(( >________> Bad, Kiah! -slaps the back of your hand-

Ugh. It's such a long explanation. I'll just say it's gone downhill since he took over the business over a year ago now. My original boss, the original owner of the company, was great. I loved her. She gave me hours. But since my new boss bought the business, it's gone downhill. I hardly get any hours, and even though they claim to be giving me as much as they can, I feel that they're hogging all of the business. I know they own it, so they have every right to, but I mean...come on. Not only that, but my boss is very sloppy. He loves animals and that's great, but he's sloppy. He's always late, EVERYWHERE. He's just overall sloppy with the work, and I don't even know if he realizes it or if the clients realize it. He's a very nice person, and I love him and his wife as people. But as bosses, they just aren't cutting it.

So basically how it works, is that I get 65% of the fee they charge clients, whenever I'm the one who does the visit. If we're meeting a new client, or I'm training at a new client's house, then I get minimum wage.

Now..my boss only does petsitting. Petsitting means coming, taking care of the pet for 30-45 minutes, and then leaving. The business is insured, so if anything happens my boss and myself are covered. For me, I'm covered so long as it falls under the petsitting category.

On the side, completely separate from petsitting, I will housesit for people. I'm not personally insured, and anything I charge goes directly to me. I don't pay taxes on it and it doesn't fall under the petsitting company name or anything.

Originally, there was one client that I would housesit for from time to time. They're a regular client, and we walk and feed their dogs twice a week, every week, except when they go away on vacation. During that time, is when I housesit and the animals are solely my responsibility, no insurance, none of that. I get paid completely separate, it has nothing to do with my boss or petsitting.

Well, when some clients started to mention they were interested in someone housesitting, my boss told them that they don't do housesitting, but that I do. My boss told the client, not me. They told the client if I housesit, the insurance doesn't cover me and it's totally separate from their company, which is correct. That's all fine.

However, me being the good person that I am, I feel bad when people ask me to housesit, because that means it's business that my boss won't be getting. Which, I shouldn't even feel bad, because it was my boss who told them in the first place, so it's his own fault. But regardless, I still feel bad. So I tried to think of a way that my boss would still be getting something out of it, and so the client would be happy because I'd be staying there with the animals and spending the night and stuff.

So I thought, what if they pay for the normal amount of visits through my boss, and then they pay me separately, like $10 per night to sleep there. And the visits would go on MY schedule, because then I would get the 65% of the fee, which would allow me to get what I would normally get for housesitting, with the addition of the $10. And, my boss would still be getting something, because they would get the 35% of the fee for the visits, without even having to do any work.

My boss agreed to these terms. Now...it complicated things a little, because it would mean that for the hours that the client scheduled the visits, I would be covered by insurance. But for the other parts of the day and overnight, I would not. (The whole reason for that is because according to my boss, adding housesitting to the insurance would make the rates go up or whatever). But that was fine, everyone understood that. No problems.

And so I'm supposed to be housesitting for a client this week, and I was under the impression that our arrangements for the previous like 4 times still stood.

However, when I got my schedule for this week, I noticed that some of the visits weren't on my schedule. When I asked about it, my boss said that because he has a light week this week, he's taking some of the visits.

So even though I would be at the house already, he would come by to let the dogs out or feed them depending on what time of day it was. Does that make any sense whatsoever? No. And it would also mean that I wouldn't be getting paid the 65% of those visits. Which would mean I'm staying at the client's house for way less money, and therefore not really making much.

I was under the impression we had a deal. Apparently, my boss claims we did not have such a deal. When I brought it up and said how it didn't make sense to me, etc, my boss replied with something rather rude and a "you shouldn't assume this or that" kind of attitude, even though they agreed to the terms for like the 4 times previous.

And btw, all this was over only TWO visits. Like..for ONE week, the couldn't just let me have some visits? I've been getting like no hours for months now. They couldn't just let me have this.

So now, I'm going to have to tell the clients after this time, I'm not comfortable housesitting for them under these arrangements, and that I'll only housesit for them if it's completely separate from my boss. And I'll have to tell them it'll mean there won't be any kind of insurance, so it'll be up to them if they want to hire me to housesit, or my boss to petsit.

Another tidbit: I had to sign a no-compete clause before starting to work for the company, that says I can't pet-sit for anyone in specific areas during the time that I'm employed by the company, or for 3 years after I am fired or quit. Which means I can't just offer to petsit for people in the area, separate of my regular job. But it does mean that I can housesit, because housesitting is a service that the company does not offer.

So there's that.

On top of that, the weekly client that I walk and feed their dogs every Monday and Wednesday evening...has been getting overcharged. And they've been getting overcharged for months, and pretty much ever since my new boss took over the company.

This is directly from the company website:

"Regular Visit for Dogs and Cats (30-45 minutes)
$16 if your location is 8 miles or less from our office
$19 for locations 9 to 16 miles from our office
$22 for locations 17 to 21 miles from our office

Google Maps is used to determine mileage. To estimate your per visit price, you may use Google Maps to calculate from NE 111th Avenue, Earleton, FL 32631, to your address."

I looked at the invoice for the client one day. My boss has been charging them $19. Using Google Maps and putting in the addresses, the client only lives 5.6 miles from the office. So they should only be getting charged $16 for each visit, but are getting charged $19. And have been for months.

This is dishonest. And I know for a fact that my boss MUST know that they are overcharging the client. For the first maybe 4 months or so that the new boss took over, he kept the same rates for existing clients, clients that had been using the company for years. However, the rates should have changed, because the new office location is further away from most of the clients than the old location was. So he let it slide for a while, but eventually he increased the rates on the clients, to what it should be.

But he neglected to decrease the rates for clients that ended up now being closer to the new office location. And I know there is no possible way this can be an oversight or a simple mistake. They have been charging the client this rate for a year.

So now, I have to do the honest but really awkward thing, and bring this to the client's attention. And it sucks for me, because it means I'll be making less money from that client. But there is no way I can go on with a clear conscience, when I have this information and I'm aware that my boss is overcharging them.

I have to tell the client, and also say, "Please don't tell my boss that I told you this. Just tell them you were looking over your invoice and looked on the website and noticed." Because I'm afraid if my boss knows that I looked at the invoice and noticed, and told the client, that I'll get fired.

I mean, honestly at this point, I don't really care if I get fired. I don't like working for these people, and I'm stressed because of it. I'm not making much money anyway, and if I get fired for being a GOOD and HONEST person...then so ******** what? ))
