man? Ilya couldn’t help but be more than a little curious about it. Still, the more and more Kawa went on, the less he really understood what had happened. So wait, it Wasn’t Actually Acel that had said and did all those things? Or… It was, and he was just, what, crazy? Ilya’s mind spun, clearly not having understood what Kawa had said. Kawa seemed to pick up on this, however, and began to explain what it was using the cookies as a reference. Apparently, the brain would fragment itself to keep itself safe? That was very strange, and he wasn’t sure how that worked, but he listened anyway, doing his best to soak up the information that was being handed to him. He, sadly, wasn’t the most intelligent little boy, though, so he ended up getting lost along the road.
’What the man is saying is that Acel’s brain isn’t correct anymore, and the man is suffering deeper than you can ever imagine. But that he is also dangerous because of it, and that you should probably keep your distance for the time being.’
Ilya looked down at his cookie, slowly chewing the bits that were in his mouth. He thought about the way the man reacted, and how upset he looked when Acel saw the kids next. Perhaps he was going through some things and desperately needed help to fix his fragmented mind? … Ilya needed to talk to Acel again, by any means necessary. Perhaps after this, he’d go off and find him, somehow managing to ditch Thre and Kawa who both would strongly advise against it. ’Ilya, my boy, I strongly advise against this. You saw how the man treated you in the battle. Both you and Thre were tossed aside as if you didn’t matter. And you still want to talk to him?’
Subconsciously, Ilya nodded, taking another slow bite of his cookie. ’Yes, I am. Kawa said it himself, the Angel isn’t exactly him… Maybe if I talk to him, it’ll help some? If he’s hurting because of his kid… Then maybe I can help him. Even a little.’
Gavriil sighed, mentally shaking its head. ’You are too good for this path, my boy. Don’t let that be your downfall.’
About then was when Kawa spoke up about a mission, but asking Katya rather than Ilya. Looking up at the woman, he noticed her pause, the woman milling over the idea in her head. Kawa offered updates on how the mission went, something that Acel didn’t even think about. Katya, the strong woman who raised a child who cared too much about others by herself for the past eleven years, was not someone to take lightly. If she could, she would find a way to ruin whoever slighted her or her family. But right now, she needed to have trust in others to keep her son safe, so she nodded, agreeing to let Ilya and Thre to go on a mission with the Asian man who somehow managed to rationalized Acel’s behavior, without excusing it. ”I expect mission updates at every chance you get. I’ll need to know what region you are in, when you head to the mission area, when you get there, and when you are on your way back.” She said, her voice stirn as any mother should be. Standing up, she walked over to the counter where Akio was still standing and pulled a piece of paper from under a box that still had kitchen supplies in it, writing her number on the small sheet. ”Miss, if you are going with them, take the number as well. If he cannot update me, I expect you to.”
And with that, the woman sat back down, patting her son on his scruffy head. Ilya beamed a little bit, excited to go on another mission. He hoped greatly that it would go well, and he wouldn’t end up dying again. Even still, perhaps it would do him some good to go on this mission before talking to Acel? It would in the very least allow him to think about what he was going to say to the man… Ho, boy, that was going to be difficult. In time, though, he’d have a plan to be able to do just that.

As Corrinne quietly nibbled on the sweet hand-made cookies, she was surprised to see how emotional the young girl grew suddenly when hugged by Katya. Her tears welled up and she gasped, trying to catch her breath, she held the older woman tightly. Since Corrinne didn’t know any better, this looked completely normal to her – for she was still under the mistaken impression that Thre was Ilya’s sister and that this reaction was just from being able to see her mother again after a mission. This made Thre amiable in Corrinne’s eyes so she began to lean comfortably against the wall behind her in between Akio and Katya to watch the children.
However, her relief was instantly interrupted when Thre began to unburden herself to the group about the events involving Acel. In the most animated expression Thre explained how Acel had put her and Ilya in danger and went mad on the battlefield! Corrinne couldn’t believe it, her jaw visibly dropped as she looked from Thre to Ilya. Then as Thre began to pace in anger, Corrinne covered her mouth from shock, “Oh my! How awful.” Corrinne looked around at the other adults to see if they were as disturbed as she was about what had happened. Then Akio quickly picked up the conversation after Thre only to confirm that it was all true!
“Split Personality Disorder?” Corrinne repeated Akio’s words with a quizzical expression. Folding her arms across her waist she nodded in to listen to him more clearly as he went into an analysis of what it could be. “Angel? Couldn’t this also be his AI taking over?” She added to his conversation before he went on to say that he was still trying to figure out what it actually was. But that it would probably be safer for them to keep their distance from Acel for a while. This was still shocking to Corrinne, as Acel was actually one of the people that she had had the most contact with, having comforted him a few times. But she didn’t know about all of this! It truly was a mystery, one that she wasn’t sure she wanted to solve.
Corrinne watched Akio tapping his fingers on the counter, obviously thinking to himself, then playing with one of his piercings. Corrinne half smiled and raised her eyebrows sympathetically, she found these long awkward pauses that the male BAITR’s did quite charming, how sheltered had they been? To do these long awkward pauses in most societies today would make any normal listener impatient. But he suddenly started his conversation again after leaning against a counter and addressing Katya, asking her if she would be all right with him taking her children out on a mission again. Yet again, Corrinne was surprised! The children had just come back from what seemed a very dangerous battle and already he was proposing they leave again.
Then he added that Corrinne may come too, half stumbling over her name in the process. “Wha-” Corrinne put her hands on her hips as she waited to hear what Katya’s answer would be. Thrown again, when their mother agreed that they might go with Akio on a mission, just as long as he kept her informed of their status. “Are you serious? They just risked their lives,” Corrinne gestured to the young ones but before she could argue the idea further Katya had already reached for pen and paper with their information on it to give to Akio and herself. “I can’t believe this,” Corrinne looked down at the carefully written down information then back up at the rest of them and sighed, “Alright, I can’t believe we’re doing this but I promise to look after them.” She stared back at Katya and nodded, “I won’t let them out of my sight.”
When Katya seemed satisfied with this she went to Ilya and patted him on the head lovingly. Corrinne shook her head and looked back at Akio and let out a bewildered, “What did you just get me into?”

Threigze Fionsi Bez truda, ne vitashish i ribku iz pruda.
Slowly clearing the haze of anger that clouded her mind, the young alien girl looked at her dearest of friends and lifted an eyebrow, almost as if daring him to make her watch her mouth. She was angry, and expletives were simply how she expressed that. Well, expletives were how she generally expressed herself, but that was neither here nor there. Right now was certainly not the time to be correcting her about her language. Hell, even Katya seemed to understand this, for she didn't bring it up! That, or she felt Ilya got to it first, and decided that would be enough for right now. Either way, the end result would be the same, she would continue to curse up a storm when and how she saw fit.
It was simply how she did things.
