Quote: t was pretty much an average day. The air was warm, the sun was shining brightly in the sky, and even the birds were singing a cheery tune. A normal day filled with you doing a few chores and errands. You had found yourself with some free time, which was why you had decided to take a bit of a stroll through the small park. A mundane day indeed. At least it was, until you had turned around at the sudden sound of pounding footsteps on the pavement behind you.
Your eyes widened as you took a step back on instinct, but it was far too late for that. The man, surprised brown eyes and hair from the quick glimpse that you had, slammed into you as effectively as a football player tackling a quarterback. It felt like you had been struck by a freight train. The air escaped from your lungs and your entire body was thrown back. One moment you had been standing, the next you were sprawled on the ground, groaning. A second groaned answered your own, the man who had hit you was on the rough pavement besides you. He mumbled a string of curses and wobbled to his feet.
Still moaning, you sat up and stared blankly at your body on the ground in front of you. You blinked for a few seconds as you recognized your clothes and your face.
Huh?
You wondered if you had hit the ground harder than you thought. Standing up, you stared down at the body. Yup. It was still yours. Again you blinked, and your brain finally caught up to what you were seeing.
"Wh-What the heck!" Panic flooded your systems as you stumbled away from your body. Were you dead? That was your body on the ground. Your breath increased until you were practically hyperventilating. Did ghosts even have to breath? Why weren't you floating? You brain scrambled with a chaotic mess of thoughts.
The man who had tackled you muttered another string of curses as he looked at you and then to your body on the ground. "Oh great. This just had to happen."
You gaped at him, "You can see me? Am I dead?" Staring at him, you became aware of something you had not noticed before. The man had a light blue glow to him. His form faded every few seconds before coming back into focus.
He scratched at his scruffy chin, "Not exactly, kid."
The sound of hooves thundering across pavement made the both of you look down the path. Despite the clear day, a wall of thick fog that was the size of a tree towered on the path. You could hear the shout of a man urging his horse onward. A silver chariot shot through the wall of fog, nearly slamming into you and the man. Your heart skipped a few beats as you stared into the black eyes of a black horse that had stopped inches from your face. Beside it, another black horse neighed a laugh at you.
"Halt right there!" A soldier in light blue armor that glowed a ghostly hue, jumped off of the chariot to the ground, and leveled his spear at your chest. His partner did the same to the man with the scruffy face who had crashed into you. You decided just to call him Scruffy Face.
Despite the soldier's words, you took a step back and raised your hands up in the air in surrender.
"What's going on?" The words jumbled out of your mouth into some incomprehensible heap.
The soldier blinked as it took him a moment to decipher what you had said, "You are arrested on grounds of thievery!" He grabbed you roughly by the arm before dragging you towards the chariot.
"W-Wait! I didn't do anything!" You cried out as he bound your wrists in silver glowing shackles and forced you onto the chariot. What the heck was going on here??
Within moments, Scruffy Face was by your side with a grim expression on his face. You stared at him, willing him to tell the soldiers that you had no part in this, but his mind was on a different track.
"I had no choice!" he cried out, "They forced me do it!" Scruffy Face pointed at you.
You gaped at him, "He's lying! I didn't steal anything!"
The guards traded looks and one even rolled their eyes. Keeping one hand firmly on your shoulder, the guard clicked his tongue, sending the horses into a trot. Ahead of you, a wall of fog bloomed into existence. It twirled and twisted as if it had a mind of its own.
The horses were trotting straight towards it. Craning your head back, you stared at where your body was collapse on the ground. The last thing you saw before being consumed by the fog was the slight rise and fall of your body's chest as it breathed. You body was thankfully still alive.
The fog was thick, so much so that you could not even see the guard standing right beside you. It seeped into your skin and mouth. It filled your entire essence until you thought you might drown from it. Just as pure panic began to threaten your mind, the fog cleared away.
A cool breeze whispered across your skin and you had to squint as bright sunlight flooded your eyes. A flow of people surrounded the chariot as it made its way down the cobblestone street. Buildings made up of golden brown brick lined the street.
Where were you?
Eyes wide, you stared at the thick flow of people walking to and fro. They wore clothes from different ages and places. Some wore elegant gowns; others wore top hats and long coats. It was like a massive Halloween party. But all of them, even the children running about, had a blue glow to them.
