Nines, having heard snippets, knew he had attracted some attention. More to the point, he could hear tension between the butler and Dag, but not what it was specifically about. So he played it off as the door opening, by nodding politely to Jan.
No, not particularly. I was curious who was present when I heard you speaking with someone, little more.

"I am with the ex-shipman, sir. Mister Dagoth, Why don't you come in and join us? It will be my honour to introduce you."
Stepping aside to open the door fully and admit Nines ahead of himself, Jan was watching both men carefully by turn. Mostly because Roan was busy and would want to know later how the two reacted to each other.
"My apologies it is not her Ladyship seeing to this. Sir Dagoth, may I present Nines. Sir Nines, may I present Dagoth."

"Merc"
Dagoth gave a curt nod, he didn't trust anyone here at unless Dagoth's ears were betraying him he was struggling to pick up a noticeable heart beat. Either this one was another cainite or one of Roan's thralls. The pirate watched Nines body language carefully watching for any signs of aggression.

Nope. No heartbeat, merely the jingling of metal beneath his jeans and polo shirt. Nines was a dead man through and through.
In response to the former sailor, the young caitiff hiked an eyebrow skyward.
Former seaman, huh? What brings you here?

"Pirate Jan, I didn't work for no navy."
Dagoth spoke very slowly, he wanted to make sure that to him and those with him were not commissioned men. It would be unwise for anyone to push that point further.
"Got lost on my way to the dole. You merc?"

Aggressive negotiations on a contract.
Wary of delivering too much, Nines stated the simplest explanation for his predicament he could come up with. While truthful, it left the details up tot he imagination.
Folding his arms over his chest he shrugged.
A pirate, a drunk and a luckless merc all walk into a house...sounds like a bad joke, no?

"Just missing a goat and a nun. Then its the holy trinity of ******** up."
Dagoth was listening very careful, he figured that he wasn't of Roan's bloodline then if he was to be trusted for his word. It was unlikely anyone of his profession would be here unless they were being paid to be.
"There is only one thing I've got to ask. Which I guess is the only sensible question to ask. Why us?"

At the question presented, Nines began to chuckle. That chuckle grew into an uneasy laugh, one that was tinged with more than a little tension and creepiness. It was short lived, but left a very awkward silence in the seconds after the laughter faded.
Mate, you don't want to know. You really, really don't.
And despite the grin on his face, the look in Nines' eyes was not one of mirth, but an inscrutable feeling that could not easily be defined. It left his thoughts as an enigma, which suited his purposes just fine. After all, he was now taking a step back, preparing to walk away and leave things where they stood.

"If not you... who else."
Jan spoke quietly, as Nines finished. The look on his face had gone from marginally hostile, after Dagoth calling him on his ability to tell the truth, to now an inscrutable look of mixed emotions, including sadness.
"You yourself, Dagoth, know there is something.... it cannot be put into words. Better you ask yourself why the word seaman makes you assume I mean commissioned, or why, Nines, she has not asked your true name as yet. Why does Corbin howl, and has no surname? Why are you both skirting around what you really mean?
There is a great strength in words. A very, very great strength. That is why you are here. That is why you. Because of a word. When you are able to articulate exactly what you mean... then prehaps you will have your answers gentlemen.
Will that be all?"

"Indeed it will be. Perhaps Jan there are questions best left unanswered."
Dagoth watched Jan from the corner of his eye, his body still facing Nines. The pirate did not handle this cryptic s**t well and it was beginning to piss him off.
"I take it Roan is dealing with Corbin."

She hasn't because she knows better.
A short answer, spoken perhaps a hair sharper than it was intended to have been. Nines was touchy on a few subjects, and his name was among them.
Having already begun backing out the doorway, Nines chose to withdraw properly. All this talk had reminded him of his original goal in venturing out, and he had a bit of looking yet to do. Jan and Dag could wax philosophical all they chose; either way, Nines had no answers, and wasn't getting any in anything resembling a hurry.

"The Lady is not with the young master at present, however she is preparing for an event involving him on the morrow. I apologise again for her absence."
Watching Nines leave, Jan raised an eyebrow briefly, then shook his head.
"I fear there is not much ore I can do for either of you tonight. Nothing in life, or death, is ever simple."

You could, Jan, unlock the front door so I can head into town for a bit. It's been months since I've been at my local hideaway, and I could use a few things.
What those things were, Nines wasn't so sure he wanted to say. But the request was placed, for Jan to take as he would.

"Then please look into my request. I will be here"
With that Dagoth knelt, he kept the simulation as it was and would use it for the next few hours to practise his mediation and control. Then he would look at running some very high level cardio and training.

"Very good sir. The book will be in your room this evening, also."
Bowing to Dagoth, Jan turned and followed Nines to the front door, unbolting it.
"I know I speak out of turn when I say so sir... but while her Ladyship has no intention of keeping you prisoner here, please be careful while you are outside of the grounds. It is my fondest wish to see sir return as whole as he is now.
Travel safely."
