Hiacinth
Hello, y'all!

Thornwick

Steampunk pirates sounds awesome!

Sorry it took me a while to reply; had a busy weekend. xp

^^ Yeah, steampunk pirates--in the air or on the seas--are awesome.

I dunno I was also thinking of something involving the elements. At first, I thought elemental wizards, but that's been done (a lot). How about elemental, steapunk pirates?

It would be like that episode of Avatar where they find the guys on a mountain who have epic airships!

Or what if the pirates possessed the ability to wield/manipulate the elements? Or maybe their vessels?

It sounds like a nice change from humans wielding powers themselves. The pirates can still manipulate the specific element through their vessels, so airships would be like channels. Control over abilities depends on their compatibility/how well they work with each other.
Just throwing it out there. Did that even make sense? sweatdrop

HEY, that's a pretty sweet idea. If somebody wants to start working on a super-cool format for me to post all of the information in, I'll try to work on the idea today as much as I can. I really like the idea of the elements being tied to their ships somehow. That's a really cool, super exciting idea.

Personally not a huge huge fan of using any pictures at all for character purposes, but I'll leave that up to everyone else to decide, I know there are some conflicting interests there.

Other than that, here is the last skeleton that I stole from someone. I've tweaked it a little bit, but if there's anything that you want to add, feel free to do so. There isn't a definite plot or anything yet, so you can keep everything as simple as you want. The more info I get from everyone, the more I can develop things.

Specialty: Your area of study or field of expertise. Not particularly relevant, but a good character-builder.
Crew Position: Who died and made you captain? Please bear in mind that there are also more thankless crewmembers, like navigators or sentries. This position doesn't necessarily have to line up with your previously noted specialty. It should also be noted that you don't necessarily have to be part of any crew, you could be a prisoner or a stowaway or just a passenger.
History: Nothing overly tragic, preferably. I mean, I guess you're a pirate, so a certain level of unfortunate happenstance is going to come up, but keep it under control.
Persona: Your personality. Get creative. "Piratey" is not a real adjective.
Abilities: PURELY BRAINSTORMING! Come up with a really cool idea for an ability that will apply directly to you, and also and ability of some sort that somehow ties into your vessel and its relationship to you. If you're going to be on the same ship as someone else (please god don't everyone be on different ships), this is going to take some collaboration.
Strengths: Things that you're good at in a non-magical sense.
Weaknesses: Things that you could stand to work on. I reserve the right to add "crippling mental and emotional trauma" or "exploding fists."
Shoe Size: yeah, just do it okay
Other: Anything you feel that got left out.
MUSIC: Makes for good listening while reading. Set a tone for me.
Username: Because how will I know who you are to judge you properly

That said, here are some additional rules that I used for my last roleplay that I think could add an interesting twist to things. Give me a yea or a nay on it, it was pretty fun to play with at the time, but it's up to the general consensus.

Additonal, roleplay-specific character rules:
I, as the creator of the thread, will guide and foster your magic, giving you a guideline with which to work as I see fit. As your personality and character arc develops, I will choose a magical ability for you that either fits with your character or is hilarious, depending on how well you are performing and how much I like your character. I will not give you an ability that I do not think you can handle.

For example, if your posts consist of:

“*I punch everything*”

I may briefly consider giving you a magic that enhances your strength before deciding that your current level of ability does not communicate to me that you can handle the responsibility of being able to punch walls but refrain from punching walls. So maybe I’ll give you the ability of having bones made of glass.

If all of your posts are very well thought out, and you continuously develop your character into something of a recognizable person without jumping around too much, I will attempt to match you with a skill to complement your traits. If you have a very angry character, he’ll set things on a fire, a serene one, maybe he’ll soothe emotions, a scholar, maybe you’ll be clairvoyant. You’ll just have to do your damndest to show me (without telling me) what sort of power you should have. Most of these I will run by you in advance. But maybe not. (But probably).

You will begin with small manifestations of magic that I will describe within the roleplay as they occur, and gradually work your way up until your combined force is damn near leveling the city. I say 'damn near' because clearly by now you've figured out the best way to gain magic is to show me that you won't necessarily use it. (Restraint is a talent and it will be rewarded.)

-------

You could do it all by magic. You could wave a wand and get twinkly stars and a fresh-baked loaf. You could make fish jump out of the sea ready cooked. And then, somewhere, somehow, magic would present its bill, which was always more than you could afford. That's why it was left to wizards, who knew how to handle it safely. Not doing any magic at all was the chief task of wizards — not "not doing magic" because they couldn't, but not doing magic when they could do and didn't.

-Terry Pratchett

You gotcha. I'm excited to see what you create!

Also:
RE: post order, content, length, and etc., my schedule isn't particularly conducive to making lots of smaller posts throughout the day, but other people might not be down to write long long posts. We need a way to make things work without some people running off into the sunset and leaving other people behind.

I say we pick a length and stick by it . There is not going to be a
way to please everyone , unfortunately . Long-form literate roleplayers
don't really like playing with short-posters , and vice versa .

Also , what are we calling this rp ?

I'm sure I'll come up with something, which is why everyone should start shouting suggestions rapidly.
