I think C.S. Lewis is overly religious and long-winded, and I think Tolkien is dry as dust, long-winded and self-righteous. (Oh, right, so is Lewis.) But, out of the two, Lewis's books were more whimsical and readable, as long as you ignored the BLATANT religious imagery, which I couldn't stand. So, Lewis.
