The she-wolf never answered, and Sakura prepared her knuckles for another grand slam, slowly teetering her worn figure to the other side. After being attacked, caught off guard, walking across a huge countryside that would rival the Kusagakure area, cleaning a room obviously untouched since the First Hokage had ruled with nothing to quell her hunger, the pinkette desired nothing more than to drop into the sweet lull of dreams. Her knees shook, her shoulders wavered, the broad length crumpling under the weight of the setting sun. And seriously, what was with everyone calling her "blossom?" It was getting annoying.

Forcing a wad of spit to relish below her throat, the twelve year heaved in another heavy breath, her tense toes curling, feet grinding against the dirt to a different position. Sakura would fall if she kept her current form. Kakashi-sensei, Naruto, hell even Sasuke could go to hell at the moment! So she didn't train her jutsus or tore her muscles to the brink of catastrophe, but that didn't mean she didn't work! Whenever she wasn't training her chakra control with the hospital's regime, the young Genin began studying how inhuman strength. All she needed to do was force chakra into her hands. It was just like walking on water. Didn't that at the very least count?

Apparently not, because here stalked her teammate on the prowl for answers. Softening her brilliant viridian orbs, she smiled softly, forgetting her rage. It wasn't as though she hated Team Seven, heavens no! She loved them just as much as she did her parents; however, the definition of strength the guys used to define themselves bothered her to no end. Healing and nurturing in an assassin's world, wasn't that being strong too? Shaking herself of doubts, the girl welcomed the Uchiha with a nervous laugh.

"H-hey Sasuke." Relaxing her stance, Sakura waited patiently as the two conversed tersely, both predators awaiting for their prey. Feeling the presence leave, the young Haruno sighed audibly, relieved to be away from danger presently. But the "Game of Shadows" bothered her. Did that mean that lady was an illusionist? Or perhaps had training similar to Anko and Orichimaru, in the forbidden artes?

"No," Sakura disagreed softly with her mouth before her head. She didn't think that at all. "I-I mean. . ." What did she mean? So far, the pinkette didn't have much judgement on the situation. Gorro gave them a map, and the mystery woman was ready to kill them. Odd way of companions working together, if someone asked her. "Obviously they want what we do, but their employer must be bipolar or something. . ." The jade eyed girl could only sweat at her thought, like she was one to talk! But Sasuke did have more expertise in reading an enemy. "Nevermind," she continued softly, her bangs exploding from their pins as her head shook.

The raven haired boy ventured to her health, but it only irked her. Did he think that ninja was at credit for the deforestation? Why couldn't anyone just accept the fact that she could survive on her own for a bit? Grumbling to herself, Sakura went to push herself away, only then noticing the grime and batters to her clothes and body. Malachite stains graced her knees and hem, dust coating almost the entirety of her person. Across her arms were scrapes covered by dry blood and ebony gunk from cleaning. In her usually smooth and tamed hair were patches of dirt, and chunks of strand stuck together in wads of dried soap. Even her gloves--which themselves had only been used once thus far--were battered and her right had small tears in the knuckles.

"Oops," internally chuckling at the damage, Sakura could only release a bright smile to her comrade. It looked like she exploded too much energy out of the gloves. "I'm fine. But I'm worried about the area. I didn't think my punch would knock down so much of the forest. . ." She added as an afterthought. Sakura wasn't particularly fond of nature, often times complaining to Ino and Hinata of having to sleep within a forest on missions, but she valued it, and enjoyed the occasional excursion. And she had heard many critters roaming about before she destroyed a good chunk of the area. Guilt just wanted to be her best friend today it seemed.

"Where were you anyways? I was worried!" Sakura scolded, crossing her arms. Sasuke always came across as the guy to do things quickly and efficiently, unlike Naruto or Kakashi-sensei. Being late was a first for the Uchiha to the Haruno. His expression hadn't faltered, and the onyx eyes made her think twice of snapping at him. They were both in a place where they'd never even heard of before, with nothing but two maps, one incorrect--which they still couldn't figure out and little money. Ninja or not, they were Genin, low ranked in the hierarchy with assassins coming from everywhere now. Did that not warrant her nerves?

