Mingan
REFERENCE

"Ah, emotional triggers. Sounds like a bit of meditation would do you some good. Get your mind all sorted out," he grinned, barely resisting the urge to tap the girl's nose.

Poor kid, he thought, so determined, getting worked up over things that would likely work themselves out with time, age and experience.

He fetched his second beer and waved the boy over with the steak, glancing back at the girl. "Mind if I sit here? On my own today, wouldn't mind a little company if you don't."

He put out a hand. "The name's Mingan."

Jet Devereux

Jet blanched. Not because of the question, not really, but because she could not for the life of her work out an answer. What would she do with him? Her only experience with boys had been a farm boy who was two years older than her and had been taken away from her when he was ten; his mother said she was a bad influence.

So, what would she do with Matthias? She would probably tease him, much as Svana was doing. She would try, anyway. She would make fun of his hair, his mannerisms. She would ask him what his favourite drink was and drink it better than him. She would... "I..." mumbled Jet. "I suppose..." Finally, she lifted her chin definately, her eyes glittering with the confidence Svana's question had built in her. "I'd tear him to pieces." I guess...

Svana burst out laughing. "You would, would you? I'm curious, do you mean that literally or figuratively?" She loved that this girl was game. Such a mousy little thing, but she appreciated the attitude. It would almost be more interesting to push Matthias off onto Jet and see what happened. She was curious to see whether she could back up any of her hot talking.

"Where did the lad go, anyway?" she mused gleefully, peering around.

"Sure go ahead. And I'm Kai."

She mentally noted the suggestion Mingan gave her. It seemed like everyone thought a meditation was in order. She took another sip of her water before moving it to the side. She took his hand and shook it firmly.

Jet Devereux

"I... You know, I'm not sure." Jet laughed, just a little, but it felt fabulous. It had been so long since she had had such fun. "I've not much experience with boys," she mused, "but I'm sure I could find something to do with him." She frowned, then. "Although, like I said, he's really not my type." Jet was thinking of the boy she had been sweet on once, but even that wasn't as special as she had been led to believe True Romance was.

"I think reading books has ruined me," she said then. She leaned back in her chair and crossed her arms across her front, a little more comfortable now. She thoughts perhaps she was beginning to work this elf woman out. Maybe. "Although, having said that, I never figured I'd stumble on a cafe in my courtyard, either. Does it seem a little strange to you that we're all here at once? I mean, right now. Why us? Why now? I wonder if it means anything."

The warmth of the drink they shared spread through Svana's body, relaxing her. She had quite a high tolerance, especially because she spent her free time sucking down swamp moonshine which was foul and potent, but this stuff warmed her. It wasn't too bad.

"I'm of the firm opinion that you will never know what type you prefer unless you sample one of everything. Without experience, how would you ever be able to tell?" she posed in amusement. "And what do books have anything to do with it?" Books didn't fare well in the swamp. Paper tended to disintegrate. What few documents they had, they had to be very careful with. They had spent some time attempting to manufacture paper and books, but it had been a somewhat futile waste of time.

She gazed around the odd cafe with no answer. "Why now, indeed," she agreed. "I don't have an answer, and I doubt anybody else does either. I'm content to wait and watch, see what happens. Although, I must admit, I could have used a place like this a few centuries ago. It would have certainly broken the monotony of the years."

It really was a shame. She had been trapped in the swamp so long with the same people to share every identical day with. Finding this place would have been a miracle.

Jet Devereux

Jet poured two more glasses of the alcohol but didn't drink any more right away. She was beginning to feel warm and happy - like she hadn't felt in a long time. Her focus was slipping, as though she couldn't remember exactly what she wanted to remember, and this made her think of fairies again. I wonder if I'll forget all about my home, she considered wistfully. It would be nice. At least for a while.

"I suppose you might be right there," Jet admitted. "I haven't had the freedom for much of that. But that will change soon." She shrugged. "I'm leaving soon and when I do - I mean leaving home, not leaving here - Well when I do, it will be different. And then it won't matter what I've read in books because it will a whole other adventure. Books are a bit of a problem because they - well, they make you think things. I mean, they make you imagine how things might be, and then you are confronted with your own sad reality and it seems nothing in comparison.

"Although I don't suppose you have that problem. Your life seems very exciting, and until now I have only been a glorified baby. Constance - my sister - seems to think that I'm not even grown enough to venture beyond Highwater alone. I think she's wrong."

Jet gasped at the mention of centuries. Centuries! That seemed both wonderful and completely painful. How could one person live so long and still seem... human? "You must be dreadfully bored," she said. She clapped her hand over her mouth, but it came too late. "Sorry. I didn't mean that in a bad way." But she wasn't sure how she did mean it, really.

Svana took the glass Jet poured for her and sipped it, as opposed to downing it in a single gulp. Leaving. That was something she could relate to, being held in one place for so long and then finally breaking free. "Congratulations on your upcoming escape. I can tell you from experience, there is nothing sweeter than breaking free of the place that has held you back for so long. Do you know where you're going?"

She was confronted with her own sad reality, and her eyes turned toward the table, mouth pinched in a hard line. There were so many times when she wanted to escape her own life, to be somebody else and have a different life. Not for a lack of excitement or responsibility, by any means.

"My life is less exciting than it might seem. Or, at least it was. Centuries can become terribly boring; you're not wrong about that. They're not supposed to be, but life has never been what I expected it to be. I've spent a lot of time waiting, trapped in the same place with the same people, just waiting." Her eyes raised and she touched a spot of dried blood on her face. "I'm done waiting. I'm not bored any longer."

