Well...that was a question now wasn't it? "You don't have to watch anything happen. If they want to tear each other apart then that's their business and their troubles. You shouldn't have to deal with it. Besides, there are plenty of people to step in on such things...if that's what you really wanted."
"I promise that if I was keeping something like that from you and if something went bad then yes I would tell you. But that's all hypthetical and you're worrying for no reason. Come on now, you should be happy. You don't have to fend off Inthara boys and the like."

A chuckle lightly at that, putting arm aroudn his wife's waist.
"As if either of those boys could really have do anything. my concern now is towards our own son. Half andalian is apparently able to be effected by yoru hot and giggly thing...which makes me wonder if the Inthara girls will get hot and giggly as well."

"I'm their child. You wouldn't stand by and watch your father beat on your mother." She knew his argument for that one, too. His father wouldn't beat his mother and if he was beating his mother and him as well, he would have killed him a long time ago. She'd heard it before...but it was different when you were actually in the situation. "I don't want their deaths on my conscience. They gave me life...I feel like I owe them."

Fitting to his side, she gave a smile as she leaned her head against his shoulder. Yes, nothing to worry about...nature would solve the problem and she wouldn't have to worry or upset anyone else with could be turing into never going to be. Piper chuckled. "You think Khai or Dhairiss would go after Faate and Lyssie? Perhaps, if those girls do get hit with it...though I shudder to think of them getting flushed and giggly paired with that instinct thing Zahara does from time to time." An amused smile to that one, "I guess you'll just have to continue to keep an eye on your boys then. Can't have any awkward moments of that sort, I would say."
And now came the argument. "Kaelin look, I know you feel differently but the truth is...just because two people decide to get together and bring you into the world doesn't mean you owe them. If they wanted to, they could have thrown you out into the street the day you were born. Just by being born into the world is no justification for owing anyone. You owe them when they raise you, when they take care of you and don't hurt you. When they respect you to you respect them because you earn it from each other. When they're willing to let you find your own way but are ready and waiting in the wings to help you if you need or if you fall and feel you have nothing else left."
Quieting a moment. "Frankly...that doesn't at all sound like your parents. They hurt you, they treat you less than a slave, they make you afraid to be around them. They don't care that art makes you so happy your soul practically sings, and they don't look at you with awe when you get that smile on your face like you've just discovered the greatest treasure in the world."
Shaking his head lightly. "No, I wouldn't stand by and watch my father beat on my mother...but not because I owe her anything just from being born. I wouldn't let him beat her, because I love them both and I could not stand by and watch them destroy something they've shared for years because something happened and my father lost it. My father would expect me to protect my mother from him. Not out of obligation, but out of love."

"True. nor would I care to see Dhairiss, flighty as he already is, even more so between both those girls. Sevilin would have a field day with him. speaking of that boy. where would he find the tools to break into the vaults?"
glancing at her.
"You haven't been sneaking visits with our youngest to or from that aurahkah woman, have you?"

Well...what was she supposed to say to that? Honestly, there was no meaningful response to give. "They could have thrown me out and abandoned me, but they didn't. They didn't want me in the beginning but they still took care of me. Maybe out of obligation, but perhaps that's a form of love, too. It might not be as wonderful as the kind of love that you've had all your life, Malikhai, but not everyone has what you do.
"It makes them angry that I went to Andal and discovered something that I truly enjoy because it takes me away from the things that are really important to them. They wanted me to do well in school and learn responsibility at home. I know it's hard for you to understand. But you have to understand what you're telling me, too. You want me to believe that my parents do not have a single spec of love for me. But what does that leave me with, Malikhai? Am I really supposed to accept that I wasn't worth loving?"

"Dhairiss would hide under your chair in your study while you were still sitting in it if that was the case." Laughing lightly at the mental image of that in her head, followed by a blink and a look up at Malik. "The vaults? I can't even break into the vaults...you keep them locked up like a dragon's hoard. And no I haven't. What makes you think he's getting into there...let alone how..."
Someone tell him again when the part came where he would stop trying to explain things to her and save them all some breath and grief on the matter. It didn't help that she had to use the same thing everyone else used to use against him in school, 'not everyone has what you do' which usually equated to 'you're special in the bad way so let's take advantage of you to try and get in on it too'. It was like she wasn't even listening to him...this whole matter wasn't about her parents, it was about her. Well...there was that feeling of disappointment again.
"I never said you weren't worth loving. There are people who love you. Just some people don't deserve to love you, or won't and that you don't need to cling to them trying to earn it, thinking that one day they'll give you what you want. Love should never have to be earned, it's a gift." And that was his own reasoning to keeping as her best friend and not pushing her for more. Rejection of course stung, but he didn't want her to love him just because he slaved for all the wrong reasons to get it.