If she hadn't the resolve to toughen up, Sakura probably would have clung to his arms, grasping for an answer. The boy was famous for ignoring her pleas and scoffing at questions. It was then she subitized the rucksack in his arms, bulging with fresh, ripe produce and other comestibles. It would last them awhile, but since when did Sasuke go the extra mile, even with her? Naruto, she concluded, must have been rubbing off on him. As annoying as the bugger was, she was grateful and bit her lip in an attempt not to smile. Her partner would murder her for thinking that! Inhaling deeply, the girl waited for an explanation. A large bag of food was still a mystery. Was the currency that different from their own? Sakura had a hard time grasping what little they had produced that much.

{ Sasuke Uchiha } --------------------------------------------------------------- ----------

Sasuke nodded at her affirmation of her health, and blinked at the question. "I was getting food. There are a couple farms not too far from here, so I helped out." After deciding that was a good enough explanation, he took in Sakura’s slight form. She was certainly wobbly, and tremors ran up and down her dirty body. Her breath had steadied, however, and aside from a few scrapes and a tattered glove, looked uninjured. The relief he felt mildly surprised him, but he pushed it aside and glanced back in the direction of Grava. "We should get going soon. Who knows if she’ll be back, or if another one of those shinobi."

He led them in silence back to the hotel, his mind working furiously over the scattered pieces of information, trying to fit them together. It was clear the enemy shinobi didn’t want them dead; both Gorro and the mysterious woman could have killed them without breaking a sweat. Then why were they being kept alive? Sasuke thought back on the “game of shadows” the woman had mentioned, wondering what its significance was. Is that what we’re playing? Are we playing right into their hands? Sasuke narrowed his eyes at the thought. There was no way that they could grasp the full extent of the forces at work here. He and Sakura just had to work with the intelligence given to them. He spoke to Sakura over his shoulder. “We can look at our maps when we get back to the room. That’ll tell us where we need to go from here.

Waiting around never bothered him before, but this excruciating reprieve of his partner was troubling him. The last thing he needed was for her to fixate on Sasuke. From Danzō, Sasuke was safe, invulnerable, perfectly able to create a life and end his older brother's suffering. Isako, on the other hand, was a snake in his garden, predator to the most precious and vital component of the criminal's life. She had a strange admiration for beauty, often times latching onto the elder Uchiha, proclaiming her love and devotion to anything he id. Even if he ravaged the perfection she perceived, he would still be favoured. It was annoying.

Recalling his meeting with his mercenary, Itachi's eyes narrowed in vexation. The woman purred herself unto him; what part of find Seiki, watch Sasuke and that girl and report back was so hard to do. Not much in the world could ignite his irascibility any longer, but lacking Kisame due to Tobi's idiocy was one positive maneuver. Though, Tobi never was much for brains, leading the assassin to believe the former Kumo nin also had a large portion due to the incident.

Itachi kept his frame rigid, lest he give the flirt another attempt at him. He longed to see his baby brother, see how much he improved in the last months, witness his misguided hate and drive. Regrets weren't foreign to the once A.N.B.U. ranked shinobi, but was Sasuke's spite any easier than the blood of his clan staining his fingers? Yes; though the suffering wasn't made any easier. How he wished his Sharingan to hurry the blindness. He'd rather not see Sasuke's pain. It killed him inside every time; he flinched not on the outside, his body trained to betray, perfected for deceit on all levels.

Still was the world around the brooding, never seeming to change, move forward with time. Objects were dull, the lights hazy. Not a single thing changed. Stiff knees held, sandal clad feet tucked warmly beneath him, his hands in a strict yet common formation during meditation, scanning the area. He was growing impatient. Isako was idling. Seiki could be found at any moment, and he was not going to allow her to slack off.
"You're late. Report" Commanding the presence abaft him, lazy, onyx eyes slid open, the weary orbs too old for his eighteen years. The sun was setting low, the purples and navies swallowing the sky in a glimmering blanket, his scratched forehead protector no longer reflecting the fading rays of sunshine that never seemed to strike him. "You were caught." A simple statement never held such mocking indifference. He felt the chakra flux, the rumbling earth. A little girl was able to catch one of the great Akatsuki. It almost made him scoff.