Shortly after Ilya mentioned her language, the wretched beast of a woman who tried to latch onto Akio showed concern for them. Summer let loose a huff of annoyance at the manner in which the young lady thought about her, which Thre ignored. Naturally. However, she was not callous enough to ignore the fact that this woman, whom she'd never met to this date, showed compassion for herself and her little brother. Even though she had to know what Thre currently thought of her, given she made no secret of it. It wasn't enough to make the young lady like her, but it was enough to tip the scale towards indifferent until the next thing happened.
As she came to the conclusion she would at least give the woman a chance (though not before scooting a little closer to Akio, staking her claim), the man of her current day dreams started talking. He apparently had a run in with this monster that ran around with the face of an 'innocent Baiter who mourned the loss of his kid'. Immediately, she felt a protective surge, the same thing she felt for Sarah. She wanted to keep him away from Acel. He was a disaster waiting to happen. She just knew it.
While Akio was explaining what he thought might be what was going on with Acel, her eyebrows scrunched together in what one could easily guess was confusion. Actually, it was her trying to process the information. On its surface, it looked like a very convincing idea. Like, perhaps, Acel wasn't a monster, but someone who had legitimately suffered enough to break. While it still made him weak and pathetic, it would make him just a little more relatable for the girl, who had herself suffered greatly in her life.
There were a few issues however.
The extreme shift in personality was easy enough to explain away, sure, but what about the fact that his body changed? Not just changed, but peeled away like a gross glove. Sure, she was able to change her own body, but that was because of her own genetic makeup. Did that mean this man was some kind of alien then? And what about his voice? It took a special set of vocal cords to pull off that dual voice thing he was doing. That, or a special kind of training. She had heard rumors that there was once a group of monks somewhere that trained themselves to be able to do this. Ancient group of monks though, so that seemed very farfetched.
She would bring these points up to Akio later if she found a chance, see if maybe he could explain away those things. He was super smart after all, coming to such an advanced, admittedly guessed at, conclusion about that Acel b*****d after just one mission with the guy. God, was there nothing this guy couldn't do? He was sexy as hell, held himself with a confidence few people could even reach, had amazing eyes, and in addition to knowing how most electronics worked, the man had an active knowledge of the human mind.
She was practically drooling as she stared up at him, an admittedly creepy smile on her face, her eyes shining with admiration as she fell a little more in love with him right then and there, even as she ignored whatever it was that Corrinne was saying.
Summer sighed in exasperation. Thre ignored her again.
Silence reigned in the room for a good while, though she was a little too enamored to notice it was apparently quite awkward. When, quite suddenly, the object of her current attention announced he would like to go on a mission with them. He even offered to keep Katya updated on what was going on, something the woman seemed to greatly appreciate.
Before she could honestly reply, Corrinne started almost berating Akio for even asking to take them out on a mission, even after Katya agreed. This caused Thre to turn to look at her incredulously, a frown firmly set on her face. Who did this woman think she was? To just assume that she had any right to attempt to speak on their behalf? The indifference from before once more shifted towards dislike, though this time it was for a very reasonable reason.
Thre couldn't help herself. She wasn't entirely sure why, probably how often she'd held her tongue today, but truth be told, it was probably her jealousy speaking. "Don't worry. If you're scared, I'll protect you." It certainly wasn't a nice statement, but it wasn't said in a mean way. More of a mocking way. Like she was taking a jab at the fact that she'd seen combat on the scale Thre had. She walked over and gave Katya another hug, planting a quick kiss on her cheek before turning towards the door, deciding to head towards the mission room right away.
She'd be lying if she said she wasn't excited.

Dal'Mori Cestrol Menne
As he was walking away from Kawaguchi, the man with whom he'd had one hell of a successful mission with, his mind was a flurry of thoughts. The best way to describe it would be to say that someone had unleashed gale force winds, before spinning them into a twister within the confines of his mind. Normally, after a good workout like that, and there was no denying that that was what that fight had been, his mind was calm. It had been taxing, no doubt, but already he was feeling refreshed, the healing his body was now capable of reaching once more impressing him with its capabilities. However, despite this fact his mind was a mess of thoughts, which was probably the biggest reason he wanted to rush off into another mission already.
That and fighting something to the death was a great way to forget. There was nothing but himself, them and the life or death battle. Anything else was background noise to be ignored.
Obviously, the current focus of the majority of his thoughts was the shorter male he'd just been on a mission with. He simply couldn't fathom how in such a short period of time he'd come to respect someone like that. Sure, there was plenty of grounds for it, otherwise the respect wouldn't have come about, but it just came so fast. Between the amazing challenge he presented with that magic, the way he actually spoke to the kid in such a kind way despite his first impression, and the fight they'd just been through, Dal'Mori would be willing to fight for Kawaguchi. Not like a subservient soldier, never like that, he highly doubted anyone would have that over him, but certainly like an honest partner.
It was as surprising as it was unwanted.
He couldn't afford to make connections like that, no matter how small and tenuous they ultimately turned out to be. He had a goal. A clear cut, hopelessly out of reach goal. He had to be willing to give up everything, literally everything for this goal. Wiping out an entire species of things that could spawn themselves from what he could only assume was nothing would never be an easy task, and that was without taking into consideration that as he was right now he could still only barely battle those considered the lowest tier of enemy as he was.
Taking that fact into consideration, the path he laid out before himself was an insurmountable mountain, paved with the hardest of hardships, grueling circumstances, and nothing but the worst of experiences. A flash of golden eyes raced through his memory, reminding him of his humiliating defeat just yesterday.
Yet, for reasons he simply could not comprehend, his mind was finding reasons to make whatever he found between himself and Kawaguchi work. More than that, it was finding a means of making him go and try to find something similar with Acel, Sarah, and perhaps even that Corrinne woman should she remove that idiotic view about family hurting her. It was trying to grasp desperately at the stained threadbare connection that had formed between himself and those people, like it was falling from a cliff and they were his only means of salvation from a deep black void. Almost as if his mind thought these people would be the means of healing the cracks that had formed within his mind.
He was no longer heading in any one direction, his mind too caught up in this whirlwind of thoughts.
Speaking of other people, his mind shifted to Acel. The man who had dishonored a sacred act from his village, however inadvertently, to force honesty from the seasoned warrior. This was easy enough to get around, for if he simply did not speak, he would not be lying. He ignored the little part of his mind that spoke of the fact that that would still be considered a lie of omission, but seeing that Acel had asked for honesty, and not for Dal'Mori to always respond to him, the tall man didn't care. It was only fair, after all, as the man had been rather underhanded with what he had done.
However, truth be told, he couldn't bring himself to be that aggravated by that fact as he'd been when it first happened. Why? Simple. With how things worked out with Kawaguchi, and subsequently his decision to try this strange tactic on the blonde male, he figured it would be easier to wipe the slate as clean as he could. After all, it would be far easier to convince someone to be friendly with him if he was nice, and not angry.
Turning around a corner, he came upon the sight of the very object of his thoughts. He was deep in conversation with Sarah about something, and Dal'Mori, being so absurdly practiced in reading people by the way they held themselves, he could tell something big had happened. What it was, he wouldn't even hazard a guess, but he promptly walked off before either of them could notice him. While he was more than willing to attempt to befriend them to reach his own goals, he was not at all ready to deal with whatever baggage was going on right there.
