In Pasadena ( I think that's how it's spelled >.>; ) California, on January 1st each year, there's a big football game called the Rose Bowl. My high school's playing during the halftime show, and it's this really big honor. We also get to participate in the Tournament of Roses Parade. x333 It's awesome.

but I need fees to get to Los Angeles, have my outfit done, etc. T____T

Ogenki desu ka? - Means basically how are you doing? Are you Well?, etc.

So Hai. Genki desu- means Yes I am. I am fine, I am well, etc.

Iie. Genki desu - means no i'm not, i am not well etc.

ee. Genki desu - Same as Hai. Genki desu.

Edit: @Kaitae. OOO I see! I see!!

I've heard of that football game! on tv, several years ago... when me and my sister were staying at my grandparents for whatever reason..

We watched the parade on tv too.. well briefly..

but now i know what your talking about..

*takes notes*

Yaaay!

The small conversation I threw together with a friend of mine basically runs

'Ogenki desu ka?

Genki desu, arigato. Anata wa?'

And then basically the only thing I can say back is 'sugoi' cause that was all I remember. So I'm excellent whether I am or not. XDD
PostPosted: Sat Mar 10, 2007 2:48 pm

...."sugoi" means "awesome"?

.. the arigatou would go before the genki desu.. (according to my dictionary.. they have the response as . Arigatou. Genki desu. )

and then the wa in the "anata wa" i think it wouldn't be there. Anata alone is you. instead of wa put ka, because ka is the particle word that turns sentences into questions

so "Anata ka?" would be "You? "
Anata wa would be like starting a sentences talking about whoever is there.. also anata is a disrespectful word to use when talking about someone who deserves more respect because of age, social status etc. so rather than saying Anata, say their name.

then as a response to the "Anata ka?"

to make the "sugoi" thing a complete sentence you could say

Hai, watashi wa sugoi desu. ( Yes, I am excellent/great*insert other translations for Sugoi*. )

Kaha-Michi, I think anata wa means 'you are' or something along those lines... if used with a name, it means that person is blank-blank-blank and so on...

I dunno, I only had a small conversation about that particular phrase before with a friend. xD; So.. I don't know. And wait... if that means disrespectful .....

I'm not sure what "anata wa" would mean. We've never used the word "anata" to begin with in my Japanese 100 class.

Any time we talk about someone we use their name.

It doesn't mean disrespectful.
but in Japanese culture the use of the word "anata" when reffering to a person is seen as disrespectful..
If it was used with someone your own age, or same level in social standings it's fine but if you were talking to a teacher, your parents etc. very very disrespectful.