"What do they know?" The deep baritone resounded monotonously off the trees, though no louder than the awakening wildlife. To an extent Itachi did care how close the two Genin were to discovering Seiki; however, Sasuke's safety and strength took precedence. Isako had probably little idea of his mute inquiry. That little assumption seemed to be a trigger of sorts, reeling the intellectual into a world of madness.

Burning. That was all his body felt like, his interrogation seemingly igniting his insides, bubbling his blood into a heated frenzy to get out. Instinctively, the young man's hand retracted to cloak to claw furtively at his chest, the pressure useless, the small pain insignificant to what was going on inside. It hadn't been long since he retracted an illness, but it seemed to develop quickly, his veins lit up more and more fiercely at every attack. Slowly, his eyes clenched only to be blinded by explosives of harsh light. He couldn't die so early on, give Isako any motive to advance unto him as before, but, most importantly, leave the organization due to a defective body. Grinding his teeth, the raven haired missing ninja inhaled sharply, his lungs fighting the expansion desperately. It'd be easier to succumb to his zenith of torment, but with so much left to do, and faith in his desire, forfeiting was futile.

"He worked on a farm for that?" Dumbstruck seemed to be the only fitting word to describe Sakura at the explanation. Okay, today was a freaky day and it needed to end. Sasuke "helped out" and was seemingly proud of the extra work he had to do, apologized to her and--her favourite part--didn't need to save her from an exceptionally strong opponent. Her inner self flared up at the thoughts and cheered. Her personal mission seemed to be working out just right. "Ino is going to be so jealous! Take that!" Off in her inner world as Sasuke examined her, the pinkette snapped back to reality at his notion to leave. Nodding in affirmation, she took off, slightly lagging for the latter part of their journey. Expelling chakra was harder than it seemed. First having to cover the body in something similar to armour to protect her bones and skin from the impact, then exerting more out for a hit. She wasn't perfect at it, but she wasn't too shabby either.

Hopping from branch to branch did feel much more difficult than usual, almost like when Kakashi-sensei first taught them how to do so, once Naruto and Sasuke got the hang of walking. That was a tortuous night. He had them wake up at the crack of dawn only to be late--after sunrise--and work them until dusk. Even she was huffing when she returned home. Softly beaming at her companion's back, the cherry blossom quickened her pace, realizing the Uchiha clan's symbol was getting smaller and smaller with the increasing distance between the two. Coming up beside the boy, Sakura couldn't help but wonder why he was being unusually silent. Unfortunately the profile didn't last long, as the path was getting less and less dense. It was then he spoke to her.
We can look at our maps when we get back to the room. That’ll tell us where we need to go from here.

Nodding again, though his head returned to facing the upcoming, Sakura voiced her approval. "Right." She couldn't help but want to smack herself on her forehead. Of course he'd be brooding about that. The girl wouldn't deny it; she too was curious, but right now, all she wanted to do was collapse in the now habitable inn room and eat.

Upon reaching Grava, the two nins slowed their pace until they reached their housing for the night. Rushing ahead, Sakura motioned for Sasuke to follow, actually really excited to show him their "new" room. Traps were set of course; however, the ones nearest the door hadn't been activated yet. After all, what kind of ninja used the door? Turning the key and twisting the handle, the girl gave it a good shove to fully show what their room now looked like, without all the grime.
"Ta-da!" Whirling around to face Sasuke, Sakura couldn't help but feel proud. Her mom would be too. That thought pulled at her heartstrings, but the grin never faltered. Her mom was another reason why Sakura didn't take her shinobi lifestyle too seriously. "Pretty good for a couple of hours, right?"

The floor was lower, making neither of them having to be too careful stepping in lest they trip. Dark wood was now able to reflect the light from the closed window with a couple scratches here and there from the mop's handle ingraining itself with Sakura's strength. The lone window in the main area was hardly cloudy, all the murkiness gone from a bottle or two of unknown, foreign chemicals, the curtains several shades lighter as well. Hardly visible sat the bathroom, the toilet white, the tub and shower duo off white, sanitized and no longer covered in feet of crud. The bed sheets had been changed for the cool nights, the bed frame dusted and matching the floor. All in all, a beautiful sight to behold, considering the before image. The room became habitable yet again, and off to a small space was a cot, big enough for one of them, unable to withstand the weight or height of an adult. Atop sat Sakura's travel pack, Sasuke's own near the bed. Neatly folded at what she dubbed the end were two blankets--also rewashed and checked for any unwanted guests--with her own travel pillow at the head. It was a small sight, but a big impression.