He would just hope to catch them at a better time. Maybe ask them onto a mission with him, so he could get a better feel for how they fought. He decimated Acel, and his core in their fight, after giving him a few friendly pointers. The same could be said for his fight with Sarah, minus the friendly tips, which he didn't offer any for. Though, admittedly, this fact made both of them worthwhile candidates for him to attempt to recruit into his circle.
Acel was rough, unformed clay. Sarah was hard, unshaped marble. The shape and form were there; it just took a strong, steady guiding hand to bring it forth. They would make amazing fighters in due time, but for now they were still a little green. Acel had strong potential as a front line fighter, where Sarah was incredible at taking a beating. While that may not seem like a desirable trait, the truth was it made her an optimal pick for a defender. Toss in Kawaguchi who was so damned fast, putting him in either the vanguard or support role, and you had yourself one damn good team. Having all of them around him would make for one unstoppable force.
There it was doing it again! His mind was coming up with reason after reason as to why he should cling to these people! He growled in frustration. That was not the plan. The plan was simple, easy. Only a fool could muck it up. Step one, get strong. Step two, get minions. Step three, begin the long and arduous task of destroying every, single, last beastie that walked this planet! Ensure that no one else ever faced the destruction of everything they loved! Remove the pain of that kind of loss from this world!
So why couldn't he let go? Why, even now, even after recognizing what his mind was doing, did he hold so stringently? Why were these people so present in his mind?! These people who he had only just met! Of them, only one he had ever fought with, ever stood beside! Even that was just once! One single time! One single moment!
'Life is made of single moment's little brother.'
The voice of his oldest and dearest friend slipped into his mind causing him to start. The endearing name she called him despite their lack of blood relations cause him to smile a very slight smile, so slight in fact that even staring dead on at him you would hardly be able to recognize that his lips had turned up. She was a whole three days older than he was, and they had basically grown up together, but she always insisted on calling him that. She knew he both loved and hated it, which was exactly why she did it.
She was every bit that kind of person, a person who lived in the moment, who thought the past was exactly that, the past. That the single moments were what matters. Those single instances were what made people people, what made life life. He never truly understood it, feeling almost the exact opposite. Life was a long and continuous sting. People connected over time, never in a single moment.
This was exactly why he was so confused right now. Even more so when one took into consideration the fact he never wanted these connections, which was why he had planned on limiting interactions between himself and people. And yet, here he was, a mere single instant later, considering empowering those connections, making them stronger, even if it was with selfish reasons in mind.
He groaned as he felt a small headache start to form in the back of his mind.
He was not one for deep thought like this. He let his actions speak for himself, and rarely spent a lot of time thinking about them, more often than not following his gut. With that thought in mind, it was high time he stopped thinking about it, he had plans now, no matter how confused they made him, they made sense. Which, admittedly, was rather confusing as well, but he never claimed to be a genius.
So, he moved over to the nearest wall, to make sure he was as out of the way as possible, slipped to the floor, moving into the position he was most comfortable dealing with, he began to meditate. Breathing slowly. In and out. In and out. In through the nose, out through the mouth. The tension in his body slowly began to seep out as he started putting the thoughts away, some he forced to the back of his mind, hopefully to be forgotten, others he placed where he needed them to go, clearing his mind of their clutter. The whole process took several minutes, but when he was finished he felt lighter, and no longer worried about his choices.
He would follow through, and deal with whatever consequences that would come with them. His gut told him this was the best course of action, and he'd never ignored it before, and thus would not start now.
He took one final deep breath and opened his eyes, significantly calmer now than he'd been however long ago it had been since his mission with Kawaguchi. He lifted his eyebrow at the glances that kept being sent his way, wondering why this seemed like an out of place occurrence. Didn't everyone meditate? If not, they really should pick it up. It was an incredible way to calm the mind and relax the body.
Shrugging he rose to his feet and looked for the nearest directional... Thing. He had no idea what they were, guessing they were words of some sort, but having no means of understanding them. He found the ones that looked familiar, meaning they pointed towards the training room. He followed them easily enough, his body easily moving through the crowd like a ghost, the meditation calming him down a great deal. Once he reached the very familiar room that, just barely a few hours ago, he'd been inside with Kawaguchi, he immediately set off towards the mission room, using the training room as a landmark of sorts.
His memory served him well, and a few short moments later he was walking into the mission’s office once more. He really needed to find a means of figuring out what those words were, he didn't like the idea that if he wasn't paying enough attention he could get lost.
He walked up to the nearest desk, flashed his badge and asked for a mission. The lad behind the counter was interesting looking. Half of his hair was missing, but not due to an injury or anything, it looked like it was purposely shaved off like that. His nose was slightly crooked, and he had a good deal of facial hair. However, the most interesting thing about the guy was that his eye, the one on the side of his head that actually had hair, was covered with some kind of black patch that seemed to be embedded in his face, the skin surrounding it was scarred deeply.
Apparently this man had dealt with something dangerous, and only barely lived to tell the tale.
"SIR!" The loud voice of the man in front of him brought him forth from his musings, causing Dal'Mori to cringe the smallest of amounts due to his own inattentiveness, apparently the man had been trying to get his attention for a while now. The man however took in in stride, continuing on to describe his mission. "We have a mission for the Colorado Dustbowl. A couple Baiters have been coming back stating that they have been seeing some kind of anomaly in the area, that keeps scaring A.I.s towards the farmlands of the people who live there. The mission is to go and investigate this anomaly, and if possible rid the area of it. Do you accept?"
The warrior nodded, taking the necessary paperwork and headed off with a quiet thank you. He may not care about the man, but he was doing his job, and as such helping him out, so it was only kind to show the man some respect. No matter how empty it really was.
Within minutes he was at the very familiar portal room, handing over the paperwork he was given, before walking right up onto the device that would rip him into tiny pieces, and then deliver him where he needed to go. His brain hurt when he tried to think about how that particular magic worked, and simultaneously wished he had a portable one. 'How cool would it be to teleport around the battlefield?' The little kid in Dal'Mori couldn't help but think.
As that thought passed his mind, and with a bright light, he was gone.

Katya thankfully accepted, sliding him her number so he could note it in his phone. It was only then that he realized that he left his friend hanging, never having texted her back. Letting out and audible oops, he sent her an apology, told her he had to go, then inputted Katya’s number into his contact listing. “Alright, I’ll send you updates as often as I can.” He said, Then shoving his phone in his back pocket and pushing himself off the counter one final time. “We should probably leave. It was nice meeting you, Miss.” He said, giving the woman a slight bow before opening the door once again and grabbed his shoes to put them on. Sadly, the more he thought about it, the more his theory didn’t work, and that really bothered him. But… The possibility that something else was living in that man was too much to say in front of this single mother of two. He wasn’t a father, nor did he ever plan on having kids, but he could understand a mother's worry, especially knowing his mother. All she ever did was worry for him, not that she had no reason to, and Akio figured that the best way to make sure that this mother didn’t have to suffer at the hands of knowledge that wasn’t fully formed just yet. While she deserved to know, he didn’t want her going out and forming a lynch mob against the guy. Not yet, at least.
