Log Entry #001A
Subject: 005

Well it seems as though 005's database has crashed and her files along with it. I managed to salvage her photos and her statistcal information, but the rest is lost in the world of cyberspace. This system is not supposed to crash, so I didn't back anything up. Tells you what I get for trusting government funded equipment...

Anyways, with the loss of my previous logs and other documents, I decided that I would start over with the numbers and just add the Alpha symbol after the log number to keep it diferenciated from the previous files should I somehow manage to retrieve them.

In other news, 005 is growing up. She is to celebrate her entering teenhood with the other numbers 001-006. With her aging in years, the appropriate physical changes have begun to take place as well. I daresay it won't be long before she "enter's womanhood" as the old Terran's believed once a female's monthly cycle begins. It should be most interesting to see how these naive beings deal with the facts of life as they race towards the fateful day of testing.

Dear Journal,

001-006, including myself, of course, are to enter teenhood within the next day. It sounds exticing to finally be closer to being tested, but it makes me nervous as well. I don't know if I'll miss having the freedom of being able to run around like I did before, but only time will tell.

There are other changes with all of us reaching this age too. One of them is that the boys are starting to look cute. This of course does not help me any and I become as silent as a clam whenever I'm around them 'cause I'm afraid of embarassing myself. Its almost as bad as when I first met all of them. Maybe something will happen to let me not be so shy, but we'll see.

Aside from the boys though, we girls have changed as well. My body is becoming more grown-up *blush* and the matrons have started giving me a bodice to wear underneath my dress. Its itchy and makes it a little harder for me to move. But apparently all girls have to wear these someday, so I guess I shouldn't complain.

Umm...something just happened, and I think I need to go get some help. I'll finish this entry later.

That's Supposed to Happen?
As Selma had been sitting in her chair, writing, she had noticed a small red patch start to appear on her new white dress, in the most peculiur place. Her first thought was how much trouble she was going to get in for soiling her prestine garment that she had been instructed to keep clean. Seconds after that though, she realized that the patch looked remarably like...

"No," she said softly trying to convince herself that she was seeing things. The redhead closed her eyes and took a deep breath before looking down again. The spot was still there, and if she was not mistaken, Selma thought it appeared larger. She could also not deny the feeling of something wet...down there. Fear welled up inside her, as she didn't know what was going on and she struggled to calm herself and rationalize. With a hasty scribble, she wrote a last line in her journal and got up from her chair, having decided that she better go see the matron in change of healing.

Just as she was about to exit the room, her own matron came in, looking for her to let her know that the others were outside together, spending some time still "being children" before the ceremony and they offically became teens. At the sight of the matron, Selma broke down, crying, and incohearantly tried to tell the matron what was going on. A quick examination by the older woman allowed her to see the red stain on Selma's clothing and she actually smiled slightly and clucked her tounge.

Finding this an unexpected reaction, Selma's tears slowed as she looked at the matron curiously. The matron helped Selma to her feet before leading her to a cupboard in the hallway that she hadn't been allowed to get into before. Inside were various assortments of linens, some of them simple woolen strips. She took three of the strips from the cupboard before handing them to Selma.

"Go to the necessarry room and put one of these in your undergarments and put on a clean dress. When you come out, I'll explain what's going on," the matron said, looking at the girl understandingly, before shooing her off.

Dear Journal,

Wow, today has been... interesting. When I left off with you earlier, I stopped because well...I was..bleeding. It scared me a lot and I ran to find the healer matron, but my own matron came in the door just as I was leaving. She told me that it was normal for girls my age and gave me a piece of wool linen to put in my undergarments to keep it from staining my other clothing and she didn't get mad that my white dress got stained.

Apparently once girls reach a certain age, they start doing that once a month and that shows that their body is now able to make babies. Its kind of freaky to think that I could do that now. I guess its just another sign that I'm growing up. I wonder if this has happened to Niki or Parmida yet? Maybe the teachers will tell us more about it in class? Well I guess I just hope all my questions get answered soon. My matron gave me a book that she said might answer some of my questions. I'll have to look at it later. I'm gonna go outside now and see if I can find everyone.

(started from where Selma came in)

Selma wandered down from upstairs and saw Tali counting in the hallway near the entrance to the basement. Figuring the game of hide and seek had already begun, she decided she'd sit out until the next round, if there was another round. She sat down on a chair near where Tali was counting and silently waited for him to finish.

Edmund breathed a sigh of relief once the basement was lit up, pushing a lock of dark hair out of his eyes. He watched the other children move off, and then trundled down the stairs himelf, glancing over his shoulder at the receeding doorway. Once at the bottom, he glanced around. Now. Where should he hide? He was lucky that he was little, there would be more places where he could fit.

Taking his time to look around, the toddler noticed several old trunks lined up against one wall, in a slightly darker corner. He took a deep breath, and then moved in that direction. Upon reaching them, he noticed that they hadn't been opened for a while. Dust had settled on them, and the hinges creaked in protest when he tried to open them. Resettling the lid cautiously, the little toddler noticed that most of the dust had been displaced, which made it look really obvious. He went over to the other two trunks, opening their lids as well. There. Now it looked like maybe someone had looked through all three? Or that no-one had disturbed any of them. That being done, he took another look through the three of them. There were pokey metal things in the first, which didn't look fun to lie on for any amount of time. The second one was filled with old books, which wouldn't give him anywhere to hide. But the third! The third was filled with a bunch of white robes. Edmund smiled, carefully climbing over the edge and into the box, holding the lid open with his hand. He settled himself among them, pushing back on the lid to make sure he could open it again if he needed to. Curling up a ball, he hoped that the robes looked normal enough.

