Adriene's daily schedule since the Oak had exploded mostly consisted of a lot of sleeping, anxiously checking her phone for her mother's newest "Are you okay?" text, and praying that Amity wouldn't bring up the bank account. Today, however, she was feeling a little better about being faced with her own death, so she decided to take a walk outside. Mostly, she was just hoping that she would run into one of her friends, to distract her for a while, so he was overjoyed when she saw Asha, Elvira, and Amanda gathering at the fountain. She crossed the courtyard to them and placed herself on the lip of the fountain, opposite the others.

"Ooh, wow! She marveled at the letters, "You really DO have a fan club! I bet Elvira sent at least half of those, though."

Brother! Cool. Amanda hadn't known Asha had a brother. They'd always sort of assumed Asha was an only child from how self-centered she acted. The concept that Asha not only had a brother, but that the brother was here, was rather mind-blowing. Of course, Amanda kept a straight face.

"Hello, Adriene!" Amanda chirped as the girl approached. Amanda hadn't seen much of Adriene lately. Well, Amanda hadn't seen much of anyone. She'd been skipping a lot of classes as of late, stayed in Tomas a lot. The drowsiness hadn't made sense until about now.

For now Amanda was entirely focused on staying active so they could stay awake. Walking to the gate to meet this aforementioned brother of Asha's? Sure. Why not. Plus if Amanda was further from Tomas they had a head start on Bambi when the girl realized they were gone. "Wow, you're going through your brother's fanmail? How nice of you! Sure, let's go meet him."

Finley knew he should be getting out more. Way more. He was running out of the tired excuses of 'but it's like twice as much effort to go anywhere!' and 'well, I'm actually legitimately dying right now' that he told himself constantly. He knew the truth. He was just too damn tired all the time. It was too much effort existing without having something of his own. That before was the ocean, and keeping up the facade of innocence while helping Skye. He didn't have those now. He was just there.

It was probably just good timing that he felt just enough motivation to leave the dorms today. As he hobbled into the courtyard he noticed the group gathered around the fountain. Well, he guessed they were a reason to stick around. Friends. Especially for Elvira- who he knew would be absolutely devastated and probably blame themself if Fin died before them -and Kitty- who he liked and wanted to get to know so much more. Good thing I'm such a ******** furry.

Upon approaching, he caught the mention of a brother and going to see him. Maybe that could be fun. "I'll come along," he said, as a way of greeting.

Asha quirked an eyebrow, but was ultimately unsurprised. There really was nothing better to do around this place.

She stood (careful to make sure that her hair didn't fall into the water behind her) and gathered her letters in her arms. She quickly nodded to Finley and Adriene, inclining her head in the direction of the Justus gate to let them know where they were headed.

"Let us. Go then." Asha said.

Kitty purrnestly greeted Finley and Adriene, quickly recapping what they'd talked about before (furgetting, again, that not everyone could understand her.) She butted her head against Finley's foot gently before prancing backward and flashing them a warm look. She was really happy to see them outside. Caide had always been Kitty's favfurrite after Asha, and she hoped that he might be able to distract Finley from the sadness that had loomed over them lately.

Waiting for them at the gate was a tall, cold-looking elf. He wore an impatient expression almost identical to Asha's, staring off rather intensely (or at least he seemed to be, but maybe it was just his face) into the distance, evidently kept waiting after all.

Elvira nodded at Asha's explanations. It was interesting to hear her talk about herself; well, less in the 'I'm so great' sense and more in the 'I'm an actual person' sense. Asha was...reserved, oddly, for somebody who loved to show off. That was the vague sense that they were beginning to pick up, anyways.

They perked up a little at Asha's questions. They could talk about their own family for days; Elvira was family oriented. The only reason they hadn't was for the sake of secrecy, but since their-and-Fin's entire plot with Skye had already been revealed, there was no use in hiding such details. "Well, my family--"

Elvira paused at Amanda's sudden appearance, squinting at the other's appearance. They hadn't seen Amanda much, and when they had, a fretting tall Tomas had been accompanying her. Amanda was half-dwarf...was it really alright for her to just be just going everywhere willynilly? Elvira stayed silent as the others arrived, giving Adrienne and Fin a nod of greeting when they both arrived. Both of them also seemed relatively fine; well, except for Fin, who couldn't really be considered 'fine' after what had happened to them.

"What a surprise, the whole goddamn gang sans Gwen is here." They commented dryly as the group began walking, pushing themselves off the fountain and wiping their forehead with a forearm. "On the day I smell like s**t, great."

