Specterdust stood there and tilted her head as she watched everyone find something that could help solve the mystery of what happened here. All she knew was the the blood was over powering her sniffer and Kevin had crawled under her belly and between her front legs. Even sidekicks had limits. So far it seemed the South side held something of interest, or she could contemplate going to the East to look for this Electus Ajali.

She looked down at Kevin, “I think I really only have a chance of doing some good inspecting the South. I’m not sure my short little legs could get to the east fast enough. What do you think?”

He tilted his head at her and then nodded, “Let’s inspect the south, one of those does heard something, someone hiding in the trees.”

“Very well,” Specterdust replied. She looked up and in her small voice loudly said, “I’m going to check the South side. I’m too short to go to the Greenstone Plateau in a reasonable amount of time.”

Despite her short squatness, Specterdust marched over towards the south side. The doe, Indira, had heard something over there. Nerida saw something on a tree which as Specterdust saw, tilting her head back to see, it wasn’t a small creature who made those marks. The fancy spotty doe...Cattleya? She saw scales. Specterdust wondered if the scales belonged to whoever made the sound Indira heard.

Kevin didn’t like that Specter had moved and rushed to stay close to her side. Specter looked at him and then at the trees, “Shall I launch you up there? You can go look for the creature that Indira heard.” Kevin seemed to blanch but understood the importance of what they were here to do. He nodded and then hopped up to Specter’s back. She bucked, sending Kevin flying through the air and up into the trees. He used his wings and feet and managed to land somewhat gracefully.

“You ok? Did you make it, Kevin?” Specterdust called.

“Yeah, I made it!” he shouted back. There was rustling as he worked his way along the branches.

Searching South: 11 + 1

Her first pass seemed to yield nothing conclusive. Unwilling to give up, Cinder glanced up to see where her fellow travelers had went, hoping that perhaps some of them had found some useful clues.

Her gaze settled upon a dark adept who looked both confident and competent. A good lead to follow perhaps? She moved in the direction that Indira seemed to be going.

"Have you spotted anything to the south, noulja?" Cinder asked as she drew near, peering out in that direction.

Indira's ear swooshed towards the very pink Noul who addressed her. "Who knows what the idiots on the council are capable of. Well, this apparently." She cast her head around, indicating all of the blood. Fleet remained silent, but Indira could feel how apprehensive she was.

At least the pink Noul wasn't tip-toeing around. Indira could appreciate that. As she was about to approach to lend a hand with the investigation of the splatter, she heard a noise. Up above her head. It wasn't very loud, but her ears caught it. Had that been a squeak?

Fleet's face turned upward towards the trees. That confirmed to Indira it wasn't her ears playing tricks on her. She stepped closer to the trees, peering upwards, trying to see if she could catch the noise once more.

As she did another Noul approached. Indira spared a quick glance for her, and nodded. "Well, not spotted as much as heard. Some sort of squeak. Up in these trees. I can't tell which tree it came from though."

In the blood and dirt and grass, Cattleya could see a little glint of something shiny. It took her a bit to get ahold of it and clean it off, but eventually she could tell it was a scale, and that there were a few more of its kind. A witness, perhaps?

Of course she kept her ears flicking about as she searched, conscious that whatever had caused this could just as soon return as it had left. So she caught a bit of what the buck was telling Russet Fawn: the resurrection target had been something big. "Excuse me - " she said in response, looking over. "Do you recall who else might have been invited, or any preparations you'd been told to make?" Had this buck handled any of those larger remains lately?

She paused, surveying the activity going out around the hill. Everyone was searching quite diligently. "It might give us a good idea of who else we might need to check in on, or give us an idea of what...what might have transpired. I think...Penna Beetleshell, and all of the lifebringers, really, are important figures to us all. We'll all do our best to figure this out."

Havoc spotted exactly what he had been hoping for, tracks! Small noulicorn tracks, but also larger ones that filled him with an immediate uneasy dread. He had never seen anything like them before. It certainly seemed that these may be the tracks of whatever did this... was it safe to be following them? But someone had left the clearing, and had been alive enough to leave on their hooves, he thought, as he tried to peer after them down the hill. Alright, he reluctantly knew he needed to investigate and pretend to be brave and junk.