Susan just arrived at the school today and she saw a tall boy at the end of the hall, counting. She crawled over to him and sat at his feet, watching him and waiting for him to finish counting.

Taliesin wasn't quite surprised when Selma wandered in. Though he was surprised when he saw the white robe she was wearing, one that showed the curves she was starting to get. For a moment, he stumbled over his counting and felt his face heat up. Almost shyly he waved at the girl.

He was even more surprised when a toddler came up to him. Blinking he waved at the young girl. He had thought he knew all of the children in the tower, but he'd never seen this toddler before. Strange.

Susan saw Tali's wave and decided to speak to him.
" heo I'm Susaa a u" she said with a cute smile.

Taliesin simply melted at the toddler. He continued counting quietly as he held his arms out to the toddler, silently asking if he could pick her up.

Susan stretches her small arms out so that Tali can pick her up, and she asks him.
"wat u mae?" she looked at him, curious.

Selma smiled and waved back at Tali, before noticing the approaching toddler. She looked at the girl curiously and giggled a little behind her hand when the girl spoke with the appoximate pronnounciations of a toddler.

Susan hears a laugh behind her and she turns her head to see another tall person, this one a girl with red hair.
" Heo i Susaa " she said, waving her little hand.

Taliesin frowned for a moment, resting the girl against his waist. For a moment he counts silently. "I'm Tali, we're playing hide and seek. Want to help me look?" '50 one-thousand.. 51 one thousand..' Tali froze for a moment before remember what number he was on. It was hard to count and talk at the same time.

Susaa? Selma tried to work through the toddler-speak and decided the child probably was trying to say her name was Susan? She'd go with it. If she was wrong, then oh well, the toddler would probably just correct her.

"Hello there Susan. Nice to meet you." She noticed how Tali was having difficulty counting with Susan distracting him. She whispered to him. "Want me to take her from you until you're done counting?"

Susan listened to Tali and said "ies i elp u to uk"
Susan turned her head to Selma and smiled cutely, saying, "Ice to mit u,"

Tali shot Selma a grateful look and tried to hand Susan over. He continued to count under his breath. Hopefully, everyone would be hidden by the time he finished counting.

Selma reached for the toddler and placed her on her hip. "Yes you can help us look, but we have to let Tali finish counting first ok?"

Susan nods to Selma and she caught a hair tuft in her little hands and said
" uteeeeee airrrr , i ike u air" she says while she plays carefully with her hair.

Selma smiled, but then winced slightly as the toddler's fingers caught a snag unintentionally. "Thank you. I like your hair too." She brushed the girl's dark bangs out of her face

Susan giggles and hugs Selma.
"u ae ice, I ike u," she said as she put her head on Selma's shoulder and closed her little eyes. Soon after, she is soundly asleep.

Selma shifted the toddler's position slightly, trying to make both of them comfortable as she figured by Susan's sleepy expression that she might be there for a while. Soon enough the girl's eyes were closed and she was sleeping soundly.

"I guess I get to keep her for a while," she said, whispering to Tali as she moved to sit down with the girl on a nearby bench.

Parmida sighed as she followed Manelin into the basement. She wandered around as she looked for a hiding place. Not there. Not there. Not there. Not there. She marked places off mentally as she continued to look. Tali's voice wasn't as clear now. She wondered what number he was on for a moment, then turned her attention back to finding a place to hide. Ooo, hey, what was that? She backtracked some and stared at the place. Yes... It could work... She eyed the cloth-covered table before her. The cloth reached the ground. Very nice. Most likely very old to be treated so. She reached down and pulled the dust-covered cloth up. She very nearly sneezed as she went under and carefully put the cloth back in place after her.

Manelin grinned as he lit the last candle and finished placing it. Now, where to hide... He had been watching everyone else as they hid and wondered why no one used the wardrobe. It seemed like a good place to hide. He wandered over to it and looked at the doors. Now... Where'd that chair that Niki used to get on top go. He needed it to open the doors. Ah! There it was! He scooted it over towards the doors with loud scraping noises then climbed on top. He reached for the handles and tugged. Now that was odd... Why were they only coming out a little then stopping? Was someone already in there? Drat it!

He got back down and shoved the chair back into place. NOW where was he to hide? Hmm... Did Parmida have room under the table for him too? He wandered over and lifted the cloth only to be greeted with a shrieked
"THIS IS MY HIDING SPOT! GET YOUR OWN!" He dropped the cloth as if it had turned blue and staggered back. Maybe not. He briefly wondered about hiding with Niki, then thought about Parmida's response. Maybe not. He had to get his own spot. He sighed, then wandered around some more. Maybe he could hide in plain sight? ... Not likely. How come everyone else had the good spots?

He lit the candles! The candles... Didn't he place one...? He quickly went over to it. Yes. There were curtains next to it. He blinked, took off his shoes, hid them at one end, and placed himself behind the other end. Ooo, hey, bonus shelf. He tested how much it could hold, then hoped up on it. It creaked some but held him. Now his feet didn't show! He wondered if he should get his shoes. Naw. Tali had to be close to finish counting. He wouldn't have time to get back to his hiding spot!

Parmida grumbled. How dare Manelin try to take her spot! Perhaps if she hadn't of screamed, she wouldn't have to change spots. Tali would surely traced her voice here! She grumbled all the way out from under the table and started looking some more. Oh, why not. She stalked over, opened the wardrobe doors, stepped inside, closed the door, and hid behind the white robes hanging in there. There were even shoes in there, so hopefully her's wouldn't stand out!

