It was in the bag. He wasn't intimidated at all by some hot pierced guy with one of his favorite pokemon. Anyways Ziva..but Ziva was hurt from the Rattata fight. "Lacey" he said motioning for the Treecko The Treecko nodded softly and stepped up to the front. Marcus hid his surprise when the Aron outspend it and hit with a tackle. Usually Treecko was a fast pokemon "nice" he said grinning at Mchotstuff "Lacey honey you okay?" he asked grin staying on his face when the grass and poison type nodded "use mega drain" The Treecko began to glow as did the Aron, it was lifted by the energy of the move and when the brightness faded shooting into Lace the Aaron was fainted. "Okay..time for Skarmory"

Marcus hesitated leaving Lace in or switching. She seemed good to go but he sort of wanted to try battling with Reina. They hadn't battled together since before his graduation. he liked playing strategic, he wasn't a fan of risks in battle but "Reina switch out" His Kingdra came out in a beam of red light looking down at everyone in the makeshifts battling ring like the queen she was name after "I uh..I found you a battle" Marcus said with a grin laughing when Reina huffed out water. "Let's start with Leer" the guy said and it put Marcus inmediatly on edge. That was a long term strategy it was a status lowering attack. It was something he would do. Need to end this fast "Water Gun" he said grinning as the Kingdra inhaled and let out a jet of water that told him the Skarmory had fainted long before he saw him land. "A battle ring? Really Alden?" "Hey it's a really tiny town...and he was cute" "Oh Mew you really are my brother" Marcus rolled his eyes, biting back a retort about how he had spent the majority of his high school career trying to convince Harvey of just exactly that. That would be going too far and it was behind them. "and you used Reina" Harvey said somewhere between incredulous and..impressed? Marcus felt like he could relax at least. "It's not like I had her use Whirlpool" he said sniggering a bit and then some more when Harvey joined him. "Alright well at least you're training" Marcus frowned "Since when do you like battling" he said because really as a breeder Marcus had heard all too much about Harvey's distaste for 'battleheads' it was one of those things he had just come to accept about his brother. "I don't" Harvey said "but if you're really serious about this." Marcus sat up straighter. Harvey took notice. "If you're really serious about getting answers Alden...the league might be a good resource. If you battle..and you win badges. You might find people who can help you." Marcus thought about that..the league did have a lot of control over things. Not to mention you needed badges just for access to some training items. And it would make for a strong team..and a good cover as to what he was doing. "So take on the gyms" he said "Take on the gyms" Harvey repeated. Marcus let out breath. He didn't mind battling, heck he had just had fun battling but. But he had level five and ten pokemon. And he had to take on the gyms. But only one of them would know he dropped out of the Ranger program-took a gap year thank you very much ...and might have an idea why. Marcus jogged alongside RB making sure he kept pace with the bug Pokemon. While he was an amazing addition to the team ( he needed to hug his friend seriously) he was still fairly low leveled. Harvey had been right..in more ways than one. He needed a team he could rely on and for that he needed them to train. "Good job bud!" he said jumping up "you're getting faster" RB for his part buzzed along and looked quite pleased with himself. Marcus had forgotten how much running could do for him. Walking always helped center him it was true but running...running made him shed anxiety in a way very few things could. Well there is the other one but I can't exactly do that here. after all his room at the Poke center didn't come with a kitchen and you kind of needed one to stress bake. He knew better than to look around for the same battling ring, it had been a fun way to let out steam ( its not like they were Rockets) but he knew better than to expect them to gather in the same place twice. It was still an unregulated battle as far as the league was concerned after all. So he had opted to go running in the mornings, and taking Harvey's words to heart had decided to take RB with him. Scizors were known for their speed after all. "Soon you'll be faster than a speeding bullet, just pow pow pow" he said mimicking the way Scizors punched with their pincers. RB for his part seemed pleased raising his arms and mimicking Marcus' mimicking "Yeah..like that"

Taking a sip of water at the center Marcus came back out, letting out the rest of his Pokemon as he had been doing every morning since he arrived here. "Okay Toothless you're with us" he told the tiny snake Pokemon "common dude you'll fly afer me and RB it'll build endurance" Toothless looked right down insulted to be told he couldn't perch on his shoulder so Marcus relented some "You can perch there for the rest of the day after" he said to which the electric type was a lot more receptive. "okay Plato you and Ziva spar against each other. Lace and Reina that leaves you two" Both Lace and Reina being the oldest in the party-andReina in particular having known him as a kid both gave him looks that gave their opinion on him telling them what to do. "Just..please" he said grinning when the pokemon caved. "Awsome okay. Toothless, RB let's go" and with that Marcus was off. His assessment of New Bark hadn't been off, the town was small. It was small enough he could make a running path through it without losing track of his Pokemon. He kept a standard pace, not wanting to make the younger Pokemon go faster than they were used to all at once. As always when he ran his mind became sharper, his problems seemed to melt. He wasn't thinking about his friend being missing or about the fact that he had baby Pokemon to train or about the seventeen calls from his mother. He was just running. He could hear RB next to him the buzzing of his flying was loud specially compared to the softer sound of Toothless as he flew. Marcus started on his second lap grinning at the pokemon as they followed him.

