@Lone, I personally have my spite against organized religion yes, I personally think that you should believe what ever, and that's what is right and true to you. I just like to see people being tolerant of other people's beliefs and although it is hypocritical I take an intolerant stand against intolerance. It's just the Propaganda of the Deed and the Idea that in order to stick up for what you believe you have to break the rules of what you believe. It's all fine and dandy though :333

Wow, so shiny, Lone. ='3

But yes. Things like religion and race shouldn't be scrapped or ignored because they cause conflict. They should be understood and acknowledged, so that people can moved on with their lives. D< It's when people DON'T understand or REFUSE to acknowledge things that animosity occurs.

Afterall, not everyone with racial bias is a white supremacist, and not all people who are part of a religion are members of the Westboro Baptist Church. 9w9

In terms of racism, Hector, only a small number of people actually indulge in overt racism. Most racism nowadays is institutional or structural, like the prevalence of poverty of blacks and Hispanics due to old and racist laws and coding. It's the stereotypes and associations that make us racist, not necessarily how we interact with people.

Think of this -- the least racist people in the world are kids. They notice that people look different, but that's as far as it goes. They look different, but that only means that they look different! Same as that the kid with red hair looks different from the kid with blonde hair. And then they move on. People are so preoccupied with race nowadays, always worrying about coming across as racist, that they can't see it objectively, like little kids.

It's not simple, but I don't like it when people brush off race as if by ignoring it, they're doing the right thing. That's a misunderstanding that came after after the civil rights movement. People believe that the most non-racist thing to do is to pretend that they're colorblind. But that's counterproductive.

...I'm so ready to be done with this class. =w=

Eh, everyone has there different ideas, I simply see race s a scientific change in a species nothing more nothing less, it's pointless to worry about race because we are all the same. I define racism as the hate or generality of a person based on skin color or culture. I understand that poverty is prevalent among minorities and that's a sad fact, I do not flip it around and say that Minorities live in poverty. I agree in understanding beliefs but the idea of having religion and race in the forefront of a society aggravates me. Keep it in the individual not the commutative of a society.

You should take a race class someday, Hector. I mean, you're not wrong, but the whole situation can't be simplified without proper thought and research.

Just so you know, the term 'race' was never used until Americans needed a way to justify their treatment of Africans. Race itself has no scientific or cultural basing. (With the exception of African-American culture, but that developed AFTER race was introduced as a concept.) ETHNICITY is one thing, race is just an idea based on superficial aspects.

It's complicated. Having grown up in America, my judgment of it isn't the best, but after moving to a highly xenophobic country, my perspective has widened slightly~

What's really interesting is comparing racism between the US and Japan. 9w9 Like during WWII. Dear lord it was fun discussing it.

I actually wanted to write that in my post, but then I went "Nah, that's Loli's department, not mine~

I say Race because most people use Ethnicity to describe any culture or area like Texan, while I place American under different Ethnicities. I mean yes, there is a scientific basis, skin color and physical features were adaptations to specific areas. Dark skin was the first skin color due to lifes originating in the deserts of Africa, dark skin protecting against the sun much better than lighter.

Lighter skin simply came along near the end due to the immigration towards more snowy places, lighter skin didn't need as much melanin because of the absence of a lot of sun light, and was better suited for the cold environments.

Peoples skin color is simply just genetic coding, not like there is something really different about them, its the traits passed down from parent to offspring, means nothing in the grand scheme of things, they're still Homo Sapiens Sapiens

@Loli: Being a Japanese American myself, I think it needs to be said that while WWII has placed scars on Japanese Americans, it is also a subject of pride for some. I won't go into the details because that's something different from what's being discussed at the moment, and lengthy in nature. In any case though, if you wish to do some digging, look up the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, which was comprised of Japanese American volunteers.

Something noteworthy about their history, is when President Truman told them upon their arrival back in America in 1946: "You fought not only the enemy, but you fought prejudice–and you have won."

That's actually when hot spring are the best, when thre's snow outside. Just like it's common practice to go play in the snow for like 10seconds after coming out of a sauna. It's the same effect of when it's really hot outside andyou jump in a pool for 10 seconds to cool yourself down.

@ Lone -- Hahah, Lone, we make a good team. =w= I was also going to mention religion in my first post, too, but I decided you would be able to put it better than me.

Also, I love that photo. It describes it perfectly. x3

My dad wants to go to the monkey hot springs. He says that if he ever comes to visit, just himself, he wants me to take him there.

@ Hector -- (Texan is an ethnicity? xD)

Yes, that's true, that's the science of skin color. But that doesn't say anything about race. What makes a white person white? Light skin, probably of European descent. But what about the Spanish? They're from Europe, and share very similar skin colors. But they're more likely to be thought of as Hispanic. And Hispanic people ARE technically Caucasian, like white people. And blacks are usually thought to be African-Americans. But there are a lot of "black" people in South and Central America. Upon seeing me, you would know I'm white.

"Race" is a way of categorizing people based on their outward appearance. Yes, there is science behind differences in skin color. But it's not enough to support the claim that there's a scientific difference between RACES. Especially since there's a lot of overlap. White people can have darker skin and black people can have lighter skin.

There's something to be said about understanding the different between nationality, ethnicity, and race.

Race isn't just skin color. When the concept of race was first established, scientists said that people of different races were different species. They measured skull sizes and compared faces to those of apes. They didn't look at DNA or genetic coding or traits passed down from the parents. They looked at the surface, and used that to separate humans into different groups, and then ranked them. It's the stereotypes and traits associated with each group that persist as racism today.

It's all about association. They've developed a number of tests that are designed to tap into your subconscious prejudices. Because very few Americans are actually aware of their racism. It's something ingrained in our society.

@ Joker -- Yeah, I know that. (There's a very large Japanese-American population in my area~ >w>) But most of my Japanese-Japanese friends and classmates had no idea anything like that happened (since I don't think they spend a good deal of time on American history in Japan), and they were really startled.

It brought one of my friends to tears. Not that they had been imprisoned, but that second and third generation Japanese-Americans would be unable to speak Japanese. xD "They lost their culture so quickly!" It was a bizarre time in that class. >w>

@ Serend -- That makes sense. 9w9

There's cultural stuff in there. 'Abunee' (slang for abunai, dangerous) can just mean risky, or something equally not-serious? xD It's hard to explain!

ALSO, LET ME SAY. I kept my mouth shut when Shinju got one vote and I sat all alone in the River corner, but this! Why would two people pick Yuuto? D= I DON'T UNDERSTAND.