Some hard and pointy was poking into Edmunds back in the trunk. It seemed to be several centimeters tall, but not very thick at all.

"One hundered one thousand." Taliesin opened the door and yelled down the stairs, forgetting about Susan. "Ready or not, here we come!!"

He turned towards Selma. "Will you please help me find them?" Tali asked politely. "I could use the company.." The almost-teen gestured to the doorway.

"Sure thing Tali. It'll be fun," Selma said quietly, before reajusting the sleeping toddler on her hip as she got back to her feet. She moved towards the doorway and used her free hand to hold onto the railing as she decended the stairs into the basement.

Taliesin smiled to himself as Selma preceeded before him. His stomach still flip-flopped as he stepped into the flickering light of the basement. It was dim and for a moment 001 clung the stair railing. Almost stubbornly he loosened his hand and took one step down. The roiling in his stomach quieted somewhat with that successful step and Tali managed to follow Selma with the appearance of confidence.

He paused at the bottom and glanced around. Having never been down here before he couldn't tell what had been moved and what had originally been like that.

"What do you think? Where should we start?"

Selma made her way to the bottom of the staircase without incident and without seeing Tali's little moment of unconfidence. She searched the candle-lit room for a moment with her eyes. The semi-darkness had a certain beauty to it and she smiled before turning to Tali. She surprised herself by semi-consiously admiring how the candles lit his profile. Shaking her head to clear it of the thoughts, she responded to him.

"Maybe we should start by looking in the boxes and such that are big enough to hold someone?" She grinned, "You were always better at this game than I was anyways."

Tali grinned a little at Selma, nodding at his suggestion. "Sounds smart." He nodded at Selma's attestation that he was better at the game." Well, that's only because Niki couldn't keep quiet. It helps to have more than one person looking."

Glancing around again he spotted a large table, hung with a thick stained white cloth. Tappping Selma on the arm he gestured towards it and whispered. "You take one side and I take the other?"

Selma shrugged and nodded, heading towards the table, Susan still on one hip. She tried to keep her footsteps as soft as possible as she approached. Once there, she waited for Tali's cue to lift the cloth and see if there was someone inside.

Tali reached the table just as Selma got to the other side. Raising his hand he counted to three on his fingers then lifted the cloth suddenly, ducking down to check under the table.

Nothing but a large dark space stared back at him, and Tali dropped the cloth quickly. With a sigh of dissapointment he stared around the basement some more. There were trunks and boxes and a wardrobe and curtains and, Tali shuddered thinking about it, under the stairs. "Where next.." he muttered softly.

Selma lifted the other side the same time as Tali and was dissapointed as well to find nothing by empty space. She let go of the cloth and looked around the room, trying to decide where the others might have hidden, as well as listening for any noises that might give them away. She nudged Tali and pointed at the trunks, as if to say. "Want to check those?"

Parmida tensed as she heard Tali come down the stairs. Was that a second set of footsteps? Who was with him? They weren't also looking, were they? No fair then if they were! She twitched then stilled herself. It wouldn't do if Tali heard her here; she had nowhere else to hide, and Tali was looking...

Manelin tried hard not to fidget on the shelf. It had already creaked everytime he moved on it before Tali came down, he'd be found if he moved again. So he stayed put and hoped Tali wasn't right on the other side of the curtains...

Tali nodded silently, heading to the first trunk large enough to hold someone. He nodded at Selma grabbing one end of the lid.

Selma mouthed, "One, two, three..." before throwing up the lid of the trunk and looking inside. Searching the trunk, it seemed to be full of metal of some kind, and there was no room for someone to be hiding in there. Giving an "oh well" look to Tali, she moved on to the next trunk.

Edmund shifted in the last trunk, biting his lip as he felt something digging into his back. It was 'sposed to be all soft things in here! No fair!

Then the little boy heard footsteps, and the creaking of one of the other lids. Burrowing deeper into the robes, he curled up tighter, trying not to make any noise.

Vincent wandered around the complex, yawning. Such a rainy day, he couldn't go out, but the lighting was wonderful and he could hear thunder in the distance. A storm was coming.
He stopped at the entrance to the basement; what was it doing open? He listened a moment then quietly closed the door, turning the key. I wouldn't do to have any of the toddlers to crawl in there. He had a sudden flutter in his stomach when the thought that perhaps someone was already down there but he didn't hear anything... perhaps he'd check later. He yawned again, he was certainly hungry and he needed to practice. Where was everyone? He could definately do with a fight to ease his boredom. That night, was that practice? Tali seemed to have the upper hand until...
He caught the sent of pie and headed that way. It smelled like rasberry and he always loved rasberry pie.

Niki almost sat up and glared at Tali when he made the comment that she couldn't keep quiet. Well, she'd just keep very quiet this time and show him that she could! Though she wondered who he was talking to, having only barely heard Selma's voice and couldn't make out who it was. Though she could hear various noises as the two searchers looked for the hiders.

Taliesin followed Selma to the last trunk. "Ready?" he whispered to the girl. Gently he stuck his fingers on the edges of the trunck. "One, two, three!" With a heave he flipped the trunk open.

Showing an amazing amount of restraint for a fidgety toddler, Edmund stayed absolutely still.

Selma peered into the, trunk, but stayed fairly upright so that she didn't drop Susan. She was using both hands to hold her now.

"Ugh, she's getting heavy," Selma said, shifting the toddler's weight to try and make her more comfortable to carry. Her eyes passed over the white cloth in the trunk.