Marcus slowed down as he rounded on his fourth lap slowing to a job. Next to him the Pokemon did the same. That was good. If they learned the rythim and when to slow down and speed up it would become ingrained and faster and longer runs would be easier on them. Man it's like training Valiant Phillip and Squeeze all over again. he thought thinking back the Pokemon he had trained while in school. They had been around the same level as this party. Though at least none of them tackle me the ground...at least not yet. Looking around as he and the Pokemon who had run with him took a well earned break he thought about how to best go about beating Faulkner. The obvious answer was to focus on training Toothless due to type advantage but he didn't like the idea of pining everything on one Pokemon. I wish I would have thought to catch that Geodude when I saw him, he thought wishing he could slap himself above the head and not look stupid. He knew of course he knew a Geodude would be good against birds but at the time he had just been so focused on leveling up his team. With a sigh he watched as his team trained. Ziva was trying to land a scratch on Plato who kept dodging and trying to tackle. Lace meanwhile was trying to land a pound attack even though Marcus could have told her from training with his old team Reina wasn't new to having to dodge. At least everyone's training right now.

Drinking some more water, Marcus let out a breath. Last night had been hard. He'd had the same dream of Rey calling out to him. Ever since a psychic Pokemon had gone into his brain at school carnival he had been prone to nightmares. Back then it had been his parents fighting, the old house they lived in caving in. After his father's death that had become the theme ( Harvey and Elaine and even Ray had helped him through them) But lately it had been Rey, ever since..ever since graduation it had been Rey. Rey screaming for help, Rey drowinng or falling or.. He took a breath to ground himself. The way Harvey and the school counselor had taught him. He had been having dreams of Rey. Toothless had taken to shining like a nightlight when he woke up but it was still..hard. Last night had been..hard. But running had helped. Harvey had been the one to suggest it back during grade school when the nightmares started and he had to hand it to his brother it always cleared his head. He saw Toothless try to use wrap on an unsuspecting Hoothoot and quickly started walking towards them "Toothless..Toothless wait" he said though he stopped when he saw how strong the wrap seemed to be. The Hoothoot let out a growl attack which..probably weakened it some but still "..wow" he said gesturing for RB to fly closer to them. Just in case. Toothless seemed to have in hand until the Hoothoot let out another attack. It opened its mouth and et out a cry that seemed to echo everywhere despite them being out in the open "Woah! Okay" Marcus said as Toothless cried out in pain, alright switch out. But the pokemon refused, binding the Hoothoot more tightly and the Hoothoot just seemed to use a cute growl rather than another attack. "Alright..okay but you need to-" Too late the Hoothoot fired off a tackle that had Toothless sprawling on the ground "Okay...okay" Marcus said rushing to check the little pokemon over. After seeing that it was fine, only fainted Marcus signaled for RB to get in there.

Marcus sat on the table outside the poke center looking down at Toothless who despite having no lips seemed to be doing a perfect immiatation of the human expression known as pouting. "You need to be more careful bud" he said still trying to make sure the little pokemon was okay "I know you wanna get stronger and get like actual physical attacks but you can't" He jumped back when electricity started to gather in the snake pokemon's mouth and let lose in a perfect thunder wave "Wooaaaaahh Toothless! Ohmygosh!" Marcus said picking up the snake pokemon and hugging it "you did it holy Moses you did it!" he said laughing when the little pokemon bumped his head against his and nuzzled him before claiming the spot on his shoulder. "You still have to be careful tho" he said walking over to where the other pokemon were still training. "Okay guys break time let's go eat" he said as took out a few bento boxes with pokemon food. He really needed to start looking for lodgings that came with kitchens. Buying dinner from the mart was costing him a pretty penny. For today however he would eat his food under a tree with his team. "common let's eat."

