Merci cranked the wheel to the side and slammed the breaks, bringing the SUV to a full and complete stop in what had to be the worst parallel parking job of her entire life. At the moment, however, the half demon did not really give a fig. Dio was curled up in the passenger seat with his hands clutched over his chest. It had taken her way too long to get across town from the old Victorian she shared with Cinder and their rather large extended family. It was probably a good thing that it hadn't taken her long to decide that they needed to head for the shop. They'd been through too many strange things before to procrastinate. Getting her fiend into the car had been a chore, she hadn't exactly wanted to touch him, and he hadn't been as coherent as he usually was.

In the back seat was Vance, his long body curled up so he fit. The Medusa looked terribly put out or at least as put out as a Gorgon with a blindfold could, considering half their face was covered. Next to him was his own whimpering fiend. With a growl he muttered, "Well we might not have to worry about them too much considering your driving. You're going to kill us before we can even get into that blasted shop."

Merci shot Vance a scathing look over her shoulder that would have withered a lesser being. "Get your fiend out of the car and get inside. Now." Her tone brooked no argument.

With a grumpy hiss the snake opened his door and slithered out onto the ground. "Come on Sully. Or don't. I'm pretty sure that I'll survive whatever's happening to you."

Sulfur was in pain. She was younger than the shadow that was in the passenger seat of the car and whatever was happening to them seemed to be affecting him more. Her blood red eye was creased with pain and she kept one hand up over the stone in her chest. No matter how she felt, she was a lady and she had to remain composed. The crackling along her skin had faded away, but she'd still been instructed not to touch anything unless she absolutely had to. Her guardian was not being as sympathetic as Merci. That was fine by her, she didn't need to be coddled. The girl drifted through the open door and followed after her serpentine guardian to the front of Twilight Designs.

Merci turned to Dio and murmured quietly. "Dio honey, we're here. You just have to make it into the building. Reyna and Athan will know what to do." She tried to sound reassuring. Her fear of the magical man was put aside for the moment in the best interest of her boy. With a concerned look the Kitsune gripped the handle of her car and slid out, holding it open for Dio.

The Stargazer didn't follow right away, it wasn't until Merci said his name again, more firmly that he stirred himself. Lifting from the seat he floated through the open door. It was hard to concentrate, and he could easily have phased through the side of the car but it seemed better to use the opening provided. 'It hurts...'

The woman just bit her lower lip and nodded. "I know, come on we'll get inside and everything will be better. I promise." She made sure he was following her and strode ahead to lead the trio of others to the shop. She reached out to push the door open only to find it locked. Merci scowled and fumbled with her keys, it was a good thing she worked there otherwise she would have had to call someone. Coming up with her key she put it into the lock and turned it, opening the door with the familiar chime only to see the strange scene inside. She put a hand out to stop the others from moving forward, not entirely sure what was going on.

Harper had taken to keeping Flo in the front pocket of his hoodie. Which was a habit he would probably try and break after today. The wisp had literally freaked out, whipping around in there like a cat trapped in a bag. It had actually pulled the Pooka right off his feet, causing him to fall head over tea kettle in front of his brothers. They'd laughed so hard that he was sure he'd never hear the end of it.

Right now though he had other worries. The boy moved fast as he darted through the back alleys of the city toward the jewelry store he'd gotten the little stone from. Harp was by nature nervous, he blamed the rabbit instincts for that, and whatever was happening to the stone freaked him the hell out. The little shadows that had curled around the stone and acted like tiny arms and wrapped around it's colorful center and created what looked like a shadowy cocoon. Normally he'd try and find a vet for a sick pet, but he was pretty sure that stones with magic leaking out of them didn't really qualify quite the same way. He was out of breath and seriously considering quitting smoking when he rounded the end of the block to see a strange group of people standing outside of his final destination. Harper skidded to a stop and reached his hand into his pocket to make sure Flo was still in there. His finger brushed the shadow engulfed stone, and he felt a weak little prod back from the wisp. Well, now was no time to be a coward. The boy squared his shoulders, flattened his long loppy ears against his head and marched forward to join the other people standing outside.

One of these people had fox ears and a tail, the other one seemed to be mostly snake. At least he wasn't the oddest one of the bunch.

