Barrows was a made man. Mafia's a given; he worked as a clean-up manager with unnaturally useful minions. A better grade of mook.

Roan's assessment hardly surprised Nines; it was a conclusion he'd expected her to come to. Casting the point aside as a given, he shifted in his seat. His weight leaned left, propping onto the elbow rested on the armrest. Holding his hand up, he rested his chin on his palm.

Ever seen any documentaries on the old sacrificial altars in the Tenochtitlan temples? THe big stone slab they laid people out on? Imagine waking up from a drugged haze on one of those with a knife tearing to your gut held by some creeper with a hood, robes, and harem of freaky women dressed like some kind of old Sumerian bullshit brigade. Didn't pay much attention to the rock I was on, if I'm honest. Things got incredibly bloody, incredibly quickly when they found out that wrist manacles don't work on a guy willing to break his hands to get loose.

"Believe me, I'm more familiar with that concept than you know. The Aztec's didn't hold the monopoly on sacrifices after all."

Grimacing softly, her eyes unfocused as she remembered something she clearly didn't like form her past.
Shaking the memory off, she leant back and knitted her hands together in her lap.

"Heh, maybe you're a better vampire than I thought. Breaking your hands to get free is definitely undead thinking. Anything that can be healed later is a viable option in dire circumstances. Alright, this information gives me a few sneaking suspicions to go look into, though I'll admit right now, if it is to do with the group I'm guessing at, I STILL don't get why they chose you, but we'll see. Leave it with me, I'll let you know what I dig up."

Nines caught the moment of distraction. Recognizing it as the look of someone with personal experience, he filed the idea away for future use. Regardless, he had more prevalent topics to consider than which cult did her wrong.

Shifting back to a reclined position, he leaned back into the comfort of his chair, but kept his eyes focused on the matriarch.

Fair enough. If you dig up stuff I couldn't, power to you. My only real question is...why? And why on so many levels beyond just the background check, but we'll start there.
PostPosted: Fri Apr 13, 2012 12:42 pm

"What do you mean why? Surely it's in both of our best interests to figure out what bloodline you are? Then I can teach you stuff you're better suited to learning, and while you;re doing that, there's a good chance at pinning down either where the barking mad b***h who did you over is, or what happened to her so you get some closure.

Cos s**t, Nines, you got as many skeletons in your closet and demons in your head as I do, and that's saying something. Biggest difference, really, is that I've already confronted most of mine and have a stable relationship with em. You don't."

She quirked a brow in confusion when he asked her why, as if it was somehow inconceivable that she WOULDN'T do so, rather than have to justify why she WAS doing it.
Shaking her head, she paged Jan and requested vitae, then sat back once more.

Alright, fair enough. That's something I can honestly put myself to. Next question's a bit harder, though, and I hope you'll understand my need to ask.

Pausing to clear his throat, Nines then shifted forward. Both elbows nestled onto his knees, and his chin came to rest upon the net his fingers made as they interlocked.

Everything I've been told basically says the bnb locked in the armory is something ludicrously dangerous and powerful. That's why it's here, because here it can be kept out of just anybody's hands. You've also alluded to my many flaws, including borderline mental instability that isn't getting any better any time soon. So that being the case, what in God's name is the freakshow thinking? Why would you shove that thing off onto somebody without the most intense of scrutiny and background checks? It's like giving a five year old a loaded revolver!

"You're Kindred, and he's Syn."

She didn't lean forwards, but her expression did harden somewhat, then she sighed and rubbed her temples, thinking how best to put things.

"See, you have to think like Ice to even BEGIN to understand him, and even then you'll never be close to the mark, but we'll try.
Okra contains a ludicrously powerful Daemon, when you compare him to, say, a Spas-12. Because its a daemon weapon, it can injure on a long term basis supernatural creature. If you shoot me with a shotgun, I'll heal it almost instantly. Scratch me with Okra, I'll heal mortal slow. That makes it a very worthwhile weapon to have in the right hands - namely those of people on 'our' side of any given conflict.

However, as you perceive already, there COULD be a risk if the weapon is given to someone who would harm us as well as the enemy, or becomes mentally unstable with it.
There are several ways Syn combat this, the biggest of which was in sending you to me, however there's one very key thing you need to think about...

Ice is Syn, and Ice is Ice. He's older than even I know or care to think about, and essentially uncontested in his role. He's powerful in many ways, a master manipulator, and doesn't even have morals or ethics holding him back.
It would never occur to him to even BEGIN to conceive that anyone with Okra is either a danger to him, or more powerful than he is. It wont enter his brain for a second that such could be so and thus...

...if I fail, he can always ensure the blade is returned to sleep until a later time."

She sighed again, and gratefully turned aside as Jan entered with vitae, enough for both of them in tall glasses, one of which she took to sip at.

...At the expense of whoever is holding it. I see.

It was nothing he didn't already know, but hearing it from the horse's mouth made all the difference to Nines. With this verified, it all but cemented his opinions regarding the weapon. Without some incredibly good incentive...he had made up his mind.

And where do you stand in all this?
PostPosted: Fri Apr 13, 2012 1:06 pm

"In the middle of the armoury, letting five year olds touch revolvers, apparently."

She smiled wryly, and sought a smoke.

"Syn and I have a past, and to be frank, most of my attempts to get out of the circle have been petulant statements rather than genuine beliefs that they'll piss off.
Truthfully, the general gist of what they;re there to do I agree with. I just hate the guys doing it and their methods, but what do I know, I'm a kid compared to them, and not even HALF as batshit insane.
Eventually, I'll get myself into a position to lobby for freedom for myself and those I care about, should there be any, and in the mean time... I'm the idiot who picks the fights, mutters in the background, kicks arse on their behalf and generally plays the role of chief dogsbody, though my kill count is higher than an office clerks.