Corrinne seemed rather… Upset, to say the least, about him taking the kids on a mission just after they god back, and likely died, from one with Acel. But, in his way of thinking, he figured that it would be best for them to actually go on a mission that wasn’t going to end tragically. That… And there were a few things he wanted to say that he felt like he couldn’t in front of Katya. When she finally agreed with the mission though, he sent her a cheeky smirk and opened the door. “Nothing. Don’t worry about it.” He said, holding the door open for everyone to walk through. Once everyone was out the door and on their way, Akio took a deep breath and asked Thre a couple important questions. “So… Was his skin also peeling, and his voice almost... “ Akio paused, trying to figure out the best way to say it in English. It was quite obvious that it wasn’t his mother tongue at this point. “Doubled over, I guess?” He said, hoping she got what he meant by that. When she confirmed, Akio nodded, crossing his arms. “I don’t think his AI is taking him over. We’ve all seen his AI, he’s not exactly shy about using it. I don’t think it’s impossible that it’s another one, though. But I don’t know how that could work, or if that’s actually possible.” Akio paused again, “I didn’t want to say that in front of your mother.”
Everyone was on their way to their mission though, and he had no room to be upset. Really, he kind of wanted to go on another mission with Acel, or at least sit down with the man and talk to him over dinner. After, of course, discussing with him about the use of his first name. That wasn’t chill, not anytime soon. There really was a lot to think about as far as the man went, though, and he would like to discuss that with him.
But for now, he wanted to focus on the mission they were about to go on. He wasn’t sure what was going to happen during the mission, but he was damn sure that it was going to be interesting. All of the missions he had gone on were something new to discover, a new place that he had never even read about, or something that he never would have guessed he would have to do. All of which he found absolutely amazing. In the first one, he had to fight a human who had sided with the AI’s and basically had to rebuild a shield from the ground up, and on the other he fought on a mission with a man who previously hated his guts in an area that was absolutely fascinating. What could possibly happen this time? Oh, he was so excited that he could barely contain it. And, seeing as he was the most experienced of the bunch, he was going to lead the way, ensuring that he was going to be able to take in as much as he could.
It didn’t take long to get to the main facilities once again, the conversion idle for the most part, Thre still asking almost too many questions for him to answer, and Ilya turning to question Corrinne about who she was and where she was from. The boy was naturally curious, and he seemed to be driven by kindness and love more than anything else. How naive and adorable. Akio could probably bet money on the fact that he became a Baiter for someone else. Likely either his mother or Thre, one of those two. Or his father? He hadn’t seen the man, but he assumed he existed. Somewhere. Probably.
But anyway, they finally made it to the main facilities and into the offices where they distributed the missions for the Baiters to take. Gigi, as per usual, was sitting at her desk doing exactly what she did every day. Walking up to the dark haired woman, he kindly smiled and asked what missions were available.
The woman already looked done with her day, but proceeded to hand him a list anyway. “There are a few to choose from. Polar Gates, Hexanium Plant, Last Chance, and Kamchatka Region.” The woman paused, looking up at Akio for the first time. “Wait, aren’t you the guy who fixed the shield in Chicago?” she asked, cocking her head.
“Ah… Yes, I was the one who did that.” Akio said, unsure as to why she was asking.
“Oh, perfect. Take this mission, then.” She said, pulling up the files for the Polar Gates and showing them to Akio. “There’s a terminal up in the gates that holds a lot of information that we sort of need. We think a group of AI is protecting it or trying to extract the information from it. And do be careful, we’ve sent a number of groups up there already and none of them have returned. At all.”
Akio nodded slowly, thinking over the idea of hacking into a terminal up in the Polar mother ******** Gates. However, the idea that there was also groups of Baiters that has straight up gone mission up there was mildly concerning. Was it a good idea to take a couple children and a noob to a mission like this? Probably not. Was he going to do it anyway? Yup. “Alright. Sounds good to me.” He said. Just call him the irresponsible uncle.
“Alright.” Gigi said, plugging in the details of the mission into a briefing, and logging into the computer who it was who was going on the mission. “I’ll just need to see your Baiter Badges so I can log you all in and you guys will be good to go.”
Rummaging through his pockets for a moment, Akio pulled out his wallet, pulling out his card and handing it to the woman. Again, his card was a very pretty view of a running river surrounded by stunning cherry blossom tree. Quickly, she took it and scanned it in, then handed it back. Gigi then looked towards everyone else, expecting someone else to give her their badge. Meanwhile, Akio placed his badge back into his wallet, which he then placed into his back pocket. Then, as he waited, pulled his phone back out to check his messages, reading whatever it was that his friend sent him, waiting for everyone to do their business.

Ilya was fine accepting the mission, and completely fine with Kawa texting his mom at any chance he got. What he was worried about was more of the outcome of the battle. True, he had a, hopefully, more dependable than the original composition. True… He had the utmost faith in Acel when they first met so he was somewhat wary of everyone here, but from the sound of things no one even knew what it was that was going on with Acel and were not the same. And at least Corrinne sounded like an absolutely lovely human being. When Kawa even brought up the mission she was opposed, simply because they had already risked their lives in their first mission. To which, Ilya could only c**k his head and ask ”But isn’t that what a Baiter is supposed to do? Risk their lives every day?” He asked before everyone finally agreed to the mission and were on their way out the door.
Before they were finally out the door, though, Ilya had to say goodbye to his mother. Sure, they would see each other again soon and there was no need to be upset, but he couldn’t help but the little boy couldn’t help but tear up when he said his goodbyes. He gave the woman a long hug, holding her tight and with as much love as he could place in his hug. Katya was everything to Ilya, and he would fight everyone and anything that came near the woman. It was of the utmost importance to him that she lived and continued to be near him. To have his world vanish from him… That was inconceivable.
Finally, they were on their way out and Ilya was wiping away his tears, on his way to his second mission ever. This time, he hoped, he wouldn’t die. Or see anyone die, actually. That would be the best thing.
But then Kawa spoke again, asking Thre if Acel’s skin was basically falling off and if he had that weird dual voice thing going on. Ilya had to answer as well, adding his own comment to whatever Thre responded with. ”Called us ‘fools’ a lot, too...” He said, sounding more than a little upset by this. He wasn’t a fool… Young and probably naive… But not a fool. Rude.
Ilya listened to what the man had to say, thinking about it. It was actually somewhat concerning that no one actually knew what it was or where the issues actually came from. Ilya shook a little, not wanting to encounter it again. But… If he were to help, then he would have to encounter the man again. Ilya was in a predicament, having to think about what he was going to do next. And he had no one to talk to about it! His mind was spinning, and there was nothing ce could do to really stop it.