"Think there's anyone in there, under all that?" she aked Tali

"Only one way to find out." Taliesin plunged his hand into the robes searching round until he met something soft and solid and warm. A wicked grin danced on his face as he adjusted his hand and started tickling the body. "Found you!" he crowed with victory.

Selma giggled as Tali started tickling the toddler inside the trunk. "There you are Edmund," she said smiling down at him. "You want some help out of there?"

Edmund hardly dared to breath as he felt the hands on the robes, and then...the toddler let out a squeal - somewhere between suprise and disappointment - as Tali tickled him. He squirmed around a bit, and then poked his head out of the white robes, pouting. At the same time, his fist curled around whatever it was that had been poking him in the back, trying to pull it 'round so he could get a look at it. At Selma's question, he continued to pout. "No." With that, he stood up, still tugging at the thing.

"Whats that you've got there Edmund?" Selma asked, curious as to what he was trying to pull out of the trunk. She leaned down closer for a better look.

The boy blinked as he managed to wrest the thing free of the robes, and then held it up. After a moment, he pouted. Oh. It was a book. Edmund was certainly hoping for something more...interesting. The little boy could just barely make out letters. He certainly couldn't read. Even so, it might have pictures!

Climbing out without help - grasping tightly to the book he had found - Edmund flipped open the pages, trying to see if there was anything written or drawn inside.

Tali seemed less interested in what the boy had found than in finding the rest of the group. Glancing at a marked candle, he was surprised to find that nearly half of the allotted time was up. He must have counted for a while longer than he thought. For a moment he winced, regretting Susan distracting him. A glance at the sleeping toddler wiped those thoughts from his mind.

"I'm going to look for the rest of them. You going to help us Edmund?"

To the toddler's extreme disappointment, there were only words. Lotsa scribbled words, and nothing he could particularly understand. He was about to simply hand it over to Selma, to see if she could make sense of it, when something told Edmund that it was important. He had t'keep it secret, and safe.

Knowing this, the boy hugged the diary to his chest, turning to Tali and shrugging. "'Kay."

Taliesin gestured towards the next hiding stop on their way around the room, a couple of old tapestries and draperies hung against the wall. "How about over there next?"

Manelin quivered slightly from his hiding spot. Luckly, he didn't move enough to move the shelf, and remained quiet. He hoped they weren't about to search his hiding spot.

Parmida shivered and snuggled into the robes surrounding her. She wasn't about to be next, was she?

Slowly Susan wakes up Selma's arms and rubs her tired eyes with her small hands. When she opens them, she notices another toddler and with sleepy voice she says, "Heoo, I Suaa," yawning as she speaks.

Selma smiled and set Susan on the ground. She took the toddler's hand and began following Tali and Edmund on their search. "You coming?" she asked the beary-eyed girl.

Susan nodded her little head and followed Selma. She looked at Edmund with curiosity but she didn't talk. She tried to help Tali, looking around attentively, but as she didn't see the way, she tripped and fell.

Edmund noticed Susan then, glancing at her warily before catching up to Tali. When the little girl fell, he made some movement toward her, but didn't actually try and help her up.

Tali spotted a pair of shoes, half hidden behind a curtain. About to dart forward and investigate the near teen nearly tripped over Susan. Somehow he managed to dance his way around her. For a moment 001 glanced at the curtains then knelt next to Susan. "Let's see if we can get your first find in hide and seek," he whispered to the toddler. He gestured at Selma to take the toddler to find out.

Selma smiled as she saw the shoes peeking out from under the curtain. Someone didn't notice that their feet were sticking out apparently. The redhead stiffled a chucked before taking Susan's hand and helping her to her feet. Once the toddler was stable, she began to lead her silently towards the shoes peeking out from under the curtain.

Edmund hung back as the girl was lead towards the curtain. Wow, someone was pretty bad at hiding, weren't they? Even Edmund had done a better job than that.

Niki continued to keep as still as she could, though the urge to fidget was growing stronger every moment. Staying still so long wasn't fun. She hoped that Tali would give up soon. It was hard to tell what was going on since she couldn't see anything, but it sounded like the youngest hider had been found.

Susan put one foot in front of the other, with Selma's help, and saw something strange behind the curtain. She let go of Selma's hand and went crawling toward the pair of shoes, lifting the curtain.
"Heooooo," she said with a smile.

And another one bites the dust... Parmida thought, hearing the drawn out 'Hello' from outside the wardrobe. She wondered who got found this time?

Manelin blinked as some curtains near him moved, lifting up to reveal his empty shoes. He knew he should have grabbed his shoes; now they would lead the way to him! Phooey. He still hoped that somehow they would get so confused that they would leave him alone and look elsewhere...

Tali almost laughed outloud when the curtain was drawn back to reveal no one. "Who ever owns those shoes sure is smart," he confessed to Selma. "They had me fooled."
Carefully Taliesin looked around, wondering if they should check the rest of the curtains or not.

Parmida had to put a hand to her mouth to quiet her soft giggles. Someone had fooled Tali with their shoes? Nifty! She slowly settled again and waited for the doors in front of her to open...

Manelin couldn't help it as a corner of his mouth turned upwards at the sound of Tali's voice. He was smart! Hopefully Tali wouldn't think to look for the owner of the shoes behind the other curtains... Hiding shoes, good. Hiding next to shoes, bad.

"Indeed they are," Selma replied, laughing.
"And I think it must be Manelin based on the size of the shoes. I don't think Niki or Parmida have feet that small," she commented as she examined them.

Slowly 001 moved towards the rest of the curtains, finally deciding to check behind each one. The far end of the curtains were cast in deep shadow though so the boy reached over for a candle, reaching for the glass base.

