Rank and experience. A young pilot fresh out of the academy would just be issued a basic mech with standard kit. If he were of higher rank, he could requisition better equipment or maybe a different mech. A front line veteran would probably have made signifigant customizations to his unit to ensure his survival. An Ace-in Gundam Cannon someone with five kills (Pretty standard universally) could almost certainly requisition better parts, equipment, or even a new Mech if his performance is exceptional.
trust me. I know this stuff.

Plus, This is why its a semi-private RP. I'm fully aware at what makes what. And i can always reference outside materials. @ Cale: Actually, you'll be surprized at what I give the zakus. I think you'll approve. http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/48520420/

Zaku and Gouf are in many ways essentially the same thing. All a gouf is is an upgraded and specialized Zaku...
If I remember right, the Gouf was originally the prototype for the Zaku type A or something like that...
Edit: Anyways, is the plot sound?

I totally forgot how to switch into the cockpit view.... it's pitiful. Oh well. I also started a new game in X-Wing Alliance.

My problem with X-wing Alliance always was that the ships seemed to move much more slowly then in the movies... So I downloaded a program that allowed me to edit the coding of the XWA exe and fixed it. Now starfighters moved at the canonical speed of a 360-480 meters a second.
It sure made starfighter vs starfighter combat allot more difficult.
