@Cam: Yeah, the wedding was great and boy did we party! xd I'm suprised my dress managed to stay together since so many people stepped on the hem at the end of the day. I'm glad I chose the locally, handmade dress, instead one of those mass production, italian dress that you can't know where those are actually made. I'll post a picture when I get them from our photographer. 3nodding

About the weight and height ratio. Oxfordian doctor have made a new calculation to the BMI that takes the height and thus muscle mass extortion more into account. The new formula would be (where BMI of approx 25 would be "ideal weight")
1,3 x weight(kg) x height(cm)

For me the BMI stays relatively same since I'm not that tall, but my husband, who is bit under 2 meter in height, the calculation gives completely different "ideal weight" than the normal ones. My husband has also a lot of muscle mass and if he would try to get to the normal BMI then he would be way too skinny.

I think there is something wrong with that equation.

1.3 x 120.2 x 190 = 29,689.4

I don't think my BMI is around 30,000... rofl

Hello everyone! biggrin

Hey guys! heart

So a while back several of you gave me a great reading list for manga (I haven't really taken advantage of it yet like I should), I'm hoping you can help me again. My son (who is 14) has just started to read it and loves it! But we need more titles that are good for his age. So far he's read all of the Full Metal Alchemist series and Dragon Ball Z. Can you list others that he might like?

Welcome back!

What about Bleach? Apparently the manga is a wee bit more violent than the anime, but I think it's still appropriate for teens.

I dont remember if i made any suggestions.

So forgive me if i repeat myself.

I suggest :

Neon Genesis Evangelion by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto. It's an alternate retelling of the tv series.

Bakuman : a story about these two kids that want to be manga artists. It's like going behind the scenes in the lives of manga artists.

Negima!? by Ken Akamatsu

Love Hina by Ken Akamatsu

S.S. ASTRO by Negi Banno

Ghost in the Shell by Masamune Shirow.

Appleseed by Masamune Shirow.

Rurouni Kenshin. ( i wish i could finish it . I m not sure if they sell the individual volumes anymore. Only the really huge ones.)

Oishinbo : its about food. Reading it will make you hungry.

Thanks for the suggestions! heart I'll definitely look for those at the library (we have an excellent library system).

I also heard that Death Note is really good but may be geared more toward older teens/adults. What is your opinion on that one?

Let me know if you can think of any more smile

I loved Death Note. If you don't mind adult situations and gore, Berserk and Hellsing are great.

If you get him ghost in the shell and he squirrels himself away, just shout, "Stop masturbating to those two pages of robo-lesbians!" He'll be embarrassed for your entertainment.

Battle Angel Alita, Blame!, Chibi Vampire, Cannon God Exaxxion, and D. Gray Man are also good.

I read a lot of manga though, so I could literally list probably 300 series. XD

If he gets into sci-fi novels, I can suggest the following five of my favorites:

Childhood's End by Arthur C. Clark
A World Out of Time by Larry Niven
Big Planet by Jack Vance
Embers by Carl Efkin
The Dosadi Experiment by Frank Herbert

Whoops, you are right. There is an error in the formula. redface I re-checked and I had the classical copy/paste error. sweatdrop So the correct equation would be

1,3 x weight(kg) / height(m)^2,5

How wonderful that he has discovered reading! Maybe you could try if he would like books as well. biggrin I would recommend Terry Pratchet and with smaller hesitation Neil Gaiman. I think especially Terry Pratchets humour will sink well into a 14 year old kid. It certainly did for me when I started to read his book at that age. With Neil, I would first look at the book before letting your kid read it. Some of his stories require bit more mature and sinister mind so I wouldn't give all of his stuff to a young kid. I think The Graveyard Book and Odd and the Frost giants would be something you could look into.

Oh and don't hesitate to introduce him to classics like Jules Verne. His adventure books would be certainly suitable for young boy like your kid. Around the world in 80 days, Journey to the center of the earth, Mysterious Island... all excellent adventure stories. 3nodding

edit: So I got back from my honeymoon trip yesterday and here's few pictures from Visby, the island near Sweden where we spent almost a week. whee

He has been an avid reader (of books) for a long time now. It's just recently that he's discovered manga. wink (I can see though how my awkward wording in my earlier post might have been confusing)

Since his mother (hehe) is already a fan of Neil Gaiman, my son and his sister have already read Coraline, The Graveyard Book, and Odd and the Frost Giants. Odd was especially fun because we had just finished reading about fairy/folk tales from different countries. We also happily have several Terry Pratchett books on our bookshelf (I seem to recall that you and I both enjoy a lot of the same types of books!) smile

Anyhoo -- the reason I ask about manga is that although I'm able to recommend a lot of books to him, I'm not as familiar with manga and which ones are appropriate for his age.

@Lilygwen - btw! How was your trip? The pics are gorgeous!! I hope you and your new hubby had a fantastic time!!

And FYI to everyone - I'm going away on yet another summer trip! (yeesh! this summer has been hectic for me). We're leaving later today and won't be back until late on the 18th. The good news is that after this one that's it for the season and I'll be a happy homebody for a while. lol

I hope you all enjoy your week!

Not just Tibetans, it's a Buddhist holiday. I don't remember its name. My husband would know.
