Malik leaned back lightly, assessing what he should, and should not, divluge. But she was a clever girl, wasn't she.

"You're father has been having dealing with the Llothian empire. dealings that can put Vesendar in a state of constant alert for raids and bloodshed. So yes, I arranged for his accident, for that reason. hoping to sever this connection. but my findings lead me to believe that your father isn't the only one dealing with the llothians."

Leaning forward.

"And then, considering the condition you arrived in, I was wondering if you saw something, or someone, you weren't supposed to. it's no secret you and my son are close. nor is it a secret that I keep a close eye on vesendar."

Settling back.

"You and my son's...relationship, however was not a reason for my actions. So don't think it was. But I do need you to think hard, try and think of anything or anyone that seemed out of place, something that might have prompted that attack to silence you."

Llothian? Malik must be mistaken. "My parents wouldn't have anything to do with that lifestyle. My mother likes it when my father fights back and my father refuses to let any females think they're better than him. It seems like a constant power struggle, but they really are united in their front." Quieting for a moment, she thought back to what had been said just before that attack had taken place. "I'm not sure... Nothing is sticking out to me right now so if I did see something, it wasn't out of the ordinary for me." Studying Malik closely, her lips pulled into a frown. "Relationship? I'm not dating your son. He can have almost any woman he wants anyway."

Or he thought so until his father decided to correct on the issue. Great, not he had to deal with that little factoid. Why could none of this be easy? He was almost at a point of wanting to go pout in front of his mommy because she would then comfort him and tell him that it was all going to be okay. The headache was just getting worse too what with more complicated personal things coming up. Which made earlier all the more confusing for him. Argh, women. "She hasn't seen anything, can we leave her alone now?"
PostPosted: Sun Mar 01, 2009 4:04 pm

Malik allowed himself a small smile.

"Ah youth. you really think that a lifestyle would be enough to deter someone from large amounts of quickly made steel or influence? I can deliver to you the papers, the imagery, the souls if need be, of those that can confirm it."

before leaning forward.

"That maybe, Kaelin. but to most people, you and my son are dating. it's a misconception perhaps, but one that may prompt things. and while you may be right, my son isn't going after other women, now is he."

yes, lets just prod that a little. hell with PR there.

"your father may have been working for someone else though. someone higher in the political food chain. has anyone important been around? someone of an official capacity?"

"It's a well-known fact that dealing with Llothians is foolish. Their word means nothing and they'd just as soon as slit your throat as pay you what they rightfully owe. A dead man collects no debts, after all. My father would be foolish to deal with them. He can be cruel, certainly egotistical, but he's not stupid." Malik seemed to be convinced though so she thought back once again. "He has influential people in his circle just like anybody. Those in higher places can always assist him in finding resources, steel, or even favors and such. But, if he is meeting with someone like that, he rarely brings him to the house or only does so when I'm not around. And since he doesn't know when I'm not around, I'd have to say his meetings aren't taking place at the house."

That poke was more of a jab and she swallowed. "No, he's not. Which I don't fully understand either. Perhaps you should ask him. I seem to frustrate him when I ask questions."

If he hadn't have told her that he would stay, he would have left already just from being baseline irritated with his father on a level. Now they were both dredging up things that should be left well enough alone. He wasn't too tolerable of poking right now. "I keep the trash away from her." Which was his job as the best guy friend. To keep the trash away from her.

Malik glanced at his son...oh yes, he could feel the irritation coming off him like a furnace.

"Lets just lay all the cards out on the table. Your mother and I have talked before. she gave me the impression first that she never touched you in a violent manner, and that she was more the happy to let you go to Andal primarily because she was hoping that you and my son would get together. Now i find word that your mother is just as violent as your father."

sitting back.

"Domestic violence of the kind that you are going through is not something I tend to tolerate. despite what you think, it's the common indoctrination of Llothian ideaology. you are beaten into submission, broken until the will to resist and fight is gone. I've been through it myself. So I know it rather intimately. Let me guess, they beat you, and you wonder what you did wrong. or hurry to correct things. you make excuses why they do it, how they must be doing it because they love you. They don't."

folding his hands on his lap.

"you are nothing more to them then a servant girl. one that they don't have to pay for, that has no one to intervene against them until recently. Just as I was nothing more then that to my father."

"My son's feelings for you are plain to everyone else around you. and I see the same thing in your eyes, here and now, when you look at him. Those feelings, and the connections that brings may very well have brought down this wrath on you, out of fear. fear that if things bloomed, there'd be less ways to hide things from me, or my son, whom would naturally want to see more of you."

Watching her carefully.