User ImageThe leaves barely rippled as Isako's slight frame alighted on the ground mere feet from where Itachi sat motionless. Even in the stillness she could sense his flat impatience, and she let a small smile grace her attractive lips, for she knew full well the source. "I know, Itachi. I know." She wasn't trying to patronize him; she was simply stating the fact. "I let her near me for a reason." Isako left her words and their elusive meaning to hang in the air before taking a quiet step nearer. She was torn between revealing her true motive and a lie that she knew Itachi would find acceptable. As careful as Itachi was about maintaining a tight control over his feelings, in the short while that she had known him, she had uncovered a delightful surprise in his character regarding Sasuke. Isako knew that he still loved his younger brother, able to discern the restricted feelings from a flash of his eyes that lasted a heartbeat too long, the slightest cadence of tones when referring to him. While this would have escaped notice from even the most alert of shinobi, Isako was a puppet master. She knew how to tell people apart by the sound of their breathing, and how moods played across a wide range of channels produced by the human body, not all of them visible. Itachi also possessed something that made Isako want to study his whole being constantly: beauty.

She was glad that her talents had delivered this information to her. She enjoyed being in control, another quirk gained from her occupation. Isako folded herself gracefully onto the cool grass in front of the Uchiha and lifted her eyes politely at his second question. Based on the intensity embedded in his unfathomable eyes, Isako knew she had to answer carefully.
"Not as much as we do. They are like lost puppies." Isako chuckled softly at her analogy as she pulled a few strands of moonlit grass and began to weave them into a bracelet with deft fingers. Without looking up, she said, "They did get the map from Gorro, though, so they will be caught up soon enough." Silence fell between them, with only the nocturnal noises of animals far off in the trees to break the quiet. With a satisfied smile Isako held up her bracelet and inspected it by the faint moonlight filtering through the leaves. She inspected it with a critical eye, turning it this way and that, until a small tear in one of the green blades drew a frown on her features. "Flawed." The bitterness housed in that single word was immense. She thew her creation to the ground with scorn.

Isako flicked her dark purple eyes back to Itachi, and her frown deepened to see the clear signs of pain in his taut muscles.
"An awful thing, mortality." She watched with mild hunger as she clutched at an unseen burning in his chest, black eyes shining with pain, but the ex-Kumo nin did nothing. For a few more moments his episode continued, then Isako could stand no more. "We should head back." Her voice was like stone, holding none of the emotions churning inside of her that she refused to let him see. Isako let her bangs fall over her eyes as she began to walk away.

He couldn't help but raise an eyebrow at her. A reason? "Your personal mission can wait. You've joined an organization founded by the deadliest shinobi since our time began. We don't have 'light,' and simply do our jobs because there is no hope for us." The biting truth hissed fervently from his dried lips, the void onyx orbs shared by his family tensing in the hardness of his tone, Itachi unable to keep himself in line. Were it no for the vibrant violet ends of her hair, the missing nin probably wouldn't have even been drawn to her next expression, his weary eyes in triumph and expectation: the report still needed to be made.

Puppies? Sasuke lacked in many things, but he was no dog. It wouldn't do well to underestimate even the lowest ranking of ninja. The Jinjuriki heir proved that well enough.
"You shouldn't make judgments about people based just on appearance." The deep baritone of his voice was light, the brunette's murmur escaping with the wind. Itachi hardly ever spoke this much, not even to Madara. As silence embraced them, the Uchiha's mind let go for a moment, cleared of all the annoyance with his new, temporary partner--until she threw a fit over her bracelet.

Isako was weird, considering she was a cohort in the largest and deadliest group in the shinobi world. What was so beautiful about the things she enjoyed? Especially himself, he wondered. Were the crimson rivers flowing through his fingers so enticing? Were they so sweet to call to her, like Sirens to sailors? That, was a true mystery that intrigued Itachi. Should Isako's obsession falter, the Sharingan user figured he'd lose interest in her all together. She could easily pass as beautiful to many men, but it was her fixation that kept his attention.