Soon, though, they were on their way to the main facilities so they could pick up their new mission. Of course, on the way there it was calm and collected, Thre doing her thing, Akio doing his thing, and Ilya questioning Corrinne as much as he could. Actually, he quite liked her. He thought she was very kind and was glad to hear that she was on his side. Corrine didn’t do the same thing that Acel did, underestimating Ilya to the point where he didn’t even believe that he was a Baiter. Or, even, had the capability of doing so! Corrinne, though, she just wanted to make sure they were alright. It was a far cry better than simply not believing them, Ilya believed. He asked the woman questions like ‘where are you from?’ and ‘what did you do before this?’ Ilya wanted to know as much about her as possible, asking questions that even went into who she was, what she liked, and if she had any goals for the future. Whatever answers he got, he would bounce right to the next one, going from one question to another so that he could soak up as much information as possible before they reached the main station.
When they did, he had to stop, though he knew he would be able to get more answers as soon as they were to start moving again. They just had to pick up the mission and go forth from there… Luckily, it seemed that Kawa had taken the reigns and picked up the mission for the group, not making them do any of the brunt work. It was to a place called the ‘Polar Gates.’ Ilya had no idea where that was, but it sounded cold as all hell, which he was totally okay with. All Ilya had to do was show his Baiter badge, a pure white card flecked with black streaks, which he pulled out of one of his pockets and showed it to the woman at the desk. It only took a moment, then the woman handed it back and he was ready to go. All was left was Corrinne and Thre and they could be off! He was so excited that he could barely contain himself. Whatever was going to happen, it sounded like it could be a lot of fun. Though, he did have to admit he was a little worried to hear that no one had come back from the mission yet. He hoped that they were at least okay.

Corrinne caught the little snide remark from Thre before she went to kiss Katya on the cheek and head for the door. Corrinne didn’t know whether to be angry or laugh from this comment, so instead she cocked an eyebrow and smiled as she watched the small subtle movements of the young girl. Smiling to the others, she followed Akio out the door and waved to Katya warmly.
“I’ll try not to,” She answered Akio as they walked out the door and into the hallway. “I have to grab a few things from my room, I’ll meet you guys in the mission room.” Just as she was about to leave Akio stopped her to let her know about the Baiter Badges and that she should probably pick hers up before meeting them. She agreed and nodded to the others with a gentle wave.
On her way back to her room she was lost in thought about the upcoming mission. The group seemed to be a very balanced group; it was almost like a little family of four. The adults could pick anything that the children could not do, up. She just hoped that she could be strong enough for them.
Before she could reach her room she heard the sound of someone knocking on a door ahead of her. Looking up she realized it was John Bishop knocking at her door, “John,” She spoke affectionately, this caught him by surprise and he turned around nervously.
“Oh Corrinne, I thought you were, never mind – how have you been?” John was his usual nervous, timid self. He adjusted his glasses and rubbed the back of his neck as he waited for her to reach her door.
“Fine,”
“How is your Uncle?”
“He’s fine too, thank you for asking.” Corrinne unlocked her door as she chatted to John and motioned for him to follow her in. “How are you,” She asked continuing the polite beginning of their conversation as she began to rummage through her clothes to find her mission outfit.
“Oh I’m fine, I was just worried about you? I didn’t hear from you once you got back and -,”
“Oh, I’m sorry John, I actually just got back.” She cut him off in that comfortable manner one does after knowing someone for a long amount of time. “You don’t mind if I change do you, I’m supposed to be heading over to the mission room – oh and I’m supposed to get a Baiter Badge too.” Taking her clothes with her into the bathroom, she left the door open just a crack so that the two could continue talking to each other.
“Your going on a mission? Already?” John looked around at her carefully arranged things.
“Already? Do you realize that I’ve been here almost a week and still haven’t gone out on a mission.” She laughed from the bathroom, slipping on her battle suit.
“Yeah but that’s because, well, things got in the way. Plus you can never be too prepared.” John rubbed his hands nervously at the thought of Corrinne being out on an actual battlefield, he didn’t mind so much when she was in the tournament because it was in a controlled environment. But out in the real world, she could get seriously hurt.
“I think I’m prepared enough John,” Corrinne peaked her head out from the bathroom and asked, “Could you zip me up, please.” She turned her back to him and leaned her head forward so that he could zip up the back of her suit for her. He stopped wringing his hands to carefully zip the suit up. “Thank you,” She smiled up at him before attaching her utility belt to her waist. Checking that it had everything that she needed, medical supplies, precautious weapons like throwing stars, and even some smoke bombs.
Everything seemed to be in order till she could sense the strange sensation of irritation from the corner of her room again. The reaper staff stood silently against the wall. Her eyes narrowed, as she looked it over. It had been a while since she had touched it. And she knew once she did again, she would be all in again. No quiet days with her uncle or John, all carnage and malice and – she stopped herself. ‘Stop thinking like that,’ She thought to herself as she walked over and picked it up gently, rubbing her fingers over the hard surface. Instantly it started to glow.
“That’s strange,” John peered over her shoulder at the Bo staff.
“What is?” Corrinne spoke absently.
“The staff, it’s glowing.” He adjusted his glasses again as the light from the staff reflected off of his lenses.
“Is it, I’ve seen AI weapons do stranger things.” Corrinne spun the staff out of habit and finished once it fell to her side, the glow quietly subsiding once it was back in its rightful position beside her.
“Interesting,” Was all John could say marveling at the reaper staff.
“Come on John, why don’t you come with me to get my Baiter Badge.” She took her keys out of her utility belt and headed to the door.
“Oh yes, I would be glad to!” He followed her out and the two caught up while she locked her apartment door and headed over to find the badge-maker.
John had worked in Baiter Headquarters for years so he knew exactly where Corrinne needed to go. Once they were there Quan Yuen waved first to John Bishop, recognizing him right off.
“John, it’s been a while, how’s work been in core development?” Quan Yuen asked cordially, nodding to Corrinne to acknowledge her.
“Oh, you know, tedious – but someone’s got to do it. I never get to see my work in action,” He gazed down at Corrinne and her staff.
“And who is this?” Quan Yuen smiled down at Corrinne and she returned his expression.
“Corrinne Esperon, she’s a new Baiter, here for her Baiter badge.” John continued to talk for Corrinne.
“Pleasure to meet you sir,” Corrinne stuck out her hand and Quan took it and gripped it firmly.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you Corrinne, well let’s get you started, and may I have a few strands of your hair?”
“My hair?” Corrinne repeated.
“Yes, all part of the procedure.” He nodded and explained the significance of the hair and how the badges worked.
Once Corrinne understood clearly she reached up and ran her fingers through her coppery red hair, a few strands fell away and she let Quan take them from her. He looked them over and placed them down onto a black card covered by a small box. She waited and watched as the card began to glow bright red. John leaned in to watch the process and Corrinne’s eyes grew wider from excitement. Slowly, the image of an Elder tree appeared over mossy rocks with a misty background. Corrinne’s information appeared slowly across the card and Quan Yuen picked it up.