Some day's I'm angry, some days I'm tired, some days it's all a big joke, and some days it simply is what it is. It certainly beats a guaranteed spot in hell."

Exhaling a smoke ring, she speculated on the fact that she'd smoked a lot of cigarettes already tonight... then decided she was entitled to do so, and went back to enjoying the warm sensation in her chest.

And now the hardest question of them all.

Nines' gaze remained unflinching. Stone still, he continued to rest his chin on the backs of his hands as he hunched forward to stare at Roan.

Why do you do it?
PostPosted: Fri Apr 13, 2012 1:16 pm

"There aren't words to explain that."

She pinned her gaze on his as he leaned forwards, ensuring he couldn't escape what was...

...a very hypnotic pair of mismatched eyes. Twin, lazy pools of reassurance and calm, like a lakeside in early summer, with a gentle breeze on the skin. So peaceful, and drowzy, no one would ever want to get up, or move. It was such a warm, loving feeling.
A feeling that of course extended to the svelte woman coming closer to him, gently touching his arms, softly helping him relax back into the chair, snuggling his arms down by his body to make room for her to cuddle in closer....

...until placing her lips near his ear broke their gaze, and brought the reality of having her inside his personal space and pinning his arms crashing in fully.

"I can do the most inhuman of things, and one day, I will forget what it was like to even care. I will not understand what is wrong with things like what I have just done, until I am a raging animal waiting to be put down.
I remember being human, Nines, just like you. But for me, it's like a far away dream I have to cling to every night. I wanted children, once, and a life of my own, free, to do what I felt best.

My concept of best may have become warped somewhat over the last couple of centuries... but I'd rather do my best to help you, Corbin and Dagoth with my a** on the line with my superiors than to sit back and do nothing.
Hell is hardly an option, and this, at least, I chose."

She let him go abruptly, grabbed her glass and walked away from him to a window, sipping her drink with her back to him.

She was so many years his elder, so much more powerful both mentally, physically, and simply more potent of the blood that when their eyes locked, he was trapped within them. No about of wrestling would break the trance, if only because it was insidiously alluring. His body relaxed, and she laid him back. Words were whispered, which he understood, but as soon as the trance was broken his right hand darted immediately to his left-hand ribs. Even so, his arms were pinned; the grasping limb groped at only air so long as her grip remained, and even when he was released his left-hand ribs were all his grasp could find. Trying not to snap, despite the bulging vein on his neck, he paused and forced calm once again. It was a difficult prospect; she had just crossed a line, perhaps knowingly. Still, he let it go, forcing his hand back onto his lap and keeping his tongue between his teeth while there was still anger that may poison his words.

Please...kindly don't do that again.

The frustration never passed his lips, and his self control was sufficient that he managed to make the request come out as politely diplomatic, rather than insistent and angry.
PostPosted: Fri Apr 13, 2012 1:30 pm

"Then kindly don't ask me stupid questions that don't have logical answers, or words in the English language to describe them.

Try to think first, Nines, you'll find it a lot easier to avoid tense and awkward conversations with me if you do. And when I say that, I mean think about what you're asking me and how that looks to ME. You think well enough, but as a human. I'm not human. Some days, I'm also not even humane.
I try, but you have to start trying to think like a vampire as well.

I'm 568 years old. I've seen an awful lot of things, some of which have made me question whether humanity is even worth it. Just being near someone as naive and mortal as you yet are can be vexing and difficult. Especially when it's so very, very, very much easier to be a predator...."

She never turned around to look at him as she spoke, and had no idea if he;d understand what she was saying. She didn't even know if he'd understood the fullness of what she;d just done, or even learned a simple and critical lesson from it. She also knew that for right now, it didn't matter.

Stup....

Nines quickly bit his lip, stopping himself before he could speak in anger. Again, she was capable of being just old enough, injecting just that little enough bit of condescension that it infuriated him and drove him to respond heatedly. He thus had to force himself to calm once again, leaning forward once again to rest his head upon his hands.

Forcing an even, level mannerism, Nines tried to speak calmly and explain himself nonaggressively.

I'm asking because I've been trying to think about it all from your perspective, and I can't. I'm neither old enough, nor am I enough of a predator to shift perspective. Hell, I don't even know much about you, which certainly makes things difficult when I can't even find some point to relate to. I know it's probably the most frustrating thing you can have on your plate right now, but if I'm going to ever see things your way, I'm going to have to ask you questions about how you see things, or else I'm going to have to wait a few decades or more before we get anywhere.
PostPosted: Fri Apr 13, 2012 1:43 pm

"Not a problem, so long as you are accepting of the fact the answers, or actions, you get in response are of course going to be things you don't expect, and things that would indeed scare the pants off an average human being.

Seeing as you're still in said mindset....

I scare you, do I not? Not necessarily in a 'booga booga' kind of way, but nevertheless. And you're pitifully terrified of Ice. Don;t really blame you on the latter one, though I still say being really angry works even better."

Cracking the window open, she leant on the sill to watch the stars as she spoke, no over tones of anger or anything in her voice really, leaving her cold and dispassionate, though assumably for a reason considering what was being said was rather personal.

"There will also be things I cannot, or will not, answer."

Scare me? You terrify me, and not because of the stuff I know you could do. You terrify me because of what you're wanting me to do, and because of what you are.

He let his hands sink between his knees, but kept his weight rested upon his elbows, which remained upon his knees. A heavy sigh came.

I understand if you don't answer me on the personal things. I've hardly made myself a good person to confide in.
