I've been wondering about a book that I read when I was younger. It was a YA thriller type of book. I don't remember much about it, but the teenager girl protagonist is left alone at home for a while, I think. There's a soundproof room in her house that her father built. A man keeps her prisoner in that room... and I think maybe in a coffin at times too? Not sure about that last bit though. sweatdrop

The Soda Master Herself Online Fairgrass OliviaFalconer A librarian discussion list I belong to (non-Gaia), calls questions like this "stumpers". People will come in to libraries looking for books they read 20 or so years ago and ask librarians to help find them, with only a vague description. The librarians then ask others on their list to help them identify the book. Yeah ... my dad has a book like that he's been trying to find for about 10-15 years. sad
So, in case anyone has heard of this, here goes. He read it in school (early to mid 70s?). It's a sci fi book in which the people of earth learn that an asteroid is going to collide with the planet, so they create a rocket (space ship, space station, something) that they plan to use to find another planet (or maybe just to live on). That was the first part of the book. The second part is about them in the ship--but he didn't get to read the second half.
I know that's very little to go on, but if anyone's heard of it, it would make a great father's day present. wink Sounds like When Worlds Collide! Here is the amazon link: CLICK ME!That was published in 1999. Sounds like Apollo 13 to me, but I have no clue. I'm more of a fantasy kinda guy, ya know? That edition was done in 1999, the original was made in 1933.

Perfect timing for me-- there's a book that I read in school a few years ago, maybe four, five? And I can't remember what it's called. --The town was divided into colour districts, brown being the poorest --Lemonade was very expensive --There was something about these people who were children but not children... I'm a little sketchy on that (memory like a sieve) --One of the character's names, the mother of the boy that the book was based around, her name was something like Iyra or Iyla, or something similar, I think
If anyone knows what book this is I'd be very grateful if they could tell me, I really want to read it again...

Quote: I am also looking for a book to, let see, in this story it is: *probably set in the future where the world is deprived from technology *They are all assigned numbers instead of names (I think) *The word "I" has been banned from use (They say that "I" was the one who brought the dark ages that created the now) *They replaced the word I with we *The protagonist begins to discover electricity *At the end of the story, the protagonist gives himself a greek name, the one who first gave mankind fire ...weird, I actually know the entire plot yet I can't remember the title, I thought it was called society (including numbers) but I don't know if that is correct or not, and I also know that the author/publisher published two in one meaning that the first is the final draft and the second part includes the rough draft with the changes, can anyone help me remember what this book title is, if you need more information just respond to my reply. Anthem, by Ayn Rand. I love this book. smile Quote: Hiya guys! Um....i hope you guys can help me with this book i just really want to find: *Alright i know its set in kinda of when ships was used XD i know, not much help! *I also remember that the main character is a girl that can walk on water *They are on a ship for a long time and bad stuff happens *A boy is involved, but cant remember how... *Its a young Adult book... *This book was new when i was in Middle School....So its kinda old now....XD im in High School now! *Thats basically all i can remember! I hope someone here will know what this book is! lol i kinda read it awhile back and then i never remembered the books names and authors names! XD But if you have anything that resembles this book...then please dont hesitate! icon_smile.gif Oh and im sorry if my punctuation is probably bad, im kinda half asleep! I have read this book. It's killing me inside that I'm drawing a blank on the title. D: Seriously, I've been trying to come up with it for over an hour now.
If we're thinking of the same book, then the main character is a girl who is called something that starts with an "m", which is a term that means "walks on water". She's one of the last remaining people who can do this, and thus is a very valuable asset to the people of the ship she's on. I'm pretty sure she's either a servant or a slave - she's not on the ship of her own free will, at least. But then one/two other people end up on the ship (potentially the boy you mentioned) and they end up escaping together (possibly when the ship crashes in a storm). I don't remember whether the boy can also walk on water, but I...think he can do something elemental. Maybe.

I am looking for a specific book but I do not remember the title. This will be a bit more of a challenge since I have never read this book but I have seen it on shelves before as well as on barnes and noble emails:
*The cover has two serpents intertwined *a summary,"I cut myself on the page" , "there was no blood on the page where I cut myself"
And that's pretty much it, if any of you can help me identify this book I would really appreciate it. Also that you for identifying my first book post, Anthem by Ayn Rand

It's called Endymion Spring by Matthew Skelton. It has two snakes or serpents intertwined and here is a quick summary of what I thought it said when I read it before, "...Centuries later, in an oxford library, a boy touches a strange book and feels something pierce his finger. The volume is blank, wordless, but fine veins run through its pages, and they seem to quiver, as if alive..." Anyways if any of you did try to find the book I was looking for then thank you and can stop the search for I have found it.

I am looking for a book I lost some time ago It was a Sherlock Holmes novel not by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. In it he is after a ripper or a slasher not Jack the Ripper. The paper back was red with a black and white illustration.I picked it up in an overstock book store between 2000 and 2004 if that helps. Please let me know if you know the title or author. Thanking you in advance.

As far as fourteen-year-old Jolly knows, she's the last polliwog still alive -- and this special talent makes her invaluable to the pirate captain who raised her.
When someone sets a trap for Jolly's ship, she alone escapes. Washed up on a tiny island, she meets Munk, who has been raised in hiding. Munk longs to go to sea, but his parents are afraid of pirates. They have forbidden Munk to reveal his true identity -- he, too, is a polliwog.
But pirates are not the only threat in the Caribbean. Evil forces are stirring, and a demon from the sea attacks and murders Munk's parents. Was the demon really after Munk? And Jolly, too? Why are the polliwogs so valuable, and who's willing to kill to possess them?
Jolly and Munk must sail with a strange crew of outcasts, led by the mysterious Ghost Trader, to avenge their loved ones and try to stop an ancient, malevolent force known as the Maelstrom. What it will cost both teens, no one can tell -- in this thrilling fantasy from the extraordinary Kai Meyer.

So I've got a book in mind. It's part of a series that has...four books, I think, but don't quote me on that.
There's a girl pretending to be a boy whose name is Job. Job is also a fire-user, and a street urchin - I believe, though I can't be sure, that she's one of the last fire-users in the world if not the last. Aside, of course, from the Fire Queen, whose name begins with a Z (I think), and who is the antagonist of the story. There's an earth-person and a water-person as well, though they don't show up until later in the series, and a girl who travels with a caravan: her name is Luriel or Lurien or something similar to that, she's the wind-user, she plays a flute and she's blind.
The basic plot is that there were once four 'queens', and (I think) they formed a Queen's Knot or something? That's a bit fuzzy in my mind. Anyway. The Fire Queen killed off or got rid of the other three to have all the power, and since then she's been killing off kids with magic so that she can keep it all to herself. These four need to meet up and fix it, basically.
So if anyone else knows what these books are, please remind me, because I want to reread them and it's driving me nuts.