Elvira squinted at the sight of the elf standing near the gate. Were guests not allowed onto school grounds? They didn't know that. "Guessin' that's Caide?"

What a vast, vast city the humans had.

Caide had wandered through Justus, catching quite a few glances as he'd gone. The locals didn't seem unused to strange appearances, instead interested by them. He hadn't been surprised - although he'd informed his parents (and Amaris) quite vocally that if he went out of the forest as he was he'd attract attention, his protests were in vain. Well, for a lack of it, really. Caide had wanted to blend in, at least as well as he could with his extraordinarily long hair and uncomfortably tall height. The traditional and lavish elven clothes were anything but comforting in a sea of people wearing jeans and hoodies and T-shirts. It had turned into a trip he had been hoping for to a slightly dreaded arrival.

So he stood stiffly just beyond the gate, fidgeting and trying to avoid looking (and failing) at the two men he assumed were guarding it. He note by their features that they were human. They seemed so small. Caide was intrigued, comparing the images of people he'd known all of his life to them and noticing minute differences. Humans certainly had blunter features and less delicate hands from what he could tell. The eyes of the blond one were startling too. He'd never been able to observe someone with blue eyes so closely in person before.

His attention quickly snapped away from them when he saw a familiar figure appear in his peripheral vision. He heard Asha's flat call of
[Caide, come here.] and entered the sphere of influence that had kept him out.

He felt his previous apprehension shrug itself off in moments. His long strides had him standing before Asha and what he could only hope were her friends. Four? Impressive. He stared at each of them, taking in their appearances. Two elves, a human, and... he paused on Amanda. She seemed very human-like, but something kept him from that assumption. Was she some type of mix of races?

Caide turned his attention to Asha and smiled fondly. She held herself a bit differently than he remembered, although he felt a strange sense of nostalgia when her frown spread indignantly at his smile.

"These are. My friends," Asha said, gesturing to each of them. Caide puzzled at her halting manner of speech. Hadn't she been speaking for months now? "Elvira. Amanda. Adriene. Finley. Speak human. For them."

"My my my my my, someone has been quite busy!" he crooned, speaking fluently with the slight overtures of a Canadian accent. "Is that any way to greet your favorite sibling? As the first to visit you, I would think I'm deserving of that title about now. As well, you've started to wear your hair like mine! I'm very flattered.

                                "So, you're her friends?"
he asked, gesturing to the small group. "It is a pleasure to meet you. I am her brother, Caide. I've heard news of something dramatic happening in this present month. How are the lot of you faring, and has my sister treated you well?"

Damn. Caide was kind of hot. Amanda wished they could grow their hair that long. The scar made him look quite mysterious as well. Such a kind soul, Amanda couldn't imagine how such a pretty person could be Asha's bro--

Caide spoke. Suddenly Amanda understood. It's like a more fluent, male version of Asha. Heck, Asha's hair was almost as long as Caide's. Amanda wondered in the back of her mind if Caide's scar was real or if it was just makeup that Caide had put on to appear more mysterious and attractive. Still, Amanda didn't see the point of making enemies she didn't need to, so she shrugged and offered Caide the usual smile.

"I'm Amanda!" they chirped. "I'm dying very slowly and probably painfully. Is that scar real?"

xxGwen should have known better to investigate.

But she could sense an incoming ego the size of a ******** redwood tree, and she just had to see who was around that could possibly rival Asha's sense of self-importance. Gwen checked outside, saw her friends, and simply followed. Her hearing picked up the start of a conversation, including the bit that this was Caide, and he was Asha's brother of all things.

An elf with a head the size of Jupiter was related to Asha. Gwen should've guessed.

The girl arrived at the group directly behind Elvira shortly after Caide made his introduction. She said nothing for a good amount of time, eyes flicking back and forth between Asha and Caide. Specifically, the distinct copycatting of style. Finally, Gwen spoke up.

"What a ******** nightmare. There's two of you."

Caide chuckled at Amanda's straightforward manner, although it became grim and concerned as he realized what she was saying. "You're dying? You look well, maybe a bit tired. Is this from the 'dark air' I hear has spread?"

He touched his scar. As he closed his eye it was possible to see that his eyelids were mostly undamaged save for the faintest tracings of a line. He'd moved away in the right fraction of an instant. "Yes, it's real."

When he opened it again he was surprised to see another teenager join the gathering.

