The Duchess looked sadly after her friend. He was taking it more badly than he had the death of Terryn's mother. "Do you think that he will be alright, Terryn?"

"I can not say..." Terryn sighed, holding Marcus tightly as she watched his father take off. "The only reason he so strong last time was because I think he knew he needed to still take of me. Now...what has got left?" She let another tear fall, looking at Marcus sadly. "Maybe this was a mistake."

Marcus nodded in spite of himself, frowning. "We were much too reckless." He started down the steps, looking downcast. "I never would have thought..."

"I know..." Terryn stopped midway down the staircase, taking a moment to sit and break into a fresh round of sobs. "Do...do you want to..." She choked back a sob, drowning the end of her sentence.

Marcus hesitated. "I don't want to." He sat next to Terryn and rubbed her arm. "You know that...that is the last thing I want to do." He looked back up the stairs, and saw the Duchess turn to leave. "But if you think that we should..."

Terryn shook her head, dabbing at her eyes with her sleeve. "No..." It was amazing the way they didn't need to finish their sentences around each other to be understood. "You know that I do not want to..."

"I do know." Marcus sighed, and it sounded like he was forcing himself to speak when he spoke next. "But if you think that it would be the best course of action..."

Terryn just shook her head more forcefully. "No." She felt stupid for even suggesting it. "My father is right. I mean...my mother died young, what if the same thing happens to me? We need to take advantage of the time we have."

Marcus shook his head firmly. "No. That's not--" He frowned still more deeply, and he cleared his throat. "That's not at all what I was suggesting. Time has nothing to do with this."

"Then..." Terryn fell silent, looking at him for a moment with a deep hurt in her eyes. She leaned forward and kissed him gently, though she let it linger for a good minute. "Marcus...I love you. You know that. I need to be with my father, but I need you all the same."

"You would have me," protested Marcus, "even if we were not married." He looked up at the ceiling. "I do not mean to sound as though I were in favor of this idea. I am not. But...your father's need of you seems more urgent than mine, at the moment."

"I know..." Terryn sighed, resting against him. "We could always just delay the move. I think my father would be even more distressed if he was the reason for his daughter's unhappiness as well as his own."

Marcus swallowed. "We could. But I don't think I could bear to stay here for more than a few weeks, to be honest." He cracked his knuckles. "Let us retire now. We will think more about this in the morning."

Terryn nodded, following him with her head bowed. When they finally got in bed, she had settled herself some, though not by much. She held on to Marcus for a while, as if afraid he might decide to leave if she let go.

Marcus did not pretend to fall asleep. There was little use in pretending when it was so clear what the matter was. He stared at his ceiling, jaw set. "I wish that we had waited."
