{{I thought so, too! biggrin }}
Professor Markums smiled and gently wrapped her arm around Aurora's shoulders. "Well, Aurora, this is a Sphinx, and by his reaction, I'm assuming that he appreciates you telling both of us your name. He's very polite and a very interesting creature, very intelligent. He's one of the characters I like to talk with the most, even though he can't respond verbally. He can respond telepathically, though."
Markums smiled down at the cat and nodded her head toward him.
"Now, I can see the confusion in your eyes. Yes, this is the Spinx from Egyptian legend, but not quiet. The Egyptians were very much connected to magical creatures. They revered them, they wanted to protect them. So, they created false images of them with human heads and being the size of lions or larger. They drew and sculpted them so extravagantly and so falsely that they knew there was no way that people would believe that these creatures actually existed. So, no one would go hunting for one."

Aurora listened avidly to Professor Markums as she spoke of the pretty cat--a Sphinx, apparently--in front of her. The cat purred happily at Markums, a cat-like nod of sorts following some of her statements. He greatly enjoyed her praise; that much was evident.
"That's very nice of them," Aurora said. She hadn't thought people would be so nice to creatures, especially since she would've thought that people would consider themselves above 'animals', but this made her happy. Then, showing her wrist and the ankh now marked there, she asked, "What does this mean?" Of course, she wasn't actually speaking of the ankh itself; she knew that the ankh represented life in ancient Egypt.

Markums gently grabbed Aurora's wrist to look at the mark better and then gasped when she got a good look of it.
"Well my word... It looks as if the Sphinx has already marked you! He has chosen you to be his companion and he wants to be your familiar! That was quite fast. You must be quite a special girl to attract a Sphinx so quickly."
Professor Markums smiled softly when she thought of an idea. She released her light grip on Aurora's wrist and nodded in the direction of the Sphinx. "Try communicating with him telepathically. He might tell you his name and he might even tell you more information about his species. Although, be careful. These tricky characters might try to draw you into a battle of wits. They're mischievous that way."
Markums winked playfully at the Sphinx.

While this was all going on, Ever had finally walked slowly and carefully into the fenced in area. Not only was she nervous that no creature would want to be her familiar, but she was also very cautious of the Immortal Horses. She had seen them on Mt. Olympus and they were fierce. They had drawn many of the Gods' chariots or had carried the God directly to the Mount. You did not even look at the horse the wrong way if that horse did not belong to you. They were temperamental around Gods, and rightfully so.
And just as she had feared, the horses didn't seem to appreciate her, either. They probably sensed the blood of the Gods inside of her and some probably even recognized her. They neighed loudly, shook their heads, and began to walk backwards, to get away from Ever.
Ever sighed in frustration and shook her head. She mumbled, "Great... As if I wasn't feeling self conscious enough already today."
However, one of the horses did not back up. He did not show apprehension toward her. Nope. He showed anger. Passionate anger. And it was one of the fire horses. Oh hell... Ever knew who it was. She recognized him now and knew exactly whose horse it was. Ares....
Ever put up her hands and started to back up slowly. "Phobos... No. Phobos, calm down. I never once hurt you or even threatened you. I'm not like the rest of them. Your hatred toward me is totally unjustified and quite ridiculous."
Then, Phobos neighed loudly and reared onto his hind legs. Fire blazed from him and Ever shouted in fear. She covered her head and then ran out of the fenced area. Phobos chased her until she was well out of the class area and running toward the forest. Still hearing Ever's screams as she entered the forest, Phobos shook his fiery mane and neighed. The neigh almost seemed to sound like a laugh! He was quite proud of himself.

Aurora let out a small, "Oh," at the information. That was interesting, but it made things so much easier for her. Looking at the Sphinx, who seemed to be laughing at Markums' joke, she attempted to connect her mind to his.
Hello, Aurora. It was a pretty voice, a calming baritone. She liked it.
Hello, she responded. Her own voice sounded different in this setting.
The Sphinx nudged her hand, and she began to pet him, making his purring grow louder. Let's play a game. If you win, I will tell you my name. His voice sounded amused.
She smiled at him. She rather liked games, personally. Alright.
I shall go easy on you, as it is your first time going against a Sphinx. The taunting way in which he said that almost made her want to raise an eyebrow. "What walks on four legs in the morning, two legs in the afternoon, and three legs in the evening?"
Aurora thought about it for a moment. Presumably, since this was a game of wits, she could rule out the times as being literal--it was probably more to represent beginning, middle, and end. Something said that she had heard this riddle before, once upon a time, but she didn't know where. Four legs... something that crawled, then, by all technicality. Then it goes to two legs--it probably did not lose the other two; it probably was simply walking rather than crawling now. Hmm... Crawling to walking... then three legs. Well, that last part did confuse her, but she decided to make a guess.
A human?
The Sphinx laughed for a brief moment. Mmm, you are a smart one. I am glad I was not being foolish. Yes, a human. As your reward, I shall tell you my name--I am Altan*. He bowed playfully. It is a pleasure, Aurora.
Aurora smiled, continuing to pet him. "The pleasure is mine," she whispered. She looked at Professor Markums. "He's very nice. I like him."
((*Originally, I was going to use an Ancient Egyptian name, but I ended up using this instead because it has the same meaning (esentially) as Aurora, according to behindthename.com. It's Turkish.))