“What’s that?” John questioned still studying the card in Quan Yuen’s hand.
“It’s an Elder tree,” Corrinne spoke softly taking the card offered to her, “It’s a sacred tree, worshiped by the Celts.” She smiled and looked longingly at the mossy rocks, how it reminded her of the holidays her mother used to take her on. “Elder, it means: Kindler of fire,” Her eyes started to glow like the reaper staff, John and Quan Yuen moved away from her suddenly.
“What? What is it?” She looked up at them the light suddenly leaving her eyes.
“Uh – your eyes?” John spoke first.
“They were glowing?” Quan Yuen followed.
“They were,” She looked around for a reflective object, landing on a metallic surface of some equipment but when she looked at herself, her eyes appeared the same as they always had.
“How strange, how did you know all that information on the Elder tree?” John followed her.
“I – I don’t know, it was just there in my mind … suddenly.” She studied her eyes for a moment longer before looking down at the reaper staff in her hand. “I don’t know.”
Quan Yuen and John looked at each other before John decided it was probably time for Corrinne to return to her mission. John and Corrinne said their goodbyes to Quan Yuen and thanked him.
“No trouble, no trouble, come visit me when you can John.” Quan Yuen said to John and waved to Corrinne, “And good luck on your mission, Corrinne.”
Corrinne bowed to him before studying her badge more thoroughly. John walked her in the direction of the mission room and chatted to her about what had just happened, though he could get little out of her for she hardly knew herself. Giving her a gentle hug, he left her in view of her group.
She managed to reach them in time while Akio was setting up the mission. Ilya started to bombard her with questions just as soon as she joined them.
“Oh, where I’m from? Paris – Ville de lumiére et d’amour.” Corrinne garnished the end of her sentence with her native language. “And what did I do before this? Little things here and there for Paris Headquarters, I’m quite good with technology, my mother was a scientist, till I lost her when I was about – your age.” Her eyes drifted for a moment as she thought about her mother but she quickly returned her attention to Ilya, “Not that you should worry about that, your mother is very protected here at main headquarters.” She smiled down at him reassuringly till she heard Akio and the woman at the front desk talking about the Baiter badges.
Corrinne waited while Ilya handed the woman his badge, then Corrinne handed the woman hers. Once returned to her, she looked over it again; it was strange that the image was directly connected to your subconscious. Corrinne continued to talk to Ilya while they waited for Thre to find her badge. “Goals? I can’t say I’ve had any real goals for a while, I’ve just been trying to get by recently.” She smiled down at him and leaned on her reaper staff, feeling strangely comforted that it was by her side again.

Rachel Caldwell
As two being materialized in the teleportation room in BAITR HQ they had very different reactions. The gray haired girl was grinning ear to ear while the raven haired girl look shaken and frazzled. The first let out a whoop and pumped her fist in the air. "Man, that is always such a rush!" She turned to her friend who's eyes had shrunk to points and still looked dazed and confused. "Fun huh?"
"F-fun?...That's...not exactly the word I wouldn't use for that... eh heh heh..." Rachel's nervous laugh said it all. She ha no idea what had just happened, but she knew she didn't like it. And it certainly was not fun, nor would it probably ever be. Finally feeling safe to move Rachel relaxed eve so slightly, just in time dir Daniel to grab her by the hand and drag her along again. The girl had an iron grip, and being taller than Rachel the brunette was nearly tripping just to keep up, it was more being dragged than followed. Again she was led through strange buildings and rooms she didn't recognize, all filled with more people than she had ever seen in he life. It made Rachel a little uneasy to be surrounded by so many people. It made her want to close herself off even more and retreat to a quiet place and hide. But the iron grip of Daniel kept her moving through the compound towards who knew where she was being taken. All the while Daniel regained her abou the dangerous mission she had just been on and how she had destroyed a couple A.I. on the trip. "And then POW! Right in the kisser! He never saw what hit him. Ope, but enough about that, it looks like we're here!"
Here turned out to be the office of an older gentleman with dark meat hair and a kind smile on his face. As the noisy pair entered his work space the man looked up from what he was doing and his warm smile grew a little bit bigger. He put down what he was working on as he spoke to them. "Good afternoon ladies. Is there anything I can do for you today?" he asked sounding absolutely sincere. Daniel pulled Rachel all he way up to his desk before finally letting go of her hand. She then placed an elbow on the desk and saluted the old man with a two finger salute.
"Hiya Quan. This little lady here just finished her H.A.L.F. procedure and needs her baiter card. I figured I'd help her find yah." Daniel flashed Quan Yuen a winning smile before turning and motioning for Rachel to come closer.
"Ah, excellent. It is good to see so many new baiters coming grouch as of late. And what might your name be my dear? Quan asked as the timid girl stepped forward. Rachel stood there awkwardly, not able to look at the man for more than a second before averting her gaze to the floor or something on his desk. When she finally spoke her voice was quiet. "M-my name is Rachel sir...Rachel Caldwell. I was told, in, that I needed to come see you for an ID card." Rachel ring her hands together nervously as she spoke. Wish just kept smiling at her. "It is delightful to meet you Rachel, I am Qua n Yuen, and please feel free to call me Quan. So you are a brand new baiter then huh? We'll let me Ben the first to congratulate you on starting your journey to make this world a safer place. And the next step you must take is going your baiter card. All I will need from you to make it is a few strands of your hair please."
"M-my hair? Oh um... o-okay" Rachel muttered as she nervously played with her hair. Taking a moment to sift through it for a few strands she then plucked a few out with a quiet 'ow'. She then handed them to Quan and watched a show he went to work. The older man took the black strands of hair and delicately lowered them onto a black card gen had pulled from a drawer. There was a small flash as the hair and fused to the card. In this instance Quan Yuen caught a glimpse of the recent tragedies Rachel had suffered and his smile sank into an expression of great sadness. "Oh you poor girl. My sincerest condolences for your recent losses. I am truly sorry." he said as he handed Rachel her new card.
Rachel was not expecting this and the reminder of her loss nearly picked the girl over the edge again. Fighting to keep back the water works Rachel took The card and said with a catch in her throat. "Th-thank you sir." Daniel gave the dark haired girl a confused look but figured she'd ask what Quan meant by that later. Peering over at the new card she noticed the symbol on the front of it. And odd swirl that was three spirals all connecting at the center inside of a circle. "What's that mean?" she asked both genuinely curios and to distract Rachel from whatever bad memories were obviously coming back up to the surface.
