"Nope." Arianeira said, trying to make light of it. "There were more of them at the beginning but over time many chose citizenship and other races. My family never integrated, only ever marrying other earthlings. Pretty stupid, but their obsession passed down from generation to generation. Members of the family used to disappear in order to try and return from time to time and over time the line started to die out. My parents' generation especially. I have some distant cousins left I think, but they've probably either married each other or Karans by now." She shrugged. "I never really had much to do with my family to be honest, so I can't be sure."

Real Space"Wait... There are humans still able to reproduce with other humans?" Stratford spoke lowly, looking around. His head span with the news. If anyone found out, they'd be experimented on like gerbils.

"What?" Arianeira said, confused. "Well, yeah, they never married out if that's what you mean. They're all gone now, unless you count the cousins I mentioned earlier." She was still obviously puzzled by his expression. "That's important?" She ventured, still uncomprehending.

James shook his head, unbelievingly, Humans can no longer reproduce with just two humans. The lose of Earths set fields on our bodies have taken that, but we can reproduce with other species. His tone grew suspicious, You never knew?

"No." Arianeira said, shaking her head. Her first instinct had been that he had to be joking, but she could tell from his face that he wasn't. She thought back to her days on Kara. Admittedly, the planet was small and out of the way, but still... She frowned. She'd always assumed that other humans had simply wanted to reproduce with other races rather than seeing a steady narrowing of their gene pool, but maybe not. But if her parents had known and had just not told her... it might explain why they were so obsessive about not inter-marrying and their desire to return to Earth. But why wouldn't they tell her? "But..." She started then stopped. But why hadn't she worked it out after joining the pirates? They were mostly mixed-race and had probably assumed she was the same. "I guess I never noticed because I never really thought about it." She finished lamely.

James nodded to himself. This girl was clearly more sheltered then a multi-story car park. Right... Sleep time. James gave Arianeira a swift 'good night' kiss and walked to his own room, pointedly leaving the door open.

((More sheltered than a multi-storey car park? xd ))
Still one hundred per cent confused by Stratford's reaction and even more baffled by his abrupt departure, Arianeira sat down on the edge of the bed. She then stood up and closed her own bedroom door before returning to the bed. This time she sat cross-legged in the middle of it, her brow wrinked in a frown as she ran back through the conversation. He hadn't explained anything, then just walked out on her. Arianeira was considerably annoyed. And the more she thought about it, typically, the more her irritation grew. Finally, as she knew she was going to glean absolutely no information from what he had already said whatsoever, she made a strangled inarticulate noise and threw the pillow across the room in a childish display of temper.

James himself had no such problems. He shook his head at her lack of knowing that which others had had to deal with for millenia and drew of his shirt. Despite being tired, he knelt on the ground, then begun to do push ups, mind on the car again. Where could he find one?

After fuming for another several minutes, Arianeira remarked acidly under her breath that he wasn't worth the effort of being with. She got up, slouched across the room, retrieved the pillow and threw it on the bed. She slipped quickly out of her clothes, being careful to leave all her weapons within easy reach, and got into bed. Her sulking gave way to tiredness and she easily fell asleep within minutes, pulling the blankets up over her head.

Stratford lay awake, staring at his ceiling. He sat up and got out of bed, but didn't bother putting any clothes other than his uniform trousers. He moved into the main room and paused, looking at the seat he'd kissed Arianeira on. A smile flicked over his lips, then he turned to the hologram display. "Hyperon." He whispered. "Answer in text only. I need this silent."
The words Affirmative slid over a small off shoot of the pad. "I need to see what a car looks like."
An image of a car slid up, and Stratford knelt to look closer at it. "Can you shield it faintly to allow touching?" he touched the car and felt a cool buzz under his fingers. "Thank you." He patted the shield affectionately, then returned to looking at the car. He wished he knew how to find one. He put a hand to his forhead and felt dispair.

Arianeira did not hear the movement. A small smile curved her lips as she dreamed and burrowed further into the blankets.

Stratford eventually sat down, and leant back, eyeing the screen. He cursed loudly, then covered his mouth, hardly daring to breathe. He didn't want to wake Arianeira. He put his head in his hands, and looked back at the car again. It niggled the back of his mind, but why?

Arianeira opened her eyes, instantly alert. She didn't know what she had heard, but she was a light sleeper. It took her a second to remember where she was, then she relaxed again. She cautiously moved the covers back from over her head and glanced towards the door, squinting until her eyes adjusted. She couldn't hear anything further, but she didn't really feel like sleeping anymore either. If she didn't she'd be grumpy in the morning though. She sighed and stared at the ceiling, willing herself to go black to sleep.

Unaware of the movement, James Stratford slapped at the car, forgetting the shield. He cursed again as it burned his hand, turning from the object to go to his medicine counter. He removed a lotion for plasma burns and used that. His cut wasn't a plasma burn, but plasma could burn like a shield, so it was still effective.

Arianeira sat up. What on earth is he doing? She wondered, frowning. She quickly got dressed again and debated whether to go and find out what was going on. She left her boots off - they weren't really needed indoors anyway - and opened her bedroom door slightly. She could still hear muffled movement from the front room. She wanted to go and look. She didn't want him to think she was spying on him. She sighed and rolled her eyes in self-deprecation. Why was she worrying so much about something so simple? Decision made, she stepped out into the corridor. She hesitated again for a second before closing the door, then closed it loudly so that he would definitely hear it. Now he could stop or head her off if he wanted to. Still curious why she cared so much about what he thought of her, she walked slowly down the corridor, leaving him plenty of time.
