She bows again and walks past the other Maiko head down and went down the stairs to her sleeping quarters. Just then, Tora felt a stern hand on her shoulder. She turned to see Mother. Tora breathed deep to clam her racing heart.
"Where do you think you're going?" She asked in a stout voice.
"I.. It's late so I was going to bed," she stutered, wondering if that was the right thing to say.
"You must be the new Maiko, Tora."
"Yes Mother," Tora replied shyly, giving a bow.
"You don't go to bed until I say so, you don't eat until I say so, you don't bathe unitl I say so. Got it?" Tora was in tears, all she could do was nod her head. Mother shoved a bucket and rag in her face. "The only thing that seperates you from a maid is your studies. You just remember that." With that said, Mother turned on her heals and walked up stairs to her room.
Once Tora heard the door slide shut, she let her tears stream from her eyes down her face. Not even a minute in her new home, and she'd gotten off on the wrong foot with mother. A gasp escaped her throat as she wiped her eyes and began cleaning.

A few hours later Tora had finished her chores. She sat on her cot in the corner of the quarters. She pulled a pen and paper and started to write something. "Dear Mother. Hello mom, hello grandmother. I hope all is well with you. I was just writting to say everything is great here! My first day was the best..." her thoughts trailed off and she began to shake. She was hungry. She remembered seeing the other Maiko eating an apple. She snuck into the kitchen, careful not to make a noise. She slid back in bed and devourd the apple... she was soon in deep sleep.

Sun shown through the screen windows and landed on Tora's tired eyes. She squinted at the bright light and sat up, ready to face a new day. She streatched her sore muscles, stood, and began to get ready.

"Oh! Hello," Tora said shyly. "Yes, I'm fine, Domo Arigato!" She smiled. "So, please, tell me about your self. How long have you been here? Was mother that way toward you?" Tora asked, rubbing her arms.

"Oh I think Mother was just in a bad mood when you arrived. I think she had a headache because she is usually very nice. My name is Serena and I am the head geisha here. I was just promoted recently. I have been here for a very little time. I am originall yfrom America,"Serna smiled sweetly.

"Wow! America?" Tora replied stuned. "I've read all about it in my studies! My Grandmother got to go when she was my age. I heard it's a very big place!" She added with excitement.

"So," Tora spoke softly, "are you going to be my new Onee-sama now?" She smiled at the thought. "She seems really nice! And I've never had a sister before." Her smile widend. "I think I'll like it here. I hope you're right about Mother; I just hate to dissapoint people and have them bad at me," she sighed and looked to the floor. "It's my biggest fear," she added softly. She looked back up at Serena, "It's nice to meet another Geisha though, besides my Mother and Grandmother!"

"Oh, really? Would you? Thank you so much!" Tora boasted with excitement, remembering to bow ever so lowly. "I'll forever be in your debt," she added elegantly.

A smile appeared on Serena's lips as she watched Tora.
"Just remember not to do anything to get me in trouble,"Serena said with a wink.

Wrapped in some of her more formal kimono, a young girl stopped in front of the Kazenotanpopo Okiya. Next to her was her aunt, looking high and fair beyond words next to the smallish and scared-eyed Shiori. The place was exceedingly lovely to look upon, and the air was fragrant with the scent of flowers wafting in the gentle wind. Her aunt, smiling serenely, looked down at her from beneath her flower-patterned umbrella.
"Shiori-chan, now it is time for you to be a grown woman. I will not go in with you because this is your first step and it is one you must take on your own. Be very polite and courteous, and do everything that they tell you to do. I'm sure you will do just fine though!" She smiled and nodded her head, indicating for Shiori to enter the Okiya.
Shiori took a deep breath, adjusted her kimono and her hair, and stepped as delicately as possible into the building. She wondered who she should speak to first. Her heart was hammering in her chest.

"Hello,"Serena greeted the new girl warmly.

The girl, having removed her shoes to the small nook next to the entrance, saw the fair lady standing before her. She bowed very low on a sudden, dark eyes downcast. She knew she must be blushing profusly.
"Konnichi wa! Forgive me, but I am entirely new here, and I do not know who the leader of this Okiya is. But could I venture to guess that you are the head geisha, for your appearance and beauty? Gomennasai, if I am incorrect."
