Terryn shut her eyes tightly, trying to stifle a grin and a laugh at the bedsheets comment. "Oh Marcus...you are terrible...just completely terrible." She glanced up, her face no longer strong enough to supress her emotions as she saw the smile on his face.

Marcus shrugged loftily, encouraged by this. "I don't see what you find so amusing. Stains do happen, you know." He sounded like his grandmother, and his imitation had been perfected by years and years of nagging.

"Oh, I am sure they do." Terryn covered her mouth with her hand, not sure why she found this so amusing. "After all, you might spill perfume on the comforter." Her smile let Marcus know that she was fully aware they were not talking about perfume.

Marcus grinned. She was no better than he was. "Exactly. That's why I try to keep perfume...closer to the intended area. It's not of any use on the comforter."

Terryn nodded firmly. "Oh I quite agree. Well...unless..." She trailed off, her grin leaving the end of her sentence very open for interpretation.

Marcus swallowed a laugh. "You prefer your perfume elsewhere, Terryn?" He was fighting to keep a straight face, and it was a losing battle. "Very interesting. Do tell."

"Well on my handkerchief of course." Terryn looked at him incredulously, as though the idea of fragrances being anywhere but the body or a small piece of fabric was absolutely absurd. "Where do you put your cologne?"

Terryn was fast asleep by the time they pulled back up to the manor, snuggled comfortably into Marcus's chest. The sun was not yet rising, but the sky seemed to be starting to lighten.

The Duchess and earl, meanwhile, had fallen asleep in the Duchess's armchairs, worn out from polishing off two full kettles. She stirred a few times before opening her eyes. She didn't want to wake the earl, and peered outside. "Marcus."

"Hrmm?" The earl looked up, not having been in a deep sleep to begin with. "Have they returned?"

The Duchess nodded. "Yes." She began pacing. She hadn't expected their return quite so soon. Even if she had, she would not have known what to do. "What can we possibly say to them?"

"You think of something." The earl was not in the mood for planning anything at the moment and just wanted to get some rest that wasn't coming easily.

The Duchess looked over her shoulder sympathetically. "Yes..." She hurried into the entrance. Perhaps she could warn the children that way, use that time to deliver the news.

"Hmmm...Marcus?" Terryn stirred lightly, feeling the carriage lift slightly as the luggage was loaded off of it. "Marcus..." She yawned, blinking her eyes open as she raised her head. "I think we are home..."