You stared down at yourself to see if you were glowing too. Just like the others, you had a bluish tinge radiating off of you.
"Where are we? Where are you taking me?" You questioned the guard beside you.
He rolled his eyes, "Save your words for the Magistrate, criminal. That is if you are lucky enough for him to even let you speak. We do not tolerate thievery in this Spirit City." The last part he practically growled out.
This was not looking good. Clearly the soldier was not going to help you out, so you turned to Scruffy Face. Sure he had tried to sell you out, but maybe you could convince him to look deep down into his heart and tell the truth.
Scruffy Face caught you staring at him with a puppy eye type look and glared at you. As if he could read your mind, he said, "It ain't happening, kid. I'm going to do what's good for me. If you were smart, you would do the same."
So much for that plan. You stared ahead to where a large building loomed. Unlike the other buildings, it was made of white marble stones and was at least five stories high. The windows were barred by silver bars that glowed just like the shackles on your wrist did. The silver glowing gated entrance swung open by the help of two guards as you approached.
Your heart pounded as you fell into the shadow of the tall building. You felt your hope of getting help slip further away as the chariot passed through the gates and they closed with a resounding clank. Inside was a grassy courtyard, which was significantly quieter than the hustle bustle of the streets outside. Soldiers paced the outskirts, guarding the wooden doorways that led inside.
The horses came to a stop in the middle of the grassy area, immediately bending their heads to the luscious grass below. The soldier pulled you down from the chariot and pushed you forward towards a particular doorway. Scruffy Face was obviously not pleased with the treatment as he spat at the soldier when the man had pushed him forward.
"Walk." The soldier pushed you again when you did not obey immediately.
Grudgingly, you began walking to the doorway. Just as you were about to reach it, the door opened and two people walked out of it. One was a man well within his forties. His body was built as sturdy as the walls around you and he wore thick leather armor. His black hair was buzz cut and his eyes were a brilliant green. However, that was not the only thing that was green. His entire form seemed to glow with the emerald color. It tinted over his entire body and the air around him like a second skin.
If that did not surprise you, then the girl at his side did. She was young, just shy of fifteen. Her sundress was the color of the sky and her hair the color of untouched snow. The girl's eyes were a shade of blue, so light, that you had not even known it was possible. While the man besides her glowed green, she glowed with a soft white light. Enough to be noticed in a crowd, but not overly so that it was painful to the eyes.
The two soldiers behind you immediately straightened and lifted their chins.
"Lord Magistrate. Lady Phantom." One of the soldiers greeted with a salute, which was quickly mirrored by the second soldier.
The glowing green man, clearly the Magistrate, nodded his head in greeting. "I assume you were just coming to see me?" He turned to the girl at his side, "My apologies for this small interruption."
The Phantom laughed softly with amusement, "All is well, Magistrate. Do not let our small chat take priority over your duty." Her gaze slipped away from him and onto you. Her eyes widened slightly in surprise, as she looked you over from head to toe.
"We caught the thieves, Lord Magistrate." The soldier behind you stated.
The Magistrate frowned, "Two of them? The reports only stated that there was only one thief."
"We found them together on the fringes of the Living Realm." You didn't have to look at the soldier behind you to know that he was glaring at you. He really did not like you for some reason.
The Phantom laughed behind her hand after hearing the guard's words, drawing the group's attention.
"What is it, Lady Phantom?" the Magistrate inquired with a puzzled expression.
She pointed at you, "That is no thief. I am surprised you did not recognize it yourself, Magistrate. That person is a spirit walker."
All eyes fell on you and you stared blankly back. Spirit walker? You had never heard of such a thing.
The Phantom saw your bewilderment and her gaze grew cold as she turned to Scruffy Face. "This child has no experience with spirit walking. I do believe you have something to say."
Scruffy Face shifted uncomfortably, "Yeah...The kid here was sorta in the way. I was switchin' between realms when I accidentally crashed into them. I've never seen the soul ditch the body so fast." He added with a slight chuckle as he tried to make light of what had happened.
The Phantom's cold expression did not alter; Scruffy Face stopped chuckling. The two soldiers paled as they realized that they were in trouble as well. One removed your shackles and quickly moved away.