Tali groaned outloud. "TIME'S UP!" he shouted. They had wasted such time with the two dud spots that only Edmund had been found. How rude.

Manelin gave a small sigh of relief and moved to pull the curtain back so he could peek out, the shelf creaking as he did. "Really? Already?"

Parmida grinned broadly from her spot and moved forward to open the door a crack. "I'm with Manelin. Already? It seems like it was forever and yet just a moment."

Selma sighed with a bit of disappointment. They had only found Edmund before the time ran out. Oh well.
At least I got to spend some time with Tali.... she thought to herself, not realizing that she smiled at the idea. She waved at the others as they appeared from their hiding spots.

Niki grinned as she sat up upon the wardrobe. Tali hadn't found her! Or most of the others, either, it seemed... She waved down at the searchers. "Think you could move the chair closer so I can get down? Someone moved it..."

"Yup. Time's up already.." He nodded at Parmida and Manelin. "And you, Manelin, were lucky. We would have found you!" He grinned at the two. Tali turned and stuck his tounge out at Niki after she spoke up.

"Dunno," he teased. "Maybe you can stay up there."

Manelin slid off the shelf, picked up his shoes, and wandered over towards Tali. He then blinked as he looked up at Niki. "Chair?" he asked, dumbfounded for a moment, then his eyes lit up. "Oh! Chair!" He went over to the chair, sat down, put his shoes on, stood up, and loudly shoved the chair over to the wardrobe. "Like this?"

Parmida shoved the door open a bit more and poked her head out to look at Tali. She then blinked and looked up to see Niki before shrugging and stepping out. She gently closed the door behind her and readjusted the chair so that Niki could easily step down onto it. "Can you get down now?"

Nikiana grinned at Tali. "You never would've found me!" She watched as Manelin, then Parmida moved the chair closer so she could get down. "Thanks."

After a few moments of pondering, and then a few more spent hanging down, trying to get her feet onto the chair, 002 ended back up on the ground, grinning at Tali still.

"Would so!" Tali stuck his tounge out at his best friend before turning to everyone else. "I hope they're ready for the party now! I can't wait, well.. Kinda. You guys think we're going still have roommates when we go to the tower?" Tali fell quiet for a moment before shaking his head. "Well, I suppose there's time to talk later. Let's go see if the Matron's are ready for us."

He leaned over and blew out the nearest candle, making sure the one in his hand was still lit. He grinned brightly at nothing in particular trying hard to keep himself from gripping the lit candle nervously.

Manelin wandered around the room, picking up candles, blowing them out, and sticking them in his pockets as he went. Soon all of Manelin's candles had been picked up and placed in his pocket - save the lit one he held in his hand - and Manelin walked over to Tali. He hoped they could wait a little before the party, he had to go potty!

Parmida picked up her candle and returned to the group, a little unnerved by the lack of light now. "So... who's going up the stairs first?" Did Tali closed the door after he came down? She thought it had been open...

Niki dusted her new clothing off, shrugging at Tali's question. "I dunno..." She picked up her own candle and joined the group, looking around to make sure that everyone had gathered together and that no one was getting left behind.

"I'll go first..." 002 volunteered herself, thinking that the faster someone did, the quicker they could get out of here and to the party.

She climbed up the stairs, slowly in the reduced light. Her hand, the one that didn't hold the candle, groped the air, searching for the doorknob. The candle came closer and fell dully upon the dusty knob. Niki grabbed it and turned. Well, tried to turn.

"Uh... Tali? I... uh... well... The door's stuck... er... well, I think it's... uh... locked."

Manelin's eyes became wide and round as he heard Niki. "Locked?" he wimpered, starting to dance from foot to foot, his candle bobbing around. "It's can't be locked. Who locked it?" Spot fluttered around the candle, darting to and fro to avoid getting burned as Manelin wondered if there was a bathroom down here...

Parmida looked shocked. She had thought the door was open to start with! "You sure?" she asked in a small voice, knowing that Niki wouldn't have said so if she wasn't sure. She didn't mind being in the basement, she just minded being in the dark basement. She trailed her free hand up her other arm, resting it over the earthworm settled there. She blinked then looked at Manelin. "What's with you?" She was greeted with a blush as Manelin muttered something under his breath about needing to do something.

Niki nodded, though Parmida probably didn't see it. "Either it's locked.... or stuck. But I can't turn the doorknob, so my guess would be locked."

She turned back to the door, frowning. How did it get locked? Would anybody be outside of the door?? Well, it wouldn't hurt to try and find out. "You guys might want to cover your ears..." 002 warned the group behind her as she reached up with her fist and started pounding on the door.

"ANYONE OUT THERE? CAN ANYONE HEAR ME? HELLO??"

"L-Locked!?" Tali's voice squeaked as he rapidly careened into panic. "It can't be!" The almost teen nearly dropped the candle as he sprinted around the small group at the bottom of the stairs.

He didn't even wince when Niki began yelling and pounding on the door. Desperately he began to tug on the doorknob, forgetting that it opened out into the hallway. "Open, open, open..." he chanted. "It won't open!" 001's breath began to come quicker as he turned a pale face to the group down below.

Manelin shuddered. The door wouldn't open and he really had to go...

Parmida grumbled as she headed up the steps and flung her body against the door. Ow. She staggered back a little and rubbed her shoulder as she eyed the door.

Spot fluttered around, bored. It flew down to the bottom of the door and peered out. Hm. The ladybug landed and squirmed under the door, popping out the other side. It took flight again and and hovered around the area.

