The captain kissed her back. He didn't even bother to draw away, instead just putting his arms around her in a hug.

Stratford drew back after a few moments with a lazy smile. He moved his head so that he could draw Arianeira into a hug then whispered, "We really must go to bed. We will need an early start."

Stratford flinched at the tone. It really tore at his heart. He turned to kiss her cheak and smiled weakly. That tone had hit him hard.

Arianeira noticed the movement but didn't realise why. She let him kiss her cheek, then slowly pulled away. "Goodnight then, James." It felt odd using his first name, but she liked it.

"Arianeira El'Kara? Thats an unusual name. What planet is that from?" James replied, pinning this new information on the female.

"Kara. It means literally "Of Kara": it's a traditional thing. Anyone who has citizenship of Kara adopts it as a surname, though most have a family name before it, for example one of my childhood friends was Genria FarillionEl'Kara."

James shook his head at the idea. What an unusual notion. Is that a government thing?

Arianeira shook her head. "I think it used to be law, but now it's more of a tradition. It has been that way for thousands of years and the citizens respect the customs and so it continues. It is also a way of distinguishing people from Kara from other planets as although the planet is relatively small, the peoples populating it are diverse." She sighed. "My own parents were descended from the people of Earth. They never took the name and so were never full citizens. But that was more an attitude than because they were not accepted. To them, Earth was an obsession and no other planet was ever good enough - they always scorned the others who wanted to stay there. I do not know if they ever managed to return to it though."
