The lack of animal life made the town eerily quiet. The chirp and rustle of birds or the occasional far-off bark of a dog were part of what made up the normal, barely noticed backdrop of sound in any inhabited town. Their absence would have been unsettling enough on its own, but combined with the stench and sight of death poorly hidden under the street and that high, faint whine, the quiet was putting Jordan on edge. "I wonder if it's the pitch," he said, glancing at Candace with a thoughtful frown. "It's very faint. Hard to hear."

The dead rat that she had spotted was massive. More alarmingly, it bore no visible marks of whatever had killed it. Jordan frowned and took a few steps towards the alley in which the thing lay beside a dumpster, steeling himself against the sight and smell with the intention of getting a better look. Then something crunched under his foot and he jumped back, looking down. "What - "

Cockroaches - a small dark mass of them, flowing out of a crack in one of the buildings and scuttling with a single-minded determination for somewhere else. "Roaches," Jordan said, and pointed them out. "What are they trying to get away from?"

Stay calm, Ferros said.

Right. Jordan approached the building that the roaches had been fleeing and tried to peer in through the dust-grimed window. "Can't see anything," he reported. "Too much dust. It looks empty in there, though." He backed up and turned around, looking towards the sewer grate again. "Everything dog-sized and smaller," he said, ticking off points on his fingers. "But not insects. That's pretty specific. No human deaths - that we know of, anyway," he amended. "Carcasses mostly left out of sight, or there'd have been more general alarm. Come to think of it, it looks like they've been dumped in an area where humans are less likely to care or report the bodies. Whether that's coincidence or deliberate planning ... " He trailed off, then shook his head. "Impossible to say, stick to the observable facts. Right. Roaches fleeing from unknown location and with no visible cause, and a high-pitched whining sound, difficult to hear, no apparent source."

He looked to Candace, then to Robert. "Am I leaving anything out? Do you guys recognize any kind of pattern? I've never heard of anything like this, so I can't offer any theories."

"I'm trying.." Candace frowned. Even Robert heard it. Why could the men hear it but not her? Was it out of the pitch range a woman could hear or something? "They make cell phone ringtones that can't be heard above a certain age...and you are both younger than me." But only by like..two years. It wasn't the train, and she'd like to think she wasn't so old she couldn't hear the same thing Jordan and Robert were hearing...but what the hell. Candace hummed and followed Jordan to the rat carcass, managing to step on a couple of the roaches as they fled the building beside the alley. Gross, gross, gross, gross, gross!

"I don't see any pets yet though, only the corpses of street vermin. I doubt people would keep rats that big as a pet. The only time I've ever seen roaches flee from something all in a group was being chased or when someone turns a light on." She looked down at the sewer grate and the building Jordan had been looking into. "Those're the first bugs I've seen this entire time, what about you?" And then Jordan mentioned the high-pitched whining sound.

Something seemed to click in Candace's head. She looked up, eyes wide. "Jordan, Robert. Have you two ever heard a dog whistle?" No, it was not completely an insult. "You can't hear the pitch but you can hear the like..wheezing keen of it being blown. You hear a sound but not the sound. What you two are hearing could maybe be something like that. I mean, think about it. All these animals gathered in one place, and that sound..you even heard it as soon as we got here. Did it seem to grow louder as we got closer or anything?" Candace nudged the rat corpse with her foot. "Possibly disgusting suggestion time. We should keep investigating...as in look for a body trail or try to find the source."

They did have two options, after all. Inside the building the roaches had fled from or...in the sewer.

Oh god please not the sewer she hoped they didn't pick the sewer.

The whistling noise was actually starting to give him a headache. He listened as carefully as he could to Jordan's observations, and sighed in relief. "No, boss, you hit everything we got so far. I gotta admit though, Candace is right. This thing kind of does feel like a dog whistle. It's getting into my ********' head, and if I hear it any longer I swear I'm gonna start pulling my hair out." He tried blocking one ear with a finger, but it did little to no good stopping what he heard.

"And it makes sense, I guess. Like a pied piper or some s**t, using that sound to call all the animals and then killing them. Don't know why, though - not that I really care. All them ******** monsters are assholes as far as I'm concerned, they probably get off on it."

"That makes a lot of sense," Jordan agreed. "I can't tell where it is, and it hasn't seemed to get louder or softer. Considering that there are a lot of carcasses in the sewer - maybe it's coming from underground."

He rubbed the band of Ferros's ring with his thumb, thinking about what they'd found and what they hadn't found. Candace's suggestion was a good one, but it also bore a certain amount of risk. "I think we should head back towards the portal," he said. "Whatever has done this has done a lot of killing, and without any idea of what we'd be up against, I'm not too fond of the idea of running into it unexpectedly. It could be that we'd handle it easily, but it's just as likely that we couldn't. We've gathered some good data already, and I'm inclined to say we should get our findings back home. We may be able to make more observations if we take a roundabout route back, as well."