Vincent got bored with the greenhouses and went back to wondering around the complex. He was forbidden to go down the corridor that held the party until it was time.
Shuffle shuffle shuffle... Eff, this was boring. He sighed and turned back to go to his room when he heard thumping. Was someone running? No...
He stood still and strained his ears for the source of the sound then finally he heard tiny voices, a quiet shoutfest, muffled and down the hallway with the...with the basement.
Vincent muttered some profanity then chuckled nervously. Who'd he trap in the basement?
He dashed into the hallway and into the dark listening as the voices grew louder. Hell, how many people were in there?
He stopped outside of the door and was about to turn the key when he recognized one of the voices. Tali. And boy did he sound scared.
Vincent felt a pang of guilt then couldn't keep himself from smiling. What a wonderful oppurtunity. He could stand here and wait until they couldn't stand it anymore and be their savior or he could just leave and tell one of the matrons that he heard voices down there and they just might get in trouble.
Let's see... Niki, Parmida... Oh hell, was that a toddler crying? Yes...
Vinny grit his teeth. No, he couldn't leave a toddler crying in a dark basement.
Sighing he gripped the key and wondered if anyone would be grateful (would realize he did it)...
Should he? ... He should, but he sure didn't want to...

The silly ladybug saw someone and flew about the boy. Not that it'd probably get noticed by the teen. He looked kinda evil...

Niki sighed, watching the varied reactions of the group. Scowling, she kicked the door. "How'd the door get locked anyways...?" She wondered aloud.

Manelin was dancing from foot to foot at this point, his knees turned inward as he wimpered and hoped that the door would open soon.

Parmida grumbled to herself as she slammed into the door again. Maybe if they couldn't open it, they could simply break it. Hopefully her matron wouldn't take the cost of a new door out of her hide if she ever succeed. Whatever it was, being on the shut side of a locked door brought out a dark streak from her. "I KNOW YOU'RE OUT THERE! YOU LET US OUT NOW OR YOU'RE GOING TO GET IT ONCE I'M OUT! I'M SERIOUS!" She wasn't really sure there was someone on the other side of the door, but it didn't hurt to try, did it?

Niki blinked at Parmida, then covered her ears as the girl yelled. The staircase caused the loud shouts to echo. She wished they could get out of here. Fast. It was just getting cramped and Niki was tired and dusty.

Selma ended up feeling quite useless and scared this whole time, though to someone who didn't look at her closely, they would just think she was being her ususal quiet self. She sat on the ground, with her back against a box at the base of the stairs and drew her knees to her chest, wrapping her arms around them. Closing her eyes, she tried to shut out all the commotion and think about anything except the fact that they were trapped in an increasingly dark basement. After a time, she began to shake a little, though it was unlikely to be noticible to anyone but herself.

Deep breaths. It's just dark. Nothing to be afraid of. Tali mouthed the words to himself as his pulse began to race. The light seemed dimmer. Were the candles going out? A choked sob of fear threatened to burst out as he joined Parmida in pummelling the door. "Please.. Just open!"

Manelin blinked as the light began to dim and looked at his candle. Time to change. He fished a candle out of a pocket, used his already lit one to light the new one, put out the old one, stuck it in a different pocket, and looked at the other candles with a calculating eye. Did they need replaced too?

Parmida quickly jerked to one side as Tali joined her at pounding at the door. She blinked, then shook her head and quickly resumed pounding and shouting. Even if the person who had locked them in wasn't there anymore, the noise were surely catch someone's attention!

Vincent winced at the shouting. He simply couldn't leave them all in there. If it was just one or two...
Straitening up he grasped the key and turned it, flinging the door wide. Putting on his most surprised face he greeted the others as light flooded from the hallway.
"How in the many hells do you get locked in a basement? You could wake the dead with all that screaming..."

Parmida let out a sigh, blowing some of her hair away from her face. She was cranky, and tired, and she wanted a bath. Sarcastic answer it was, then. "Oh, I don't know. Someone locks us in? Don't suppose you know who, do you?" Her throat was raw from all her shouting, giving her voice a scratchy, hoarse feel to it as she spoke. She glared daggers at Vincent as she raked fingers through her hair, perhaps unfairly wondering why he didn't let them out sooner. "As for waking the dead with the screaming... I would think that was the point of screaming to get out. At least then, someone would hear us and come running."

Manelin blinked at the sudden light before putting out his current candle and placing it in a pocket. He quickly yet deftly skirted around the group and made a beeline for the nearest bathroom, Spot hurrying to keep up.

The handle jiggled for a moment before light flooded the stairwell. For a moment Tali blinked in the sudden brightness before flinging himself forward and wrapping his arms around their savior. Tears of releif suddenly flooded his face. "Thank you, thank you, thank you." The almost teen wept as the adrenaline and fear slowly left his body, not even realizing what a scene he was making.

Still shaking a bit, Selma got to her feet and raised an arm to shield her eyes as the door was flung open. Breathing a sigh of relief, she rubbed her arms as if warding off a chill as she followed the others up the stairs, making sure all the younger ones made it out of the basement. Once outside, she pressed her back against a wall and closed her eyes again, trying to force her nerves to return to normal.

Niki blinked, then squinted against the sudden flood of light pouring in from the now open door. She could see someone standing there and blinked rapidly, trying to adjust her eyes to the new light level. She carefully made her way out of the basement, still blinking.

Finally, her eyes adjusted to the change in light and she looked to see who their rescuer was. Vincent?!