Nephrite froze, her eyes wide with shock when she recognized the male voice filtering through from next door. This wasn't Athan.

'It's him!' she hissed at Mystic, keeping her telepathy as closely guarded as she possibly could. She slowly, very deliberately pulled out one of the pins which secured her bun—the ornament was surprisingly sturdy looking, and ended in a very sharp point.

Her gaze, however, was drawn by the back door. But, if even the shop wasn't a safe haven anymore, where else would she go?

Mystic's eyes went a bit wide at Nephrite's declaration, but he already knew it was true without having to see this man for himself. He could feel the subtle shift of Reyna's presence. It was as though the fire that burned in her own aura was slowly being stoked, and the man's was very similar to Athan's.

The difference was, this strange man had allowed the darkness to completely consume him. Athan's instincts were to fight it, and even though it looked like he was on the losing end of that battle, he still maintained some semblance of himself instead of becoming the hollow shell that Ezra appeared to be.

He glanced over at Nephrite and reached for her free hand. As softly as he could manage in what barely-there-telepathic speech he had left, he said, 'Don't run yet. It would just make you a target.'

Reyna, on the other hand, was staring him down with an immensely displeased look on her face. While yes, she was a demon, she still held a little bit of respect for certain living things and even possessed a few solid core values that would likely shock the pants off anyone who thought she was nothing but an ornery mean a**.

She was definitely that ornery mean a**, but while looking at Ezra and seeing what he had done not to just his own soul, but to Amethyst, she could tell he possessed zero respect for any living thing at all. And it had likely been a very long time since he had, if ever. She idly wondered if he knew that she could see the trails of darkness that bled over from her into him. Not all demons could see into a person's soul, but she could. It was one of her few abilities that always seemed to be right on cue.

The phone started ringing and she glanced towards it. Ezra was still giving her that creepy smile and hadn't made a move just yet. He was still busy gloating over how beautiful Amethyst was, but she had mostly tuned him out.

"Aren't you going to answer that?" he asked after it kept ringing.

Reyna glanced up and slowly reached for the phone without lifting her gaze off of him and answered it. "Hello?" she said. If it was Miranda calling back again she was going to rip her a new one.

At the same moment Merci stepped through the front door after unlocking it. s**t. Of course people would start showing up when weird things started happening to their Shadows. Damn it all to hell! Where is Athan?!

Athan appeared just outside of the front of the shop alongside Amon as they stepped through a portal together. The portal winked out of existence as soon as both men had exited.

The look of displeasure and concern upon Athan's face intensified as he took note of all the people standing outside of the shop. The feeling he had noticed of something being wrong had also increased immensely. If there were this many Shadows and guardians gathered around, something was definitely amiss.

"Amon," Athan said slowly as they walked down the sidewalk towards the front door, "I am certain we are walking into a trap. Be ready for just about everything, and it would probably be a good idea if you were prepared to throw open that shield spell we practiced."

He excused himself past those that were still lurking at the front door and stepped inside. He sidestepped Merci to put himself in between the red haired man and her since it appeared he was the source of the trouble. Darkness was rolling off of this man and his Shadow in a strange way that Athan was certain shouldn't have been possible.

"What exactly is going on here?" Athan said in a low, authoritative voice, "I don't take well to meddling in this shop."

Amon had instinctively been holding his breath upon stepping through the portal, and released it now in a quiet breath of relief to have made it through whole. He just really, really did not like these things. Athan's at least were mercifully quick to pop up and wink out of existence, giving him little to no time to wonder about what could possibly go wrong.

Speaking of . . . It very much seemed like Athan had been right with his feeling that there was trouble afoot. It was less the small crowd of fiends and their concerned looking guardians in front of the shop, most of which seemed to have arrived just now. But Nephrite was also here—he'd been aware of it the instant they'd arrived.

And Nephrite, he knew full well, had avoided the shop like the plague ever since Athan had made it abundantly clear to her that it was Not Okay To Poison People. Yet she still was here, and he could clearly sense through their bond that she was terrified—and definitely not of Athan this time around.

