"Is she now? Maybe I'll have to set aside some time to come see that race. Would be nice to at least sigh nostalgically at such things." Giving a nod to Zykariel, "Good you recognize that Zykariel but young ambitious elves often forget such things in the heat of the moment with victory on the horizon." Shaking his head, "I did just that and took a fall. You remember don't you Zahara? On that last jump. Jin caught a little in the back on it and he jostled and I wasn't holding on tight as I should be. Enough for me or him." Turning his eyes back to Zykariel. "Smacked right into the ground with my horse on me in following. We would of been okay if I had held tight to the reins and let him know not to be spooked for a little hoof tap."

"Mommy does make the best cookies." Still listening in on what was being said in the kitchen...he was entirely settled with this all. Didn't know this guy but apparently his wife and son did and they were close enough to know his cooking and for his son to be settled around him. Looking down to Kelligrin as the boy was happy at he extra treat and was curious to the desk top as well. "Not a story, daddy is playing with his squiggles again, see?" Taking hold of a paper and handing it to the child, some random rune combination he was working on.

Taking another bite of her own cookie, she nodded. "I do. We found out later that he'd picked up a rock which added to his discomfort and irritation. You would have won it by three lengths, too. It was a sad day."

Zykariel was stunned, sitting back in his chair and watching Nadai. "You were ahead by three lengths?" He'd never been that far ahead in his life. Most of his races were extremely close, nearly neck and neck for a few of them. And then he'd fallen. It was a good lesson to keep in mind because he remembered a few times where he'd gotten lax and figured he had it won. "Did you get hurt really badly or just decided not to go back?"

"Yup." He glanced down at the funny lines Daddy was always making and picked up a piece of the charcoal. "Kelli help?" He knew better than to draw before he had permission.

"Sad is a bit of an understatement Zara and you know it." Munching his own cookie as he turned his attention back to what seemed to be an awe struck teen. "Yeah, Jin and I worked wonderfully together. Most racers these days don't know how to position on their horses right to get the most speed out of them. Tricks of the trade are something I know well you could say." Shaking his head then almost sadly with a sigh, "You can't fall in the middle of a race track where people are hell bent to catch up with you, and manage to get up on your own. Not to mention all the kicking Jin did when he went down, so yes I got hurt pretty badly and decided that it was best for both Jin and I to put away our racing days. He had gotten hurt too from it all and I didn't want to put him through that again. He still doesn't like jumps." Pointing at Zahara, "Also the reason he's hurt at the moment." Giving then a nostalgic look then to them both, "But despite that all, he still loves to run as fast as he can. Sometimes I think he's testing if I can still ride him as I used to."

"Sure Kel, you can help." Grabbing the boy a clean rectangle of paper and handing it over to him, taking his charcoal and sharpening it to a nice point before handing it back. Oh lord, they were talking about racing and the boy was starting to sound impressed...lessons could only come out of this he was sure. Did not make him happy and yet he had promised to lay off his son about the racing.

"That's true. It was devastating. We all thought both of you were goners with the speed, how far you were thrown and the damage you both sustained. They didn't even stop the race." Standing, she put the water on to boil for tea and stirred the casserole she was making then settled back down. "It's quite dangerous out there, Kariel. Remember when you were knocked off and nearly ended up trampled?"

"That was different because it wasn't an armed race. He used a weapon that he wasn't allowed to and they called foul. Luckily I was able to roll out of the way. It still cost me the race but the officials felt differently about things." Shaking his head and still rather enraptured with the whole story. "I'm sorry."

"It was definitely nasty. But Jin made it through like the pro he is and he's still a very playful and competitive horse." Returning Nadai's smile. "I'll bet you're right. He still likes to stretch and strut and doesn't want you to ever lose faith in him, despite his uncertainty at times. A lot of riders would have just had him put down though it was amazing he didn't break his leg. Nadai earned my respect and affection when he refused to do so before even knowing the fate of his horse." Reaching over and resting her hand on his. "That horse is like his best friend."

"Kay." He took the clean piece and began to doodle on it, making his own scribbles the best way he knew how. "Kelli do good?" Scratching squiggles in no real pattern or idea. "Daddy squiggles go boom!"

"Like my best friend? He is my best friend. He still spooks at jumps now, which is how this time it happened as well because he hesitated when he needed to move. But he's resting now." Grinning at her and the comfort she was giving before he let his eyes back to her son. "No need to be sorry lad. You just remember that you always have to have that head in the game. When I come and see you race, I want to know that there are still worthy racers out there to behold."

"Yes you're doing very good." He was very aware of what was happening in the kitchen and he wasn't sure how to feel about it. After all, there were so many possibilities and what with them having recently been on the down and out with one another...well his mind ventured places he'd rather it not. "Mine do that sometimes. But the fun ones don't go boom." A quick move of fingers to amuse the child as a little energy butterfly poofed into existance.

"And you allow him around jumps still which is important for his belief in his ability, Nadai. I always tell Zykariel that those who think of their horses as just pets are missing out on one of the best relationships ever. Horses are just like us; they think, feel, and desire certain things."

'You're coming to see me race? For sure?" He tried not to sound that excited about it. Teenagers didn't show such emotion and excitement about things. But he was feeling a bit like a kid in a candy store. "Can I see you and Jin run?"

"Fun ones." Reaching up, he began trying to catch the butterfly in his hands, giggling when it landed on his hand and then jumped to his nose. "Lookit!"