Inhaling sharply from his attack, his blinded eyes pounded at the light, reverberated at her snide, impassive remarks and swirled into the protection--and destruction of the bloodline trait he was so "blessed" to control.
"Immortality is unsightly," Itachi seethed through his clenched teeth, having had enough with her. Shifting to stand, his breathing terse, the very exigence painful and presently unwanted. Grinding his teeth the man took off to their lodging, taking note of her last comment, with her head hung as though she was a guilty victim.

Night was approaching swiftly, the hues of the sky muddling into a dark abyss that enveloped everything with its cool brush, soothing even the roughest of hearts and the troubled minds with the glittering hopes high above. Whatever Isako hesitated on, her clouded mind needed to change focus from her surroundings and back to Seiki. That man was of utmost importance, not of the hideous garden they were trapped in nor her true motives of becoming an Akatsuki member.

{ Sasuke Uchiha } --------------------------------------------------------------- ----------

By the time they reached their hotel in Grava, night had fully fallen, bathing the countryside in indigo darkness. A peaceful symphony of insects swept in on the breeze from their open window as Sasuke swept a critical, yet admiring eye over the transformed room. It certainly was good for a couple of hours. Next time he’d know not to underestimate a woman’s touch. He nodded slightly as he inspected the freshly-scrubbed tiles on the bathroom floor. “Not bad.” It was a mild compliment, but he knew Sakura would appreciate it. Sasuke strode back to the main room and noticed for the first time that Sakura’s bags rested on the cot, while his were leaning against the residing bed. He glared at the arrangement, knowing that he should be the one sleeping on the less comfortable fixture but he wasn’t sure if he was up for an argument in his present state. In response to his thoughts, Sasuke’s legs and back muscles throbbed, and he sat down heavily on the cot. He reached for his pack and pulled out the two maps, the one from Gorro and the one given to them in Konoha.

Rolling them out side-by-side, Sasuke scrutinized the symbols by the flickering candlelight, somewhat frustrated that Konoha’s map was in Kanji and Gorro’s in Hiragana. For several minutes no one spoke as he studied the maps, the rise and fall of the insects’ cries punctuating the silence. It didn’t take Sasuke long to realize that the map Gorro had given them was much more recent. Not only was the paper smoother and the ink fresher, but several more locations had been added to the area covered. Soon after, he found what he was looking for. “Sakura, take a look at this.” He pointed to a particular location, higher up in the mountains, which had a note in red ink scrawled next to it: “Blue.”And here.” Sasuke tapped his finger on a second location, marked with a similar note that read “Gold.” He shifted his dark gaze to meet hers.

I don’t know what they mean.” Sighing, he smoothed out the curling paper. Before his fingers left the surface, he felt something come loose from the map. Frowning, he lifted the scroll and spied a small slip of paper with handwriting similar to that on the map. Sasuke picked it up and read aloud: “I don’t have much time. I, Gorro, am working for Seiki and am trying to keep him safe from the Akatsuki.” Sasuke exchanged a glance with Sakura and continued. “With Seiki’s help, I’ve found the location of the items he is needs to gather. I can’t tell you everything here, but if you meet me at Leiva in three days, I can explain. I am not your enemy.” Sasuke stared at the tiny piece of paper, his mind working furiously as before. Could it be possible? His cynical nature didn’t allow him to hope that they might have an ally, and the whole thing reeked of deception. But still, it was the only lead they had. The orders they had from Konoha were to find Seiki and guard him from the Akatsuki until reinforcements were available, but they had no idea where to start, and Gorro – now claiming to be on their side – offered a way to find him. He explained his thoughts to Sakura.

Look,” he finished, annoyed once again that he had no one to rely on but a fellow Genin. “This could be the only chance we get at finding Seiki before the Akatsuki do. I don’t trust Gorro, but he didn’t kill us when he had the chance, and neither did that woman, so maybe they do want to help us.” Sasuke rolled up the map with the note and returned it to his pack, still speaking. “This might be a trap, but it’s all we have. He gave us the map two days ago, meaning that we need to meet him at Leiva tomorrow.