"Understood," he said upon Athan's warning and dipped his head with a serious expression. The spell he was confident he could pull off—the one lingering doubt he had was if it would be quick enough in a pinch. He kept in step with Athan's pace and breezed past the small crowd in his wake, though he did nod a quick greeting in passing at those he knew.

Inside, there seemed to be only a handful of people present but him and Athan: Merci, Reyna, and . . . another guardian and his fiend? He frowned. He'd never met the dude, he realized. But if Reyna's expression was anything to judge by, he was trouble. Massively so.

He too made his way past Merci, one hand pressing her shoulder for a moment in a reassuring manner. He knew Athan freaked her out. He scanned the room for Nephrite's whereabouts, but she was nowhere in sight. The back room then, he guessed, and wondered who else might be there.

***

Nephrite was slightly weirded out by the touch of Mystic's hand. It was warm. Like, real living person kind of warm. Weird, just weird. She was just about to remark on it, when all of a sudden her head snapped up and her eyes brightened as the bond to her guardian seemed to intensify all of a sudden. Which could only mean one thing: Amon was here! He had come for her after all.

Of course, she realized, this meant he was only going to get himself into deep trouble again, and she would likely end up going to have to stab that vile person to save his a**. Her grip around the pin tightened.
PostPosted: Thu Jul 21, 2016 6:17 pm

Merci easily moved aside for Athan and Amon when they brushed past her, confusion and no small amount of worry written on her features. Her green eyes moved up to Amon at his reassuring gesture with a tight smile and nod of greeting. She honestly just hoped that whatever was going on right now wasn't as bad as when the proprietors of Twilight Designs had been turned into stone. She cast a quick look behind her to gauge how Dio and Sully were doing when she spotted the odd rabbit eared boy. Huh, she didn't know who that was. Whoever the strange teenager was he seemed to have joined the little entourage behind her. Merci's foxlike ear was cocked back toward the shop to be sure she didn't miss any of the exchange that was occurring within.

Dio floated closer to his guardian and wrapped one of his arms over her shoulder so he could position his head on the other. He wanted to see what was happening. The pain was no longer unbearable, but he was still afraid. 'Everything will be alright now that the Athan man is here.' The fiend's mind voice was quiet and subdued, more like he was trying to make himself feel better than anyone else.

Vance crossed his arms and looked bored. He coiled his body so he could get comfortable as whatever was going on in there would likely be going on for awhile. The caution and general nervousness seemed not to affect the Medusa at all.

Sully drifted over next to Vance and remained silent. Her single blood red eye was locked on the doorway. Her calm outward demeanor belied the tense feeling that seemed to be coming from her through the empathetic powers all fiends had.

Merci faced forward again and she squared her shoulders. She'd had to shady a past to not pick up on the barely restrained violence that seemed to hum beneath the surface of the currently civil exchange. The half demon was kicking herself for not bringing both of her guns with her. One of the twin pistols was resting at the small of her back underneath the leather jacket she never left the house without.

Harper, meanwhile, was just bewildered. He didn't want to push through the mob of people to get into the store. He recognized Athan on his way by. He'd opened his mouth to say something, but stopped. There was something about this whole thing that made him decide that shutting up and staying back was the wiser course of action.

Ezra was so, utterly pleased with himself. He turned his back on Reyna to lounge casually against her desk to survey all the newcomers to the shop. This had been entirely too easy. He seemed to bask in pleasure at the audience that had gathered.

"Ahh. There's the man of the hour," he said in a jovial voice as he settled his gaze upon Athan, "It didn't take long for you to show up at all." He paused to look down at his watch and tapped the surface with one finger. "Right. On. Cue."

Athan's frown turned into an outright scowl of disdain. He did not like this man. He stared him down and for an instant his gaze settled upon Amethyst. A look of surprise crossed his face for a moment, then concern for the poor Shadow creature. He must not have been present when this man had obtained this stone.

"What have you done to her?" he asked between gritted teeth. He clenched his hands at his sides in an effort to resist the urge to begin spell casting. There were too many people present that could end up hurt in the cross fire.

Either this man did not know what Reyna was, or he had a death wish—as turning his back to her was an incredibly stupid idea. Or he was just utterly confident in his abilities. The thought made Amon's hair stand on end.