Just as he was about to head after the prints, he noticed a pink and white doe nearby also investigating the possible trail. "What do you think? Want to investigate this with me?" He pointed his hoof at the various tracks he had found, careful not to disturb them. Hoping she would come with, but not wanting to admit he was scared out of his gourd, he stepped gingerly around the tracks to begin following them down the west side of the hill. Moving as quietly as he could, he searched for the next tracks and any other signs of someone or something in the mossy underbrush.

Dryxel looked around to see if anynoul else had found anything but no noul was saying they had found anything as of yet. "All just so you know i found a feather and it does not look to be a good thing." he knew this party would have to be very vocal and informative. Knowledge is power Dryxel knew this to be true in all of his patrolling.

With a sullen sigh Dryxel see that some of the nouls are heading to the south to search. In his experience it was always better to stick together, so he decides to follow them to check out whatever it is they have seen.

"No you're right, definitely not a familiar... nothing i know of could do ...this" she replied to the adept doe before she shuddered, whistling for her own familiar, a little brownish Faery she'd named Hunts by Night "Stay with me, don't go flying off" she told him, as she watched Indira say the same to her Jackhop. "True, we need to search but be careful not to taint the area but we need to be fast too"

Ellanoire

She moved, as others did, to search the area, spotting something just out of the brush, once she saw, and realised what it was, she scrambled back a few paces "oh...no..." she breathed, barely audible. "Hey... Hey guys... " she called for any of the nouls close by "I really don't think we should split up.... something big.. and strong.. did this" she said, pulling the bone out into plain view of the others. Something this dangerous ... smaller groups had less defences. She felt bad for the apprentice maybe seeing the bone but she was practical enough to know that everyone needed to know as much as possible to know what they were dealing with.

She'd seen the doe from earlier go south, another could of does following and she debated going south herself. Another doe was questioning the apprentice buck, then Dryxel mentioned finding a bloody feather, well finding that wasn't too strange, given that there was blood all over the place but finding it where he had, was odd, then the apprentice mentioned it being one of the lifebringer's feathers and that what had been brought back was big... "Definitely sticking together is the best plan i think" she said loudly, hoping the others would think the same, something tragic had already happened, she didn't want something worse to happen to the Nouls, and other critters, she was with.

Examining the South clues

Dryxel spoke of a blood-soaked feather that the scared youth recognized. Seemed it belonged to his teacher? Interesting. Perhaps she'd find another clue that could hopefully shed light on the morbid surroundings right now.

Nereida inspected her surroundings as the tinge of metallic essence filled her senses with dread. The grass was slick in places from freshly poured crimson where she had to be careful not to tread within. Making her way toward the southside of a tall moss-covered Redwood she stopped immediately capturing an image in her mind. The bark of the tree was gorged with claw marks so intense that the pulp of the tree was exposed like an open wound. Turning her head she inspected the nearby trees, none of which carried this peculiar set of marks. Whatever; whoever did this was either announcing their presence or leaving some kind of warning. Realizing another had spoken she glanced upward to see a doe accompanied by a jackhop. As her mind was configuring her find she responded to Russet Fawn, "This tree... look how it is scratched to the point the pulp is exposed. I can't help but wonder if its a signal or a territory marking from whatever was resurrected. By the size of some of those drying prints I'd say we're dealing with something much more massive then ourselves".

Nereida knew others were probably listening in but, she decided to announce her find incase the others had ideas, "This tree has odd scratchings, claw marks. Those drying prints are telling me this is something larger than even the tallest buck. Be on guard"!

Returning her attention to Fawn she breathed, "Have you found anything yet? Perhaps two sets of eyes are better than one in this situation?" She then paused, "My apologies... three sets of eyes" she noted in reference to Talltale not wanting him to feel left out.

Hunting southerly for clues

Fawn watched as clues were found, ones that made the youth even more frantic. The feather from his mentor, the prints that were every where. The whole thing was making her nervous. Shaking her head again to snap herself out of it she glanced back at the youth that spoke of the bringing back something bigger then a familiar. This caused even her to have worries. This didn't sound the greatest, but it seemed that there was someone to the east that knew about what was going on. Perhaps there was something there, but it seemed that the interest was here and the safety of others.