Ferros grumbled wordlessly, and Jordan glanced down at the ring. "Yeah, I know, you're hungry."

((I WANNA HEAR THE SOOOOOOOOOOOUNNNNNND

Edit: ):
Candace still found it strange the two of them could hear it and not her. She wanted to hear it. Did it really sound how they said it did? They both agreed she made a good point. "Underground, huh?" She cringed, looking down at the newest sewer opening. She really didn't want to go down there with that smell, but if they didn't go soon then whatever it was that was in there could move on and then the problem would just start up all over again..! Candace frowned, giving a quiet nod of agreement to what Jordan was saying. It sounded exactly like what she'd told Molly and Deryk. He had a point.

"True enough." Candace murmured, glancing toward another pigeon carcass and cringing. Gross. "Here's hoping little Susie's puppy is okay, hm?" Maybe if they were really lucky only the vermin was killed and the proper pets were still okay. That's if they were really, really lucky. Candace wasn't going to put any money on it though.

"Alright then. I'm cool with getting out of here and actually..breathing in fresh air that doesn't reek of sewage and death." She looked Robert's way. He was the leader this time, not her. "Your call, Robert."
PostPosted: Thu Jan 26, 2012 5:03 pm

Robert fell comfortably into place when Jordan started to decide what they should do. He nodded, shifting his pack and even going so far as to take a step forward to head out, when Candace stopped him.

The words your call made Robert feel unnerved. It was his mission, but he was ready to follow Jordan's call in an instant. The amount of trust he'd poured into the man was immense, but to be reminded that he was supposed to be in charge of the mission just jarred him. He looked at Candace nervously, before darting his eyes back to the floor.

"Right. Uh. My call. So.. I say we uh.. head back to the portal." He nodded respectfully at Jordan, and took the lead. But now he just felt weird about it.

"We can hope," Jordan replied to Candace, but he was of the opinion that the chance of pets having escaped the animal massacre was pretty low. Candace knew that, he was sure; he didn't need to say so and make everyone uncomfortable.

Robert's decision, right; Jordan looked to Robert, feeling a faint twinge of guilt. It had become habit long since for Robert to listen to him, but technically he was the low-ranking one here, and it was Robert's mission. He needed to remember to give his friend more credit and respect. Robert might keep up a facade of goofy idiocy, but he had more brains than most people gave him credit for.

Jordan wasn't quite sure if it made him feel better or worse to see his moment of startled confusion reflected on Robert's face. They'd both fallen into the familiar roles, at least.

When Robert agreed, he nodded and followed silently. He'd gained a lot to think about from this mission, both from the mission itself and from their interactions as a team.

That was strange. Candace watched Robert's reaction to her telling him their next move was 'his call'. Was he alright? He even shot her that nervous look, like he was unsure of what to do. Candace looked between him and Jordan, trying to figure out what the problem was. She'd probably be able to figure it out a bit better if she knew Robert for more than the fact that he was a large oaf who hated her because he couldn't let go of a grudge for a situation that didn't even involve him. Probably...would he answer if he asked?

"Alright then." Candace said calmly, trying to hide her curiosity. This was strange behavior for Robert judging from how Candace was used to seeing him. "Time to go home~." She said in a sing song voice, not disliking the decision to move on. It smelled so bad in here if she had to stay any longer she'd be sick.

Though there was something she was still wondering..

Candace hummed quietly and hurried to walk alongside Robert, putting a hand on his shoulder. "Hey, Robert?" She asked quietly, tilting her head to one side. "Not that I'm complaining but...why me? I'd expect you to bring Petra, or Madison, or hell Jerry before you'd bring me along." She was genuinely surprised! Did something happen that she missed?

The overall agreement of their next move relaxed Robert's posture, and he slowed down, until he was between his two teammates, heading back for the portal. He felt the hand on his shoulder, and turned his head down to look at Candace with mild curiosity. Whatever question he was expecting (and there was none in his empty head at the moment), was certainly not what he got from her. His blank stare turned dark, and troubled.

"I thought about it." He admitted as his eyes returned forward, glaring unseeing towards the direction they walked. "But I needed, just this once, for this not to ******** up. I'm not saying Petra or Maddie woulda ******** things up," He carefully left Jerry's name out of that sentence, "But I had been pretty confident in my ability to ruin everything." His eyes, just a little distant, dropped to look down at Candace. "You uh. You get s**t done right. You're really good at all this s**t. I needed someone I could trust would overcompensate to make up for what I lack."

Those were some of the biggest words Robert had ever used in his life. He had obviously given the choice a great deal of thought. All he'd said could even be considered a compliment..

