Nyoko climbed slowly up onto the rock. Flopping down, he gave a peek towards his mom. She was fixing her hair, reading some book on mages or something. He sighed. He really thought she could teach Pire lots more than he could, but Pire was set against it.
"I wanna know what a 'Firefox' is," Nyoko said, winkling his nose. "We have demons who have fox traits, like Mama and I have cat traits, but not all of them are mages, and not all of the fox mages know fire...."

"Well, the book says there's this tribe of fox people who live in the Arbrine Forests. Everyone is born with the power to manipulate the forest and the purpose of the tribes is to keep it healthy and help it grow. But whenever there's a huge war and the fox people might all be killed, someone is born with the power to make fire. That's the Firefox. He's always really powerful and wins the war for the other fox people, but he can't live in the forest because he's got no growing magic and he'll burn it down. Since there's no other firefoxes, one of them started writing this book to teach the later ones how to use their power, and everyone has added to it ever since."
Winded by his long explanation, Pire took a deep breath and patted the book fondly. "There's lots of stuff in Flametongue, but I don't really get most of it."

Nyoko's eyes widened. "Wow. That sounds complicated." He glanced over to his mother. "I bet Mama Kira doesn't know about that." He grinned. "Mama Kira wants to know about everything in every world," he explained. "She's a really good mage, and real smart, but she says there are other worlds that she doesn't know about yet."
He stared at Pire's book. "Firefox, huh?" He tilted his head, thoughts and images racing through his mind. Nyoko nodded slowly. "So, then! I guess we better get started."

Pire nodded enthusiastically, pushing the volumous tome at Nyoko. "Can we start here?" he said, pointing at a line of firesign script. "It says something about the difference between bright fire and hot fire but I don't really get it. Bright fire isn't supposed to burn but it's still hot. It doesnt' make sense."

Nyoko wrinkled his nose. Mama Kira would know the answer. He tried to think like her. He twiddled his tail as he spoke, "Weeeellll...maybe it's more like the sun kinda hot. It's warm, but real bright. Like, ya know, when you look up in the sky...it hurts when you stare at it, but it doesn't burn."
He glanced up at the sky, blinking as his eyes met the glare of the sun's rays. "Like that," he mummured angerly, rubbing his eyes. Stupid Nyoko! Of course he'd have to prove it in such a stupid way.