Rachel looked down at the card on her hand and noticed the picture on her black card. "Its a trinity. My mother told us it was a symbol of ancestors used to represent the cycle of life; life, death, and rebirth." Remembering her mother wasn't doing much to help her mood but the pain of that loss was a duller one Rachel had leaned to cope with. Daniel seemed interested though as she tried ringer a better look. "Neat! Mine's got a flame on it. I think it's for my fiery personality and will!" she said pumping one of her fists up with the other hand on her bicep. SHE smiled trying to get her new friend to smile but it didn't quite work. Rachel seemed a little lost in thought. But she soon shook herself out of it and gave Daniel a weak smile. What little she knew about the girl seemed to support her claim. Taking the smile as a sign Rachel was okay she then grabbed her hand and pulled her towards the door. "Well thanks doc. We'll be seein' yah around! Rachel let out a small yipe as she was dragged away again. With a quick wave back she simple said. "Thank you sir." As the twongirls left in a hurry Quan waved to them as well. "Goodbye girls. Take care." Once they were out if the door Quan Yuen looked down at his desk and sighed. "It is such a shame we get so many baiters because of such horrible tragedies."
"W-where are we going now?" Rachel called out as she struggled to keep up yet again. She truly did appreciate the help but she worried her arm might get pulled off at the speed and frequency this girl kept dragging her around at. Daniel just grinned back at Rachel before turning her head back to look where she was going. "Only one of my favorite places in this whole humongous compound..."
Daniel dragged Rachel around a few more corners before finally coming to a large set of double doors. Releasing her new friend to grab the handles on the doors she gave her a devilish grin before throwing them open wide. "The armory!" she announced proudly. Rachel's jaw nearly dropped as she saw he room they had come to, it was a massive chamber full of racks and shelves holding more weapons than Rachel had ever imagined existed. Some the the strange objects before her she didn't even know what they did. She was however reluctant to enter a room full with so many death dealing instruments. That is until Daniel got behind her and pushed the timid girl inside. "This is one of the best parts about being a baiter. Choosing your weapon! And boy howdy do you have a selection to choose from. Swords, knives, spears, hand guns, flame throwers, cross bows, missile launchers, chainsaws, you name it! They've got it right here! Look hard enough and I bet you could even find sword-chucks or exploding sheep or anything else you could imagine!"
Rachel's head began to spin, she wasn't a fighter, not really. That H.A.L.F. procedure was the first time in her entire life she had to fight. How couldn't she even begin to know what she needed to fight even more A.I.? "There's... so many choices... How do I even know what to pick?" she pondered aloud.
"Aw that's easy," Daniel said as she stopped pushing Rachel and stepped in front of her. "Just pick what you like. What do you like to do in a fight?" she asked gesturing to the vast array of weapons around them.
"I...I don't know. What do you like to do?" Rachel asked hoping Daniel's answer might help her know how to think about fighting.
"Me? That's easy, I like to punch stuff! Really hard in the face!" Daniel grabbed two silver and blue bars off her belt and her hands became encased in sliver gauntlets with blue details on them and strange bands around her wrists. She punched at the air around her a few times and threw in a kick for good measure. "I'm a brawler, and I like to get up close and personal in a fight!" she said with pride, pointing her thumb at her chest. Rachel thought about what Daniel had said before responding. What did she like to do? It want to do rather since she had only fought once. "Well. I'm not really that good of a fighter. I just want to protect people. I don't want anyon around me getting hurt." Daniel tapped her chin on thought for a moment before snapping her fingers. "I think I know just the thing!"
A few minutes later in a small training room Daniel stepped back and looked at Rachel approvingly. "Eeyup! I think this suits you perfectly girl." Rachel looked down at the device she now had strapped to her right hand. It was a large circular shield, about a meter in diameter, with a cuff attached to her forearm underneath it and a harness that had a circular metal disk set just below her shoulder blades on her back. "Give it a try!" Daniel coaxed the raven haired girl encouragingly. Rachel turned to look at the sparring dummy and targets Daniel had set up towards the middle of the room. "And don't forget to play with the buttons! See all it can do!" the gray haired girl called out from behind Rachel. The timid new baiter stepped up to the dummy and raised her shield up in front of her. She lightly thrust it forward, barely nudging the dummy with the front of the shield. "Hit her harder than that! Come on really let her have it!" Daniel yelled out encouragingly. Rachel tried harder, and again harder, still just nudging and pushing the dummy, another shout from Daniel got her to finally put some force behind it and a loud clang was heard as the dummy was shoved back. Hoping not to disappoint her new friend Rachel took a step forward and then brought the shield back to pinch the dummy with the front edge this time. As Daniel kept shouting encouragements at her Rachel became more and more bold. She tried one of the buttons on her hand control and a blue energy disk formed around the edges of the shield, doubling its size for added protection. She then tried another and a triangular blade of the same blue energy extended from the front of the shield. She used this to slash the dummy a few time until it fell to pieces. Then as a last test Rachel span around and launched the shield at the target a few meters away from her. The shield flew like a frisbee and struck the target with a loud clang. Then before it hit the ground Rachel hit the last button on her controls and the shield continued soaring through the air, completing the second half of a circular flight and returning to her hand. Panting but feeling quite proud of herself Rachel turned back to face Daniel, placing the shield on her back. "So... How was that?" The gray haired girl ran up and grabbed Rachel's hands and spun her around in a circle. "That was amazing!"
Rachel and Daniel left the training room to head towards where Rachel would get her room that she would be living in. As Daniel celebrated Rachel's new found abilities with her new weapon of choice Rachel began to think that maybe, just maybe, she could actually pull off this while baiter thing.

With the hum of machinery and a flash of light, Jason materialized in the teleporter room. He shuddered as the initial rush left him. “Woah. That was new... Now then, I just need to-” As Jason took a step, he lurched and clasped his hand to his mouth. “Okay. That’s very new.” He’d suddenly discovered that he had to force down his lunch. Jason had never teleported before, and the sudden and very new experience had given him an awful case of teleportation sickness... Nope. Not going to vomit at Headquarters. Definitely not going to do that. Absolutely not. Nope.
He straightened himself back up, swallowed hard, and forced himself to focus on the ground. “Okay. One step at a time...” he told himself as he made his way off the platform and tried his very best not to look like he was about to vomit... He made his way down the hall ahead of him and through the crowd of people in an effort to find Quan’s office. He’d been told previously that he was the man to talk to about getting his B.A.I.T.R. ID, but unfortunately he had not been told where to find him. First, he tried following the crowd. Surely he wasn’t the only new baiter in need of an ID, and if Quan was so important than his office should be in a central location, right? So Jason followed the crowd and took in the sites. The Headquarters was... different than he’d expected. He’d imagined essentially an aircraft-carrier in the middle of the ocean, but what he’d found was practically a tropical resort, but with more guns. The sun was warm and bright, and the sky was blue... He’d lived in a metropolis for so long, he’d half forgotten what it looked like to see a sky that wasn’t mired in pollution and smoke. As Jason searched, his search turned into wandering as he took in the sights of the sky and the sea, and then his wandering got him well and truly lost. [You do not know where you are going, do you?] Solitaire grumbled. Jason couldn’t see the AI, but he almost heard the satisfied smirk in it’s voice. “Quiet. I’m just enjoying the scenery.” Jason retorted.[Oh yes, I noticed you eyeing those females earlier. You organics are so predictable...] “That’s not what I was-” [You put me in your glasses. I can tell what you’re looking at.] Jason deflated and sighed. “Fine, yes. But I’ll find my way. It must be around here somewhere...”