"Well Jin is happy staying away from jumps when he can. He'll still take little ones, but nothing big as race gates and the like. I probably should change out his shoes while he's resting up right now too." Nodding to Zahara's words but he saw that excitment in the boy's eyes despite his lack of showing it otherwise. "For sure I will. It'll be nice to see things again and well, I want to see what all these girls are going on about." Chuckling to that before sobering some, "I suppose it wouldn't hurt to let you see and Jin does love to show off. Once he's all healed up I'd be happy to show you." Turning a look to Zahara. "Would you perfer Zykariel coem to Vesendar or I come here for such things?"

"I see Kelligrin." Letting the butterfly flutter as it may until it was out of energy and he gave his son then something akin to fireflies to chase around the room as he continued to monitor things.

Still trying not to show how excited he was, he snatched another cookie and leaned back in his chair. "I'm not promising anything but I'll do my best. I'd like to win all four and be the final champion."

He'd quite caught onto the whole thing now hadn't he? "I think I'd prefer the two of you sticking close to the house. I know things have settled in Vesendar but I'd still feel better with you here." Standing up, she took the plate of cookies with her and pulled out the casserole. "Lunch is ready. Zykariel, set the table." While he took care of that, she walked to Sevilin's training room and walked in. "Are you two hungry?"

Climbing down off his father's lap, he started toddling after the little spurts of energy that were fluttering around the room. "Hungry!"

"Which is an ambition that you should continue to go after. After all, no one became great without risking things...maybe you have what it takes indeed to be champion. Show others how things are done. You're training appropriately, right?" Nodding to Zahara when it came to location, that would be doable. Quieting himself as the boy set the table and he waited patiently as Zahara moved off to do something or other.

He was having his fun entertaining his baby as he was just having a good time chasing after little energy particles. Red eyes came up to watch his wife, tilting his head at her if he seemed to be trying to figure something out. "He is apparently. But I'll pass, I'm fine." Better for him to stay put least he do something he probably shouldn't.

He did as he was told setting plates, napkins and other paraphernalia down in front of the required spots as well as getting his brother's highchair and moving it closer. "The way my mom taught me. I put her through her paces and Malikhai rides with me once a week when we do the hills and whatnot. Have to keep her in shape and whatnot."

Watching the little boy for a moment, she laughed and then held out her hand. "Come on, Kelligrin. Lunchtime." He toddled over and took her hand but she scooped him into her arms instead. "I'll bring you a plate, Raven. Don't work too hard, okay?" Leaning down and brushing a quick kiss over his lips before heading back out. It took her a few minutes to set the casserole in the middle of the table and pour glasses of milk for all while getting Kelligrin settled into his chair and handing him a plate that he could pick at with his fingers or a fork as he desired. "Did you decide when you wanted to do the training?"

"Well, I could teach you a thing or two if you'd like to see if what I do is different. Don't want to impose or anything, but just in the mood to offer tips if need be. There's a few specifics that can be done with training courses that help with race endurance and the like." His attention came back up to Zahara though and he gave his thank yous to Zahara as she set up and passed out food accordingly.

"Mom wouldn't mind," he said exuberantly, sensing the other elf's hesitation to stepping on what he figured was his mother's territory. "She's not a real racer anyway but she didn't want me overexerting Destyny." And neither did Malikhai but he'd be thrilled to know that a previous racer was instructing him. "I'm always willing to learn." Glancing up at his mother, he shrugged. "No, we haven't made any definite plans yet. I don't have to go to any classes I don't want to so school won't be a problem."

"Says who?"

"My dad."

Her lips pursed. "He and I will discuss it."

"Mo-om."

"That's final, Zykariel."

"Final Kariel!"

"Shut up, Kelligrin!"

The baby looked at him and promptly began to cry.

"Zykariel!" Reaching over and pulling the little one out of his high chair and comforting him before choosing just to feed him on her lap.

"Well, he shouldn't tell me what to do!" He protested defensively.

"He's a baby, Zykariel. You know better." Shaking her head as the toddler quieted down to sniffles. "I'm sorry, Nadai. Usually my children are better behaved." Glaring at her teenage son who simply rolled his eyes and turned his attention to his food.

"MOst racers make the mistake of thinking that speed is everything. I never won my races of speed alone. You have to know how to manage endurance and keep them from getting tired too much. Just because it's called racing doesn't mean that speed is all that should be focused on. Especially with all the variations of mounted combat and such that are being thrown into them." Blinking though as apparently there was a bit of a family spat going on and duly apologized for which he promptly waved off. "Oh no it's okay. Kids will be kids. Heck, I'm still not behaved sometimes."
PostPosted: Sun Jul 13, 2008 8:51 pm

"You can't. Horses get tired too and some don't understand that they have to have their bursts at the end. I'm not usually in first until it gets closer to the end of the race because when I give Destyny her head, she takes it and runs with it." Ignoring his mother for the most part because he was pissed off at her and his brother.

Zahara chose to stay mostly involved with giving her youngest bites of her plate and merely listening to the conversation between the racers. She wasn't pleased with Zykariel's behavior by any means and Nadai's attempts to wave it off weren't helping the teenager any either. It was only fair that Sevilin have some say in Zykariel's training whether or not he'd given the boy freedom to choose his own schooling schedule. She still wasn't sure that was the best idea.

"But if you let her have her head too much then she's going to faulter. She knows you're on her back but are you truly with her or just along for the ride to victory is the real question going through her head." Munching lightly at his meal with that delighted smile. How he did love her cooking. Zahara he was beginning to think oddly quiet though and that itself was making him uncomfortable. Finishing off a bit he turned his attention to her briefly. "So how long should I keep putting the stuff you gave me on Jin now?"