"Goodness, I don't know what I did to deserve that reaction," Caide tittered. "My reputation proceeds me...?"

As Caide approached, Elvira's eyebrows shot up. "Pretty boy, I see." They commented lowly to Asha, taking in his appearance with a low whistle. Elvira's eyes stuck on his hair, admiring the texture and the silkiness. It was so shiny. Soooo shiny.

Elvira paused, a little amused at Gwen's brusqueness. How did people like this girl? She was rude as ********. Then again Elvira was rude as ********, so there was that. They waited until Caide had finished answering them before giving a little wave. "Yo older brother. Is your entirely family consistent of ******** trees or is that just a white elf thing? What are you even visiting for? Here to snatch Asha away so she can go marry some other fancy as ******** elf and make a successor to the family or some bullshit?"

Finley flashed a smile at Kitty as she came towards him. Maybe she was talking to him and Adrienne but he couldn't understand. Oh well, she was still cute. In a cat way right now. Why does that word mean two things? Cat Kitty is cute but person Kitty is cute. There's gotta be a way to put that without it being weird.

Caide showed up and Fin's first thought was There's gotta be a family secret about how to keep your hair good even though it's trailing around on the ground. He was amused by how suspicious Elvira was of Caide's intentions, particularly regarding if he was here to marry her off to someone else. This was DEFINITELY a good day to get out of the dorms.

He took a back seat to introductions for now. He actually wanted to hear Caide's answer to Elvira. And then Elvira's reaction to that answer. He sort of wondered if Elvira even realised that they were sounding a little desperate.

Caide turned, attention caught by the verdantly colored elf's wave. He was a little overwhelmed by the onslaught of questions. After raising his hands in a submissive gesture and giving an light, good-natured laugh, he paused to consider what they had asked.

"I have not gotten out much, so to say by convention," he admitted. "So I wouldn't be chief authority on white elves. I can however say with confidence that the major population of our village is light skinned, and indeed, we have a predistposition toward being tall, our family being notable especially.

"I came here for a multitiude of reasons, but I entreat you to let me ease your heart on the matter of my sister,"
Caide continued airily. "Our parents bid me that I should watch over her, what with her failure to return at Equinox, and notify them as soon as possible if anything troublesome were to occur."

His tone became contemplative. "This sort of circumstance could qualify. They would send for her, if they knew of the poison you inhaled-"

"They. Will not," Asha interrupted. "Do not tell them. The CEE are. Too self important. To die. The situation will fix. Itself."

Her indignation was still a bit of a surprise for Caide. He'd half-expected her to be eager to return home, complaining of humans and the language that she obviously was still figuring her way around. It was possible that having a friend from home helped. Her vehemency to leave was understandable, then, in his eyes, but it intrigued him as it always had.

"Calm yourself, sister of mine," Caide responded, not at all bothered, "and remember who you're speaking to. If I know mother, I know that she would worry herself tediously with that knowledge. Besides, I hope it takes care of itself as well - your leave is also mine. Human society provokes my curiosity, and since I will be an adivsor someday, I'd do well to stay, and know more about them."

He smiled, but remembering Amaris's strict instructions regarding the shapeshifter and Noli's blunt, but well-meaning advisements, it caved. Caide ran his hand through his hair in a gesture conveying an emotion Asha couldn't place until he spoke. "Unfortunate as it is, I can't bring only good tidings. Goldenrod can't stay with you any longer.

                                "Before you protest,"
he said quickly, "think more of Goldenrod than yourself, and take into account that Noli herself gave me the advice to follow through with the command."

Caide paused, unsure if he could explain himself in front of the group. He looked at Asha, who'd turned stiff, fists made tightly of her hands.

Asha's ears hovered low at the sides of her head, almost comical in their large size, but she didn't feel anywhere close to laughing. "Why?" she demanded, taking a step forward. "Kitty is- stays- decides to-"

She spluttered for a moment, tension barring her from responding coherently. Her trepidation had been rising since the moment he'd opened his mouth and it clung to her tightly now.

[What in First's name bestowed upon you any sort of influence that you might use to make her go? You have no place-]

"So they do know her true name?"

                                [Y-... That is irrelevant-]

                                "And her nature?"

                                [Stop interrupting-]

"Don't be a hypocrite," Caide snapped, finally, "and allow me to explain myself! At least I deign to be cou- Staying in her present abode doesn't suit her. Asha, before you left you spoke of independence, but you lean so heavily on her even now! The mere thought of her departure sets you alight."

