Abilify makes me stoned 24/7. I'm hoping that wears off soon, cause it's getting old.

h3rsh3y Depakote made me crash a lot. Wellbutrin ******** me up massively. depakote has been good to me, when i take it like i'm suppose to. long story there. lets just say in rebellion to my father wanting me to up my meds because i disagreed with him in arguments, i tried to go off all meds. bad move cuz i went suicidal, unbeknown to anyone, so i went back on zoloft but not depakote. trying to get back onto depakote but not succeeding. mania just fits me for some reason right now. where was i? oh, right, depakote never did make me crash. the combination of zoloft and depakote made me stable so that i had a somewhat numb sort of feeling. i describe it as numb becaus i had been going up and down with moods for 4 years that when you are in the middle with no extreme emotion, it can make you feel as if you are numb.

h3rsh3y - I was laughing my a** off watching your Zoloft-blobby going all wacko. I've actually seen this happen.... I guess it's not actually "funny", though ...ahem.... unless it's that stupid Zoloft blobby!!! scream
As for meds, my experience is limited since I'm dealing with ADHD and mild depression for myself and bipolar and ADHD for my daughter. (I take Adderall XR for my ADHD along with a low dose of Zoloft.)
My daughter takes Adderall XR 20mgs twice a day for the ADHD plus Abilify 5mg twice a day which she started last month. Her psych-doc wants to add in either Lithium or Depakoke but we need to get blood work done before she is prescribed anything. Given that we have over 2 feet of snow outside, I think the bloodwork is going to have to wait.
Anyway... the psychiatrist said that Lithium generally works for only about 30% of those that try it - but for the patients that it works for it works great.
There can be a "dulling" affect with these meds but I imagine it is better to feel dulled than to feel out of control.

Lithium messes up your body like crazy. I got the munchies nonstop on it and had to get blood tests. It didn't even work. Depakote made me crash when I went out with friends. Honestly I prefer cycles to numbness. Numbness is like apathy.

h3rsh3y MuraDarkcaves Technospaceman MuraDarkcaves I've been only on Wellbutrin for the past six years, and it just isn't cutting it anymore! I'm going to try Neurontin pretty soon hopefully. I hear it works pretty well for most bipolars. Well...It had zero effect on me, and they had me on the ceiling dose (2400mg) and Seroquel and Zoloft. I think its because I just decided to not let it effect me. This is when I was locked up. Never forget to take your Neurontin or your Seroquel if you take it. Neurontin gave me violent withdrawl when they just took me off without weaning me off. I thought I was going to die. Violent withdrawls... Great... I'm a little nervus, but what can ya do? I still gotta try it, because the wellbutrin just don't cut it!!! What does Wellbutrin do to you? I took it once and it sent me psychotic, same as Prozac. I heard bipolars tend to have that reaction to antidepressants. I wonder if maybe it's cause I tend to be more manic to begin with.... I think the antidepressants do not work for people diagnosed with bipolar disorder is because the medicine is controlling different kinds of chemical im/balances in the brain. Antidepressants are for the serotonin levels, whereas (I might be wrong) bipolar has to do with more than just that one chemical. I'm not sure on this, I'm not studying neurochemistry/neurobiology at all. smile

I am bipolar and use a cocktail of Lithium, Paxil and Klonopin (clonazepam) which works well. The idea of using this mix according to my psychiatrist comes from the fact a smaller dose of each works better together - so far I'm no where near a high daily dose for any of these drugs.
The drugs used for bipolar patients seem to differ between Europe/Canada and the USA since I've never heard of Abilify or Serequel being used and Depakote is seldom used here.
No one I know uses Neurontin but Trileptal (oxcabenzazepine) has become widely used because it is not toxic but acts like Lithium. The doctors here love Lithium and use it for bipolar as well as an anticonvulsant, to treat ADHD, as a treatment for blood disorders and a medication to regulate sugar levels in Type II diabetes.
We have socialized medicine and Lithium is cheap.
