The shadow creature was winding his way back up to hang on Algie's neck and shoulders. There was not much weight to him at all and his form did not feel like it was truly solid at all. Gloom chittered at hearing Algie got paid to teach, as if thinking. "Gloom teaches too," he said finally. "Could teach y'something if y'teach reading to Gloom."

Alg looked a bit amused at the situation, never having imagined something like this in a million years. Teaching reading to a shadow animal? "It's difficult. Do you like a challenge?" His brows lifted, "It may be a lot of work."

Gloom made something of a noise and then, very quietly asked, "... will it be a fun challenge?"

"Learning new things is always fun, isn't it?" Which of course was the bullshit line that all teachers automatically responded with.

"Yes," he responded because Gloom always had fun learning things about people. Though he was still a little suspiciousomething but it was pushed away in favor of new things. "Gloom will learn reading." Then because he seemed to finally realize it. "Y'didn't tell Gloom y'name."

"Algie.." Alg lifted a hand to Gloom because he was always polite. He offered a few fingers to shake a small paw. "Professor Algie Mixlin." The books were left alone, as it seemed this world's bibliophile as always had not much to offer him unless he was looking for it. "And perhaps you can teach me a bit of your magic so I don't hurt anyone with light anymore?"

Gloom touched his nose to the offered hand, sniffing and then pushing against it with his head before resting a paw on it. One day he would figure out this player character greeting, he would! Why was it even necessary? "Gloom can do that for Professor." His tail was back to swishing happily along the man's back. "Can y'teach here? Gloom can only show y'magics here." He shuffled a little. "Hurts over there."

"I could.." He scratched his head a bit. he of course could write out an alphabet and draw his own visual references but there were much better books for this in the regular Ashdown. "But I have better material in my store." Alg rubbed a hand along his stubbled jaw a moment, "How about we hold of on magic until you've learned the alphabet." What was the best way to explain that, "It's.... the secret cheat code."

" Secret cheat code?" Gloom sounded incredulous. "Y'not suppose to use those, y'have to do it the right way first." Except he totally wanted to know a secret cheat code. The shadow creature was looking around the basement and at the books before he was turning his focus back on Algie. "... y'sure y'can't do it here?"

Alg chuckled a bit at Gloom's clear knowledge of games, or at least video games, which solidified his suspicions about 'magic boxes'. "You're allowed to use this code. But you have to memorize it. I can write it down for you- to start," The professor moved to the stairs, which creaked when he brushed one off and sat down. His notebook was flipped to a blank page and he began to write the alphabet, "if you can memorize it you'll be able to learn reading much faster and easier. This is step one."

"This is called ... alphabet?" Gloom peered over Algie's shoulder, hanging off until he ended up sliding forward and the professor's lap was his new spot. "Y'need this for reading?" White eyes were peering at the symbols the professor was writing down. "Gloom does stuff like this." These looked much smaller.

"You use symbols?" He tapped the A, but readjusted when Gloom ended up in his lap. His first instinct when having a furry creature in his lap was to pet it, even getting so far as a hovering hand, before he questioned if he was even allowed.

Gloom peered carefully at the A before he realized a hand was hovering over him. Which lead to him butting into it with his head because, hello, this was his favorite bit of dealing with player characters. All the pets he could stand. "Gloom uses symbols for magics. Can y'use these for magics?"

Alg's hand dropped to the creature's head, feeling a tension and resistance behind the shadows, a subtle thrum of warmth, but it certainly didn't feel like a normal animal. He also noted that Gloom didn't weigh very much sitting on his lap. "Well yes they could, I did it once by chance-" Read spells from the book in the mansion, "-You could write spells down, to cement them, keep track of them so you don't forget." Alg tapped the A again, "Each symbol, it's called a letter, each letter makes a sound. You string them together and make words."

"What's this letter then?" Gloom inquired, pushing into the hand that was on him for more pets. The shadow marten would likely do just about anything for more pets (and who knew what he would do if there were tastykakes involved). "Gloom just makes them," he said suddenly, as if realizing he had not thought about part of what Algie had said. In the air, for a moment, shadows coalesced and took the shape of an A. "See?"