"Our apologies, Lord Magistrate. Lady Phantom. We did not realize." Both soldiers bowed low, faces still pale.
The Magistrate sighed as he rubbed at his temple, "Such a mess,"
"Quiet so..." the girl mumbled as she stared at you in thought.
"I'm sorry to ask you of this, but could you take the Spirit Walker back? You can move between the realms much easier than we can. I do not want another incident occurring with this situation and my men are low on energy," the Magistrate asked hopefully.
The Phantom was silent for a few seconds as she took in the situation and her options. More seconds passed making you wonder if she was going to refuse.
Finally she spoke, "I shall, but only because you are a friend. Do not worry on reimbursing me for the energy used. I am in a kind mood this day."
The Magistrate smiled and bowed at the waist, "My thanks, Lady Phantom. Tomorrow let us meet once more to continue our chat."
She smiled, "On the morrow then."
The girl motioned for you to follow her as she walked into the heart of the courtyard. Her form began to fade until you were able to see the building through her form. You watched with wide eyes as the color drained from her dress until it was as white as her hair. A silver mask flickered into being over her eyes; it made her seem so much older than before. You watched as a pillar of fog began to form in the air in front of you. The fog contorted angrily as it was forced into the shape of a doorway by the Phantom's will.
"Shall we?" the Phantom held out her hand.
You stared at it wondering how you could hold something that was incorporeal. A second later, you chided yourself for hesitating. After all that had happened to you, you were not sure what was possible and impossible in the world. You took her hand and followed her into the fog doorway.
The park was just as you had left it. Neatly trimmed grass, sunny bright sky, and a collapsed body on the ground. Staring around, you were surprised that no one had called an ambulance or even noticed your fallen body. For some reason, this got you really mad. What if you really had died? Your murderer would have ditched the country before someone even discovered your corpse! You tried to kick a rock, but your foot passed through it. Great.
"I apologize for this mess," the Phantom said, making you look up.
A spirit criminal guy had crashed into you, sending your soul flying from your body. You got that part, however you could not help but wonder about the city. What was that place? You voiced the question aloud.
"Ah, that was a Spirit City. It is in a realm close to this one, but only spirits who have grown strong enough have the ability to cross into it," the Phantom began, "The Cities are created when only the strongest of spirits use their will and energy to form one." She explained, pausing now and again as she chose her words carefully.
This was...not what you expected. Spirits, other realms? You rubbed your head from a growing headache. You lifted your head in thought, how was it possible to feel pain without a solid body anyways? Maybe you were actually just imagining it?
You groaned as your headache increased because the hundreds of questions that had popped up because of your current train of thought.
"It can be rather complicated, I'm afraid." the Phantom softly laughed. She moved towards your collapsed body, growing serious once more. "To return all you must do is touch your body."
Moving near your body, you stared down in thought. You had so many more questions. If you returned now, would you be able to see her again? You looked at her and she tilted her head to the side as she saw your hesitation.
With a small smile and mischievous wink, she placed her hand on your shoulder, and pushed you. Your eyes widen as you wobbled, paddling your arms through the air as you tried to regain your balance. It was useless though. You could feel the pull of your body as it summoned you. It was like a magnet and you a piece of metal. Your vision turn black as you fell onto your body.
When you opened your eyes, you were staring up at the sky. What had happened? Stifling a groan, you sat up, rubbing your bleary eyes. Your body felt heavy and sluggish. Had you fallen asleep? Looking around, you noticed you were on the middle of the path in the park, an odd place to fall asleep.
Stiffly, you stood up and brushed off your clothes. Yawning into your hand, you began to walk to the entrance of the park. Although you had just woken up from your sleep, you felt extremely tired. Images flashed through your mind: A city with chariots. A scruffy face man. A soldier that glowed green and a smiling white haired girl. You ran a hand through your hair, what a weird dream...
--- Phantom Anon * i vaguely remember the place from the other dream, though i can remember more this time. i wondered if it were possible for me to just explore the place, instead of falling into it. a phrase popped into my head, half remembered from the dream spirit walker. was i one of those in the dream?. and there was that girl again, haunting my dreams.and i remember a thief, but not what he was stealing* ( emotion_kirakira i get more! the city's such a cool place. your writing is so amazing. thank you so very much! )