"To the east huh?" She had mused before Nereida said something about a tree being slashed up.

Being one of the many Botanics in the group, she went over and looked at the tree and frowned. Who would do a thing like this? It was obvious that they hosted a serious set of claws. Wishing that she had higher magics then Adept. She didn't know what to do about it. Having a better ability then Garden sense would have been nice here.

"Didn't really find anything physically, but the youth mentioned another that was supposed to be here, but didn't show up. Perhaps there is something there, but they live to the east." Fawn told the lilac doe as she looked towards her and away from the tree.

Talltale on the other hoof had dropped to the ground and was sniffing around. He hopped over to the tree and pawed around at the scraps of bark and tree bits that laid about the ground. The scent was obviously new to him, but the carnage wasn't. He had seen catbeasts scratch trees and anything else to scare off rivals. But this wasn't catbeast, these were something more deadly.

"I suggest we don't get too far from the rest of the group." he looked to the does, "Whatever this was, it can rival a catbeast and probably win." Talltale had edged his way back from the tree and crouched close to Fawn's legs. Whatever it was that he had smelt, it wasn't good. Nothing scared Talltale easily, but this had put him on clear edge.

Russet Fawn frowned at her bond before looking back to Nereida with concern. Perhaps sticking with the group would be wise. The fear that rolled off Talltale effected her too and had every hair on her body standing on end and she didn't think they would flatten down any time soon... For now, she would have to try and push them down and comfort Talltale while hunting for more clues. Though the idea of going to Greenstone Plateau was first on her list to head to...

Investigating EAST
12+0=12

"Aha!" Sweetpea exclaimed. She wasn't as bad at this as she thought. Though it was a small clue, she could tell that the blood went east, trailing away. Maybe someone had survived! They'd escaped and walked away!

She turned happily to the buck who spoke to her, nodding. "Sure! What did you find?" She examined the prints closely, and her confidence deflated. "I thought maybe someone had escaped, but whatever those prints are is different. Do you think they were chased out?" She paused, contemplating. "Hunted out?" She shuddered at the thought. This was too spooky.

"I think we should follow these are far as we can. They must lead to some other clue."

Specterdust

Although Kevin made it up into the trees, he can’t seem to find the source of the squeaking. He might have gotten close enough that whoever was making all the fuss decided to pipe down.

Cinder

Cinder spots a knothole in one of the trees! It’s a good 8 feet up and there are vicious claw marks all over the base of the tree. If she squints, she can just make out the glitter of something moving around in there!

Indira

Indira spots a knothole in one of the trees! It’s a good 8 feet up and there are vicious claw marks all over the base of the tree. The squeaking she heard earlier sounds suspiciously like voices, and there’s definitely more than one!

Lady Cattleya

The perlino swung his head around with a snap as Cattleya addressed him, ears pinned back and eyes wide. The poor thing was nearly shaking out of his legs.

“I…” he stared at the bloody ground. “There were… there were lots… I think… I…”

He seems too frightened to remember!

Havoc

Unfortunately - being shaken out of his gourd - Havoc is too preoccupied with his own worry to spot any other clues down the west side of the hill. Those footprints have to continue around here somewhere!

Dryxel

The trees on the south side of the hill are quite tall, and it seems a few of the noulicorns have spotted something higher up. Dryxel catches sight of a sturdy, fallen log that might make a useful ladder or perch of some sort.

Owlheart

Owlheart spots a knothole in one of the trees! It’s a good 8 feet up and there are vicious claw marks all over the base of the tree. There appears to be some nesting debris spilling out of the knothole. This might be someone’s home!

Nereida

The trees on the south side of the hill are quite tall, and it seems a few of the noulicorns have spotted something higher up. Nereida notices a few branches on the trees next to it that might be sturdy enough for a dexterous noulicorn to climb.

