User ImageRizeh had never heard the poem before but he instantly decided that it was the loveliest poem that he had ever heard. Though mainly that was because it was recited in such a stunning voice. While the Madam read, Rizeh simply stared, enraptured by every soft change of sound and every little touch of emotion. When the professor claimed that it was anything less than perfect Rizeh was a little confused. Yes, he had heard people read with more "effective pauses" and such but they never could have produced the pure quality that her voice held. The man must have been going deaf he decided. It was hard for him not to say anything to the man but again, he held his tongue. Why is it that everyone seemed to tell the Madam that she had some sort of fault? First the painting and now her reading. It wasn't his place to say anything though so he remained quiet, simply admiring when the Madam read, though always keeping his eyes down and hidden. Somehow, he was a little sad when the lesson ended but he quickly came to attention, bowing to the Professor before following closely behind the Madam, determined not to let anything slip his attention this time.

As the young noble went to leave, a section of books caught her eye and single book in particular. It was the romance section and the book was Wuthering Heights, a novel she had read several times. However, Mother had banned her from reading such books. 'I don't want you filling your little head with silly nonsense like love.' As tempting as it was to secretly take the book, her new bodyguard was sure to notice. Instead, she walked out into the hallway and towards the main dining hall. Earlier, her mother had mentioned that Sir Winston and his son. The very thought was unpleasant. Most of the men her mother selected were the most boring men in the world. They didn't care about anything other than money and looks. But, Mother said that was all any man cared about.
Atalaya glanced over her shoulder to insure that Rizeh hadn't been lost and indeed he hadn't. The girl, feeling guilty for just leading him about like a dog, decided to say, "My mother will be expecting me in the main dining hall. It's just this way." Per usual, her voice was soft and quiet and her eyes never met his.
The dining hall way large with a tall ceiling. In the center of the room was a long dark table at which Lady Pearl, an older gentlemen, and a young blond man sat. Atalaya curtsied as she entered then made her way over to the group.
"Ah, Atalaya. You know Sir Winston and this is his son, Fredrick." Lady Pearl said in her politest of tones. Atalaya simply nodded in their direction then took her seat.
Sir Winston regarded the girl with a small smile before turning his attention back to the previous conversation.
"As I was saying, my son here is an excellent sword fighter, trained by the very best."
"How impressive." Lady Pearl commented.

User ImageFredrick held himself a little straighter when Atalaya entered the room and smirked as his father started showing him off. He would be the one to win Atalaya's heart, that much was certain to him. He figured that he would let his father sweet talk the Lady Pearl while he turned his attention to Atalaya. "Afternoon miss Atalaya." he said, with his most charming smile. "How are you this fine day? I trust your lessons went well? You always seemed to me a very bright, lovely young lady. I'm sure that you do excellent in all of your subjects. I myself excelled at playing violin along with my sword fighting skills." The last part was a bit of a lie but it was always a good idea to make yourself seem well rounded. "Books were never my niche though. I always thought them to be so dull. Sword fighting, now that is where the action is! If you would like, I could give you a demonstration later." He was entirely at ease and more than happy to show off any skill of his to Atalaya. Most girls fell over their heels for him and he would make sure that Atalaya was no different. She would love him, simple as that.

User ImageRizeh noticed the Madam's glance at a few of the books on the way out of the study and his eyes followed hers to what he thought was a section of romance novels. He himself had never really read them but they always seemed to be a favorite among ladies and he thought for a moment that she was going to get one but instead she just walked by. Odd.. Was she not allowed to read either? He followed silently though, only nodding with his head still bowed when the Madam said that they were to be going to the main dinning hall. If he was correct holders they were to be meeting the Sir Winston and his son, who was probably a suitor for the young Madam. However, once he entered the room, he found that he already didn't like the suitor. There was simply something about him that set Rizeh on edge.. It certainly wasn't his choice on who the Lady chose as suitors for her daughter though. So instead of taking Atalaya and walking straight in the other direction as he wanted, he followed silently once more. He simply stood a few feet back from where the Madam sat, far enough to give her adequate space but close enough to quickly close the distance if needed, watching Mr. Winston very carefully.

