Well for me the earliest mecha show I remember was Grendizer. But what got me into it was Transfomers and Macross just like the two gents above since those shows drove me to pursue the toys non-stop. I never discovered Gundam until I came across the Japanese Battle Master for PSOne.

I have to say, it would have to be the Super Robot Wars series in general. o_o One day, Mom brought home Super Robot Wars Alpha. I played it and loved it, and grew a much greater interest in robot anime and games. =D
I mean, I've watched some anime before, but.. Super Robot Wars just made it so much more fun. >_<

Fot me it was Transformers, Voltron(Go Lion) & Tranzor Z(Mazinger Z). They aired together back in the day during the same after school cartoon block.

First generation power rangers started my interest in mechs, transformers cemented it.

I would have to say Robotech (the books, not the anime), Mechwarroir 2(a game) and Gundam Wing when it premired on Toonami

hm... my first mech hookup was NGEvangelion, then i go out and found gundam wing... and along came SRW Alpha. and i've been a mech drunkard ever since.
lately i've been enjoying MechWarriors and GadgeTrial (a japanese game) though ^^

That's a tough call... my first mecha cartoon was either Astroboy or Transformers.
I remember seeing Goldorak(Grendizer in french), but didn't remember it much. I also remember seeing voltron in viewmaster, and another super robot that was colourful but I felt it was stupid as a child.
When I was growing up with only 2 channels on tv, cartoons were limited.