"Plus you don't make me smile or feel good. So it's easier to concentrate."

And then he had to go and ruin it.
PostPosted: Fri Jan 27, 2012 3:24 am

Candace looked very surprised by Robert's answer, and for once she didn't even make an effort to hide this fact. What did he mean 'just this once'? Did he ******** up things more than she thought? Had this not actually been a very serious answer for Robert to give she may have actually told him that yes, he does ruin everything. In fact, Robert was the king of ruination. Robert of Ruinsville. Robert, duke of Ruintown. King Robert the first of the kingdom of Ruinlot. But no, he was paying her an honest compliment and being what she felt was uncharacteristically serious for Robert. "Oh, I see." Was all she could sat at first, looking ahead of them as they walked. He really noticed all that, huh? He thought she was good at this?

...Wait, what?

She turned a slow, expressionless stare toward Robert. She didn't what? Oh, Robert...now you've gone and hit her pride. She refused to accept this. "I don't blame you." Candace began with a cocky grin while casually folding her arms behind her head as they walked. "Petra's a pretty nice distraction. Good kisser, too. No wonder she makes you smile~." Two could play the ruin game.

But back to business.

"Look, Robert...while we don't exactly see eye to eye I will say this." She dropped an arm from her head to push gently at his shoulder. Candace was well aware it was like pushing a boulder. "You're an idiot. Why this time? Because you're being so down on yourself. Where's the Robert I've been seeing these past...seven, eight months? Confident in everything he does and not giving a s**t what anyone said? Because if they pissed him off he'd punch them out?" She gave a short chuckle. "There's got to be something useful you're good at. And besides...do you honestly think they would keep you around if they didn't see something in you? There's only so much amusement one moron can bring before he's all used up. We were recruited to be hunters because they saw potential in us. Yes, Robert...even you." She stopped just outside the portal doorway back to Deus, turning to Robert with a faint frown.

"So cut out this woe is me I ruin everything s**t. It's weird. It's not you, the arrogant cocky a*****e who pummeled me into the ground with barely any effort." Candace gestured toward the portal with one arm. "After you, Robert."

Jordan fell back slightly, listening to the conversation without comment, though he smiled slightly when Robert managed to bomb the end of the compliment with a minor insult. Good job, bro.

When Candace had finished speaking, he said, "She has a good point." Agreeing with Candace - well, not totally bizarre, but perhaps not frequent. "I hate seeing you dragging like this. Taking things seriously is good, yeah - but you haven't been yourself."
PostPosted: Sun Jan 29, 2012 12:38 am

Robert couldn't decide between the emotions warring inside of him. At once, he both felt enraged and aroused that Candace was talking about kissing his girl, and he couldn't decide which he felt more. So he teetered between a leery grin, and an angry frown. Repeatedly. Goddamnit, Candace.

"I know what potential Deus saw in me." He answered simply, once he'd given up on trying to decide whether to deck her or hit on her and just gave up. "And I know I can live up to that. I'm here because I'm going to be someone's meat shield one day. Whose? The ******** if I know, but if it's Petra's, I'd die happy. If it's like, Dr. H? I would be so pissed."

He laughed loud and clear, a weight lifting off his shoulders at the feeling. He quieted down when Jordan chimed in, and rubbed his neck with the back of one hand. "Christ, guys. Stop worrying about me so much." He turned to look at them as he walked through the portal, an oddly knowing and amused look on his face. "It's bad for your health."

"Robert. You know me. It's what I do." Jordan's smile was softer than the usual confident grin he showed everyone, fond and amused. The return of humor in Robert's eyes and the sudden, familiar laugh eased a lot of the worry he'd been keeping quiet. He stood aside, nodding for Candace to follow Robert through the portal.
PostPosted: Sun Jan 29, 2012 3:02 pm

Candace forced back a smug grin upon seeing the conflict on Robert's face. It would be counter productive to making him stop being an emo little s**t. "Ah, but Robert that is not a Life hunter's duty. While I wouldn't put it past H to put you in life because he thought it'd be funny," Like with Before, for example. "You must show some promise for him not to have gotten bored with you yet. You'll figure it out soon, I'm sure. Just as soon as you stop acting like a highschooler who thinks being emo is cool." Candace was glad Jordan agreed with her, even if how she put things wasn't exactly friendly or sugarcoated. There was no use half-assing it or being nice; it wouldn't be fair to him if they tiptoed around the issue. He deserved honesty.

She tried not to roll her eyes when he told her not to worry, merely watching him step through the portal. "Yes, because being a Hunter is already a very healthy lifestyle." Candace chuckled, following after Robert into the portal and waving for Jordan to come along.

Jordan took one more look back at the city. Then he followed the other two back through the portal.