Fredrick suddenly felt eyes on him and he glanced quickly behind Atalaya. There.. that's who had been staring at him.. There was a pathetic looking boy wearing the uniform of Atalaya's house. "Please do tell me that pathetic thing isn't your guard Miss Atalaya?" he said, a little incredulous. If the Lady really wished to protect her daughter then surely she could have done better than that. He didn't appreciate the fact that he felt he was being stared at by the boy either.. Perhaps he would have to teach the little commoner, for that's surely all he was with his pathetic appearance, a leasson on looking at nobles later. As far as Fredrick was concerned, a servant of any level, or most commoners for that matter, were no better than slaves, and he made sure to convey that in the quick glare that he sent the boy.

Rizeh averted his eyes immediately when Mr. Winston looked up at him, even though his eye were hidden. There was no reason to give the noble any reason to threaten his job by accusing him of staring. The noble's words struck athim harshly though and he certainly didn't miss the meaning behind the glare. What had he done to so terribly upset the noble already? There was no way that he could have known for certain that Rizeh had been looking at him in the first place.. Besides, wasn't that his job? His first thought from the threatening glare was that of his family and he feared for them briefly. That was the thing that Rizeh hated most about many nobles and royals, they all saw people lower than them as nothing more than pieces of trash.. more specifically, pieces of trash that they could take out their anger on... The noble couldn't prove anything though... He couldn't prove a thing.. Still, Rizeh bowed his sad a little deeper, afraid now to do more than glance up and look around the noble. Feared, if only for the sake of his family. The noble boy with his sword fighting did not scare him. Until he proved himself in battle anyways, Mr. Winston held no merit in Rizeh's eyes. Until then, Rizeh was perfectly capable of defending himself with his fists or his own sword.

The moment her mother turned away, the suitor began to talk and he didn't stop. He even asked a few questions but didn't leave her a single moment for her to respond. After a moment, Fredrick's attention turned to Atalaya's bodyguard. The young lady looked behind to confirm that Rizeh was indeed still behind her.
"Yes, this is my new bodyguard, Rizeh." Atalaya responded quietly. By his town, it was evident that he was no impressed. For some reason, she felt the need to defend him. "He came highly recommended from the captain of the guards."
Lady Pearl and Sir Winston chatted endlessly about their children and how fantastic they are. The lady had considerably less to say than Sir Winston.

User ImageFredrick scoffed at the new "guard". "Honestly, you could have done much better. I don't care what that mad old man says, this thing is pathetic. If the old man recomemded this then he must need some glasses and to be fired." he said with a tone full of condescending contempt. How did that pathetic thing end up as Atalaya's guard? It was simply beyond him. Turning his attention back to Atalaya after a last quick glare at the guard, he smiled charmingly. "So what say you to a demonstration later? We could set up a time if there is not enough left of this day. I would certainly like to see you again miss Atalaya.. But enough of myself. Please, do tell me more about yourself. You intrigue me yet I know nothing." Of course, his father's praise in the background would still provide even more about him and he already knew everything he could about Atalaya. It was just proper to ask and let her speak, especially sends he hadn't done such a good job of that earlier.. what with the distraction of the guard.. Commoners simply annoyed him to no end and he really wished that they would all just drop dead... They were nigh useless anyways. The only thing that they were useful for was making a few things, taking more than they made, and then breeding like mice.

Rizeh simply remained in his silent stance with his head bowed as the noble boy insulted hm. Honestly, he had heard worse. Much worse things were said to him on almost a day to day basis. Yes, an I would like to never see you again. he thought in almost disgust, but that certainly wasn't like him. Rizeh just didn't like this Mr. Winston at all.. This noble was quite wrapped up in himself wasn't he?

This Fredrick is very full of himself, isn't he?' Atalaya thought as he degraded her new bodyguard. Again, the conversation steered towards her. This time, however, he actually awaited a response.
Atalaya thought a moment, trying to think of something to tell the anxious suitor. But despite her best efforts she could think of anything good about her. Searching desperately for any topic of conversation, Atalaya said, "I..uh..I'm reading poetry in my class. Do you like poetry?" Just as mother advised, the young noble made the conversation about him again.
'Best not to talk about yourself." Her mother would say. "There's not much to say."