"He confessed. I've had a few listening runes sticthed into his bedding. apparently he got something out of the vaults he gave to Kelligrin. probably a weapon of some sort. so we need to find out how he's getting in there so we can stop it. I don't want him grabbing something that's going to grab back."

"But to them I'm not. I'm an obligation and now a slave. I do what they tell me so they won't harm me. Sometimes I wonder if I would still help them out as much as I do if I didn't have to worry about a beating..." That kind of put things into perspective, didn't it? "But then I scold myself for thinking that way. I just...I don't understand the kind of love that you have. How can you give it away? How can you know that without a doubt your parents will always be there for you? How come your parents love you?"

"Malik, up to spying already? Why can't you give the boy some privacy despite his antics." Malik did worry, didn't he? "Why don't you just walk up to the boy and ask him rather than trying to play detective? Flightly as he may be, he's horribly honest as well. Besides...I'm sure he has some story to go with it that he's just dying to tell someone."
He was getting nowhere fast, wasn't he? A thousand times he could explain it to her and she would tell him that he was the wrong on and that he didn't know what he was talking about. "If you know they don't think you're worth something like that, then why do you even care about them at all?" Though his questions were more rhetorical at this point, seeing as he couldn't get anything but a slave like subordinate answer out of her. He was going to need another drink after this conversation.
"There's nothing to understand about it. It's an unconditional feeling...it doesn't matter what happens or doesn't happen, or if anyone is angry or happy or whatever. They just love you because they love you. They don't need a reason, they just want to give you that fuzzy feeling that makes you happy when they're around or when you can count on them." It was hard to explain honestly, especially for him. He felt like he was talking in circles anyway.

For once she didn't just spout off an answer like 'I have to' or 'they expect me to.' She really started to think about it. Why did she want so badly to feel something from her parents? She'd seen Malikhai and his family interact on multiple occasions and had also witnessed the Inthara family. Both seemed to have an invisible energy running through them. An energy not unlike what Malikhai was talking about. An energy her own family didn't have and probably never would. "I...don't know."
Her parents treatment of her was extremely conditional. When she performed to their specifications and they weren't angry or drunk, they left her alone. But the minute one of them became upset or something wasn't quite right, she bore the brunt of their disapproval. "You...love your parents even when you're mad at them? And they feel the same about you." She knew the second one was true. Malik had lectured his son about checking in and not disappearing but that energy had never weakened. In fact, it had almost seemed to strengthen.

"I spy because he's flightly. I can't get the boy to stand still for more then a meal's time. I simply can't keep track of him as much as I could Malikhai at his age. And I don't want to see him get hurt. that boy has borne the brunt of enough misery and anguish from a toddler's age."
A shrug.
"Oh I'm sure there is. But you know why I worry. there are things in the Vault that can be extremely dangerous if tampered with by someone not in control of themselves."

Despite the vaugness of the answer, he was quite pleased that it was indeed a positive to the question. She didn't know why she cared which meant that she wasn't caring for any important reason or feeling, or even really caring at all. "Yes. Most times I'm mad at them because the've told me no, or kept me from doing something, punished me for a reason that I well deserve. But they only do those things to begin with because they love me. And when I don't listen and do whatever I want and whether it turns out badly or for the better, they still love me then too."
"Flighty indeed. But he's a sweetheart who doesn't mean anything bad, or trying to cause trouble. He's just doing what makes him happy most of the time." Though it was true, Dhairiss had to deal with left overs from being little not that it slowed him down any most of the time. "Alright, I'll give you that one. Spying on him keeps him safe." Nodding lightly, "Then talk to him dear. Half the point of thieving is to do it for the thrill."

"Alright, I'll talk to him then."
taking her into the house and getting her a cinnamon stick
"and since your not flushed or giggly, all the cinnamon you can handle I guess."
A chuckle to her, before motioning to one of the servants to get his youngest son.

"Besides, he likes it when you give him attention. Whatever kind it may be." Dhairiss knew his flighty ways upset his father sometimes but that was how he was and the boy liked validation that it was okay for him to be that way. She had a talk with him about it once. Though she gave a happy noise and snatched the cinnamon stick from him, nibbling on it happily. "Don't tell me that or you'll likely to find me passed out in the bedroom from overload, covered in cinnamon."
Didn't take long before Dhairiss came downstairs...using the stair railing to slide down them rather than walk or hop or whatever kind of walking motion. Wandering over to his parents with his hands shoved in his pockets he cocked his head at them with a slightly aloof grin. "Yeah?"