Marcus smiled as he saw Lace curl up next to him soaking up the sun as the other Pokemon finished eating. His own sandwich and chips was long since gone. He leaned back reaching to out pet Lace and chuckling when Toothless zoomed down to curl up on his chest. He reached back up to pet the little snake Pokemon too. Ziva was still gobbling up her food and RB had settled down next to him. Plato was still eating too. "I hope we can find somewhere to let Reina out soon" he murmured with a pang. SPending time with his Pokemon was fun, one of his favorite things but he couldn't help but feel guilty that the KIngdra couldn't come out and partake on the team bonding. There didn't seem to be a lot of bodies of water in New Bark-at least not any that were big enough for the dragon type to be in. I'll make it up to her, he thought putting his hands behind his head. His eyes started closing of his own accord and he didn't fight it..,maybe next town..maybe I can find a lake there.

Marcus shot awake gasping for breath barely registering the cries of his Pokemon as he displaced them. He brought a hand to his chest as his heart beat at double speed and he struggled to catch his breath. It was that dream again it was.. He foced himself to try to take a full breath as he became more aware that he was in fact not stilll in that nightmare. 1,2,3 in..1,2,3 out. He spent a good minute just trying to catch his breath as his heartbeat started to slow down. "its...its okay" he said still catching his breath as the Pokemon crowded around "its alright kids..its.." He gasped again bringing his head down and focusing on his breathing again. It was fine, it was just a dream, he was fine. "It's ..it's okay"

Marcus took a bit longer to himself. Eventually his heart slowed down. Eventually his breathing evened out. He looked up when a claw touched his shoulder, trying his best to smile at RB as the bug Pokemon looked down at him. Scizor weren't known for being particularly expressive, still Marcus could tell that he was showing concern. "I'm..I'm okay" bud he said letting out a breath "just..had a bad dream" Shaking the last of it out-or at least trying to, the boy stood up and stretched, signaling for his Pokemon to do the same. "come on let's clean up here" he said picking up the empty containers that their impromptu lunch picnic had left. He paused to pet Ziva on the head smiling when the totodile jumped up and down. She was still very young, he needed to make sure she ate enough. "We still have some time for training before the sun goes down" he said throwing the empty containers in a nearby trash bin. The Pokemon seemed unsure ( well RB and Klow at least Ziva was cheering at the prospect of a battle and Lacey just looked confused) but after a beat seemed to become convinced and followed their trainer. It didn't take long for them to find a new opponent. Yet another Hoothoot. Marcus scanned it in his pokedex knowing that the date would be sent to Harvey to back up the claim that he was on a research mission. "Alright Toothless you're up front and center" he said The little serpent Pokemon seemed thrilled to finally get to come out first on a battle and leapt from where he was wrapped around Marcus' arm so that he was facing the Hoothoot. Before Marcus could call out an attack the Hoothoot let out a growl. Marcus sighed glad that at least they hadn't gotten hit with a physical attack right out the bat. "let's do a thunder wave" he ordered Toothless shot gave a 'low!' lighting up with electricity as it prepared to shoot off a wave of lighting. Marcus cheered when he saw the telltale signs around the Hoothooot that told him the pokemon was paralyzed "Alright awesome! Marcus watched as Toothless' wrap attack continued to hurt the Pokemon. The new attack really was a game changer for the Klow as it was able to paralyze opponents before he could attack. Still wish he could tackle, the boy thought but eh we can work with this. The Hoothoot used Growl again and Marcus bit back his frustration. Wrap didn't do that much damage to begin with, having an attack that lowered that was gonna drag this battle out. "It's okay bud, use wrap again" he said not letting his frustration color his voice. His battle teachers in the academy had always said that Pokemon were usually in sync with their trainers and emphasized the importance of keeping your head cool in a battle. Toothless did as told wrapping himself around the still paralyzed ( tho not enough to not move apparently) Hoothoot and squeezing. Paralysis is always a gamble, he remembered his teacher saying, there's always a chance it will kick in but you're pretty much rolling the dice every turn Still it had gone good so far. No physical attacks yet. Another Growl, they were starting to stack up, lowering Toothless attack bit by bit. "Keep using wrap bud" The Hoothoot gave yet another Growl attack ( maybe it didn't know any more ? Crap that made Marcus feel kinda bad about this) The wrap attack continued, doing as little damaged as it was doing it was still doing damage. And Toothless was still looking so proud of himself "Good job Toothless!" Marcus called out. He watched as the wrap attack continued to hurt the Hoothoot Still no paralysis tho, he thought wincing as the bird Pokemon finally went on the offensive and fired off a peck attack. Toothless cried out trying to dodge but unable to. "You okay bud?" he asked, Toothless let out w 'low!' nodding decidedly and getting back up. Marcus gave a sigh of relief. "Okay wrap again" Hoothoots managed to use another Peck account and Marcus winced. That was two. MIght be more than what Toothless could handle. The Hoothoot let out another Growl attack and Marcus breathed out as his pokemon's wrap attack continued. Aaaaand another Growl attack, he thought, okay that's...that's good. Eventually the wrap attack worked and the Hoothoot fainted. Marcus let out a breath and knelt next to Toothless letting him wiggle up back onto his arm. "Here you go bud" he said using a potion on the Pokemon smiling when it heals some of the hurts from the peck attacks. "I'm so proud of you Toothless" he said bringing up the snake Pokemon to eye level.