Russet Fawn

Russet Fawn spots a knothole in one of the trees! It’s a good 8 feet up and there are vicious claw marks all over the base of the tree. For a moment, a flash of bright eyes appears in the shadow, then disappears deeper into the hole.

DarkHeartedSorrow

Sweetpea picks up the trail of hooves a few meters down the side of the hill! It’s difficult to tell, but it seems like there’s at least four sets of the strange giant tracks. And… and those are definitely a couple noulicorn prints in them too!

The tracks continue to head further down the hill.

You can ask the young buck more questions! He’s pretty shaken up, though, so you’ll need to roll 2d6 + CHARM to get him to talk.

Indira was careful to keep her ears open, and stay alert as she scanned the trees. The doe who'd spoken to her while searching in the open had a good point. "You're right noulja. I wouldn't think we should be venturing off alone. Best to stay close."

The squeak again! Ah - but that was more than a squeak. A little voice, perhaps? Her eyes went up the tree in front of her. It was covered in deep rends from ... something. Claws perhaps? They ran a solid eight feet up the trunk. Above them was a little knot hole. That seemed like a good hidey hole.

Indira nudged Cinder and pointed her muzzle towards the hole. She kept her voice low, to not alert what was in there. "I think we may have some witnesses ..." She looked around, trying to see a path up that high. Her eyes came to rest upon a fallen trunk. It was certainly more than a sapling, but Indira figured she might be able to wedge it just right ..

She slipped under the fallen tree, and shoved with all her might. Sure enough, it moved. She thanked Grandfather Tree that it was nice and dry. If it had been sodden she was quite sure she would have been out of luck. With great effort she slowly inched it forward towards the scratched up tree, and then did her best to wedge it up onto the trunk. She panted. Perhaps this had been a little excessive?

She nodded to Cinder and then hopped onto the trunk, scrabbling towards the knot hole. She could feel Fleet digging her and holding on for dear life. Perhaps she should have left her companion back on the ground, but Indira wasn't exactly known for her patience.

The fear was frustrating, though Cattleya could understand it. He probably knew the participants of the ceremony personally, after all, and it seemed obvious that they had all been involved in whatever this was somehow. And in this case, that meant danger. She took a breath and tried to match her breathing to his. "We can go through them all together, if it helps. I know I wouldn't normally be taking notes on the other attendees for a resurrection ceremony, if it were me."

She kept an ear open for the other nouls' questions as she talked, and kept her voice sweet and slow. "Perhaps recalling your fellow apprentices, and then the other lifebringers - was Penna Brightheart involved? How about...?" She listed a few more names, belonging to some of the other ascended Lifebringers, names she knew from drinking up any hint of gossip about Homewood's VIPs. "Or were there scouts assigned to stand guard, since you knew the targets would be larger? Who do you typically work with?"

Nereida watched the other doe curiously since she was a Botanic user with a knowledge of plants and trees. Her familiar also mentioned something that these creatures were larger than cat beasts which weren't a comforting thought at all.

"I think" she responded to the other doe, " Staying as a group will be much safer than wandering off until we need to".

Looking upward Nereida noticed the trees on the Southern side were rather tall as she and a few others gazed upward. It seemed the branches would be quite stable if a nimble noul were to scale them. Speaking of which she caught a glance of Indria already scaling a particular tree. Turning to the tree in front of her she looked upward wishing she had her own companion that could easily follow in suit. Nereida, in a nutshell, loved studying just about everything from animals, to plants, and especially the water that ran through Homewood. Needing to know the answer left the doe a bit perplexed yet relaxed while she figured out what route she could take. Laying out her options she initially stood against climbing a tree. Lady Cattleya was still trying to get the information out of the young buck so that option wasn't going to work either. What to do? Wandering off seemed positive but, it also could of lead her or the others into a well-timed trap. The only option left seemed frivolous but, she sided with the thought to try and get the thing up in the knothole's attention. The flash of eyes had only been for a moment according to a few others. Flicking an ear she decided to give it a go increasing her voice, "Hello. I know you are positively frightened right now but, we could use your help if you know anything to help us figure this mess out!"

It seemed a bit ridiculous trying to talk to this creature, but she had to try.