User ImageFredrick nearly groaned in disappointment. Poetry? He never understood the stuff and had always disliked it. As far as he was concerned, poetry was just what crazy people did in their spare time; it sounded just the same as their ramblings. "Ah yes, poetry. I'll bet you read it wonderfully, you seem like one with the heart for that." he said brightly. You were supposed to read it weren't you? Fredrick hadn't payed any attention to that part of his studies. He never even understood why he had to understand it, it was something that girls were supposed to do. Sword fighting, strategics, war history, that's what he enjoyed most. However, if one wished to woo a girl, then they should always act interested in them and everything they did. So if he had to like poetry to get Atalaya, then he would. He thought quickly of anything he might have remembered from poetry and came up with the best question that he could. "Who are you reading from? Perhaps I have heard their work before." Always try to steer the conversation towards them, women liked to talk about themselves.

Again, Atalaya searched for what to say. Did she answer? Was it improper? What would be best to say? Why did he keep turning the conversation??
Luckily, Lord Winston and Lady Pearl's attention turned to the pair before she could respond.
"Your father tells me you're a talented swordsman, Fredrick. Won't you please give us a demonstration?" Lady Pearl said, her voice oozing with pleasantness.
Sir Winston nodded. "Fredrick is the top of his class in swordsman. Never once defeated!" The old man bragged.
Pearl pointed at a servant girl. "You! Fetch us a sword." The girl nodded and disappeared from the room.

User ImageFredrick was glad when suddenly Lady Pearl interrupted him and Atalaya for he was sure to have not known about a thing she said. He hated feeling stupid, and especially in comparison to a girl.. He made a note to take up his poetry studies again. A small smile crept onto his face as Lady Pearl brought up his swordfighting skills again and then even asked for a demonstration. Finally! Now he could really show Atalaya his strength and what he could do. "Of course Lady, I would be delighted to show you." he said with just as much pleasantness though he thought that his sounded much more charming. He didn't care for Lady Pearl but he supposed that he would have to put up with her. After all, he planned on her being his mother-in-law. "If I may my Lady, who am I to spar with?" he asked with the same charm.

A sudden thought struck him and he glanced at Atalaya's guard quickly. Perhaps if he got into a spar with him, he could.make it look as though the boy was trying to kill him and then, in self defense, kill the boy. It sounded like a fine plan to him. If bot kill him, then perhaps he could just humiliate him. Yes.. that would certainly also be a good form of punishment. He supposed thatvhe really shouldn't kill him.. Or at least not in front of Atalaya. No, this time he would just badly humiliate him. Maybe if he beat him bad enough, Lady Pearl would see her mistake and fire him and get Atalaya someone who could actually protect her. Now that would be a good punishment. The poor little commoner was probably living off of this job so he would humiliate, punish, and possibly kill him all in one shot. Perfect. Hopefully the Lady would let them spar.. If not, then he would just have to settle for some other form of punishment. Maybe he could kill the guard later.

Rizeh stiffened, a barely perceptible movement, at the mention of a "demonstration" from Mr. Winston in his swordfighting. The thought of letting the noble have a sword making him instantly uneasy. The glance that he felt directed at him only proved to heighten that uneasiness into a slight, but real worry. He could guess somewhat at noble's plans and knee even before Mr. Winston asked his question, that he planned on sparing with him. That would be fine if it weren't for the fact that Rizeh wasn't sure if he wouldn't beat him. Beating the noble boy though, would mean extremely bad things for him. He had a felling that Mr. Winston was not used to, nor did he take well to, loosing. He sent up a silent prayer that the Lady Pearl would have someone else that the noble could spar with..

Lady Pearl, seeming to read the young lord's mind, pointed her long, boney finger at Rizeh.
"You. You have come so highly recommended and yet I haven't see you do anything." the Lady looked to Fredrick. "Is this a suitable opponent?"
Atalaya grew a little paler. Fredrick seemed so delighted with the idea of fighting someone else and she couldn't help but think that his intentions might be less than honorable. However, the noble said nothing. It was not her place to speak up.
"Women should be seen, not heard." Lady pearl would say. "And perhaps in your case, neither."
The servant returned moments later, carrying a sword, which she offered to Fredrick.