{{Ok. Hopefully see you later Secret! biggrin }}
Markums had heard the commotion near the horse area and had watched what transpired. Before she could cast any spells to protect the young girl, she was running off into the forest. Probably best for right now. The girl could pick a familiar during tomorrow's class, and Markums would make sure not to have the Immortal Horses in the fence next time.
It was odd, though, what the young girl had said before Phobos chased her off. It was as if she knew the horse. Maybe she had seen him in the forest before, but it was odd to think that the horse would have let the girl anywhere near him in the forest.
When she heard Aurora next to her, Markums turned her head back to her and smiled. "I am glad. If you choose to have him as your familiar, though, you'll have to be aware that he is quite possessive. He is fine around any family and friends you might have as long as you still spend a good amount of time with him. However you might have difficulties in the future, after you leave Bai Ching, if you try to have a boyfriend."

Altan let out a snort at that statement, but did not deny it. You are mine. It was a simple declaration, but Aurora raised an eyebrow, to which he simply tilted his head. Ah well, she supposed it did not matter at the moment.
"I think it will be fine. I can't imagine what would keep me from spending time with my own familiar, to be honest," she said, and then she held out her arms to pick the Sphinx up. He leapt into them happily, and she stood, holding him as if he were something truly precious.
You know, he mentioned, we could uphold a permanent connection, like what we had earlier, that would be easier on both of us. And if you were ever in trouble, I could come to your aid.
Glancing at Professor Markums, she paraphrased what he said. "...and that sounds very nice. How does--oh." Suddenly, she was very acutely aware of the fact that Altan was there, and of him as a sentient being. He was very happy, but seemed to be rather hungry.
Though she was not initially aware, Altan also could feel her in this acutely personal way; he knew that she was actually feeling quite happy on the inside, and that she was a shapeshifter. She seemed to maybe not be a full shapeshifter, though, but he could not quite place what else she was. He supposed that, at least for now, it did not matter. He very much liked this human. She was simple and straightforward, but still took the time to appreciate those other things like art and sewing.
He also learned much of her family, something that very, very few other people knew of for the simple fact that no one bothered to ask, so she never bothered to say. Of course, the flood of information slowed eventually, as she began to learn from him how to filter it and keep it to just a connection rather than a combination.
"This is nice," she commented.

In the forest, where Evermore stopped, the air shimmered for a moment and then a man appeared--a man who was not so much a man as a god. Ares.He laughed, a condescending and altogether unfriendly laugh. "Well, hello Evermore. Fancy seeing you here. Had a spot of trouble? That why you ran like a child?" ((I probably just totally screwed up... Please correct me if so. For everyone: the person I'm trying to get the character is the Ares here.

Ever recognized that voice immediately. Figures the owner of the horse would show up shortly after the horse chased her away.
She spun around and glared at the God. The God of War. She crossed her arms over her chest. "Oh how nice to see you again, Ares. And I wouldn't be running through this forest if it wasn't for your former damn horse. I never liked Phobos."

((lol, it's alright!))
Aurora thought for a moment, before nodding. "This connection... will there be any side-effects?"
Altan's tail tapped her hand. I could've told you that, he muttered, though she already knew that he wasn't completely sure of what all it would do himself. That is exactly why she had decided to ask.

Ares just let out a short laugh. "Yeah, well, don't worry your pretty little face 'bout that. He never liked you either." Ares smirked at her, a movement which truly seemed to fit him.
"Say, what're you doing at a school, anyway? Why do you need the knowledge these mortals possess?" It was obvious he didn't really think much of the 'mortal' knowledge.

Professor Markums tilted her head to the side, letting her blond hair fall over her shoulder in long curly tendrils. "Well, there are side effects that could develop. It's up to you if you view them as bad or not. I find them quite interesting."
She looked at the Sphinx and smiled. "If you spend enough time with him and connect with him enough, which I already see happening between you two, you could develop some of his characteristics and mannerisms, such as his cat eyes."

{{Awesome comment for Ares, Secret! lol!}}
Ever stared at Ares for a moment with disdain. Yes, Ares was insanely attractive, in a dark way. He was the God of War, after all. His smooth black hair and perfectly trimmed facial hair was very attractive. And she really liked the black leather pants, boots, and vest he always wore.
But he was still an a**.
Ever rolled her eyes at Ares and leaned against a tree as if she was already bored. "Ares, if you hate mortals so much and the knowledge they posses, then why the hell are you here?"