Dear journal,
Today ended up being a good day afterall. When I left you earlier, I found Tali down in the hallway. He, Niki, Parmida, Manelin and Edmund were playing hide and seek. Shortly after I found him, a small toddler named Susan showed up and decided to join us. Since Tali was "it" we waited until he was done counting before we all went downstairs. As we got to the bottom, the basement was all lit up with candles, creating these weird shadows everywhere. I happened to look over at Tali...and those strange bits of light and shadows lit up his profile quite...handsomely. *blush* It was nice getting to spend some time with him. Too bad Vincent wasn't there.

After we got downstairs, however, someone shut and locked the door to the basement, locking us all inside! It was scary, and it kept getting darker as the candles began going out. Some of the others started to panic.

After hide and seek, I went back to my room and started to look at the book the matron left me. Its more than I expected. It has answers to all my questions, and answers to questions I didn't even know I had. Some of it is actually a little scary. Like some of the pictures...and where babies come from.... I didn't know they are made in that particular manner. I don't know if I'm ready for that kind of thing. This makes me even more nervous about starting to like the boys. Does that mean I'll do all that stuff with them?

Anyways, I've asked matron for a new book, something fiction so that I can think about something else for a while. She said she'd bring one for me tomorrow. I wonder what it'll be?

Dear journal,

New things just seem to be happening to me right and left. Today I got four little gift boxes. One's from Niki(002), one's from Parmida(006) and the others are from Tali (001). One of the ones from Tali has a pink card on it, while the other has a yellow one.

I wonder what's in them? I wish I had known that we were going to be exchanging gifts. I haven't prepared anything to give to anyone else. Hopefully I can come up with something shortly.

Log Entry #002A
Subject: 005

Where is the coffee around this place? How do they expect us to be able to do these long shifts with nothing to keep us awake? Honestly...hot chocolate just doesn't cut it.

Anyways, it looks like I was right about my subject's physical development. Not long after my last log entry, she did indeed pass that milestone. Her matron took care of the task of explaining it to her, as well as providing her with a book on the matter, which she has been reading quite throughly. I guess 005 had a lot of questions on the matter. She also passed into teendom since my last record.

With entrance into that age group, has come some interesting developments. The subjects have all exchanged some kinds of gifts, presumably for Valentine's Day, some of them delivered anonymously. In all, 005 recieved four gifts, none of them anonymous, one from each of the other subjects in her age category.

005 seems to have sent an anonymous one herself, to whom I have yet to determine. There are only two subjects I can imagine her doing that for: 001 and 003, both male and around her age. Based on her journal entries, I would say it would be 001, but she seems to be paying close attention to 003, so it's difficult to say. It'll be interesting to see how these relationships develop, as hormones kick in.

The testing seems a long ways off, but yet it really is very close. I haven't yet determined what element my subject is most likely to be considered to have power over, if any. Hopefully there will be signs in the coming future, but then again I could have wound up with one of the more difficult ones to place. Joy....

Dear Journal,

I found out yesterday where the others had gotten their gifts. As soon as I found out, I took what I had saved up and bought one each for 001,002,003, and 006. Actually...I bought an extra one for Vincent (003) and sent it anonemousely anounemas- without my name on it. I don't know why I did it. Just an impulse I guess? I wonder what he'll think when he sees it? Seems there's never a quiet moment in my head anymore with all these new experiences, feelings and questions.

The first fight of teendom
Blue=Tali
Green=Selma

Selma smiled at Tali nervously. This would be her first fight as a teen, and her first fight againt a boy in quite a while.

"Shall we get started?" she asked softly, before running towards him and sweeping her foot out in a kick, hoping to knock him over.

Nervous as anything Tali tried a hesitant punch for his first attack. It would be the first time since that night that he had tried a fight. His stomach was tied into knots

Selma smirked as her foot found its mark, but her victory was short lived as only seconds later, his fist connected with her body and she was sent reeling backwards. Huffing slightly, Selma regained her balance before flaying at Tali again, this time attepting to bring him down in a tackle.

Taliesin lost his breath for a moment as Selma's foot connected squarely with his stomach. He didn't even notice his fist connecting with Selma. For a moment he huffed, before lashing out with a high kick.

Selma winced and cried out as Tali's foot connected with her stomach, but that didn't stop her forward momentum and she still managed to tackle him to the ground.

"Nice aim," she grunted as she got up gingerly and backed up a few paces, getting ready to tackle him again

Taliesin nearly missed when Selma launched herself at him. Fortunately for him, his kick still hit. Despite this Taliesin saw the thing in slow motion as Selma slammed him into the ground.

Blinking at Selma Taliesin blurted out, "What was that!?"

The boy got up and brushed himself off and tried another kick
Tali stepped neatly to the side, letting Selma's tackle go by without worry. As she passed him his foot connected with her backside. The boy winced. "Opps...Sorry.."

Tali set up for a punch this time. It wouldn't do to get too predictable.

"Oof" Selma landed on her stomach and was a bit surprised at the kick that landed on her backside. She rolled over onto her side to look at Tali, her eyes glinting mischeviously.

"Its ok," she said as one of her feet swept out in a kick from where she was laying, trying to knock Tali's feet out from under him.

"And that move from before was a tackle, by the way. They didn't teach you that?"

Selma's foot missed its target and she felt Tali's fist drive into her. She winced and scooted back before getting up to face him again.

"Nice shot," she said rubbing the place where he had hit, before preparing herself to punch him back.

Tali neatly jumped over Selma's kick, but stumbled and ended up punching her in the arm as he practically fell over the girl. A hot blush on his face 001 scrambled back up silently and decided to kick instead of punch. So far his kicks led to less embarressment.