"I have no intention of letting you go back to your parents, back to being beaten and bones broken for no other reason then they feel the need to do so. I can find you a home that will treat you the way a daughter should be treated, or if you wish you can continue to stay here or even the Inthara's I'm sure would take you in."

That was new...and unknown before. Malik had been treated the same way she was? But he loved his son... He must understand what love was then. She was still trying, still working to piece it all together in her mind but it was being elusive. "Malikhai says the same things. How do I know what you're saying is true? Why don't you treat Malikhai the same way they treat me? Why am I different?" Dismay slid over her face and she met Malikhai's gaze then felt her own skitter away as if she was embarrassed. "They tried to kill me. I've been around Malikhai for a long time now. Why not do it before?"

His mother was right...when his father meddled, he dug his heels in keep and didn't budge until he meddled as much as possible. For better or for worse on the matter. He watched her for a few moments as she moved her eyes to him and then let his own move away just as hers did, crossing his arms lightly. That wasn't the important subject right now...maybe his father could explain what he couldn't.
PostPosted: Sun Mar 01, 2009 5:51 pm

Malik watched her.

"Because I have been there. and I have suffered for my father's abuse of others as well. I know what it's like to have your hand broken because you pointed at the wrong person or thing. or a shoulder dislocated. Or having your jaw broken for speaking out of turn."

leaning forward.

"Becuase no one deserves that treatment. and treating someone like that starts a cycle. long enough, and the one you hurt loses the ability yo understand it's not only wrong to have done to them, but wrong to do to others. then they do it to their children and others, and it continues until someone steps in, usually violently. And I have paid the price for it."

A shrug.

"Piper helped break those chains. And I don't want to see my children look at me with fear. they shouldn't be afraid of me. They should respect me, they should love me, never fear me. and there are many more ways to earn that without resorting to beating them to teh point of breaking bone or severe injury."

drumming his fingers lightly ont eh arm of the chair.

"That, I can't answer. maybe they felt you two were getting to close. maybe you did see something, or know something, and you can't remember, either from a beating or the like. I can't really answer that question, as I don't have the information to do so."

"Is punishment not within a parent's right to deliver? You and Lady D'vinn scold and devise ways to keep your sons from causing harm. Why are my parent's methods any different? Yes, they cause me more pain and often seem to be much harsher than needed. But I cringe at the thought of being knocked about with a spoon and your son seems to be perfectly fine with such things." Spoons hurt more because it took longer to inflict the same sort of damage. They were a perfect weapon to use; the punished suffered longer and each blow was felt on top of the sting of the previous until all was on fire and beating with a pain that belied that of a fist.

Malik spoke of love the same way that the others had but she had nothing to compare it to. Nothing to help her understand except the beatings. And all were still telling her she was wrong. "What is love?"
PostPosted: Sun Mar 01, 2009 6:04 pm

This is where banging of his head against the wall feeling usually came in. She could rationalize it in a way that sounded perfectly fine to her and ignore everything else that was said. And usually this was the point where he ran out of things to say...good thing he wasn't doing the talking this time.

"Because you're thinking of being beaten with a spoon until it breaks flesh and bone. when he talks about being beaten with a spoon, he's talking one smack on the hand, and that's it. and punishment is a parent's right. but even they have limitations. to beat a person to the point of unconciousness or breaking bone becuase of a misplace item or the like is beyond punishment. that's abuse."

Malik leaned back a bit.

"Love...it's a feeling that is almost impossible to define. you feel...content, safe, warm inside when your with someone you love. you want to be with them, around them. protect them and keep them happy, safe, and warm with you. being apart from them makes you worry for them, and long for them to be at your side."
PostPosted: Sun Mar 01, 2009 7:29 pm

A single smack on the hand...vastly different from all that she'd ever experienced. "Can that really stop a child from doing something again?" It seemed too simple, too light, too lacking in pain to make any sort of lesson stick. Abuse...she felt the new word out in her mind, terming it what it was. Abuse was being beaten until you couldn't move, beaten until the blood ran thick and warm down your sides and pooled around you. Abuse was why Malikhai had always been so annoyed with her. It slowly started making sense.

There was only one person who matched all of those things. She glanced over at him slowly and tilted her head then began to wonder. If what Malik was saying was true...could she love Malikhai? "All love?"

And that's what he'd said before and she had disregarded it. He had even mention the fact that spoon slapping came with a usual kiss or hair ruffle afterwards. Heck, Zahara had hit him plenty of time with a spoon as well. Maybe she would believe his father more because he wasn't him. The interesting part was Malik speaking on the definition of love. His father was a very apperance careful person, but when he talked like that...he could almost see his father getting the mental image of Piper in his head. It also did good to show that it was truth and not just some definition.
