Marcus looked away, a wide grin on his face, but he was thinking about her words. She was probably bluffing, in any case. Or just trying to make him think. "You'll have to do better than that," he answered airily, shrugging. "Or at least have 'sordid details' to hide," he added.

Terryn grinned, locking eyes with him for a brief moment. "I do not believe that even having a hundred sordid details would ever allow me to come close to measuring up to you and your numerous scandals and affairs." She moved closer to him, giving him one of those fake innocent "You know I'm right" glances.

Marcus laughed. It wasn't, as his grandmother so fervently wished, at all embarrassing or scandalous to him. "Well, I'm just glad that you accept my obvious superiority in this particular field." He smirked at Terryn, thinking for a second on how completely different she was to any other girl he'd ever met, and tried (unsucessfully) to decide on whether it was a good or bad thing.

"I never said you were superior. A man may cast his line to fish every single day, but that does not make him the superior fisherman, especially if he fails to catch a single fish." She gave him that grin again, her eyes reflecting a sort of challenging spark.

Marcus frowned for a moment. "The same could be said of other men, but the many barrels of fish I seem to catch don't exactly disappoint me. And, really, what do you know? You're afraid to 'cast your line,' as you so eloquently worded it."

"But I'm sure if I did, my fish would not jump out of the bucket once they were reeled in." Terryn shrugged. "Besides which, I detest fish. They smell bad, are slippery, and have big mouths."

"But at least fish are good for something," said Marcus innocently, wondering if he had taken the innuendo a step too far. Terryn would probably scowl at him, but Marcus was never one to resist the temptation of poking fun.

Terryn rolled her eyes. "I have the right to slap you and call for my father right now, you know. But..." She tilted her head to the side and scrutinized him with her eyes. "Perhaps I shall deal with you in my own particular fashion."

Marcus tilted his head to the side as well. "Well, knowing you, it most certainly will be particular. What will you do? Hang me?"

Terryn only shrugged, looking at him smugly. "You shall know when it happens and only then. I can not give you any due warning, where is the fun in that?"

"The fun in being punished by a celibate wench? Why, I simply couldn't imagine," said Marcus, his voice curious, sarcastic, and containing a hint of something undefinable but certainly inappropriate.

"Good, then it shall be a complete shock." Terryn stood up from the couch, giving no indication to Marcus as to where she might be going, but walking away as though she meant for him to follow.

Marcus stood, smirking, and followed without a word.

"Well. I commend you and Serina. These are beautiful gardens," said the Duchess sincerely, after bending to smell a lily.

Terryn led Marcus through the main dining hall, waving her servants off to get into the kitchen. "You stay here." She left him in the dining hall and entered the kitchen, disappearing from sight.

The earl nodded. "Thank you very much. But I must admit, Serina is the gardener of the family. I have no green thumb, and Terryn prefers wild growing plants, not restricted bushes, as she so puts it."

"I've nowhere else to go," answered Marcus, slipping his hands into his pockets with a seemingly permanently affixed amused look on his face.

The Duchess nodded. It was quite chilly, and her cheeks were beginning to turn pink despite the white powder she applied liberally to them. "Perhaps we should return indoors. Check up on the two of them," she suggested, enveloping her left hand in her right to keep her hands warm.