--
Nearly an hour later, Jason finally found the office in question. As he walked in, Quan looked up from his desk. “Eh? Oh, another one. Please, come in. I take it you’re here for your ID?” Jason frowned. “How did you...?” Quan smirked. “I can see the code in your sunglasses. It’s subtle, but when you’ve been at this as long as I have you get pretty good at seeing it. Now come on, if you want your card I’ll need some DNA. A strand of hair should do.” “Sure I shouldn’t just spit on it? I’m French, we’re pretty good at that.” Jason joked, which only earned him a sideways look from the other man. Jason sighed and plucked a short hair from the back of his head. “Fine fine, I get it. You don’t like jokes...” “Oh, I do. That one just wasn’t funny.” Quan replied as he fused the hair with Jason’s new ID card with a flash. Jason just shrugged. “Everyone’s a critic.” Quan looked at Jason with a new understanding, the ID card giving him a brief glimpse into the other man’s life. “Yes. I suppose everyone is. But I think you’ll do well here. Provided you check that ego at the door.” Jason smirked. “Does anyone else?” Quan just laughed. “No. No I suppose they usually don’t.”
--
Jason packed his new ID into his inside coat pocket as he left Quan's office. “Strange man...” He mused. [Are there men that are not strange?] Solitaire asked. Jason smirked. “I honestly can’t tell if you’re being serious, or if that was you trying to make a joke.” [Both.] Jason chuckled and shook his head. “We’re all a little strange Mon Ami.” Jason turned and made his way down the hall and back outside into the sun... “Now then... Let’s find someplace to live...” As Jason made his way down the street, he once again had to marvel at the scenery. He’d never spent much time near the ocean, and even when he had it was only the english channel. The grimey, windswept corridor of water hardly compared to the wide open blue yonder that he now saw, shimmering in the sunlight. He half wanted to leap off the nearest pier and go for a swim, but decided that maybe he should save such mischief for after he’d finished his new responsibilities and reported for his new duties. As he walked, looking aimlessly at the sea and sky, he was thoughtless to where he was going and accidentally bumped into a beautiful girl in a black dress. He swore quietly in French at his carelessness and quickly apologized. “I’m very sorry Madame, I wasn’t paying any attention...” He didn’t know her yet, but he had just walked right into Rachel Caldwell, another new Baiter like himself, also on her way to find a place to live...

Rachel Caldwell
As Rachel and Daniel left the main building for headquarters and headed off towards the baiter apartments Rachel got her first good look at the island. To be honest Rachel had not even realized that she had been on an island this whole time. The blue sky over head and the distant sound of waves she heard we a new sensation. She hadn't heard the ocean in so long, not since her terrible journey to Toronto had started. And the warm tropical breeze felt so good as it caressed her cheeks. For the past year she had known nothing but the bitter coldness of the north and the mountains as she had tried to find the safe haven of Toronto with her siblings. She let a small smile creep onto her lips as she enjoyed the warm sensations.
Daniel noticed her new friend appearing happy for pretty much the first time since she had met her and grinned. "Now there's what I like to see. I think you're gonna do just fine here shorty." she said as she placed a reassuring hand on Rachel's shoulder. The girls took a few more steps before Daniel suddenly remembered something. "Oh man! I just realized I totally forgot to report back in after my mission!" she blurted out, smacking her palm against her forehead. "I gotta go and check in, I'll find you later okay?"
Daniel then turned and ran back off towards headquarters, calling out a "See you later!" as she waved back to her new friend. And just like that Rachel was alone in the big city. The raven haired girl turned to watch her friend suddenly rush off and comprehended just enough to give a small confused wave in return. "Oh... O-okay... um, bye?" she squeaked out. Rachel honestly had no idea where she was supposed to be going. She figured she should try finding her way on her own, if Shen was a baiter now she needed to be able to do things on her own right? But after just a minute or two of walking the poor girl was completely lost. Rachel had no idea which way she had come from or which way she was going. A panic attack was about to begin taking hold of her when suddenly a black clad man in sunglasses bowled into her. It wasn't that hard of a bump but Rachel jumped at the sudden contact which caused her to fall flat on her back. The shield that was hidden by her hair made a loud clanging noise as it hit the street. Rachel looked a little dazed and when she realized what had just happened the girl turned a beat red, bringing her hands up in fists to cover the bottom half of her face. She just laid there for a moment before she had her wits about her enough to try and get up. "Oh, I'm...it's okay. I should have... been watching where I was going..." Rachel said meekly as she tried to stand. However as she used her legs she suddenly realized she wasn't going anywhere. Unused to the large metal shield strapped to her back the raven haired girl was stuck on her back like a turtle. She became a bit panicked and began flailing her and and legs to try and right herself. "Um... help! I-I'm stuck!... I can't get up... help me p-please!" she begged trying to keep panic from creeping into her voice.

It had been one heck of a turn around when they were talking, on their way back through the jungle. When he had dropped the miserable topics of before, and asked about her music, he ended up learning quite a lot about the woman he was teamed up with. About why she had chosen the violin, and the impact it had on her. It was quite the beautiful tale, really. It was one of the first instruments that she had heard, and she felt it was so alluring she could not help but to learn it. Love at first sound. They continued to talk as they walked, and he got even deeper into her head as they started talking about even more personal things. He was actually quite surprised by it all, really. The way that she seemed to be completely aware of the fact that the past relationship was a waste of her time, but at the same time she was unable to let it go. It was a hard situation to be in, for sure. He couldn't necessarily blame her for it at all. It had been a long period of her life she had invested in that man, of course she still felt attachments about it. She just deserved so much better. And she knew that she was never truly in love. This was the most important part--it was what told him that she would definitely be able to move forward from this predicament of hers.
As he found himself soon standing in the Portal room, he took a deep breath as he looked around. It was over now. They had made it successfully back from their little excursion. The mission itself had been child's play. He knew, now, that he was strong enough to fight these A.I. on even ground. They would never dominate him like he had been dominated by them in the past. He would not be torn asunder by just any enemy. He was sure there were stronger foes out there--he heard there were locations that he was able to go to now that he could not have gone to before he was raised to the level of a real 'Baiter'. But, for now, he was just glad to know that he was strong enough to face those stronger enemies. He looked around, knowing that Sarah was going to be coming through the Portal any time, now, and when she appeared right near him, he smiled toward her with a nod. "Thank you...Sarah. For being there. For coming with me and for talking to me, just like a normal person. It was incredibly kind of you. I wouldn't want to keep you too much longer, though. I imagine now that we're back, you've got some things you must be doing, no?" He stated, figuring she would likely want to be getting some rest.
He could have sworn that he heard some voices not too far away--a girl crying out about being stuck, but she was asking for assistance, so he imagined that she was likely with someone who was able to help her--if she continued to cry out for too long he would check it out, but for now he was more interested in figuring out what to do from here. He needed a break from field work--for sure. He just wanted to relax and get away from it all.