Selma was about to comment on the redness of Tali's face, when his kick came up and knocked the wind out of her. Well, so much for the punch she had planned. She collected herself and decided that she would try tackling him again

His face slowly returning to it's natural color Tali was glad of the distraction of his kick. Although he wasn't so sure that he should be doing this well against Selma. Afterall, he hadn't been practicing that whole time he was bedridden. Still, it was nice compared to when he fought Niki..

The boy refocused on the fight readying a punch.

Selma dove at him again, managing to tackle him this time, but not withot receiving another of his punches that she was becoming all too familiar with.

She prepared herself to attempt tackling him again

Taliesin got tackled once again landing on his back with a deep thud. Swiftly he scrambled to his feet, making sure to avoid touching Selma. He hated and liked the tackle that she was using... Maybe if he studied her enough as they fought he could learn it. Maybe.. With a start 001 realized that Selma was waiting on him to attack. Well, he'd certainly oblige the lady! Shifting gears Tali lashed his foot out towards Selma.

Selma fell to the side, as Tali's foot got her, before she had a chance to go after him again. Grunting with exertion, she got to her feet again, her body starting to feel achey from the beating it had taken. Shaking her head to clear it, she decided to try tackling once more, unaware of how akward it made Tali feel. She leapt at his legs, planning to wrap her arms around them and bring him down

Rather thankfully Tali managed to get a hit in before Selma landed on top of him again. Switching again to a punch he readied himself.

Selma couldn't seem to get an attack in. Once again, her tackle proved useless and she was dealt damage from Tali's fist. She knew she was running out of time to wear the boy down, as she was getting tired and they had been going at it for a while. She curled her fist and prepared to use it, hoping it would serve her as well as Tali's had.

Tali was surprised when Selma kept missing. "Should we stop?" Tali asked concerned. He took a deep breath as he noticed her setting up and did the same. Another punch.

It took Selma a moment to respond because his punch had left her winded. Why couldn't she hit him anymore?

"No, no I'll be ok Tali." Whether she would admit it or not, there was a little bit of pride in her that resented the fact that she was more than likely going to be beaten. She raised her fist again.

"We can go another round."

Tali nodded slightly, "If you're sure..." Cautiously he set up for another punch. He decided he would try to hold back some with his next punch.

Selma let her fist fly, not really expecting to hit Tali, so she was surprised when she connected with his body. Her internal victory lasted for about half a second before Tali's fist slammed into her. She backed up, breathing heavily but prepared herself to go another round. She thought she'd try kicking him again

The two fists barely missed each other, but both landed. Tali winced as Selma connected solidly with his face. He decided to do one last punch.

Selma's foot flew past Tali, missing him completely, and she was rewarded with another punch. She stepped back a few paces and bent over leaning her hands on her knees.

"Ok, I'm done," she said to him after a moment, smiling tiredly. "You've defiantely beat me." She plopped down on the mat and sat, her legs straight in front of her, leaning back on her arms, looking up at him.

Not too surprised when his fist connected with Selma, Taliesin still winced. "You okay?" Although he ached, it wasn't too bad. Selma though, looked much worse off.

Selma nodded. "I'll be fine, nothing a warm bath and a good night's sleep won't cure. What about youself? I leave any lasting damage?" she asked quietly, though her tone was joking.

"I'm good. Thanks for the fight, Selma." Tali hesitated, wanting to apologize to getting so many hits, but not sure how to phrase it without sounding condesending or arrogant.

"I'll uh..see you in class then..."

Dear Journal,

I had a fight with Tali today. No not that kind of fight. It was a training fight so that we can learn how to be better in combat someday when we might actually need it.

I thought I might do well against him, at least hold my own, considering how well I did against Parmida in my first fight. It looks like I'm a bit out of practice though, because he soundly beat me and I feel like I have bruises over practically every inch of my body. I think I only managed to hit him, like twice, and he hit me every single time he tried!

Maybe I'm not cut out for this whole fighting thing. I never much liked the idea of hurting other people anyways. I suppose the exercise is good for me, but I think I can rule out soldier as a profession of choice when I'm finally old enough to leave Nandien.

Oh...and another thing. It makes it kind of akward to fight when the person you're fighting is a guy....and a cute one at that! I think I caught him blushing a couple times while we were fighting too, so at least I don't think I'm alone in my feelings about fighting in that regard,

Ok...I think I'm gonna go take a warm bath and ease out some of these sore muscles. I'll catch up with you more later!

Petal Presents
Selma was on her way to the dining hall for breakfast when she glanced at the boxes she had been given several days ago. They had come with a tag that had said, "Do not open until the 14th of the month," and she had abided by what the tag requested, though she had doubted that there would be any way to make sure that she did indeed follow the directions. But now....today was the 14th of the month wasn't it? She glanced at the date keeper she kept near her bed and confirmed that it was indeed the 14th of the second month.

Selma picked up the first box and lifted the lid to reveal a yellow carnation. She pulled it out and touched the petals gently, smiling, and looking at it curiously. She wondered how it had remained fresh since she had recieved it. After thinking about it a moment, she figured that an Earth Elemental had done something to the flower to preserve its beauty before selling it. Still smiling, she returned the carnation to its box and went about examining the remaining three boxes.

Opening the lids of the other boxes revealed a second yellow carnation, a blue carnation and a red rose, all looking as well preserved as the first carnation. She sniffed each in turn, enjoying the fragrence before selecting the blue carnation and pinning it to her dress. Satisfied with the effect, she turned to finally make her way downstairs, making a mental note to thank Parmida, Niki and Tali for the flowers. She hoped the ones she had bought for them were just as beautiful.
