"Sounds lovely." Terryn's father finally looked away, leading the duchess out towards the sitting room. She finally exhaled, slouching slightly into a comfortable position and retracting her hand. "We are not going to be able to keep up faked formalities and idle chatter much longer, you know."

"I don't see why we need to. We only really need to for less than a fortnight now, and if you really do want to behead me before then, we can always end things a bit early. Not much, mind you," added Marcus, stretching his back slightly and stifling a yawn behind his fist.

"That is not exactly what I meant." She waved him over and took a seat in her chair again. "I believe we need to..." She made an almost pained expression. "...begin showing romantic interest. It will be rather difficult for us to end a relationship that we have yet to start."

"Oh." Marcus looked at Terryn, and shrugged. "Won't be a problem from my end," he informed her. "I'll find some hitherto nonexistant attractiveness about you. The Duchess shouldn't be all that surprised. The Earl, however..."

"The Earl will be a problem. He knows I do not show affection. And someone with your deplorable physical and intellectual features..." She looked at him analytically before shaking her head disappointedly. "No, it would be rather impossible I am afraid." She sighed. "Unless we attempted to set up fortuitous circumstances of some sort."

Marcus raised an eyebrow. "Well, do tell me about these fortuitous circumstances, seeing as I have 'deplorable intellectual features', which are, clearly, nowhere near your standards."

"Clearly." Terryn grinned and drummed her fingers on her thigh. "Well...we could...we could accidentally fall asleep together and have them catch us..."

It sounded ridiculous at first, but it was certainly feasible, and required virtually no effort from Marcus. "Alright." He grinned roguishly, straightening up, and bowed formally to Terryn. "I'd be delighted to sleep with you."

Terryn, not to be flustered by such vulgarity, simply smiled and promptly dug her heel into his toe, the same complacent expression on her face. "Lovely."

Eh. Such blandness. It was much more fun when they made some sort of response. "Really," said Marcus, shaking his head, retracting his toe. "How your father stands you is beyond me." He glanced behind him and saw that the earl and the duchess were still engaged in conversation. "When are we going to do this?"

Terryn shrugged. "It would be best to wait a few days, to not seem too anxious, but no longer than a fortnight. Perhaps..." She thought for a moment. "Three days hence? We can meet in the court gardens. They are guarded by the king's men, so I am sure my father will feel safe allowing me to be there without him."

Marcus blinked. He'd already arranged a 'meeting' with the count's daughter three days from now, and wasn't about to cancel it. "Three days seems like it took planning. Two days is overzealous. Shall I see you four days hence, in the court gardens?"

Terryn nodded. "Four days it is, I shall inform my dance instructor that I must cancel our lesson." She smiled. Terryn ahted her dance instructor with a passion, ever since her father had hired him to teach her "the grace and style of the waltz" two months ago. The boy was always making advances, despite being a half foot shorter and almost a year younger than she was.
