I understand the US government being all paranoid about terrorists...but if you don't trust your neighbors.. who happen to be one of your biggest supporters.. who will you trust? xp

Passports are something you have to get to leave the country. It isn't so much a "We don't trust Canada/(Insert Country Here)" thing. It's a "Hey, this guy is cool to enter your country" thing. Then an "Alright, you're from here, come on in" thing once you return.
So if you want to look at it as a trust issue, it's probably closer to "Some of our citizens are batshit crazy, so they should probably stay here".

Canadian border guards accept valid drivers licenses and birth certificates as ID 3nodding
unless that is just a Niagara Falls thing*shrugs* I have never crossed the border there so I have no idea.. all I really know is that before January I could take a plane anywhere between here and in the states and all I needed was my license and birth certificate..now I am all annoyed because of my hermit status it is very difficult for me to get my stupid passport stare

Oh no, you're right.
but yeah it depends on how you are planning to cross the Canadian border. As of January 23, 2007, the WHTI requires American citizens to present a passport when crossing the Canadian border by air. So, all airports in Canada now ask to see passports from all people traveling from outside of Canada, including from the US.
I did read someone also, that in 2008, or even later 2007, you are going to need one to go into canada by ground travel.
edit: I do think it is absolutely silly.. but.. *sigh*

That's sweet. Very. You say it's an issue of "don't you trust us?'...
Right up until the point where the border patrol stops someone with an outstanding warrant for several homicide prosecutions. Then you're grateful that nobody ever gave them a passport so that they could get into your country.