Jet Devereux

Jet felt her heart flutter with excitement. She knew that being excited was almost sacrilegious given the circumstances that had led to this moment, but she couldn't help it. She couldn't help that the bonds had fallen away now and she would soon be free - even if that had meant her mother's death. She had long stopped pondering why she was so callous when it came to Precious Devereux's sudden nonexistence and now she was looking ahead. Eyes forward.

"I suppose I shall have been a great many places before I'm finished," Jet answered. "And I don't know really where I should begin except I suppose I should start with what I know. It's... I was going to say 'it's complicated' or 'it's a long story', but actually it's neither. My father will die if I do not intervene." Jet paused for a second, steeling herself; she did not know how this woman would react to the news of Caleb Devereux's situation, but she doubted she would be met with the same brand of disgust as she had been elsewhere. "He is on trial for treason. Actually, they say he killed my mother, but since she was a Duchess and she died of unnatural causes, it's somehow treason." Jet's light tone did not subdue the glint of anger in her eyes or the tightness of her own lips as she scowled. "Anyway, it does not matter so much where I go so long as I find somebody who can help him."

Jet wished she could have Svana's resolve, attitude and skills, but she saw that it was not all as easy as first appeared. Still, armour and a sword would go quite a way in boosting her confidence. She took another drink from the small glass.

The story sounded interesting, very political. For all Svana was at the heart of her people's politics, things were simple. People didn't change much in five hundred years.

"So you don't think your father did it? What kind of help are you looking for to get him out of it? And how do you intend on convincing people to come to your aid?" While the human culture appeared to have evolved quite a lot over the last few centuries, their general temperaments didn't seem to have altered much. They were violent, selfish, self-serving, and petty creatures. Somehow, those apparent faults were their greatest strengths. It amused her how effective their societies were. Jet's road to finding help didn't sound like an easy one, but she had no doubt it would be interesting.

Jet Devereux

Jet swallowed the rest of the liquid in her glass for fortification. Thinking about the road ahead made her stomach cramp and her chest feel tight. "Quite frankly, I don't think he has it in him to kill anybody. My parents, they weren't like others. They hardly spoke to one another, and when they did it always seemed so cold - but if you knew where to look for it, you could find the little tics. The ones that only develop after a life shared together. He didn't kill her. The problem is, I don't have the faintest idea who would want to hurt my mother." Jet shrugged and began to bite at her lower lip. "I was hoping that a trip to Brightbay might help. The Duke there - his son is to wed my sister... Politics, you know." Jet didn't want to say any more, for fear of jinxing herself. It was a long shot, but she had to try.

If Brightbay failed, then she didn't know what she would do. Not only was her father's life at stake, but so was her entire family.

Nodding, she listened with interest. Navigating political labyrinths had never been appealing to her, as necessary as it was. Svana preferred things to be up-front. However, she knew a thing or two about manipulation.

"Aye, politics," she mused with a snort, sipping more of her vodka. "Well, you're fighting an uphill battle, there. Humans aren't known for their selfless generosity. Threats and bribes go so much farther than loyalty or obligation." She hoped the girl had some bargaining chips in her pocket, or she was going to have a rough time of it.

Jet Devereux

"Bribes?" Jet hadn't even planned what she would do once she reached Brightbay but she had just figured that once she arrived she would know what to do. But she hadn't though about bribes, or about threats. And now she was worried. "Damn," she said. "I don't have anything to bribe anybody with. And that leaves threats and I'm basically useless in that department, too. I can't even do the basic Wind Charms like they can." She sighed.

"Anyway, you keep talking about humans like you're not one of them - and obviously you aren't, but I've never met anybody like you before. What are you? I don't mean that disrespectfully, either, but it must be better than being human."
She scowled.

"People are petty and selfish. Be sure you take that into account before you ask anybody's help," she snorted. The girl was in for a rude awakening to the human condition if she expected people to drop their lives to take care of her problems for nothing in return.

She smirked when Jet called her out on her race. Her hand lifted instinctively up to her pointed ear, and then trailed down her black-veined neck. Two distinctly inhuman traits. "I'm an elf, as a matter of fact. And whether or not it's better than being human, that's up to interpretation. I suppose I wouldn't trade you, given the chance, but neither would you trade me." Not if she knew the full story. Only an insane person would want her lot in life.

Rosselyn Cain

Rosselyn entered the tavern with a confident stride that faltered after a couple steps and came to an uncomfortable stop. Either this tavern had changed rather dramatically since the last time she'd visited, or something altogether unnatural had occurred. She was almost tempted to step back outside to assure herself that the sign hanging above the door had indeed proclaimed "The Bawdy Toad" in garish green letters. She was distracted from that thought however, by the bizarre sense that everyone here seemed just as confused as she was. She had the distinct realization that everyone here felt just as out of place as she did. She was also taken by the wide variety of characters inhabiting the place. The manner of dress seemed wildly varied, and most of them were styles she had never encountered before, and she had traveled to many, many places and explored countless and far flung cities. Never had she encountered people quite like this.

A little more cautious now, she began to edge her way in. She hoped that she could go unnoticed, though, she suspected everyone here was just as on edge as she, and would likely at least take note of her, to decide if she were a threat. She found herself doing the same with the people around her, noting weapons, their type, and how their owners wore or carried them. Rosse allowed her hand to drift nonchalantly to her belly, resting there, and in easy reach of her saber.
