I
I was going to take my cat Neko outside today, when my other cat Stripey went out the door too. Neko has to be on a leash when we take them outside because he gets scared easily and we have a lot of roads near our house but Stripey is usually pretty good.
When they got outside Stripey went to the other end of the house right away so I took Neko over so I could watch them easily. They munched on a plant for a long time and I wondered how I was going to bring them inside. Then all of a sudden, something invisible to me spooked them and Stripey tried to run away from the house. I got him right away but I had to let go of Neko's leash. As soon as I did, he started running in the opposite direction. Since I was more worried about Neko, I let Stripey down, who then ran in the same direction. Neko stopped near the back porch because he doesn't like walking with the harness on, but he was still really scared. When I picked him up, he struggled a lot but I managed to get him in the house. I found Stripey calmed down on the other side of the house sitting under a bush.

When I went back inside I found that I had scratches on my leg and hand from when I picked up Neko. It's a good thing I was wearing gloves and heavy jeans. These might be the worst accidental animal injuries I've received.

I wonder what spooked them so bad? Cats are weird.

Perhaps the plants were haunted by demon cats who told them to get the hell off their food?

My cat Pi is like that too. We had her out on a leash once--and this jackass on a motorcycle came past and backfired right in front of our house. Pi freaked out, broke the leash and collar--and took off for the door.

We have too inside cats that we let go outside on somedays. If we don't have them on leashes, they run away. Mostly Cricket...because she is an idiot.

Leading me to my second question:

What led people to the belief that it's okay to let your cats roam around outside?

All animals are naturally outdoor creatures.

Of course, cars aren't naturally occurring enemies.

Most experts say you should keep your cats inside. biggrin Indoor cats live longer and face less chance of disease.

We do keep our cats inside. But it's just a nice treat for them to let them go play in the backyard for awhile.