After the battle, Marcus walked back with the Pokemon to the Pokemon center. He wanted a quick shower both because walking around ( and sleeping in) the heat had made him sweat and because he wanted to wash the remnants of the nightmare off. He didn't bother returning his Pokemon letting them lounge in the room instead. Even- back in school he had never liked leaving his Pokemon inside their balls. The room didn't have anything they could really destroy and even if it did his party was well behaved. Stepping into the shower he closed his eyes and let the cold water finish waking him up. He focused on the cold on the way it shocked him into awareness on the way it hit his skin. It was grounding and did a good job of chasing the last of the nightmare away.
He had been prone to nightmares since he had had a bad encounter with a psychic pokemon in the academy. Usually they had been of his parents argueng, of his little sibling crying. When his father had had a heart attack Marcus had dreamt about him dying for months. Therapy had helped but it had always been something he had dealt with. But they had never been this frequent. With a sigh Marcus turned off the shower shaking his head both to rid himself of those thoughts and to shake off the excess water from his hair. Grabbing a towel he walked out and looked at himself in the mirror. Brown eyes looked tired but alert, his brown hair was as messy as it had always been. Still the shower had helped wake him up and after making a face at himself in the mirror Marcus gave up on the narcissus routine and went about getting dressed and attempting to brush his hair. Coming out of the bathroom he put his dirty clothes away and threw himself on the bed, earning a cry of surprise from his pokemon. Smiling he picked up Ziva holding her up over his head before placing her down on her belly. "Sorry about that kids" he said smiling as Ziva plopped with her head on his chest. Never one to be left out, Toothless slithered up onto his shoulder. Marcus felt warmth settled in his chest at that, at how much his pokemon trusted him, at how freakin cute they were. This was his team. "We did really good out there didnt we" he said petting Ziva on her snout earning a happy "dile!"

Marcus continued to relax with his pokemon, petting Ziva down the lenght of her snout. The little crocodile pokemon was loving the attention closing her eyes as he pet her and every now and then bumping her snout against his hand making Marcus laugh. She was adorable he decided, his starter. Well...his Jotho league starter. He spent the next few minutes like that only looking up when his phone rang. He sighed before looking at the phone number calling him only hesitating for a moment before answering. "Hey Katie-girl how are you" he said oofing when Ziva took the lack of attention personally and bumper her snout against his chin
The call with his cousin took the better of 20 minutes as Marcus caught her up on his latest captures and what he had been doing in Jotho so far. He kept his nightmares and anything relating to Ray to himself however. He loved his cousin, Katie was his favorite cousin. They had shared everything ever since they were kids. But Marcus wasnt stupid. He knew Katie was asking yes because she loved him but also to report to his dad. Marcus uncle Eliot was a top Ranger in Pewter. Anything Marcus had to say that he mentioned to Katie would be said to her dad and then would be used against him...not in a court of law but definetely to get him to go back to the Ranger program. Still the call did a good job of cheering up his spirits and by the time he hung up he was ready to go back out and train again. "Come on kids" he said calling out to his pokemon "lets go see what else we find out there:"

Walking around Marcus turned around at a call of "Hey Bennett!" whiping around to see a girl with purple hair and piercings Marcus thought a bit and recognized her from the battling ring a few days ago. "Hey! Carla right?" he said smiling at the girl "yeah right." she said "that was some battle" "yeah well i got good pokemon" he said scratching the back of his head "you seen any of the others around?" Carla shook her head "not since the battle ring no" she said "but I mean if you want a battle" Marcus stopped looking at his pokemon then back at Carla "I mean..sure"
Once they had cleared a bit of distance Carla sent out a ghastly Drat, he thought that takes out normal types...I really need Plato to level up. With a smile he let out ZIva the little totodile jumping in his arms with a grin. "hey Ziv" he said bonking his head against Zivas "How bout a battle?" Ziva jumped from his arms to face the ghastly and the battle began"