User ImageFredrick barely contained the smile that threatened as the Lady pointed to Atalaya's guard. "That, my Lady, will remain to be seen. He certainly doesn't look as if he will, but I trust your judgment." Of course he knew that the guard wasn't really going to be a worthy opponent but he had a lesson to teach the commoner. As the servant girl returned with the sword, he gave her his charming smile and accepted it graciously. It was a pretty little thing and, though not his usual heavy blade, would work fine. He tested the weight just to make sure and, finding it satisfactory, finally allowed a hint of the smile to crawl across his features. "Where shall we be sparring?" he asked sweetly, his voice probably a little too excited. This was surely going to be fun."Oh this is all of course if you haven't any objections. I'm sure that there are other partners that the Lady could find for me." he said to the guard, his voice almost challenging.

User Image
It would seem that Rizeh's prayer was to go unanswered as the Lady pointed at him. Now what was he supposed to do? He couldn't refuse no, that was out of the question. But what if he were to actually beat the noble boy? Perhaps he shouldn't even try to? If he lost though, it may just mean his new job.. No, that also wasn't an option. The thought of losing this job just to please some this noble boy was unthinkable. He had promised to take care of his family and this was his last real chance and he would not throw away this opportunity for such a stupid reason. Rizeh would fight with his full strength; for his family. Even if it meant Mr. Winston would punish him for it. Resolving himself, Rizeh took a deep breath and looked up very slightly in acknowledgment. "Of course. I would be honored." he said with a stronger voice than usual. Then again, he didn't imagine that he had a choice anyways. The slowly spreading grin on the young noble's face sent a quick chill up his spine.

Lady Pearl smiled as she directed the party outside, onto the balcony over looking the gardens, for the duel. This would be the true test of her daughter's new bodyguard.

Atalaya walked silently outside. Though she kept quiet, inwardly, the noble couldn't stop her worrying. Fighting was never something she enjoyed watching others do. The sounds of flesh hitting flesh or a blade piercing skin was worse than nails on a chalkboard to the girl. (Not to mention she owed this quite a lot for not destroying her precious paintings.
Finally, the brunette decided she couldn't just watch this happen. But what could she do about it? Surely mother wouldn't appreciate her speaking out of turn, since it wasn't her place. Just then, an idea occurred to her.
Atalaya began fanning herself, gently at first, making a show of it.
Lady Pearl turned to her, having noticed the obnoxious behavior, and whispered "Would you stop that infernal waving? It is most unladylike."
Atalaya nodded, replying. "I'm terribly sorry mother, you must forgive me. I'm having a hard time breathing."
"Stop complaining!" Her mother retorted. Suddenly, The young noble girl feigned fainting, dropping to the floor.
"Oh my goodness!!" Pearl cried, leaping to her feet. "Atalaya! Atalaya, child, get up at once! This is most improper.
But the girl continued her performance, faking unconsciousness on the floor of the balcony.

User ImageRizeh followed just as silent as Atalaya, thinking about this duel that he was about to have. He still didn't know what exactly to do and it would seem that the Madam was perhaps a little discomforted by it as well, though he couldn't be sure. He thought that maybe she would be, as she seemed like one to not like violence, for she seemed too gentle. He had mostly hardened himself to it by then though, commoners saw violence everyday. Be it inflicted upon each other or by those of higher status who simply found it amusing to beat someone they thought beneath them. He became a little concerned though, seeing Atalaya begin to fan herself as though she were having trouble with something but his worry turned to an almost panic when she fainted. "Madam!" he cried out, rushing to her side. Not thinking, he put his hand to her wrist, checking for a pulse. Giving a slightly shaking sigh of relief to find it still there, he looked more closely at her to see it there was anything wrong and found something that shocked him quite a bit. He had seen many people that had simply fallen over as she had, passed out from exhaustion and other worse things, but she didn't look as they did. She was feigning it. Why though? Did the duel really worry her that much? He couldn't figure out why she would be faking such a thing but he wasn't about to to tell the Lady that she was. Suddenly, there was a stinging pain across the side of his face and he was shocked to see that Mr. Winston had struck him. He was sure that it would have a red mark for a while from the force of the hit. "What do you think you're doing?! Guard or no, you are a commoner, so don't you ever touch Atalaya again." he said, his voice tight with anger. Rizeh froze. Was he not supposed to touch her? He didn't know, he thought that the small touch had been okay. Perhaps Mr. Winston was overreacting? "I'm sorry sir, I was only doing what I thought my job should have entailed. I didn't know if perhaps she had been struck by something." he said a little quietly. Hopefully the Lady wouldn't see what he had done as wrong..