He leveled his tone, remembering that he was also speaking in front of others. "Listen to me. If this dark air is slowly seeping magic, as I have heard it told, none could know what it means for your friend. She might very well be confined to the form of a domesticated animal until her death. Are you selfish enough to ask that of her?"

Asha's fingertips bit into her palms. How dare he?

Kitty sat through the exchange. It was uncomfurrtable, she discovfurred, being talked about as if you purren't five feet away. Common as arguments between Asha and Caide were, and though she had listened to many, none had evfurr involved her like this.

She remembered where she stood, of course, and pawed the grass by Finley's foot quietly. They both had reason to want her in either place. Did she have to go with one or the othfurr? Her size had changed considerably - the fur on her back had risen with each passing tick of the clawk. Kitty padded forward and pressed against Asha, but didn't stay. She continued, and took her place beside Caide.

Asha was shellshocked. Kitty had chosen to go with Caide over her? Her amazement was immediately replaced by a cold, snippy tone.
[Does Caide have catnip in his pocket, or are you mad?]

Kitty stared at Asha for a long minute. No, she clawmly told her. Asha was very, very wrong! Caide was too, if he thought that she was going to disappur like that. There was no reason to lose their tempfurs, or get a cattitude.

You're kitten me, she told them, if you think there's a good clawption there. No amount of purrsuasion would make her go home, beclaws she was really not feline that, but Caide did have a point, just like claws did. She displayed hers for emphasis.

Not that they were stupid for not thinking of the pawsibility - but they totally furr - she could stay in Justus with Caide. Purroblem solved, yes? Yes? Yesses all clawround?

Caide shifted in discomfort. It wasn't what Amaris had asked for, but...

Asha gradually loosened. She looked at Caide, whose gaze had gone unfocused.

"... That is a suitable solution," he finally agreed, and Asha subtly breathed again. "It would be useful to have someone to show me around the town. Kitty will stay with me in Justus."

[Fine,] Asha spat. [As always, your visits continue to be nothing but pleasant. Please, allow me to laud your virtues - nothing becomes your arrival to a place as the leaving of it.]

She looked down at Kitty, still sitting by Caide. Briefly she considered bending down to hug her goodbye, but she was still sore from Caide's harsh words. "I will. See you soon?"

Kitty bobbed her little cat head. It felt abrupt, and it was, but some things had to be. She felt a brief pang as she looked at all of her excellent furriends. It would feel strange being away from them. They should visit, or she'd clawm find them! A quick lift and stilted wave of her paw was her way to express what she could to Finley and Amanda.

"I've overstayed my welcome," Caide said, somewhere between amused and distant. "What a shame. Goodbye, then."

Caide turned and went unceremoniously, Kitty trotting at his heels. Asha watched them leave, suddenly overwhelmed by the urge to lie in bed for at least eight hours. The air was kicking in, she told herself.

"There are. Five of us," she said, an afterthought left over from Gwen's statement. "Also. I did not. Mean for you to. Observe that."

She pressed her fingers to the bridge of her nose and muttered a farewell before departing to the Ekaterina dorms. A ******** nightmare, indeed.

xxGwen didn't completely understand what the ******** just happened, but apparently the hot elf that did Asha better than Asha did Asha was taking Kitty into the town. Probably better than taking her away considering if they got a goddamn antidote, anyway.

"Well," she said shortly, "that was a thing."

                              Gwen turned around and left.

Amanda had no idea what the hell happened beyond Kitty going with Caide, and she was too tired to really care all that much at the moment. Amanda decided it was best to leave quietly, so they turned around and started (very slowly) back to the Tomas dorms.

The lack of mentioning of a fiance had Elvira exhaling an unintentional sigh of relief through their nose. They nodded at Caide's comments, opening their mouth to interrogate him further before his spat with Asha started up.

Elvira paused, a little surprised, flicking their eyes back in forth between the siblings before taking a measured step back next to Finley and Adrienne's side. They thought momentarily of interfering but thought better of it, knowing that familial spats were best kept in between family.

They stayed silent until it was over, lifted a hand awkwardly up and opened their mouth to offer comforting words that they couldn't come up with at the sight of Asha's bitter expression, and then let the same hand fall down when the girl stalked off. Then Gwen was gone and Amanda had disappeared and Elvira cursed themselves for being absolutely useless.

They looked at Finley. "I'll," They paused. "Walk you back. And not because I think you're inept or whatever," They said, adding in the last part hastily. "But because I need somebody to walk with."