He did not like the tone of his remarks at all—he was too sure of himself. He had expected the fiends and their guardians and Athan himself to show up, wanted it even.

Trap, Amon realized with a jolt. Gods knew he had managed to walk right into one often enough to know what they felt like. He caught how Athan flexed his fingers and wondered about it for a moment. It was reminiscent of someone getting ready for a quickdraw. Then dawned on him: Athan couldn't anything much while he and Merci were still present.

He half turned towards the kitsune, trying to catch her attention with hsi gaze as he quietly nodded towards the shop door. Out, he motioned, but kept between her and the creepy redhead with the glasses. If Merci didn't leave the shop, he wouldn't either.

With no answer from the shop the cat girl made a noise of disgust and looked at the agony on Nell's face. "Its okay baby, there only a couple of blocks from here, we'll go to them. Gathering the fiend close, she could feel the fear and pain radiating along their bond, and noted that the girl was trembling.

Defensively drawing her shadows about herself, the shimmery orange fiend was lackluster, and the life that came with her every movement was stilled.

'Trivii...'

Standing she leveraged the girl with her, slung over her shoulder in a fireman's life as she pushed back towards the main entrance of the market. It took longer than she would have liked, a full fifteen minutes walking to bring the shop into view, but there was a tension in the air with the people around the shop and windows hinted that the place was getting a little crowded...

Glancing back at Nell she whispered, "I've got to put you down, hold onto me okay?"

Reaching out like someone expecting to be burned, the fearless fiend gently fisted her hand on the back of Trivii's day-pack.

Pushing up to the shop, through a few on lookers, she paused, the atmosphere could have been cut with a machete. The other few fiends.... An epidemic?

Reyna made a low growling noise when Ezra turned his back on her. She was sorely tempted to reach across her desk and throttle the jerk. Maybe rip him to shreds with her claws, even, but the look on Athan's face indicated that would be a very poor choice.

Instead, she clenched her hands against the wooden edge of her desk and did her best to resist the urge. s**t was obviously about to get real serious, and unfortunately for her she had misplaced the handy ring Athan had made her that allowed her to tolerate his spell casting.

She could feel a small thrill of panic from Mystic, but it was just barely there. It was though the threads of their bond had become frayed and was now down to its last strand. It was a strange feeling since he had been bonded to her for so long.

Her Shadow found it to be equally as strange. He paused just behind the door that led to the front room, unsure if he should enter or stay put. Nothing was happening just yet, but the tension was undeniably thick, and he could hear Athan's voice. He didn't at all sound pleased.

"If you're going to run, this would be the time to do it," he said softly as he glanced towards Nephrite, "They're all distracted."

Ezra was swiftly beginning to realize that Amethyst as his lure was incredibly effective. However, he hadn't quite anticipated Athan to have such a motley array of fascinating allies. There was the demoness behind him, the half-demon-darkness-thing in the room behind him lingering by the door, a fire elemental, a kitsune, a smattering of different people outside, and of course, Athan himself.

While he had certainly aged, he had to keep in mind that Athan alone was a formidable opponent, but there was still these little voices in the back of his head that urged him to keep going. They wanted him to take action

"I didn't do anything," he lied with a smile still upon his face, "She just grew suddenly. It was quite shocking, really."

Nephrite hesitated. This Ezra person scared her beyond belief. She had merely caught a glimpse of what he was capable of, but it had been enough for her to know she did not stand the slightest chance against this man.

Yet her guardian was here, and she knew should he get hurt (or worse!) there'd no doubt be repercussions for herself. But she knew she was no match for the redhead!

Eventually the young fiend heaved a sigh. She'd just have to trust that Reyna or Athan would manage to keep her idiot guardian safe from harm somehow. She nodded, and wrapped her much smaller hand tightly around Mystic's for a moment. 'Athan needs to know what happened to Hawk,' she said urgently.

She let go of the elder fiend's hand—was he still a fiend even?—and swiftly made for the back door, merging almost completely with the shadows in the hallway. But where would she go from there?

Nephrite was at a complete loss.