Sakura smiled softly at the sorta-compliment, noticing the look in his eyes. Slowly, she began to rub her right arm, the translucent skin prickling from the cool breeze. The touch was comforting to her troubled mind, reminding her where she was and what they had to do. Watching his obsidian eyes narrow at how the arrangement was set up, the Genin approached him carefully. "Sasuke, you need it more than I do. . ." Her careful voice was as subtle as the insects outside, quite possibly annoying, yet, soothing to an extent. With his legs giving in and his form sinking to her bed, the pink haired girl timidly pondered over, her own body wanting to cave in from the events. "It's been awhile. . . Since I've been that scared," Sakura's thoughts shook her body, Sasuke's lifeless form on the Great Naruto Bridge flashing by. Though it had hardly been a year, it seemed like ages ago.

Her aching feet carried her to the cot, her form gingerly sitting on the clean floor before it, the maps separating the two. Even she knew the poor bed substitute wouldn't support her weight alongside her partner's. Blinking blearily, usually vibrant jade orbs wandered dully, not focusing on anything set before them. As Sasuke called for her attention, the aforementioned moved her eyes to him, trailing down his arm to the map silently. Blue. Gold. What on earth? Were they locations? The raven haired boy continued on, reading a note hidden in the parchment. An ally? After trying to kill them? And what happened to working with that woman? Sakura clutched her stomach, her head was reeling; she was going to be sick. Her lips trembled as Sasuke tried to verbally figure out the puzzle, her body beginning to shake.
"Our--" Her voice broke as another quake overtook her body, the lump in her throat stuck.

"We have our com links right?" Her eyes were petrified as they gradually, but surely, met her companion's. "Let's split up." It was hardly a whisper, the sentence choked on itself, cutting up the air between them. "You--you go to Gorro, and I'll check out 'Blue.' It's closer than 'Gold' right? Please don't look at me like that," She couldn't stand it. She didn't want to leave his side, not ever, but the gravity of the situation was settling in. This was too big a mission for the two of them. Even Kakashi-sensei would have brought an elite team with him here. And yet, all that could be spared were two Genin, still inexperienced in the shinobi world, still learning how to walk on their own.

Taking a sharp breath, Sakura continued, her eyes darting around her handiwork, focusing anywhere but Sasuke.
"If it is a trap, you would be able to handle it better than I could. We would be in radius so all you'd have to do is patch through a message. . . And we don't know how long this 'Seiki' guy has. . ." It took all her might to look back at the boy. "I can handle myself," Though she meant it as a statement, it came as a pleading.

It was true, though. they only had a limited time to find Seiki and stop the Akatsuki. What if that woman was part of them? And what of Gorro? Sasuke would be able to defend himself from Gorro, as well as capture, if that's what it came down to. Sakura, though she had inhuman strength, courtesy of her mentor, and could heal most injuries given to her, probably would be the last person to depend on if being sent into a trap. It was sad to admit, but it was true. Though on the other hand, it wouldn't be much different should she need to rescue him, it gave them a better chance than nothing. Her stomach flipped and lightly growled, its need for sustenance taking over. How she wished they had someone else here. Naruto, Kakashi-sensei, hell, she'd even take Lee. Just someone that could give them a bit more of a chance. Where she didn't doubt Sasuke, she doubted herself, and worried about trifling matters that should have been left at home.

Curling her legs to her chest, Sakura gingerly wrapped her arms around them, the room too cold now, but its suffocating binds were lighting up her veins like fire. Toying with her fingers, the pinkette slid the leather material from her hands, dropping them without a care unto the maps, before forcing herself to stand. Though the cot groaned in protest, Sakura sat down beside Sasuke, her heart thundering inside. Timidly, she brought a hand to rest on his shoulder, forcing chakra to flow into him. Exhausted, yes. Weary, most definitely. But if they did do as she suggested, Sasuke needed to be in top shape. All she would be doing is running further out to investigate some mountains. Should something happen, she'd more than likely bring down the mountain to make things easier.
"Leiva is a ways away from here. We should eat and rest for tomorrow. . ."