She had no friends, no other places to flee to.
PostPosted: Sun Aug 14, 2016 8:32 am

Merci was tense. The atmosphere in the room was stifling. All of the hair on the back of her neck stood on end and she felt her tail start to bristle. Dio was still draped over her shoulders and out of the corner of her eye she could see the black shadow staring at the... was that a fiend? Amon's movement did draw her attention and she saw him give the barest nod toward the door. It was the smarter choice. Dio was not the kind of creature that did well with conflict and her responsibility was to him. It rankled her to back out. She never had relied on magic much, but that didn't mean Merci didn't respect the hell out of it.

The teenager reached up and shoved that colorful cascade of hair over his face back behind his ear. It was rare to see both of Dio's eyes at the same time, and both burgundy orbs were locked on Amethyst. What had happened to her? Was the pain he felt because something like that would happen to him? The stars were whispering to him. He could hear them saying that she wasn't natural and that wouldn't happen to him. They also told him that he should be afraid. 'I am tired of being afraid...' He whispered.

The woman took a step back, she didn't want to vacate, but knew if spells started getting thrown around there was a very real possibility of getting caught up in one on accident. Merci looked over toward Reyna and gave her a quick nod of luck before she tried to back out of the door.

Dio released Merci and moved around to her side so she couldn't force him out of the shop. Whatever was happening, whatever this was, he needed to see it. The voices in his head whispered to him that they would tell him what was happening, but he needed to leave. The stars did not want him to stay.

The guardian frowned and she did the only thing she knew how to do to get Dio out of the line of fire. In the barest whisper she said, "There are wisps outside. Someone needs to protect them." Her fiend had always been fond of the little shadow stones. It might have been because he'd seen most of the current shadows when they had newly awakened. Either way Merci tried to use it to her advantage. She would not let Dio put himself in harms way for curiosity.

When he turned his head toward Merci the long hair fell back over his face. There was a wisp out there. It was very young, Dio had barely registered it before they'd moved into the shop. With a brief look toward the room he nodded and phased through the wall next to the door his Guardian was blocking.

With a quick glance at Amon that was half exasperation and half determination, Merci finally backed through the door into the small crowd of people. At least the pain seemed to have faded from her boy. One crisis always seemed to be followed by another, and the man inside seemed to fit that bill.

'She just grew suddenly.' Riiight. Dude was so obviously lying Amon would have been tempted to laugh out loud if there wasn't something so eerie about the redhead it made his skin crawl.

He did, however, smirk a little at the way Merci took advantage of Dio's protective streak to get him out of the potential line of fire. And Nephrite, he got the sense, was hightailing it as well. Smart girl. Though he was still wondering what she'd been doing here in the first place. Well. That made two out of three.

He breathed a small sigh of relief when Merci chose to make her exit as well. He had been anything but certain she actually would. Not everyone preferred to play it safe like he did, and her expression made it plain she wasn't one to back out of a fight easily. Married to a space pirate, he had to remind himself. Gods help him if he were ever up against her in a bar brawl, she'd probably mop the floor with him.

He followed suit, but—against better judgement—lingered at the door. No one had made their move yet, though at least Reyna looked ready to lunge and throttle that lying creeper from behind, just barely holding back.

It was a strange thought, but he found himself wondering if she'd be alright, and and hoped his backing out like this wasn't going to turn out to be a horrible mistake. He had suddenly remembered that thing how Athan's spellcasting had a tendency to make her physically sick.

A quick glance over his shoulder confirmed there were about half a dozen people—guardians and their shadows combined—lurking just outside the shop front, with more likely to arrive any minute now. Plus random passers-by who'd stopped to curiously gawk at the small group. Great. Just great.

Whatever was going to go down, he prayed it would be confined to the interior of the shop. If it didn't . . . Reyna and Athan could handle themselves. It was those people outside he ought to worry about, Amon realized with a bit of a sinking feeling. It was very likely none of them had ever taken classes in Defense Against the Dark Arts. Whereas he'd had . . . one?

He stepped out fully, and—after a moment of hesitation—began to cast the one spell he knew as swiftly as his utter lack of practice would allow. He prayed there was going to be no need for it, but it wouldn't hurt to have a magical shield at the ready. Just in case.
